I have a cat. In my opinion he is very auspicious and lucky to have Krishna Conscious parents...He will make advancement from this...by constantly hearing the Holy Names when I chant or do bhajan... He will take birth in His next life as a human being with more facility to perform devotional service.
He was born on Easter Sunday. We named him Benny~Krishna. We NEVER feed him cow, but only cat food with poultry or fish. The level of practice that my wife and I are at is fine with us, and we sorta know what the next level would be in many areas. We do what we can and don't trip about our not being perfect devotees.
Cats, despite all their cleaning, shed and also spread dander (dead skin)... also they can ruin a food offering if they should look apon it before offered.
My cat seems to show great interest when I play my harmonium. he alsways lays around, looking medatative. He also enjoys prasadam... though sorta selective in what he'll eat.
The way I see it is this... He was born with a perfect body for eating meat. I wasn't and have no plans on eating his food.... someday he will leave his body. My wife and I got him very early on in our sadhana, after he leaves us, we probably won't get another cat...
I may be mistaken, but I think Lord Krishna and Balarama had many pets?
I know it may not be the standard... but like I said, I am not there yet, though I strive to always make some advancement when and where I can. I had alot of interesting exchanges with devotees on forums a few years ago regarding cats and pets and KC. I never did get a solid answer on anything and decided not to go mental over it.

The version done by Jai Uttal on his Spirit album is so sublime. I also like Bhagavan das's version. I give both a listen to almost everyday at work. I can't find a translation yet online, just the lyrics.

I read from time to time on forums about Vaishnava Aparadha and whether or not we are offending eachother with our comments... What to speak of ettiquette. I found this in the "Vaishnava Culture" handbook. I thought others might be interested in a re-fresher of or even intro to what the mad elephant offenses are.
Offenses to the Vaisnava
Vaisnava-aparadha, or offense to a Vaisnava, is called "the mad elephant offense."
Offences mentioned in Hari Bhakti Vilasa
To make fun of a devotee
To kick or hit a devotee
To criticise a devotee
To anger or become angry at a devotee
To envy a devotee (see also Srimad-Bhagavatam 9.11.23 purport)
To not be pleased to see a devotee
To disrespect a devotee
To not greet a devotee with obeisances
Four kinds of blasphemy of a devotee from Harinama Cintamani
To criticise him because of :
His caste
Some unpremeditated accidental fall-down
The last traces of his previous sins
His sinful activities prior to his surrendering to Lord Krishna.
Examples of Offenses from Prabhupada's Books
To touch a Vaisnava with one's feet (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Antya 14.25 purport)
To disobey the spiritual master. The most grievous type of Vaisnava-aparadha is called guru-aparadha, offenses at the lotus feet of the spiritual master. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.21.37 purport)
To verbally chastise a devotee. E.g. When King Rahugana verbally chastised Jada Bharata, he committed a Vaisnava-aparadha. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.10.17 purport)
What are the consequences of committing offences?
Examples from Prabhupada's books:
Saubhari Muni (Srimad-Bhagavatam 9.6.49 purport) fell down because he committed an offense to a Vaisnava by impeding Garuda's plans for eating. Garuda wanted to eat a fish, but Saubhari Muni unnecessarily gave the fish shelter.
Gopal Cakravarti (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Antya 3.213 purport): Disagreeing with Haridasa Thakur's statements about the potency of the holy names, Gopal Cakravarti became angry and said that if it were not true, he would cut Haridasa's nose off. Three days later, Gopal's nose melted away from leprosy.
Ramacandra Puri (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Antya 8): Having criticized and offended his spiritual master, Ramacandra Puri developed a fault-finding mentality and material desire gradually appeared within him. He became so fallen that he even criticised Lord Caitanya.
The remedy for Vaisnava-aparadha
A Vaisnava-aparadha cannot be atoned for by any means other than by begging the pardon of the offended Vaisnava.
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.26.24 purport)
If anyone offends a devotee in a moment of delusion or madness, he must fall at the devotee's feet and repent bitterly and, weeping and full of contrition, beg forgiveness. He should declare himself a fallen wretch, in need of that devotee's grace. A devotee is very merciful; his heart will soften and he will embrace the offender, thus exonerating him from his offenses. (Harinama Cintamani)
Examples from Prabhupada's books
Sacimata (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Adi 17.72 purport):Sacimata made an offense by accusing Advaita Acarya of persuading Visvarupa to take sannyasa. Thereafter, Lord Caitanya induced her to take the dust of Advaita Acarya's lotus feet, and thus she nullified her vaishnava-aparadha.
Durvasa Muni: (Srimad Bhagavatam) Even when Durvasa Muni took shelter directly of the lotus feet of the Lord, he could not be saved-only when he begged forgiveness at the feet of the devotee he had offended, Maharaja Ambarisa.
Gopal Capala (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Adi 17.37-59): Being envious of Srivasa Thakura, Gopal Capala tried to defame him by placing the paraphernalia for worshiping Durga outside his door. Later, he was attacked by leprosy and suffered great pain. Seeing Lord Caitanya, he took shelter of His lotus feet and begged for His mercy, but Lord Caitanya only got angry. But then showing His mercy, Lord Caitanya instructed him to beg forgiveness from Srivasa. He then was saved.
Naturally, one will sometimes see a Vaisnava correcting another. He will point out the other devotee's mistakes and shortcomings and appear to be criticising the devotee's behaviour or attitude.

Likewise, it is a pleasure to make your aquaintence... I am sorry to hear that you are distracted from your sadhana... I pray that you will find the strength to continue on with your devotional practices never-the-less... infact esp. when faced with trying circumstances... perhaps you will find that maya becomes just a little easier to untangle from as we stick to our commitments.
It sounds like you are in an isolated place... perhaps you can attract others who are like minded. You will be amazed how many devotees there are all over the world. Recently, while visiting my father in a small town in Hawaii, I was saddened by thinking I would be out of the reach & association of devotees, and it turned out that there were many...

In my limited experiences, I have found that by breaking open a Vitamin E capsule and rubbing the oily substance on the darkened area will reduce colouration over time...
There is plenty of info online about Vitamin E in this regard.

I can relate. My wife, in the beginning, felt threatened by my interest in becoming a devotee. I think she feared that I would leave her and run off to become a monk, or that I would live like a monk at home and deny her affection.
Years later now, she appreciates alot about KC, and has love for Krsna, but involvement with the temple is not really her thing. As well, out of respet for her, I try not to be overbearing about KC and keep alot of my practices personal and do them on my time. She has come around alot though, simply by demonstrating over the years, and sadly it has taken years, that I am not leaving her or denying her, infact I think I have become a better husband.
She likes to cook for Krsna and offer the food... She likes the paraphenalia, art, murtis, etc... and stays weary of any reference to women being lesser than, etc...but still hates it if I wear dhoti or tilaka.
I pray that in time your husband becomes more tolerant of your devotional practice. Krsna is the ultimate attraction, and your husband is destined to become more and more attracted, over time.
I hope I have not spoken out of turn. Your post reminds me of my marriage in many ways.

Every now and then I will find some nectar at a used bookstore. For whatever reason, someone will sell one of their gems, and lucky for me, I will find 'em. And more often than not it will be on a significant day, like when I found these two following books, it was on Radhastami...
The two recent books I have aded to my collection are:
"A Ray of Vishnu" by Rupa Vilasa Dasa
and
"Appreciating Sri Vrndavana Dhama" by Mahanidhi Swami
"A Ray of Vishnu" is a wonderful biography of Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. What an amazing and empowered life He led! Truly amazing accounts of His dedication to spreading the teachings of Lord Caitanya all over India an the world. I gain even more respect for Srila Prabhupada now that I am learning more about His spiritual Master.
"Appreciating Sri Vrndavana Dhama" is a nectar rich book describing Vrndavana, its inhabitants, temples, histories (both in this rhealm and in the spiritual), pastimes of Lord Krsna, and the rediscoveries of special sites, etc... It really paints such an attractive picture of the Holy Dhama.
I love it when I find special books like this in a bookstore filled with mostly nonsensical subjects and works. I would be interested in hearing if others have found used books or had unique experiences on special days.

What a wonderful time of year, so many occasions to celebrate. infact, all year round... Never have my wife and I had so much to discover, celebrate, share... since our desire to learn about, appreciate, and practice Vedic culture.
So many occasions, appearance days, dissappearance days... every day spent trying to serve Lord Krsna and devotees is cause for a celebration.

I have been reading about Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati's amazing pastime's in "A Ray of Vishnu" by Rupa Vilasa Das
It describes that in 1905, at the age of 31, He began His great vow of chanting 3 lakhs (192 rounds) per day. As well, He observed Caturmasya. (p.27)
I was wondering where the guidelines for Caturmasya come from? when did the practice start and why?

Reading of all the nice sweet words from those whose hearts you have touched had me thinking that you managed to please practicaly everyone here at these forums and serve them in some way or another, what to speak of the countless devotees in your life...and then I saw that the very nice website I use art from was yours.....and I am that much more saddened over your departure. I did not get a chance to thank you, to get to know you, to call you a friend. You set quite a nice example of how to live one's life for Krsna. You have inspired my wife and myself to take up painting for Krsna...we are eternaly grateful. I write my little farewell here in the test section for it is just for you from me, and I am a stranger here and have not the sweet wonderful things to say to you like your Godbrothers and Sisters have.
