Guest guest Report post Posted November 21, 2009 Dear Kristine, I have a friend that is already on meds, but not insulin yet. Her diabetes has caused other bodily problems. I bought her a copy of Dr. Neal Barnard's book, "Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs." It promotes a vegan diet and "by closely following his program you can cut back on diabetes medications, if not eliminate them completely; reduce your risk of diabetes complications; realize bonus health benefits as you take off unwanted pounds, lower your cholesterol and blood pressure and boost your energy; enjoy delicious foods in generous portions." It is available in both hardback & paperback editions at most book stores and we have a copy from our local library (also can be obtained by libraries through interlibrary loan system). All my/our best wishes for your optimum health ... I just joined and want to introduce myself. I am just learning to be vegan as I have been diagnosed with diabetes and am hoping to defeat it so I won't have to go on insulin and perhaps no medicine at all. I am middle aged and married to a wonder man for 38 years now this past September < labor day weekend> I have 6 grand children, all girls with only 1 boy! I am wondering if you can help me with the vegan diet here???? Thanks so much! Kristine
Guest guest Report post Posted November 21, 2009 Hi, Kristine, I, too, am new to eating vegan and for the same reasons. I was diagnosed with diabetes in Feb. of '01. I am on multiple meds but not insulin. Lately I have seen my blood sugars and cholesterol going up in spite of all the meds. Tom recommended Dr. Neal Barnard's book. Please, please find a copy!! That is why I am here! After reading it, I couldn't come up with any reason not to begin eating a low fat vegan diet. I have been eating this way for two and a half weeks and have seen a substantial reduction in my blood sugars! My fasting numbers dropped nearly 30 points after about 10 days! Now, I have to watch out for hypoglycemia after meals! I see my endocrinologist next month and can't wait to hear what he has to say! While your goal is to stay off of meds, mine is to get rid of them. I know we can both be successful!
