I am new here. I read Bhagavad Gita and few more books. What mantra should I chant and how?

Try to find out which god or goddess is best for you and who is the one that you most like (what does he or she represent, her or his history,...)?

If you know the name of your kuldevta its best to chant his name if u have some ancestorial problems chant the name of dutta, if u r doing sadhana for a specific purpose chant the name of that god like "om saraswatya namaha" for better studies, "om laxmidevtaya namaha" for economic stability or else chant the name of lord shiva like om namaha shivaya" - the best for all. !!!

It depends a lot on your mental inclination...! You should choose a deity that fits your inclination,...!

 

The simplest is Om Namah Shivaya..! For Krishna/Vishnu it could be Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya...! As mentioned above, its best if you do Smaran of your family deity...!
