Being born in southern part of india in Brahmin family , i see numerous devas and devis around , And to me , if you call him by name Shiva or Ganapathy or Muruga he doesnot mind , When u worship any one of the devas or devis ( ppl sayt demigods , but i am not fully aware of that concept ) Krishna will himslef help you through the Deva or Devis name , many people here fight on the name of Vishu and Shiva, but our great acharyaas and puranaas says that both are same and not different. But one thing is why it is always that Hinduism is looked down by other religion people, we are accepting that there may be another form of God , but why cant they . HINDUS RESPECT ALL OTHER FAITHS,BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THAT ALL RELIGIONS LEAD TO GOD. GOD MAY HAVE DIFFERENT NAMES, BUT THERE IS STILL ONE GOD Being a Iyyengar - Brahmin family my food cultur and Slang will differ , and especially the red line on my forehead which is called 'Thiruman" , I was always looked down by other caste people. Not only people but government too , there is very very less seats for a FC - Forward caste ppl like brahmins, A SC student ( who can be christian or Muslim ) can easily get into colleges with less marks. I Used to sit in Non veg resturants , although i dont have it , i sit next to my office coleges and enjoy the vegeterain food out there. I never felt bad about that , for me " IF u are in ROME be ROME " But that doesnot gives enough freedom to spoil our own nature. I wish i could learn karate or something , when it comes to beyond the limit , to show the meat eaters what the real will power is ! Raguraman thats pretty good news about your visit, but how did you went there , you had vehicle ? , i went by town bus and it was loong hard journey and i returned to chennai at midnight. Needless to say its worth going in all the trouble. May be Government can operate more buses to tht place , but it depends on how many people are coming there. These days no one is ready to do good things without money. But i was very happy to see similar temple in south little near to my place. I have got one more Poori jagannath temple in chennai near to Mahabhalipuram , a place called Kanathur , if you get time pls visit ( its before EJOY). Such a nice temple. Me and my friend went last sunday right at the time of the prayer. we really had a nice time there , when we went at 6:30 its the exact time for the pooja , there were around six brass plates which are distributed to play during pooja , the temple is built in one floor height and we can see the beach from the temple sannidhi , One shell is given to hearby person to blow it during pooja , it started and i had one brass plate to strike , the poojari told us how to strike , quickly everyone got onto the rhytham sequance he told and the sound hit the top of the mandapam , the door opened and poori jagannath , balaraman radhey are very beautiful decorated with flowers , the aarti went on , while that time , the shell was blown with high pitch , i gave the brass plate to my friend to let him have his chance... when i closed my eyes at front of him , i heard a heart striing rhythm from the brass plates , and in between the guy started blowing shell , right at that time , i felt as if krishna is blowing panjajanyam ..it went nook and corner of my heart and my mind . we had prasadham , the poojari has done archana for all of us , and gave prasadham , he also made thilak and everyones forehead , and while one rich guy offered him money , he has asked him to put it in hundi , that person sounded soo good to me . He gave ashirwaadh to the girl of that rich guy , he as very young poojari ,there were actullay two who has place nearby the temple. Then we worshipped vimala devi lakshmi . I have explained to my freind the paintings in the temple, the dhasavatahara sculptures ..and sat there for some time before we started. Even in Bhagwat gita after telling everything to Arjuna Krishna asks Arjuna to decide whats best for him and to take that. People can only show you the door its upto us to open the door and pass through it to see whats there on the other side. *****(This isnt the first time I've recieved such responses). Yes , when you do a right job , there will be soo many obstracles coming on your way , we should not sit back , we should pass through it , and you know why ? When you take up any good job God will give you some problems to check out whether you are really having will do to that job. I am sorry i dint mean to offend Tirisilex posting , i have expressed what i felt like , i thought why to search more about demigods when our supreme personlity is all around and we know the fact that even when he worship demigods the Supreme personality alone gives the power to them and hence we are getting the grace indireclty through Krishna alone. Thanks to ghari who posted excatly whats there on my mind. ok Tirisilex let me tell you something i know about kama. The lord Murugan is Shiva's son , there is story behind his birth. There was one asura names , edumban and he was giving trouble to people. When everybody worshipped shiva for saving from the asura , shiva was on deep dhyaana and didnot listen to anyone as such. When people wanted to disturb shiva's dhyaana but was afraid of shiva's anger. Maa parvathi approched Kama - the god of love to wake up shiva using his arrow of love. Kama hesitated first and then agreed for world peace. He used his bow made of Sugarcane and arrow made of good smelling flowers and used on lord shiva. Shiva opned his eyes and he opened his third eye also, the agni came from the third eye made Kama into ashes and then fell on the nearby pond on six lotus flowers. Rathi prayed Shiva for giving her husband back and shiva understood the cause for the disturbance and brought Kama back to life. Six children were born from that ashes on the lotus flowers and they were taken care by six young ladies. When the right time came , all six children were hugged by parvathi devi and became one kid murugan with six heads. Thats why lord Murugan is also called Aarumugam. the mantra to please him is SA RA VA NA BHA WA - 6 letts which means bowing to Saravanan - the Murugan. Needless to mention that Murugan has told the meaning of Pranavam - the Meaning of OM to lord Shiva and Shiva neeldown to hear that from Murugan , making Murugan has master and himslef as student. There are soo many stories about lord Murugan and there are 6 great temples in south of india for him. In Vishnavisam Krishna is called as " Alangaarapriyar " which mean the liker of dressings. We do soo many dressings to our lord idol and take it round the temple. In Shyvam who are the worshippers of Lord Shiva , the Murugan is called as " Alangaarapriyar " .And Shivites do soo many good dressings to lord Murugan. I personally like Murugan also a lot and i do feel that Krishna appearance and Murugan appearance are similar , Murugan always have peacock next to him and do all lila like krishna. That is dont expect results should be like this or that , becuase that is unlikely that the results will be what you expected. There is a saying in Tamil " karmaavay sei palanai edhirpakkadhey " which means do the duty and dont expect the results , but how can one do that ? , this mentality will not come easliy , we all expect in one way or other, and we get dissopointed if things doesnot happen to what we expected. Every principle is given to make the human mind free from worldly troubles and to reach GOD. So do the Duty and leave the rest to God. he knows whats best for you ! Love life and yogi life are two ways of living as per the puraanas. its mentioned as Samsara - Called illaram in tamil ( ill mean home & arama means dharmam )-the earthly life ( if this is the correct translataion ) - Getting marrried to one person , perform all duties to God and playing very good role in making his surrounding a better one , always helping otehrs, no bad habits, and always truthful. Above all lending helping hand to always waiting to give food for sanyaasis. Yogi life - Called thuravaram in tamil ( thuravu means yogi , the one who looses all his belongings and becomes sanyaasi and araam means dharmam ) One time one sishya asked his guru to tell him which is the best way of life , either to become sanyaasi or to become family head and serve all . Guru took the student to a swayamwara where hundereds of kings are standing for the princes to see them and choose one among them to get married. Princes goes to a sanyaasi and puts the garland in his shoulders. Sanyaasi shocked for a moment told that he cant leave his yogi life and become samsara , but the maharaja insisted that he has only one daughter and he can spare all his kingdom to the sanyaasi, the sanyaasi refused and started running. the maharaja and princes started chasing sanyaasi , and so the guru and sishyaa. after sometime the sanyaasi gone somewhere deep in the jungle and maharaja , princes were settled somewhere to have rest. Guru and sishya also settled nearby to watch whats happening. There were two parrots on the top of the tree where the maharaja was taking rest , those two parrots seeing the maharaja and princes, came down to them and bowed thier head in front of raja and started speaking. " Hey maharaja , we know you are a great kind and there is no chances for sadness in your kingdom , now you have come to our place , and we have to treat you , we dont have anything right now to give to you for eating , so please eat us , we will step in the fire which is nearby and give ourselves as food to you " The maharaja was happy about the samsaara dharma the parrots were making in order to serve the guest , but he stopped them from doing so. But the parrots wanted to satisfy the huger of the king and princes so they went into the fire without waiting for the argument to continue. Now the Guru started telling the truth to the sishyaa. The Sanyaasi who ran , even when he knows that he will get princes and kingdom is great , as he is ready to loose anything to attain God though his Sanyaasi Dharma. On the other hand the parrots were also greate , becuase they want to perform the duties for the samsaara to attain god and they are ready to loose thier life for treating the guests. It doesnot matter which form of life you are choosing , both if followed correct are good. When you loose all ur interst on the samsaara then you can go to Yogi life, having half minded , and having attachment towards worldly life if one goes to yogi life, he wont be able to continue and obviously do more mistakes than a normal man. Hinduism doesnot asks one to go for yogi life , some may turn to be yogi in very young age due to grace of God and the thier Karma and some after finding all happiness in the world will find Yogi life is the ultimate pleasure will move towards yogi life. But one who is in samsara dharma and performs all duties to his soicety family and God , will reach the God jus like a Yogi do ! Chanting his name and always keeping in mind that serving others is serving God. In fact there is a tamil saying . haribol ! Thanks for a good write up on caste system , i always wanted to make out a good writing to post here , if u can get a tamil book named " engey brahmnan ? " where is brahmin book by cho ramaswamy . Pls try to get it , if it is there in english version well and good , all our friends can read it . This book is writtern 70s and still worth to read. This excalty speaks about who is true brahmin . Its been clrealy stated that one who follows a set of rules are said to be born twice , that is brahmnan .Not by mere birth one is considered as Brahmnan. Krishna also says that he has created 4 varnam depending on the thought and karma ( action ) people do. And he doesnt mention any where that because of birth one can be brahmnan and one can be sudra. This book still gives many more details for hinduism. Some of great aazhvaars who wrote great vedantic slogas are not brahmnans , infact its mentioned that god has come down to do seva fot them. In fact we worship Krishna who is not a brahmin and Rama who is also not brahmin by birth but indeed they become god on thier actions. This is the best ever example god can give to make men believe that birth doesnot make any one brahmin. But only people who read these things misinterpretated( as usual ) Lets imagine a future , where doctors decides to make thier children as doctors only , similarly engineers as engineers alone , and business mens as business mens alone. Then there will be group of communities called doctors engineers and business mans, Doctors may consider themselfs higher , since they cure and save others and make thier sons and daughter marry another doctors alone . Similarly engineer can consider them as next higher people since they build homes and office and so on.. Slowly if there is any inter caste marriage between doctors and engineers then fight will occur and hence the story will go like what the present caste based system works. In my opimion our caste based system of living might have come to existence this way only. Not based on what they think and do but based on birth everyone are considered as brahmnas jus like doctors kids can be considered as doctors. But only by practising the doctor post one can become doctor , similarly by practising true brahmnasim one can become brahmin. In fact in kali all are considered as sudraas and no true brahmnan exists. I feel this has come for ages and changing them is not possible.May be new generation will be better but it cant be made 100% caste free system.
