I did speak to Sharon, and she kindly invited me to get back in touch when I know more. The placenta is not actually previus, ie it is not obstructing the canal, but is simply lying very close to it. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I've not seen the patient. She has turned out to be extremely non-compliant with her midwife, who has now had to admit her to hospital to try to stabilize her uncontrolled bleeding. She appears to be more interested in shopping than protecting her pregnancy, so they will probably keep her in just to control her behavior. She professes to want the herbs, but I'm not sure I want to treat someone as difficult to deal with as she seems to be. We'll see. As to the self correction, the placenta can migrate upward as the uterine wall expands, but this does not seem to be helping in her case, and the bleeding is probably coming from somewhere else. Guest guest
Would appreciate any knowledge about preventing placenta previa. My 36 year old patient, 19 weeks pregnant, has part of her placenta obstructing the uterus. Although this may resolve itself in time, I would appreciate any advice from practitioners who have worked with this condition. She will not take herbs, so only acupuncture advice would be applicable here. Thank you!
Guest guest
Upper points, especially scalp points like Du 20 (bai hui), help to uplift falling (sinking/prolapsed) qi. Also consider GB 21 & K 27 as well as auricular uterus points. - Matt Bauer - equiknox Chinese Medicine Thursday, January 06, 2005 1:39 PM Re: placenta previa Would appreciate any knowledge about preventing placenta previa. Guest guest
Hi, There is nothing you can do in relation to placenta previa. The placenta is adhered to the wall of the uterus and, unfortunately,is sitting in the lower part of the uterus either over,or partly over the cervix. If only over the lip of the cervix,it may move out of the way as the uterus enlarges and the walls are stretched. I trained as a midwife prior to becoming an acupuncturist and have seen this problem. If the placenta is directly over the cervix, the baby will have to be delivered by Caesarian section.
