Study Shows Antixoidants in Grapes May Be a Weapon in Blood Pressure Battle By Bill Hendrick WebMD Health NewsReviewed by Elizabeth Klodas, MD, FACCOct. 29, 2008 -- A hardy helping of grapes may fight high blood pressure and heart disease if you eat a salty diet, a new University of Michigan study shows. Because black, green, and red grapes contain high levels of naturally occurring antioxidants, the fruits may reduce hypertension that can lead to heart failure, shows the study, published in the October issue of the Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences. Scientists including Mitchell Seymour, MS, report that flavonoids -- found in abundance in the skin, flesh, and seeds of grapes -- may be the substances that provide the beneficial effects they found in their study of laboratory rats. Grapes and High Blood Pressure The researchers studied the effects of regular table grapes -- a blend of green, red, and black fruits -- that were fed to rats in powdered form. After 18 weeks, rats that ate the grape-enriched powder had lower blood pressure, better heart function, and reduced inflammation throughout their bodies than comparable rodents that didn't receive the mixture. Rats on salty diets plus hydralazine, a blood pressure medicine, had lower blood pressure, but their hearts weren't as protected from damage as the animals fed grapes. "These findings support our theory that something within the grapes themselves has a direct impact on cardiovascular risk, beyond the simple blood-pressure-lowering impact that we already know can come from a diet rich in fruits and vegetables," says Seymour, who manages the University of Michigan Cardioprotection Research Laboratory. Steven Bolling, MD, who heads the program, says the rats in the study were in a similar situation as millions of Americans who have high blood pressure related to their diets and who develop heart failure because of prolonged hypertension. "The inevitable downhill sequence to hypertension and heart failure was changed by the addition of grape powder to a high-salt diet," Bolling says. "Although there are many natural compounds in the grape powder itself that may have an effect, the things that we think are having an effect against the hypertension may be the flavonoids, either by direct antioxidant effects, by indirect effects on cell function, or both." Such naturally occurring substances already have been shown to reduce other potentially harmful molecular and cellular activity, the researchers say in a news release. The study notes that grapes and other fruits high in antioxidant phytochemials show promise, as does research on the impact of red wine on heart health. Still, the best advice for people with blood pressure problems is to cut down on the amount of salt they get, Bolling says. "There is, as we know, a great variability, perhaps genetic even, in sensitivity to salt causing hypertension," he says. "Some people are very sensitive to salt intake, some are only moderately so, and there are perhaps some people who are salt resistant. But in general we say, 'Stay away from excess salt.'"

That’s a good point that I have really not over looked. Many friends of mine avoided the gun buy back here in Australia and kept their semi-automatic rifles like M-14, mini-14s, H.K-93s and 91s, AR-15s, AK-47s and my favourite, the Velmet Hunter etc because no one knows what the future holds, my point is giving a fully automatic weapon to an eight year old kid, is ridicules. The doctor's plan was to start removing the ventilator today. Today early in the morning Guru Maharaja came to awakeness from his sleeping state. He asked again for clicker to chant mentally and chanted few mantras on it after that he became tired and slept for a while. Since his condition was stable the doctors put the ventilation off without removing the tubes to check how Guru Maharaja was responding. For 2 hours Guru Maharaja was able to breathe by himself but later felt uncomfortable therefore the ventilator was turned on again. Since then Guru Maharaja is exhausted and is taking rest. Guru Maharaja's sugar level is normal. His platelet count is 82,000 today*. Although his BP is fluctuating still nothing alarming. The doctors will continue this process until he is able to breathe normally without the help of ventilator. Let us keep intensely praying and chanting. Who is H. H. Jayapataka Swami? Jayapataka Swami was born John Gordan Erdman on April 9, 1949, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, North America and was later given the name 'Jayapataka dasa' upon receiving initiation into the Hare Krishna movement, by his guru, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Presently he is one of the initiating spiritual masters ( diksa gurus) of ISKCON and a member of the Governing Body Commission (GBC), is a divisional trustee for the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT), and an ISKCON swami. Also, as far as the fallen souls of this world are concerned, it is also the selfless humble mercy of the devotees that saves us all and delivers us to Krsna and not Krsna personally. Eight year old boy shot to death in gun show 'accident' 00:07 AEST Tue Oct 28 2008 49 minutes ago An eight-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair. The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club, police Lieutenant Lawrence Valliere said. The boy was with a certified instructor and "was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury", a police statement said. Police called it a "self-inflicted accidental shooting". The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Centre where he died. His name was not released. Although the death appears to be an accident, police and the Hampden district attorney's office were investigating, officials said. The club said on its website that the event, run in conjunction with COP Firearms and Training, is "all legal and fun". People were allowed to fire weapons at vehicles, pumpkins and other targets, it said. The sportsman's club was founded in 1949 and describes itself on its internet site as an organisation that promotes "the interest of legal sport with rod, gun, and bow and arrow, both directly and through training". This morning the doctor said he may remove ventilator and all tubes within the next 24 hours if every things goes as it is now. Maharaja is now more conscious but very emotional. By seeing devotees tears come from his eyes. The doctor said we have to completely stop any devotees going to meet maharaj including senior devotees because as soon as devotees go to meet him due to excitement his blood preassure increases. If devotees will not stop visiting Maharaj, the doctor said, they will not be able to make him free from ventilator. His blood pressure is ok now. Bloolet count is no more decreasing even without medecine. He seems to be more reciprocative. By seeing all these symptoms the doctors feel more satisfied. Few astrologers have said HH’s condition will reman critical to some extend untill 28th Oct. because of tithi is Amavasya. After that things will go better. But still untill Nov. 14th we have to be careful. We are very thankfull to the devotees around the world who are praying for HH’s quick recovery. Yesterday the doctor saw him coughing and said it is a good symptom. This means the bodily system has started to function. A visiting doctor asked Maharaja to first lift the left hand which he did. Not only that, he also articulated all his fingers very well. The doctor then asked him to lift the right hand, he wasn’t able to lift it well. He said some physiotheraphy would be required. Later Dr. P.P Ashok came and asked Maharaja to lift his legs. Maharaja lifted both the legs and started to move them in the air 3 to 4 times. Maharaja also pointed to the tube in the mouth indicating he wants to speak. Therefore the doctor said that Maharaja is showing excellent responses and that he understands everything 100%. Maharaja had good eye contact with the doctors the whole time. The doctor gave instruction to the nurses that they could start removing the tubes one by one.
