Can anyone explain me Why Krishna, Rama and even Ravana portrayed as blue skin color.

spacer.gif

Here's an exchange that took place in Los Angeles on January 8, 1968, after

Srila Prabhupada's lecture on Caitanya Caritamrta:

Guest: I have a question. I was wondering why Krsna is always portrayed as being

blue.

Prabhupada: Why the sky is blue? Can you explain?

Guest: Because the sky is blue?

Prabhupada: Yes, why the sky is blue? First of all, you try to explain this.

This you are seeing every day. Can you explain? You don't? You cannot? Sky is

blue! That's all! Therefore it is blue. Krsa is blue! Therefore He's blue.

Guest: But His consort, His consort is not blue.

Prabhupada: Sky is the reflection of Krsna's bodily effulgence; therefore it is

blue.

3.4.7. The Lord's body is blackish, but is eternal, full of bliss and knowledge, and very, very beautiful.

There is no relevance to compare sky and krsna body. then u can simply go on saying some fishes in the sea are blue like whales, dolphins do u find any relevance to why hes portrayed in blue.

I think and the word itself means 'black' then he should be black, in our culture black color is always looked down. so how can a hero be 'black'. if may tel that hes god so he can take any color, its can never be that, if hes born as a human he should be any of the color that human, if hes born differently i believe he would have be outcasted. he must have born as a black color or he must be a Dravidian bcos their color is black, i think after aryans invasion the Brahmanism there were racial discrimination, first with color the blacks would have been looked inferior , till now in our culture this still prevails. everybody wants to be white bcos we have in our blood that white is superior color, so how can a hero be protrayed whos color seems to be 'black'. so they made it blue color and there is no blue color in his body he should have been black which were looked inferior.

Thats y ravana and many asurans (so called devils) were protrayed in black color which symbols evil which is entirely biased which was done due to brahmanism. even Ravana who said to be evil, it is said that even his finger nails dint touch sita. it was portrayed as white as good and black as evil, so how can a hero be in black color. its al mere color, it was portrayed god as white and devils as black which is mere foolishness. There is no white or black, humans should be rated with their hearts not on their color. we have brothers who are black we have brothers who are white and all r equal and its only in our eyes we c black as evil and not in real. i would conclude

its mere racialism that he should have been portrayed in blue instead of black and i am not talking about the present situated where al r equal and there i hope we should change our view by seeing people til now in our society if somebody is white we say he/she beauty. the view should change. not only in india this view is every wer in our world. so lets be united in diversity.

Krsna is described as being blackish blue as the color of a fresh raincloud. This description, given from a perspective of His Janmabhumi (Vrindavana) indicates that his complexion reminded His viewers of the feeling of having their nomadic farmlands be quenched with rain thus providing life. Krsna's darshan is the life and soul of His loved ones. Bear in mind He is blackish blue like a fresh monsoon raincloud and is the life and soul of His beloveds.

Then Rama is portrayed blue, Shiva is portrayed blue, actually shiva is a Dravidian god borrowed by the vedic Aryans, Shiva should be black so everything thing must have made into blue body color and nothing more than that.

With all due respect, your point regarding Dravidian and Aryan Gods is arguably invalid. Reason that Dravidian Gods and Aryan Gods are a multitude of colors and not all blue. There are only certain Gods which have blue as their inherent tint. Generally, the adi-purush and adi-shakti aspects are deemed bluish or blackish. Hari-Hara, Vishnu, Shiva, Rama(more often deemed greenish but there are other interpretations) Kali Ma.

Dr. Varun Suthra has a relatively conclusive argument. Of course, with regards to your disagreement regarding the sky's color, or the oceans color, this is an inspired vision which links objects to their source. (What came first, the mango or the seed?)

If your question was purely rhetorical, please disregard my arguments.

I just could not stop laughing, were vedas written by Aryas?be clear that Vedas exist before any Dravidians or Aryans born in this world.

Maybe not, but if he beleives that, he can imagine himself superior to those silly hindus/yogis/devotees. A trap of the false ego.

I am not saying this is why Krishna is blue, but I thought I would share this with you.

There is a man who by using colidal silver turned his skin blue, unfortunatly I am unable to post the url because I am new to this forum, however it can be found on the youtube.

There are many wonderful unxplained things in and out of this world/dimensions/Universe, all for us to explore together, and given to us with love by a wonderful caring Creator/Source of all, who is known by many names.

Hi all,

Here is my conclusion on why Vishnu is blue. See these gods are basically powerful mahaarishis who started penancing so hard and subjected their bodies to several types of tortures before attaining god hood. So many a times it might so happen that they have penanced without food water etc and all these have had an adverse effect on their body. So they have slight bluish colur.Aint that cool?:)

Regards

They are portrayed as Blue. But actually it is Black. Because they were Black. Krishna and Shyam both mean black. But then the poets got into the act and made him blue. But it was Megha Varna. The colour of the clouds. Drowpadi was also black.

I do not think there is any problem in India in accepting that both Krishna and Rama were back in colour. Most of the Indians are brown or black.

Gods are created by the poets and painters. Everyone has his/her own conception of GOD.

Sometimes we try to impose our present values on Gods. If you have seen the Mahabharata serial you would have noticed that the only individual without a moustache was Krishna. Every one knows that even a hundred years back there were very few men in India without a moustache.

Again Rama without a moustache. How can there be a Kshatriya without a moustache? It is supposed to be a Kshatriya Lakshnam.

Then you have Shiva who is clean shaved. A God with matted hair who stays in the cremation ground, gets a clean shave every day. Funny.

But this happens to all the Gods. When did Jesus Christ who was a middle eastern Jew acquire Nordic features? Does the Pieta by Michael Angelo looks like two middle eastern Jewish figures?

GOD is omniscient and Omnipotent. He comes in whatever form the Bhakta wants. There are some Bhaktas who envisage Krishna as a woman because their Bhakti is Mathru bhava.

Body of Krishna is etheric body and divine being has the etheric body bcz the matter they live in not just an ordinary matter it is a divine matter, it is a matter of joy, itis cool matter. and that matter symbolizes the blue color.

Well put. Megha Varnam is not necessarily black or blue. Literal interpretations can be difficult. No one will ever know with their physical eyes what color Rama or Krsna is in comparison to the color spectrum we experience with our physical body. Megha Varnam is that of a rain cloud. For persons whose life depended on a good crop yeild, there can be nothing more refreshing, enlivening, joyous, or celebratory than a rain cloud, bringing life giving rain to the fields, streams, and mountains. They are seen with eyes colored by preme...prema anjana churita. Those who see Rama or Krsna with eyes not colored by prema will see something else.

we call him "Neela Megha shyama" which means Black cloud. A cloud full of water ready to drop on earth. Replace this symbolism with God's compassion, one of his many qualities. It means that he is ready to shower his blessings and favors on all the beings in the world, including humans, animals, birds, fishes etc.

Next Blue is What you see in the sky. Can you see any other color when the sky is clear? Forget the color for some time. Just imagine the sky. How big?Does it appear to have any begining, or end? Is it not expansive beyond one's imagination? That sky is BLUE!! So when God is symbolised as of blue color, it refers to his qualities but not actual skin color.

Similarly Black. Don't associate it with evil. If one travels in the space, after a few million miles, what he sees is not blue sky, but shining stars with a black background. Even that Blackness is infinite. So here Black symbolises infinity, that is beyond human comprehension.

Hence Krishna is referred to as of blue/black complexion.

Rama is not Black/emerald. He is the most temptingly beautiful person then on earth. He was described as " Ramo vigrahavan Dharmaha" and "Pumsam Mohana Rupaya"- meaning that if Dharma were to have a physical body and shape, it would be like Rama. You must have noticed a splendid aura/ attraction in the presence of pious people. That's it. Then 'Pumsam Mohana Rupaya'- he is the darling of many a male even, leave aside females. He is so attractive.

He is divinity personified.

I think this sums up the point. Black /Blue represent his qualities but not his skin color.

-Prasad.

actually God incarnates with various skin colours.

it is said that he will be white in the satya yuga, red in the treta yuga (rama), black in the dwapara yuga, and yellow in the kali yuga.

as for blue, it indicates that he can enter everything.

I once met a disciple of Srila Prabhupada I do not remember his name but he told me that he asked Prabhupada why is Krsna's skin blue and Prabhupada replied " Krsna has no skin". His divine colour is blue like a fresh rain cloud, he is born on the eighth day of the dark moon like Kali Ma who is also blackish. Lord Jagannath is also black and He came from Nila Madhav the blue stone.
