A possible meaning for this mundige.

This

is a mundige by Sri Purandara Dasaru. He says,â€One should invite one’s own mind

to be one’s partner in sadhana. “ The biggest asset for sadhana is a satvic

mind and that is what Dasaru says we should beg for from the Lord. Dasaru

insists that we should repeatedly beg and ask for it again and again . To emphasize

his point he uses the word ‘kADuvaâ€. We have to pester the Lord to grant us a

good mind which is a fertile ground for sadhana.

mana Eva kAraNam baMda mOkshayOH is a saying from the shastras which insists that “Be it freedom or

bondage, both are caused by the mind only.†It serves to prove the importance

of the attitude of the mind. The attachments and associations of the mind play

an important role in securing freedom or confirming bondage.

The

thing that we need for obtaining jNANa is :

A

mind which likes to associate with the guNas of God.

Dasaru

describes this as ‘ kapishayanaMgala bEDuvA’

kam

pibati iti kapi- which drinks bliss , a jiva which is in bliss.

shayana-

bed ,a place to rest, shayaMgalu- places of rest

A

bed is a place of rest for the body. What is a place of rest for the mind?

The

mind is at rest or in peace only when it is In contemplation of God. How so?

Dasaru

in one devaranama says

anugAla chiMte jIvakke tanna manavu sriraMganOl mechchuva tanaka

The

mind of the jiva is in a turmoil always when it is in contact with the

samsaara. When its attitude towards contemplation of God becomes positive, then

it becomes free of chinte, worry.

What

do we mean by attitude becoming positive?

When

one forces onself to do the japa, to engage in singing His glory and does it as

a part of a routine of one’s life then it is not spontaneous. When the mind

itself draws one towards the activities to please God, then one can say that

the attitude has become positive. The

mind should feel that it is the only worthwhile thing and be drawn towards it

always. mechchuva means being pleased to think of God.

jNAnamaMTapadalli jOdi kUDADuva

“Let

us become a couple and dance in the jNAna maMTApaâ€

The

maMTApa is the place where the Lord is placed for puja. In the body the bimba

murthi is the Lord and He sits in the heart lotus which is the manaTapa. The

perception of the Lord is not available to all. It is only when the manTapa

becomes jNANa manTapa such a vision happens. Only when the knowledge of the

Lord is obtained by His grace, then the

ignorance surrounding the soul is removed, only then this perception happens.

We

hear of the great saints who have sung about this great event .

beda-

means to break open

The

soul is encased in the house of trigunas and it has to be free of this

trigunAtmaka prapancha.

The

Lord says in the Bhagavad Gita 2.45

traiguNya

nityasatvasthO niryOgakshema AtmavAn ||

“The

Vedas apparently appear to propagate the attainment of heaven and other

celestial delights born of the three gunas-satwa,rajas and tamsas ,the

secondary gains as the sole benefits of the enjoined deeds. Accept it not as

the prime purport of the Vedas. O Arjuna, the vedas really remove the poison

brought into being by the Trigunas- this craze for sense pleasures and worldly

acheivements. They actually extol the Supreme Brahman who confers eternal

bliss. Let they mind be deflected from the prohibited delights and be placed in

the Paramatman teeming with auspicious attributes. Be not geared to the impious

getting and spending, the ceaseless song og life. Have implicit faith in God

and be devoted to Him as your master and careter of the Lord, but never

entertain identity with Him.†The song Olympain- By Nadagouda..

muttu

– pearls

eidu

+ enTu = 5 and 8 make 13

What

are the 13 pearls that are a must for building the house where the soul and

mind together can play and enjoy bliss?

The

decoration of the house is the decoration of the avayavas of the body.

The

body is the house. The 5 karmEMdriyas, the 5 jNAnendriyas, manas , buddhi and

ahaMkara are the avayavas which have to be decorated with pearls. How to

decorate? This is answered by Sripadarajaru in the song ‘ bhushanake bhushana

idu bhushana…â€

nAligege

bhushana nArayana nAma

kAlige

bhushana hariyAtreyu … etc

All the

indiryas should be positively engaged in the seva of the Lord and such

engagement should be out of a heartfelt natural necessity to please the Lord

and not as a show of devotion or as a dry performance of duty.

The mind has to

contemplate on the guNas of the Lord. The buddi has to firmly engage the mind

in such contemplation and the ahaMkAra should accept the dAsatva of the soul to

the Lord. The concept of ‘dAsOham tava

dAsOham†should be right from the recesses of the soul and not just a

superficial agreement. The spontaneity of the expereince of the dAsatva bhAva is

the pearl of bhushana for the ahaMkara. ‘nAnu

Dasaru

is giving a simili for comparing the special guNa of vyApti of the Lord. He is

saying ,â€Can you imagine the universe inside the earth? “

The

impossibility of this situation , highlights a similar event- the Lord who has

anantha vyApti is visualised as a form lying on the sesha . PundarIkAksha is

the Lord with the indriyas which are like the lotus petal. The lotus is always

in the pond but it never shows signs of being soaked in the water. It remains

detached and fresh. This is a limited analogy to the Lord’s guNa called as

nirlEpa. He remains untouched by the impurities in the universe even though He pervades everywhere.

shaMkachakrAMkita puraMdaraviTTalanna jNANa maMTapadalli

Such

a infinite Lord occupies the heart lotus of all jivas and is the bimba murthy. Isn’t

it a wonder!

The

Lord is swatantra and infinite in His capabilities and that is the reason He

can do both. He can be the smallest of the small or biggest of the big. Dasaru

in one ughabhOga says

anuvige anuvAgi ghana ghanavAgi

guNAtraya tatvake mIrida doreyAgi…..

The

Lord appears in the most sowmya form for the sake of His devotees. Dasaru

envisions Him as the ‘ shaMka chakra dhAri viTTala†.
