Guest guest
Hello all, My sister gave birth to twin girls in March and has enough milk for most of their needs except for one meal. She is supplementing with an organic Irish baby formula (not sure what it is - she lives in Greece and has access to all sorts of great stuff). I know of the fennel and fenugreek tea but was hoping people could make other recommendations I can pass along to her. Other herbs, teas, foods, massage... any suggestions are welcome! Guest guest
It seems that if she is only short one feeding, that she would also be able to make that much more for that feeding just by nursing the twins often and long. (she needs lots of help around the house as this takes up all her time) She might want to try domperidone to boost her supply, And make sure she doesn't give the babies so much of that formula in that one feeding that they are too full to wake up and empty the breasts out well, beginning a downward spiral of more formula and less milk production. And make sure the formula has the right ingredients in it. see mercolas recommendations. Guest guest
Hi Lexie - You sis may be experiencing this shortage during the 2-4 days growth spurts and not knowing it can be from that, with extra need for nursing. See your chapter on Baby's Best Nourishment in the notes your received in class, Unit 1. Also attending for her own rest and self massage as well as appropriate dietary and herbal supports especially strong during those times. She can find the self massage instructions (daily! before her long hot tub soak!) and the list of cooking tips mostly around which foods to favor and avoid in general after birth, at http://sacredwindow.com/articles. Our best herbal support for lactation from Ayurveda (and in general) is Shatavari, combined with other herbs suitable to her nature and vikruti. Can she access any Ayurvedic herbs? Otherwise let's talk about goat's rue (not the same herb as gokeshura though often confuses, I think it is more available in Europe) in her formula. YEs, strong fenugreek tea (1 tsp per cup, 2-3x per day, or mixed with fennel in that strength, should be helpful though not as hormonally integrative as the shatavari for the process.) Please call if you want help sorting that out, I'm here in Albuquerque at Emilah's, or better on my cell at 360.783.2838. Ayurvedic (gently administered with lots of warmth and repetition) oil massage is very valuable for increasing milk supply - as we integrate and rest more deeply into ourselves, everything functions better. Add a couple hot water bottles to the rest afterwards - tummy and lower back are usually the preferred location but she may like it on her breasts, neck, whatever! Warmth also helps a lot! simple medicines! And of course a woman is designed to produce as much as is needed for her babies. What is her routine like? That is an important discussion. Vicky's comment about taking care with the supplementation is very valuable to understand for a mother wanting to breastfeed her babies - supplementation and complementary feedings were researched over a decade ago proven to lead to early weaning. Intend it as stop gap measure only while she r quickly *0) You are teaching that Jyotish seminar next weekend? I was thinking to offer a trade with the mother's massage, eoils, whatever fits towards it if I'm not mid move. Just put a deposit on a nice space, the complex where Uma and Marek lived last year, trailside. See you Friday night anyway. Congratulations, Auntie! When do you get to go see them? Warm Regards; Ysha > My sister gave birth to twin girls in March and has enough milk for most of their needs except for one meal.
