Without Doing Much, Achieve Much.

The word “DAAN” or "DONATION" has a very wide definition

& doesn’t necessarily relate to Material Things only i.e, giving Money.

It also has Subtle aspects to it like -

"Giving your valuable Time to Help Others,

Sharing your Valuable Knowledge to Guide Others,

Praying for Others,

&

Utilizing your present Resources to the Maximum so as to Directly or In-directly Benefit Others."

But most of it is usually for the benefit of Humans only...so what about the Animals & Birds.

Sai Baba used to keep separate Earthen Bowls for feeding Food & Water to Birds and Dogs etc.

The Hindu scriptures too, advice us to keep separate a portion of freshly prepared meal, everyday,

of which a portion should be fed to the Cows,

a portion to the Crows,

and a portion to the Dogs.

It is said that by doing so one wards off many adversities he/she might be facing or might face in the Future.

It helps you not only Spiritually but also Astrologically for many a problems.

But not many of us can or do keep aside a portion of freshly prepared food for any animals or birds,

as on a daily basis it might not be possible to do this owing to the hectic lifestyle of this modern age.

But....

There are a few things which "Without Doing Much, One Can Achieve Much."

And that is -

IF NOT FRESH FOOD,

THEN FEEDING THE DAILY LEFT OVER EDIBLES / PEELS TO ANIMALS & BIRDS.

1. Put a Bowl of Water outside the Window or any Open High Space – For Crows or Sparrows & other Birds.

2. Put a Bowl of Water Outside the House – For Stray Dogs & Cats.

3. Left Over Food (Rice, Bread, Chapatis, Vegetables) – Feed the Crows or Cows.

4. Vegetable Peels / Fruit Peels / Raw Stems or Soggy Leafs of Spinach, Coriander, Fenugreek – Feed the Cows.

5. Soggy Salty Snacks / Unwanted Sweetmeats – Feed the Crows, Dogs or Cows.

6. Left Over Curd / Milk – Feed the Dogs or Crows

7. Millets / Grains - Feed the Pigeons or Ants.

8. When Eating Out, always get the Left Over Food packed for the Needy or Stray Animals.

Q) Feed the Animals / Birds Left Overs or Peels ?

It is Better than Not Feeding them Anything at all.

And Much Better than the things they have to Eat from the Garbage.

And Much Much Better than leaving them to Starve!!!

Have Penned a few lines –

“LEFTOVER....NO ONE ATE,

THERE ARE MANY NOT PROVIDED BY FATE,

SOMEDAY,YOU TOO COULD BE THE BAIT,

WELL, WHO KNOW`S THE DATE ?

SO, WHY WAIT…

BEFORE ITS TOO LATE,

MAKE LOVE CONQUER HATE,

FOR THE HUNGRY OPEN GODDESS ANNAPURNA`S GATE,

BY FEEDING ANIMALS & BIRDS OF WHATS LEFT ON YOUR PLATE,

AND BABA WILL SURELY BLESS YOU, AT AN UNBELIEVABLE RATE.

SO, JUST IN HASTE,

DON`T LET ANY FOOD GO WASTE,

AS, IT COULD BE THE ONLY MORSEL, SOMEONE WOULD EVER GET TO TASTE !!!"

SAIRAM,

Yes that is a good practice. I am an apt. dweller and have limited oppurtunity to provide food for strays but I keep sugar water for hummingbirdsin a feeder and grains and seeds in a container on my window ledge for other birds.

These are simple acts that really should just be part of everyday human life and not really any big acts of charity or sacrifice. Nevertheless it will have a benefical effect on our consciousness helping us to recognize the commonality of life beyond just the human species.

Bg 5.18 : TRANSLATION : The humble sage, by virtue of true knowledge, sees with equal vision a learned and gentle brāhmaṇa, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste] .

The bowl for the animals is mentioned in SaiSatCharitra of Shirdi SaiBaba. He would go from house to house , really to give His blessings, and the ladies would fill His jholi with fresh food. He ate only some and left a lot for the birds, cats, dogs. He really showed by example that we must not forget to feed them.

Many times there have been leftovers - if the birds eat it , that's great, but it can be hard to find animals who may be hungry at that time. I think having a bird feeder at the right place is also an art. One can also take food to the local animal shelter.

The stems and shoots that we throw away - never thought of leaving it out for the birds, that's a great idea.

However, dogs and cats can get allergies from some foods.
