Colitis and Dairy

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I was diagnosed with colitis recently. I am a vegetarian and used to consume LOTS of dairy (2 lt of milk to 500 gm of yogurt everyday). I had to stop eating dariy cuz of colitis. As soon as I did this, symptoms stopped and I thought I was healed. I also took Trifala regularly during this period. Then a week or so later, one day I decided to try some yogurt and next monring my colitis flared up again and I could see some blood on paper tissue. I was sad and angry.

My ques is, how long till I can eat dairy again? I find it extremely hard not being able to drink milk, it leaves me hungry.

BTW, I do yoga 3 times a week on avg.

Thanks!

I dont know what substance/s in dairy cause/s the problem. But try soya products instead of dairy.

I dont know where you are located but in Australia it is easy to get soya products eg., soya milk, soy yoghurt, soy ice cream, soy mayonnaise etc from the supermarket.

But before you try that get advcie from you health care professional first.

Hope you' get better.

It's possible you won't be able to use dairy products without getting sick again.

thats what I have observed in the past 2 weeks. everytime I introduce a dairy item in my meals, I get sick again. :(

I will be visiting India soon and will be looking for advice of a few doctors (some that practice ayurved)

The thing is for someone who has survived on milk and milk product his entire life, its heartbreaking to know that I wont be able to have it again :crying2:

Thank you for your prayers, Malati.

I am in the US and we do get Soy. I have replaced milk with soy, but you can only have so much amount of soy. If you have too much of it (as much as I had milk) it has a negative effect on male hormones as its estrogenic and inhibits testastrone levels in males. This is why chinku's are so 'tiny tiny' :P Western media wont tell you this, cuz that would distroy the entire soy industry!

I understand. Cows milk was my favorite food as a child. It wasn't until I was 19 that I found out it was the cause of my chronic upper respiratory and sinus problems. I was sick alot with mucous related problems until I gave up dairy. That solved the problem for me.

I used a lot of tofu until a few years ago when my body suddenly developed an allergy to soy protein. Now it makes me as sick or sicker than cows milk and just as fast. So now all soy products are out of bounds.

Nuts seeds legumes provide all the protein anyone could need. So getting past these things is really a problem of conditioning and it can be tough.

Good luck.

Did you ever find out if you were lactose intolerant vs casein allergic?

if were casein allergic its tough to consume milk products but there are lactose free milk products if you ever want to drink milk again.

I was never fond of soy. As I mentioned before, its not a good for for males. In the past few months I replaced milk with soy cuz of my colitis, and trust me it does mess with a guy's sexual testatrone levels. Its not bad, but keep it in limits.

Nuts+legumes+grains are a great way to get a complete protien, but remember milk has the best calcium absorbstion rate in a veggie diet. I will miss milk :(

I used to think I was lactose intolerant but the added enzymes to digest the lactose never helped and also the symptoms were different. Then I realized it was the protein.

I would not touch dairy again even if I could digest it. The commercial dairy industry is one with the meat industry. To support the dairy industry is to support cow slaughter. Also it is a highly contaminated product.

I have read two sides to this argument and don't know which to believe. The weak plant estrogens in soy are said by some to reduce effective estrogen levels because they attach to the estrogen receptors without activating them and prevent the stronger edogenous estrogens from doing so thus magnifying the testosterone levels in the body. Others say they do activate those receptors magnifying the estrogenic effects on the body and thus reducing the testoserone to estrogen ration.

Not sure who is right but most reccommend a 25 grams of protein per day limit from soy.

Yeah I take supplemental calcium anyway in the form of calcium citrate 12-1500 mg a day with magnesium, d-2 2-3000iu, and boron 3mg. This plus weight bearing excercise keeps my bones strong.

You see I am still experimenting. I had lactose free milk and my symptoms stop. I take whey which has lactase added in it, and no signs of flareup.

I would guess that if it was casein I would be still having problems. I have deduced that its not milk protein in my case.

BTW, the doctors here are useless. They want to put a camera up my arse and gimme chemicals to treat this, when I have successfully gotten rid of the symptoms just by diet. Last week on my 3rd visit to the doc, I told him I have got my UC under control by diet. He is like BS, UC cant be treated with diet. I stood up and left that moment. What a arrogant dick! I cant wait to go back to india and have a chat with a specialist there.

I agree with you, results are not convincing. But you hit bang on that 25 gm limit. I was consuming around 35-40 gm of soy everyday, last year, and it just ruined me sex life.

Now I stick to 20 gm per day.

Some say unpasteurized dairy does not inflame the body. The heat is lethal to enzymes and bacteria so sometimes the milk is spoiled or off so you are drinking dead bacteria. Some states you can buy it. Might be worth a google search.

Re: Colitis

The following are excerpted synopsizes from:

The Acid-Alkaline Diet by Christopher Vasey, ND

There is only a minimum of discussion of colitis in the book.

I hope this is helpful to you. Acidity is an 'umbrella' reference term that refers to the ph-levels of any bodily organ or system. Acids are natural but acids in abundance require alkaline minerals to counteract the acids—the body uses alkaline minerals reserves already in the body to facilitate elimination/neutralization/oxidation of acids [elimination is via sweat, respiration, and urine].

Ys,

Bhaktajan

…………………………………………………………………………..

"How Acidification makes the body sick"

The first factor is the improper metabolic functions of the body due to a lack of or a depletion of enzymes [enzymes are derived from minerals and vitamins].

The second is the corrosive nature of acidity within the tissues ie: urethritis, cystitis, arthritis, neuritis, enteritis, colitis, and burning sensations in the anus.

Access acids allow for microbial and viral infection as well.

Acid activity lowers white blood cell count and strength.

The third is loss of minerals which are stored in all the body's tissues. Best known ailments are those affecting the skeleton and teeth [ie: osteoporosis, rheumatism, sciatica, brittle and sensitive teeth, weak hair structure and finger nails and gums, eyes, spinal column, lungs].

Acidification causes great fatigue, irritability and depression.

"ph" = potential to release hydrogen ions. The ph scale is 0 to 14. 7 indicates ideal neutral ph balance. [0 = absolute acidity. 14 = total alkalinity —where no hydrogen ions are released].

Strong acids come primarily from animal sources [fresh milk is not acidic]: uric, sulfuric and phosphoric acids.

Weak acids are: citric, oxalic, pyruvic, and acetylsalicylic acids. Weak acids are called 'volatile acids' because they are eliminated by respiration.

Magnesium, calcium, sodium, cobalt, copper and potassium are alkaline minerals.

Sulfur, Chlorine, phosphorus, fluoride, iodine and silicon are acidic minerals.

Modern diets are composed primarily by acidic foods (proteins, cereals, sugars, tobacco, coffee, tea, alcohol).

Acidosis sufferers must reduce their consumption of acids and "increase consumption of alkaline foods", reduce stress levels and beware of chemical additives and too many antibiotics.

Note: there are alkaline foods and there are acidic food and there are weak acid foods.

Reversing the acidification of the body goes to the root of these ailments and treats them all.

Taking Alkaline supplements is very helpful as a buffer, thus maintaining proper blood ph levels.

Check urinary ph level with drug store bought 'litmus paper'.

Note: The first morning passing of urine must be the darkest thus most acidic, otherwise these is a retainage of acid elements within the body.

Water aids in de-acidification [2 to 3 liters per day].

Carbonated & chlorinated water is acidic. Filtered, distilled water are stripped alkaline minerals. Mineral/Spring water listed as having a ph of 7 or higher is ideal.

To a lesser degree tap water filters strip calcium from the water thus making it acidic.

Green and colored vegetables are the best source of minerals including potatoes [raw, steamed, braised, roasted or juiced is ideal].

Toasting bread reduces its acidifying affects.

The most alkaline foods are: bananas, almonds, almond paste milk, potatoes, fresh milk, fresh whey, and fresh large curd cheese, fresh butter, fresh yogurt, blackstrap molasses, ginseng, wheat germ.

Best for de-acidifying the body:

Green food [wheat sprouts, barley grass, alfalfa sprouts, spirolina, kamut sprouts], enzyme supplements, prebiotic and probiotic complexes, and antioxidant complexes.

Glucose is transformed into citric acid, then pyruvic acid, succinic acid, and fumaric acid in succession, ending finally as lactic acid. This acid is then attacked by another enzyme that transforms it into energy—if there is an enzyme deficiency, the glucose transformation comes to a halt, and the result is acidification.

'Microform bacteria' [ie: candida albicans, other yeasts and fungi] in the intestinal flora causing gas, bloating and colitis, etc must be de-acified before spreading as fungal diseases (mycoses) as well as causing certain nervous disorders.

…………………………………………………………………………..

So, this should get you interested in researching this topic yourself.

Ys,

bhaktajan

That is an informative thread. By fresh on the milk and butter do they mean unpasteurized?

I used to go to a healer of the Amish and is was required that you take 2 t of blackstrap molasses every day. He could tell if you did not take it.

regarding the acid/alkaline chart...I often find different charts on the web contradicting each other. some place one food item under alkalinity and others as acidic. the explanation for this has been that some categerize on whether the final product is an acid or not. its quite confusing, but the rule of thumb i have developed is, the more green leafy veggies you eat, the more you are on the alkaline chart. nuts and fruits often get sectioned differently on different sites.

^ Thanks Dharini.

So does anyone take Trifala here? I used to take it only when I had gastric issues. But recently after the colitis thing, I take it quite regularly. Does this hurt in the long run? As in one would end up relying on it forever?

What about local organic dairy producers? we get organic dairy here where cows arn't injected with hormones and they eat organic fodder!

Yeah but organic is not enough for me ethically. The cows are still sold for slaughter organic or not. Their male calves are still sold to be slaughter for veal organic or not. I wouldn't touch cow's milk from cows headed for slaughter even if it could be proved that that milk was the elixer of youth that granted the body of a demigod.

To each its own, I guess.

Its the meat eaters that are responsible for the slaughter, not the ppl who raise them for milk. If a cow giving milk is slaughtered for its meat, how is it a vegetarians fault who consumes only its milk? Organic/traditional way of rasing and milking cows is very humane.

Organic/traditional way of rasing and milking cows is very humane.

The traditional way was to treat the cow as mother and protect her even after she cannot produce milk in abundance any longer and not to use her milk until production drops and then sell her to the meat house.

And along the way sell all her male offspring to be slaughtered as veal which is what the organic dairies do.

The issue is not milk it is cow protection.

But my question is, is it your fault that cows are being sluaghtered? i think you are unecessarily blaming yourself here. i drink milk for god's sake and it doesnt involve any killing of the animal. its not my karma that provocates them to kill, its the meat eaters fault :( why blame urself for this?

Vedicbot, the meat industry and the dairy industry are just different limbs of the same body.

Please investigate the dairy industry in more depth and once having done that hopefully you will withdraw your support from these demons.

I already have. My GF is a vegan. Though, I dont agree with you guys. I think you guys are carrying unecessary burdens. Your karma doesnt kill the cow, the meat eaters does. It would be inhumane to milk a cow if you tied the cow down by ropes and you forcefully milked her. Have you ever seen a cow struggling like a 5 yr old does when he/she needs to be given an injection?

As I said, to each its own. You have to draw a line somewhere in your reasoning.

I don't feel quilty and blame myself for cows being slaughtered vedicbot. I blame the meat eaters AND the drinkers of COMMERCIAL milk.

Yeah exactly. And what do you think happens at the factory farm dairy??? Do you think they are all happy little cows running in the pastuer pouring forth milk from their bags.

You need to listen to your girlfriend.
