You can consider reading an abridged version. You can also read an abridged version of the Bhagavatam. And then for a well-rounded perspective, read some material (the Shiva Purana or the Vayu Purana) on Shiva, Ganesha, etc and definitely the Devi Bhagavata. That should keep you busy for sometime. And with these, you would have learnt a lot about Hindu Gods and the background of the religion. Cheers

Gita Dharma 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2009 I would like to know alot more about hinduism but i dont know where to start the list of books is GIGANTIC!So i would like some help to which books i should read first in order to get the best understanding. I have all ready read Bhagavad Gita and im reading the story of Rama right now, but what books are the next? Mahabarata, the vedas or something else? I alway recommend the Ramayana first (and I consider you read more than one translation), then Mahabharata (this is a concise edition by Meera Uberoi) and then the Bhagavad Gita. That is the order in which the books were written. After that it is up to you - however I recommend you study the Gita regularly for life since there is a special blessing promised for such a "sacrifice of knowledge". The Brahmana varna considers the Vedas the most important. The Gita is the most popular book among Hindus in general and it is the most important to me personally.
