  2. Why not? Srila Prabhupada cited many such works, as does Sripad Naryana Maharaja every day. Moreover, Srila Prabhupada wanted his disciples to present those works to the world., and many of his disciples are doing so, as is Narayana Maharaja.

  5. Whatever is essential, that is, whatever doesn't contradict the spirit of the Bhagavatam, may be accepted. Your question raises another issue: what constitutes shastra? You may have some burden, especially among followers of the Bhagavatam as taught by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, to establish whatever is written by Osho or any vamamarga tantrikas must be accepted as shastra. But if there is something in there that supports the essence of the Bagavatam--that all materially motivated religion is completely rejected, as we see in the second verse, which essentially states it thesis--then someone may accept that. But that doesn't mean they eat the whole flower. If you read that verse in context, you'll see it's not about indiscriminately accepting whatever someone who poses as a sadhu says, but about how saintly persons only accept what's necessary for their spiritual progress.
  6. theist, you missed this paragraph, which changed my life when I read it 40 years ago: In the Vedas, the above-mentioned four activities are prescribed in the regulative way so that there will not be any undue competition for sense gratification. But Srimad-Bhagavatam is transcendental to all these sense gratificatory activities. It is purely transcendental literature which can be understood only by the pure devotees of the Lord who are transcendental to competitive sense gratification. In the material world there is keen competition between animal and animal, man and man, community and community, nation and nation. But the devotees of the Lord rise above such competitions. They do not compete with the materialist because they are on the path back to Godhead where life is eternal and blissful. Such transcendentalists are nonenvious and pure in heart. In the material world, everyone is envious of everyone else, and therefore there is competition. But the transcendental devotees of the Lord are not only free from material envy, but are well-wishers to everyone, and they strive to establish a competitionless society with God in the center.

  8. Srila Sridhara Maharaja often spoke of the danger of trying to control the free flow of faith. Many devotees have taken shelter of Sripad Govinda Maharaja's guidance. Forcing everyone to do so would be contrary to everything we've been taught by our acharyas. (The same goes for those who insist we must all take shelter of Sripad Narayana Maharaja's guidance.)
  9. Well said, theist. This is a good example of the dangers you risk when you rely uncritically on Wikipedia as a source. Hell, I could make an entry that says that Srila Prabhupada secretly instructed me that I'm the next acharya of ISKCON. That would really trip some folks up.

My spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, cited this verse as the standard for measuring spiritual progress: bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra caisa trika eka-kalah prapadyamanasya yathasnatah syus tustih pustih ksud-apayo 'nu-ghasam Devotion, direct experience of the Supreme Lord, and detachment from other things -- these three occur simultaneously for one who has taken shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in the same way that pleasure, nourishment and relief from hunger come simultaneously and increasingly, with each bite, for a person engaged in eating. (SB 11.2.42)

  14. I'm certainly the wrong guy to ask about that. I'm afraid I'm pretty solidly lined up behind Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, and Srila Prabhupada. I'm working on dedicating my life to the holy name, who is competent to reveal our inherent identity.

  16. You should repose your faith in the process of sad-anga saranagati, the life of all the devotees. Whether you believe anything I say, or anything Srila Prabhupada says, certainly has nothing to do with me.
  17. You're making the same mistake made by a former ISKCON temple president, back in 1973. Simply because I was from Hawaii, this poor character assumed I was Siddha's follower. In fact, I was living in the Honolulu temple for almost a year before Siddha joined, and I was never his follower. He was my friend, but he was never my guru. Yeah, lots of foolish people claimed we weren't really ISKCON in Hawaii. Srila Prabhupada had a different opinion. The truth is that I was deeply involved in the old ISKCON for several years before your brief dabbling in ISKCON life. Whether I'm orthodox ISKCON or not may be a different question. Krishna-kirti, my right-wing friend, might tell you I'm a Reformed ISKCON type, rather than an Orthodox ISKCON type. Some people here in Alachua will say different things, Frankly, I don't give a damn about such silly labels. Well, depending on what you ask them about, you're likely to get very different answers. Have fun with that. Um, congratulations? (I don't know what sort of response you want for your declaration. I just find it kind of sad when someone think they have to compare themselves to me to feel better. You might want to aim a little higher next time.)
  18. This is simply overstating the case. I have spent enough serious time in ISKCON to take seriously Srila Prabhupada's statement quoted above, that we should read the Goswamis' and other acharyas' books. And that takes into account my being in the LA temple room in 1973 when he said we couldn't understand the previous acharyas' books except through him. I also know for a fact that he approved--perhaps even instructed--Goursundar's project of translating Jaiva Dharma. I was in his room in LA in a private meeting, also in 1973 (no secretary, no GBC guy--he kicked them all out and asked them to close the door), when he expressed surprise that Goursundar went to London to get a Bengali edition from the Gaudiya Math there. Srila Prabhupada said, "If he had asked me, I could have gotten him one very easily."
  19. It's no news that Pankaja sometimes gets discouraged, so we shouldn't be surprised. And I'm not particularly worried. We should also note that he is not initiated by an ISKCON guru. His guru is Sripad B. V. Puri Maharaja, who recently left our company. The best thing we can do is assure Muddy that we are his friends, unconditionally.
  20. Radharani's body is made of love for Krishna and compassion. That's why they call her Krishna-prema-mayi and Kripamayi.
  21. It seems hard to name a "favorite" character in such a complex drama. I find Vidura and Gatotckacha perhaps the most likable. Gandhari is an inimitable example. Kunti's forbearance is admirable. Draupadi is really something as a warrior princess. Bhisma and Karna may be the most interesting. But an even more interesting, likeable, and admirable character is my favorite: the center and catalyst of the whole story, Krishna.
