One plane crashes, all aboard  (200 plus) persons die,a month later another plane

crashes all aboard (150 plus) die.

One guest speaker at the Conference on Karma & Re-Incarnation noted that " is

there such a concept as Group Karma " .Or is it a mere accident, human error, human

shortfall ??

Any thoughts ?

My understanding is:

Karma only brought people together the first place. Some people survive in

accidents, while some others suffer even in the best of situations.

How karma account is balanced, transacted and maintained is not easy for

devAs to know. It is part of IsvarA's mAyA. Only Isvara knows this. That is

the reason, sometimes there are clashes between Siva dhUtAs and yama dhUtAs,

because they just do their jobs without having the right of maintaining the

account. When the transaction gets updated, the trigger works for them to

bring the jIvAs to the appropriate place.

IsvarA is karma-phala-DhAtA. He gives the results for actions.

DevAs are also part of IsvarA's mAyA.

Blessed are the jIvAs who follow a sadguru, as sadguru removes the mAya for

His/Her devotees.

Jaya Guru Datta.

Friends,

I don't know if I can commnet without understanding the meaning of the

word " karma " . I am trying to understand it from long time.

Does it mean " what I/we have done in the past " ? or " what I/we are doing

now " ? or " what I/we will do in future " ? or " what is responsbile for *all*

the happenings for me/us " ?

I am at a confused state. My understanding is 'what had/will/is

happened/happen/happening to me is my karma'. That said, does it mean 'if

I curse somebody, will I get the same curse? no more no less'?

Any detailed explanations on " karma " are most welcome.

Thanks,

Phani

Jai Guru Datta Phani -

With humble pranams to the Lotus Feet of our beloved Appaji, here's my

humble attempt -

*What is the meaning of Karma & *

*What constitutes Karma - actions of this life or actions performed in the

past lives?*

*What are the three types of Karmas - Sanchita Karma, Praarabdha Karma and

Aagami Karma? *

There are three faculties (Trikaranas) through which we generally try to

express ourselves in this world - Thought, Word and Deed through our Manasa

[mind], Vak or Vacha [speech] & Kaya [body] respectively. Every one of these

actions that we express through our Mind and Body (Trikaranas) is a karma -

whether it is done in this life or in the past lives. Every word or

deed/action is a result of a strong thought - whose time has matured to

translate into speech/action.

Some actions yield fruits instantaneously. Example: Eating removes hunger,

Drinking water removes thirst.

Some actions take some time to give fruit. A mango seed planted today will

not grow immediately and bear fruits. It will take several years.

.... and there are some karmas which yield the fruit in subsequent lives.

But one thing is certain. Irrespective of when the karma is performed, one

has to enjoy its fruit - both good (punya) & bad (papa).

If the action performed in a particular life does not bear fruits in the

same life, what will happen to it? Where will it go?

It will accumulate. This accumulated lump of karma is called as 'sanchita

karma'(sanchaya = deposit).

Because the human birth comes after several previous births, there will be a

sizeable accumulation of sanchita karma. It is not possible to enjoy (or

suffer as the case may be) the entire sanchita karma in one life. Therefore,

the Almighty sets apart a portion of the sanchita karma for a particular

birth. A being comes to the world along with this part. Along with this, the

being will also have some independence (FREE WILL) to perform new karmas.

That part which comes along with birth is called as 'Praarabdha Karma'

(DESTINY).

Unexpectedly winning a lottery, meeting with an accident are some of the

examples of Praarabdha Karma.

After taking out the Praarabdha part from the Sanchita Karma, and adding the

new karmas that we continue to accumulate in this lifetime - what remains is

called as Aagaami Karma. This part of the karma is responsible for causing

future births.

With Sadguru's grace and participating in all activities that our

compassionate Swamiji initiates us into like Nama Sankeerthana, Charitable

activities, Studying the Divine Scriptures, Meditation, Kriya Yoga, Raja

yoga, Pujas, Homas, Mantra Japas (to name a few), we can reduce and

eliminate all Agami/Sanchita Karmas. This is the ONLY way to get out of the

cycles of birth/death.

Based on this description, it is generally thought that Praarabdha is

inevitable and should be experienced (enjoyed or suffered). It has been

likened to an arrow which, once shot from a bow can not be taken back. The

intention of this example is to show how strong the Praarabdha Karma is. It

does not mean that there is no remedy at all. An eminent warrior can

neutralise the arrow with another arrow and can escape from being its

target. Similarly, with the help of discrimination, steadfastness and by

judiciously observing certain rituals of atonement, one can overcome the

effects of Praarabdha Karma.

Sadgurus often show the path to their disciples to overcome the effects of

Praarabdha Karma.

We have all been extremely fortunate to have been initiated into Swamiji's

fold for several lives before this lifetime - whether we *know* it or not.

Despite that, we continue to indulge ourselves in may materialistic

activities (Tamasic and Rajasic) rather than spiritual activities (Satvic).

It is ONLY because of His compassion that he continues to track us down -

life after life - and guide/protect us and our families *silently*. His ways

(leelas) are myriad - but the purpose will be served!

This is why Swamiji taught us to sing this prayer (from the Vedic times) at

the end of all our Prayers/Pujas -

*Kayena vacha manasendriyair va, buddhyatmana va, prakriteh svabhavat

Karomi yadyat, sakalam parasmai, narayanayeti samarpayami*

*Meaning:*

I dedicate to the Supreme LORD Narayana all that I do by means of the *body,

words, mind*, the organs of action, the organs of knowledge and by the

impulsion of nature.

*There is a general question of How can we stop attracting new karmas

(knowing we have a huge load of Sanchita Karmas to experience. This has

been best explained in the Bhagavad Gita by the Lord Himself!*

The secret of getting out of this cycle of life and death is to perform

Karmas with detachment, meaning without expectations of the results/fruits

as it is said by Bhagawan Sri Krishna himself in the Gita:

करà¥à¤®à¤£à¥à¤¯à¥‡ वाधिकारसà¥à¤¤à¥‡ म फलेषà¥

कदाचना

करà¥à¤®à¤«à¤²à¥‡à¤¹à¥à¤¤à¥à¤° भà¥à¤°à¤®à¤¾ ते

संगोसà¥à¤¤à¥à¤µà¤•रà¥à¤®à¤¾à¤¨à¥€à¥¥

च २, ४७

In English transliteration:

*karmanye vadhikaras te

ma phalesu kadacana

ma karma-phala-hetur bhur

ma te sangostvakarmani*

" You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled

to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of

your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty. "

Ch. 2, 47

How lucky are we - to be under the Divine guidance and protection of our

beloved Appaji!!!

Despite all our wavering minds and intentions, It is ONLY due to His

kindness and compassion that we are given many opportunities of service. Any

kind of service done to Appaji is not for Him. It is for us to remove our

Sanchita Karmas (which have been accumulating like thick webs) over several

lifetimes. Only HE can disentangle us from all these impgregnable *webs* of

MAYA.
