Guest guest Report post Posted September 4, 2004 Ganas are not gods. But they aren't exactly demons, either. They are "categories" of supernatural beings who travel with Lord Shiva, and are seen as causing delays, obstacles, and red tape. They come in a wide variety of types. Gandharvas are celestial musicians with wings (all male). Apsarases are sexy female temple dancers who distract Yogis with erotic fantasies. Kinnaras are horse-headed musicians who scare travellers. Pretas are ghosts who haunt the places near where they lived as mortals. Vetalas are body-stealing vampires. Bhairavas are animal-headed spirits who like to tease humans. Yakshas are nature spirits who dwell in trees, or deep under the earth. Dakinis are warrior women who travel with Kali. Nagas are serpent below the waist, human above, and hide treasures deep in the earth. There are lots more. If you are the sort who likes Western supernatural beings, like mermaids, fairies, centaurs and werewolves, you will probably enjoy reading about these Hindu equivalents, all of whom are commanded by Ganesha (Gana + Isha means Lord of the Ganas). -- Len/ Black Lotus <Ganesha sharanam> On Fri, 3 Sep 2004 06:05:26 -0700 (PDT) james richard <nhraddude71 writes: > Im a little confused. Guest guest Report post Posted September 5, 2004 Thanks for the info. So i guess beings like Hanuman and Vishnu would be Gods but all the lesser supernatural beings are Ganas? Do I get it now? I have heard the word Preta used in Tibetan Buddhism to describe the hell bound known as the hungry ghost with the small mouth and throught but large stomach and appetite so he can never satisfie his hunger and eating causes great pain. A lot of the Ganas you describe remind me of Mara the being that tried to disrupt the meditation of Sidhartha. Thanks again for the info. Jimkalipadma (AT) juno (DOT) com wrote: Ganas are not gods.
