Guest guest
I know I can't get it any more...I believe it is something about it being invasive....that said. Dodder seed does grow here in the South east (at least). Any botanists (i'm just an herbalist) know if it is similar botanically or in medicinal property? Guess I will add it to things to check into. Guest guest
Tu Si Zi is sold in a ³cube² (.5²x.5²x.5²) by Crane Herb from Spring Wind Herbs with no detected pesticides, insecticides, fungicides. $11.99 for 1 pound bag. Spring Wind Herbs label : ³Tu Si Zi Bing (cuscuta seed cakes) are made by mixing Tu Si Zi with water and flour and baking the result. Then the cakes are cut into pretty little cubes. Why do we hae them? Because Cuscuta is considered an invasive plant, the USDA does not allow import of the viable seed. For some time importers were allowed to import the seeds if they were cooked under enough heat to make them non-viable. Lately (in late 2008), the USDA became stricter and would not allow any loose Tu Si Zi into the country. At this point, only the cooked cake is allowed entry. The function of the caked item is the same as the Tu Si Zi you are familiar with, but because this form contains wheat flour, it is not appropriate for patients who are allergic to wheat.² Bill Egloff Crane Herb Co. Health without Drugs or Surgery 105 Tivoli Gardens Peachtree City, GA 30269 770.780.9608 info www.davidtoone.com Kath, I am curious how many people have had visits by the USDA. I posted that I had a similar experience a month or so ago, but I did not give them access to my herb room. My understanding is that the unprocessed Tu Su Zi is a problem -- even the dry fried (chao) form that I bought from Nuherbs -- because it is considered an invasive species. Guest guest
Got it. The officers who showed up at my clinic were not fake, they left their card and their car had government plates on it. The following day we called the number on the card, dialed 0 for the operator which got us to the front desk which they answered and asked for the officers by name. They were out of this office: http://tinyurl.com/y927x87 When I talked to the folks at Springwind and Asia Naturals, they both confirmed the the USDA is looking into this. The USDA is definitely has enforcement jurisdiction: http://tinyurl.com/yjf3my5 In this case, I was just about the closest acupuncture office to their office. I wonder if the other acupuncturist was also very close to a UDSA field office. David Toone, L.Ac. Guest guest
Powders made in Taiwan, would not be a problem, since the seeds are not viable -- it is only the whole raw unaltered seeds that could be planted in the US and therefore introduce a new invasive species. The problem has nothing to do with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but rather with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). David David Toone, L.Ac. Guest guest
I have a small one person office. Their office is pretty close and the closest practice south of Atlanta. I do mention on my site that I keep a raw herb pharmacy, so I think it was a combination of all those factors and the fact that these guys had nothing to do the day before Halloween (the day they showed up).
