I agree with the "honest" part, but "inspiring"...............I don't know.

    He seems depressed.

I am sorry for him if he is.

I don't know for sure what the cure is.

If he is chanting Maha-mantra and not feeling bliss and tasting nectarine freshness in his soul, then that is very sad.

I know it takes time to get to the stage of actually feeling the direct effect of Namakirtan.

I think I must have attained something in previous lifetimes.

Otherwise, I can't explain why I feel so much pleasure in chanting Maha-mantra.

There is no option but to just stick with the process and hopefully someday he will start to relish the nectar of the Holy Name.

Maybe he should get away from ISKCON?

The atmosphere there might be very polluted now.

Maybe he should take off the costume and wear some pants?

Thanks, yes, you're correct, didnt read the portion where he says, "in the last two weeks four of my disciples have left their bodies", this is of course somewhat depressing:eek:.

And since he says that, "He chose to have Suhotra Maharaja leave his mortal body and take birth again", that even Sohotra Swami has to take birth again - what is the destiny of his disciples?

  2. Shaunaka Risi das is addressing in his article (also published in "The Guardian"), Hinduism and Modernity, the ongoing debate, why do we need the Hare Krishnas in our modern Western world - a world of the most efficient globalization network, all humanity, and even the demigods up to Brahmaloka, have ever seen?

    Hinduism and Modernity

http://www.prabhupada.org/rama/?p=3952<!-- the main section of the post goes here --> ShaunakaRishiDas.jpgBy Shaunaka Rishi Das

This article appeared in The Guardian’s Face to Faith column, July 1, 2006. ( Look at it here with all the numerous comments )

Hinduism’s focus on the eternal questions of self means it will thrive in the face of modern life, writes Shaunaka Rishi Das.

What hope is there for Hindu culture in the face of modernity and globalisation? These latter terms are very broad, and often difficult to define. But then again, so is Hinduism.

In recent years India has become a world-class industrial, economic and nuclear power, a development which belies its mystical setting and superstitious reputation. The rickshaw-walas of any major city, driving while speaking on their cell phones, deliver you to the shopping mall to look for a pizza.

Yet the traffic is two-way with words like guru, mantra and karma being used globally. Meditation, yoga and chanting are common practices of the stressed and cool among us. Many Hindus now hail from countries other than India, including westerners and a third generation of non-resident Indians, the British and American Hindus.

To its horror, Hinduism is sometimes only known for the infamous caste system, the kind of thing our modern world strives to eradicate because of its lack of democracy, its servile spirit and the subjugation of the individual. A ripe case to be bombed by Bush, the doyen of freedom and democracy. But wait Mr Bush, as all may not be as it seems. To clarify this we turn to Charles Bukowski. Although he wrote, “As the spirit wanes the form appears” in reference to poetry it is also a surprisingly good understanding of the Hindu worldview.

Hindu thinking is based on the primacy of the individual. In the Bhagavad-gita, Krishna begins by defining the atman (the individual self) as being eternal - not material but spiritual. Krishna insists that the question of who we are needs to be resolved as the first item in both philosophy and spirituality. Otherwise, after Krishna offered his teachings to his friend Arjuna he could not have invited him to make his own choice by saying, “now do what you wish to do”.

With this definition of the individual Hindu thought looks at our desires. Here is where the “waning of the spirit” generally begins. The mantra of our times is “if it feels good, do it”. We greatly resent our freedoms and desires being curtailed. Like children, we demand our desires to be satisfied now.

The individualism of modern times tends towards a materialistic worldview. Rather than a vision of serving the world we ask the world to serve us. Hindu traditions would claim that this individualism, asserting its rights at every opportunity, is destroying the fabric of society and even nullifying the very assumption it’s built on by limiting the choice of the individual. By offering only material choices, spiritual options are ignored or compromised. The Bhagavad-gita asserts the right to serve but the ability to do what we like. Its not a very great claim as every child ignores service and does what it likes. But the Gita recognises that we don’t really grow up. It applies philosophy based on common sense and the realisation that we generally do what we like to do, irrespective of rights.

Hinduism has no real interest in our current obsession with human rights (excluding, as they do, the rights of other living beings). They are an excellent example of loosing all perspective, the spirit waning to the extent that form supersedes all. It’s not about human rights but about being a right human. The Hindu dharma, the concept of duty and service, helps individuals chose to qualify their freedom with principles and values. It exhorts us to control personal desire in order to please and benefit other living beings, the environment, natural law and the supreme - becoming right humans.

In the light of Krishna’s concept of the spiritual individual and especially the eternal nature of the self, the history of modernity and post-modernity is very young indeed. In the light of eternity a few hundred years is a blip.

So, what hope is there for Hinduism? Well, it looks good. The challenges of modernity don’t even seem to address the fundamental question of who we are. The question that this Hindu offers is, “what hope is there for modernity?”

  3. Some honest and inspiring words by His Holiness Partha Sarathi Goswami.

He says, it became unfortunately hard to find godbrothers these days with whom you can be honest and frank - well, what can be said, welcome at audarya-fellowship, Maharaja!

    Monday, 16 April 2007 - Hillcrest

Mid-afternoon: Woke up with a headache... it's been happening more

frequently lately. Last night I spoke with H.H. B.B. Govinda Maharaja at the

Sri Sri Radha Radhanatha Temple. I spoke truthfully to Maharaja... or as the

saying goes 'laying my cards on the table.' It's therapeutic for me to be

honest and frank. Unfortunately there aren't many godbrothers I can do this

with. The conversation turned towards bhajan and I spoke about some of my

practices. Usually when I meet devotees the subject is about preaching. I

think that was Srila Prabhupada's main concern as well. How many books? How

many new devotees? What's your idea to expand the preaching? Usually this is

how progress is measured. But equally relevant is "How's your bhajan?" What

are you reading? How many rounds are you chanting?

Earlier during the Sunday afternoon program Govinda Maharaja and H.H.

Indradyumna Maharaja both lead an ecstatic kirtan. It went on for ninety

minutes and many devotees were dancing including my sister Sue and her

ten-year-old daughter Jasmine. Chanting the holy name is our only business,

the lectures are just to convince us of the need to chant. When Sri Caitanya

Mahaprabhu travelled throughout South India His main emphasis was to chant

the holy name. It seems He didn't speak so much to the general public but He

spoke extensively to qualified devotees like Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya and

    Ramananda Raya.

I see the importance of having nice kirtans but unfortunately because of my

weak health I can't lead them. My dancing kirtan days are history.

    Thursday, 19 April 2007 - Hillcrest

It seems I have writer's block or perhaps I'm just becoming lazy. I'm not

writing so much. I don't feel I have anything important to write about.

Externally I lead a somewhat dull life... my main interest is my bhajan

which can't really be explained. Or rather it wouldn't be appropriate to

write about my bhajan. One thing that has been on my mind for a few days is

the passing away of my senior godbrother Suhotra Swami. He had a heart

attack in Mayapura while engaged in one of his marathons of studying the

Bhagavatam. Apparently he was also depressed. Somehow Krsna took him away

and now he's on a new chapter of his life. Seeing Maharaja's departure from

a mundane perspective fills you with doubt, fear and despondency. Seeing

Maharaja's departure from a spiritual point of view leaves you optimistic

and positive. While oscillating between the two perspectives I thought about

one of my favourite verses from the Srimad Bhagavatam.

    na hy asya karhicid rajan

    puman veda vidhitsitam

    yad vijijnasaya yukta

    muhyanti kavayo 'pi hi

    TRANSLATION

O King, no one can know the plan of the Lord [sri Krsna]. Even though great

philosophers inquire exhaustively, they are bewildered.

    PURPORT

The bewilderment of Maharaja Yudhisthira over his past sinful acts and the

resultant sufferings, etc., is completely negated by the great authority

Bhisma (one of the twelve authorized persons). Bhisma wanted to impress upon

Maharaja Yudhisthira that since time immemorial no one, including such

demigods as Siva and Brahma, could ascertain the real plan of the Lord. So

what can we understand about it? It is useless also to inquire about it.

Even the exhaustive philosophical inquiries of sages cannot ascertain the

plan of the Lord. The best policy is simply to abide by the orders of the

Lord without argument. The sufferings of the Pandavas were never due to

their past deeds. The Lord had to execute the plan of establishing the

kingdom of virtue, and therefore His own devotees suffered temporarily in

order to establish the conquest of virtue. Bhismadeva was certainly

satisfied by seeing the triumph of virtue, and he was glad to see King

Yudhisthira on the throne, although he himself fought against him. Even a

great fighter like Bhisma could not win the Battle of Kuruksetra because the

Lord wanted to show that vice cannot conquer virtue, regardless of who tries

to execute it. Bhismadeva was a great devotee of the Lord, but he chose to

fight against the Pandavas by the will of the Lord because the Lord wanted

to show that a fighter like Bhisma cannot win on the wrong side.

    (SB 1.9.16 Purport)

The word "muhyanti" means bewildered and that's the conclusion of trying to

understand death from the material perspective. Krsna, who is the supreme

friend of all living entities has His plan. I may not understand iti you may

not understand iti but Krsna knows what He's doing. Krsna is not a third

rate megalomaniac power freak who whimsically moves living entities from one

body to another. Krsna is our well-wisher, our friend, maintainer and

supreme guardian. His only concern is Suhotra Maharaja's spiritual well

being and happiness. Out of His infinite kindness and compassion He chose to

have Suhotra Maharaja leave his mortal body and take birth again. In his

next birth Maharaja will continue to serve Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission

until he comes to the level of bhava bhakti and then he'll take birth in the

Lord's pastimes somewhere in the material world. Technically that's called

"vastu-siddhi." It's essential that we see the "hand of God" behind

    everything otherwise we'll become bewildered.

Evening - I am studying Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto ten, Chapter 82, entitled

"Krishna and Balarama meet the residents of Vrndavana," in detail. It

describes the heart rendering meeting of the residents of Vrndavana with

    Krishna and Balarama at Kuruksetra.

The condition of separation that the gopis felt for Krsna at Kuruksetra is

beyond description. Some words can be written but to actually taste it a

devotee will have to do deep bhajan. And even with deep bhajan we will only

realise a millionth particle of what the gopis actually experienced. While

Krsna was meeting with the gopis He spoke this verse which I thought was

extremely appropriate, regarding the passing away of Suhotra Maharaja and so

many other Vaisnavas (in the last two weeks four of my disciples have left

their bodies). Krsna spoke this verse to the gopis.

Masden got some second hand information from a few sources, but he really only got the Bagh Bazaar Math's version of "history" which is kinda like getting Herman Goering's version of world history.:eek2:

Who was he? Was he a Nazi, right hand man to Hitler?

This is quite interesting you read Finn Madsen's article about the situation of the GM 1937 and come to the conclusion that Finn Madsen must be a Nazi like Hitler's right hand man Herman Goering? Please elaborate how you come to that conclusion?

  7.

These mistaken self centered choices or non-Krishna conscious dreams are characterized as being “fallen” from our position in the spiritual world but actually we are not fallen, we are simply in a dreaming consciousness that originates from our nitya-siddha body, those dreams are called the nitya-baddha or materially conditioned consciousness”

Could this mean that we are so to speak lying on a bed in the spiritual world sleeping and within that dream experiencing our stay in the material world? Although this stay is experienced as millions of years wandering through the different species of life it takes some 10 minutes of sleeping in the spiritual world? And when waking up we are cured of our envy against Krishna?

  8.

I want to make it clear to everybody that I do not necessarily endorse the contents of Finn Madsen's essay. I came across this article whilst going through the archives of the now defunct Gaudiya Discussions forum. My purpose in posting it here is to foster further (civilised and restrained) debate and discussion, so that all participants can get additional insights into these important past matters from one another's contributions. Towards that end, I can only appeal to you all to comment critically but properly, in a manner that is both academically and socially acceptable.

My own views on this topic are subject to change as my knowledge of it increases, and that is basically my approach to everything in life - never to let my ideas become fossilized and redundant. There is ALWAYS something novel to be learned, and to me, this is a universal principle, applicable at any stage, whether conditioned or liberated.

    Jaya Radhe

Thanks for posting this report about the Gaudiya-Vaishnavas chronically problem of efficiently working together - although Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaja made clear for everyone that a functioning GBC should endure a strong overall coherence of his global Sankirtan Movement.

This story will of course repeat itself whenever Krishna's plan differs from arrangements made by others.

The acharyas will be known by their own light and by their contribution to the spiritual happiness of this world; not by resolutions or cast votes, appointments or experiments.

Additionally, Krishna says in BG, that it is His greatest concern to personally check the 100% functioning of the parampara, and not that we have to tamper into Krishna's work.

What results in Vaishnava congregations to immediately fall appart.

Our work is to simply give the global Sankirtan Network a perfect frame of management to provide all the Vaishnavas the best supply of services a dynamic global organization can offer to its members to properly fullfill the most important welfare for human society - the spreading of chanting Hare Krishna.

Of course presently it looks just the opposite in global Vaishnavism: Just like in mundane politics only a very strong leader can manage to organize the different kind of obstinate people/camps in his state and as soon he leaves the whole state runs out of control into a state of anarchy/havoc.

To bring reason to bear and install a functioning GBC seems to be a foreign word in present Vaishnava dictionary - and the slogan of any materialistic society, "POWER RULES", as the only appilicable tool for organizing modern Vaishnavas to reach the goal of Lord Caitanya's vision:

prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama / sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama

“In every town and village of the world, the chanting of My name will be heard.” (Caitanya-bhagavata, Antya 4.126)

  9. Never heard of this - what's it all about, a devotee on the edge?

    http://www.sivaramaswami.com/?p=1229

Clint Eastwood moved from spaghetti westerns to spiritual treatises with this 1971 movie about a maverick San Francisco Krishna.

    DIRTY HARRY KRISHNA

“He’s a devotee on the edge… and he’s praying by his own rules.

    dirtyharrykrishna.gif

Shaven headed and sporting a huge .44 Magnum Tambourine, Eastwood created an enduring genre icon in ‘Dirty’ Harry Krishna – a devotee who has little regard for the rules but always gets results. In a defining early scene, he confronts an unbeliever whilst hanging around at an airport:

“Now I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking: ‘did he sing six verses or only five?’ Well, to tell you the truth, in all that worshipping I kinda lost track myself. But given that we are all spirits temporarily trapped in a material body, the question you gotta ask yourself is: do ya feel at one with the universe? Well, do ya… PUNK?”

Constantly butting heads with the chief of his temple, Harry gets a dressing down over his controversial techniques: “How did you know he was a Pagan?” “Look, when I see a naked man chasing a woman through a field with a sprig of sage and a robe on, I convert him.”

Harry finds ultimate enlightenment at the end of the movie and moves on to a higher plane of existence, but the character was reincarnated several times for a series of sequels.

Theist prabhu ... your post makes sense but we'll need to confirm that the hippies' mentality was indeed the reason Srila Prabhupada chose to introduce the formal process.

Another question is ... if one reads the books of 2 different Acaryas or hears their lectures (lets say Acaryas belonging to different Sampradayas), does he become the disciple of both the Acaryas, thereby being part of both Sampradayas at the same time?!

    More evidence:

Srila Prabhupada: When you read the Bible, you are following the spiritual master. How can you say "without a spiritual master"? As soon as you read the Bible, that means you are following the instruction of Lord Jesus Christ. That means you are following the spiritual master. So where is the opportunity of being without the spiritual master?

Disciple: I was referring to a living spiritual master.

Srila Prabhupada: There is no question of whether the spiritual master is "living". The spiritual master is eternal.

Now, your question was what to do "without the spiritual master." Without the spiritual master you cannot be, at any stage of your life. You may accept this spiritual master or that spiritual master. That is a different thing. But you have to accept.

When you say "reading the Bible," that means you are following the spiritual master, represented by some priest or some clergyman in the line of Lord Jesus Christ.

So in any case, you have to follow the spiritual master. There cannot be the question of "without the spiritual master." Is that clear?

Disciple: I mean, for instance, we couldn't understand the teachings of <CITE>Bhagavad-gita</CITE> without your help, Srila Prabhupada, without your representation.

Srila Prabhupada: Similarly, you have to understand the Bible with the help of Christ and the priest in the church.

Disciple: Yes, but is the priest receiving a good interpretation from his disciplic succession or his bishop? Because there seems to be some kind of discrepancy in the interpretation of the Bible. There are many different sects of Christianity that interpret the Bible in different ways.

Srila Prabhupada: Of course, there cannot be any interpretation of the Bible. Then the Bible itself has no authority. It is just like the old saying, "Call a spade a spade." Now, if someone calls it something else, that is another thing. He's not a spiritual master.

For instance, this is a watch. Everybody has called it a watch. But if I called it a spectacle, then what is the value of my being a so-called spiritual master? I'm misleading. [laughter] "It is a watch." That I must say.

So when someone makes some misrepresentation, he's not a bona fide spiritual master. Reject such a spiritual master immediately.

That intelligence you must have: Who is a pseudo spiritual master and who is a real spiritual master? Otherwise you'll be cheated. And that is being done. Everyone is interpreting in his own way.

The <CITE>Bhagavad-gita</CITE>... there are thousands of editions, and all of them have tried to interpret in their own way. All nonsense. They should all be thrown away. Simply you have to read <CITE>Bhagavad-gita</CITE> as it is. Then you'll understand.

There is no question of interpretation. Then the authority is gone. As soon as you interpret, there is no authority. Take a law book. Do you mean to say that in court, if you say before the judge, "My dear lord, I interpret this passage in this way," it will be accepted? The judge will at once say, "Who are you to interpret? You have no right." After all, thne what would be the authority of the law book if everyone came and said, "I interpret in this way"?

When is interpretation required? When a thing is not understood. If I say "This is a watch" and everyone understands that "This is a watch, yes," then where is the opportunity of interpreting that "This is a spectacle"?

So unnecessary interpretation is not required, and that is not bona fide. And those who are interpreting unnecessarily—they should be rejected immediately. Immediately, without any consideration.

This exchange between His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and some of his disciples took place in Seattle, Washington, on October 10, 1968.

  11.

    Anybody know?

Best to get the answer from someone who must know!

An ISKCON guru in good standing, HH Devamrita Swami. He says at his website, "Sympathy for your spiritual master is what is needed":

    http://www.devaswami.com/index.php?q=node/129

    Sympathy for your spiritual master

    by His Holiness Devamrita Swami

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td bgcolor="#ffffcc" valign="top"> Listening to Prabhupada’s bhajans, I watched the synthetic drugs drip into my vein through a tube in my arm. During this two-hour daily intravenous treatment [photos], I reflected upon the austerity of accepting disciples and its weighty effects. The facts: Srila Prabhupada rescued me from the disaster of Kali-yuga. Let the whole world know that I’m simply made of his mercy. Longing to reciprocate, I’m pushing on to make his mission and Goloka my home. As a humble service to our disciplic succession and ISKCON society, I’ve taken responsibility for others, that they also may journey to life’s ultimate goal. In other words, I’ve got to have the spiritual dynamics to forge ahead not only for myself, but also for the entire ISKCON society I’m serving, and, of course, for my spiritual dependents as well. Make no mistake about it: initiating devotees is not like ambling in a forest, savoring the fresh air, and gazing at the blue sky. In case you’ve forgotten, let me remind you that your spiritual preceptor doesn’t bask in flowers, obeisances, and praise—he gets hit with some other things too. The disciples, though often unconsciously, hurl stones like negligence, impersonalism, ingratitude, and offenses. Even worse, your guru gets a dose of your sinful reactions. As recorded in a Fourth Canto purport: “Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore stated that the spiritual master who plays the part of Krsna's representative has to consume all the sinful reactions of his disciple. Sometimes a spiritual master takes the risk of being overwhelmed by the sinful reactions of the disciples and undergoes a sort of tribulation due to their acceptance.” (S. bhag. 4.21.31) Yes, ladies and gentlemen, let me remind you that accepting disciples is not a piece of cake. There are real occupational hazards, as Srila Prabhupada explains throughout his lectures and books. For example: “Krsna is so powerful that He can immediately take up all the sins of others and immediately make them right. But when a living entity plays the part on behalf of Krsna, he also takes the responsibility for the sinful activities of his devotees. Therefore to become a guru is not an easy task. You see? He has to take all the poisons and absorb them. So sometimes-because he is not Krsna-sometimes there is some trouble. " (Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers, chapter 6) “Sometimes the spiritual master, after accepting a disciple, must take charge of that disciple's past sinful activities and, being overloaded, must sometimes suffer-if not fully, then partially-for the sinful acts of the disciple.” (S. bhag. 9.9.5 purport) What’s more, troubles can attack not only the guru’s physical body but also his subtle body. Just like physical pain, nightmarish dreams are a disturbance that your spiritual master must tolerate. ISKCON’s founder-acarya describes this austerity: “A devotee sometimes accepts a sinful person as his disciple, and to counteract the sinful reactions he accepts from the disciple, he has to see a bad dream. Nonetheless, the spiritual master is so kind that in spite of having bad dreams due to the sinful disciple, he accepts this troublesome business for the deliverance of the victims of Kali-yuga.” (S. bhag. 8.4.15 purport) Why would anyone want to volunteer for such peril? Why not just mind your own business, look to your own spiritual progress, and in this way deftly trek back to Godhead--unburdened by others’ hang-ups and woes? After all, doesn’t the scripture warn about accepting many disciples? Indeed, who’d want to undergo the reactions from just one—what to speak of hundreds or thousands? "Don't make many disciples," Srila Prabhupada intoned. Then he presented the other side of the initiation paradox: “But we do it because we are preaching. Never mind--let us suffer. Still we shall accept them.” (PQPA 6) In Caitanya caritamrita, he explains: “According to Srila Jiva Gosvami, a preacher has to accept many disciples to expand the cult of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.” “Accepting an unlimited number of devotees or disciples is very risky for one who is not a preacher. This is risky because when a spiritual master accepts a disciple, he naturally accepts the disciple's sinful activities and their reactions. Unless he is very powerful, he cannot assimilate all the sinful reactions of his disciples. Thus if he is not powerful, he has to suffer the consequences, for one is forbidden to accept many disciples.” (Madhya 22.118) What saves the guru is preaching. Both his preaching and that of his disciples. Otherwise, without our constant striving to expand Mahaprabhu’s sankirtan movement, why accept disciples—just for flickering, imaginary fame, comfort, and prestige? The shastra warns initiators that unless they and their followers actively preach, reactions from disciples can become a tsunami. “But for preaching work we have to accept many disciples--for expanding preaching--even if we suffer. That's a fact. The spiritual master has to take the responsibility for all the sinful activities of his disciples. Therefore to make many disciples is a risky job unless one is able to assimilate all the sins . . . .” (PQPA6) The power to assimilate the sinful reactions derives from diligent, selfless dedication to Lord Caitanya’s global mission—pure devotional service as a servant of the servant. Accepting the missionary order of his own guru as his life and soul, the guru resolves the initiation paradox. “The poor spiritual master is kind and merciful enough to accept a disciple and partially suffer for that disciple's sinful activities, but Krishna, being merciful to His servant, neutralizes the reactions of sinful deeds for the servant who engages in preaching His glories. Even mother Ganges feared the sinful reactions of the people in general and was anxious about how she would counteract the burden of these sins.” (S. bhag. 9.9.5) Our saving Grace is when, as gurus and disciples, we all preach and distribute the name, fame, qualities and pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Then Krishna will rescue us all—guru and disciple alike. “After initiation, therefore, a disciple should be extremely careful not to commit again any sinful act that might cause difficulties for himself and the spiritual master. Before the Deity, before the fire, before the spiritual master and before the Vaisnavas, the honest disciple promises to refrain from all sinful activity. Therefore he must not again commit sinful acts and thus create a troublesome situation.” (S. bhag. 8.4.15 purport) Declare it boldly to the world: An honest disciple is no ordinary person. Such meritorious souls, who cherish their initiation vows, are the actual active ingredients that push forward the entire Krishna consciousness movement. Year after year, decade after decade, such men and women of character and integrity hold tight to their promise—and see the result. “We should be very much cautious: ‘For my sinful actions my spiritual master will suffer, so I'll not commit even a pinch of sinful activities.’ That is the duty of the disciple. After initiation, all sinful reaction is finished. Now if he again commits sinful activities, his spiritual master has to suffer. A disciple should be sympathetic and consider this: ‘For my sinful activities, my spiritual master will suffer’." (PQPA 6)

  13. Interesting points about the appearance of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Devotee, Jun 5, 2007 7:52 PM: "In a previous Sanga you wrote, "Being defeated by Her love, He (Krsna) tried to steal it in a last ditch effort. This got Him into more trouble in His appearance as Sri Caitanya, who spent the better part of His antya-lila in tears and madness. Only by the mercy of Radha's intimate associates Lalita and Visakha in the forms of Svarupa Damodara and Ramananda Raya was He able to resolve the issue, one that is nonetheless eternal and one that presents a golden opportunity of

    service for us."

I am wondering what opportunity of service this offers the contemporary devotee? It seems like the situation was handled, at the time. What more can I do to serve Krsna in this regard?"

[see Sanga: Krsna Has a Problem

    http://www.swami.org/sanga<wbr>/archives/pages/volume_eight<wbr>/v08n05.html]

    4qgao0g.jpg

Krsna realized that the gopis' position as the asraya alambana afforded them more ecstasy than His position as the visaya alambana did. Thus He tried to take the position of the asraya alambana by becoming a devotee of Himself as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, at which time his dark complexion became effulgent like molten gold and He became known as Gauranga (the Golden Lord). When Krsna appeared as Gauranga He eventually studied under the tutelage of Svarupa Damodara and Raya Ramananda, devotees who were Sri Radhika's most confidential associates. Only with their help and blessing did He succeed in His quest.

Thus the problem was solved. What then is the golden opportunity? The golden opportunity is Gaurahari, the golden Lord Himself. Were it not for His appearance how would anyone know about all of these things? How would it be possible to taste such love? Sri Rupa Goswami writes, anarpita carim cirat karunayavatirna kalau: "Gauranga came to give what has never been given before." What did He give? He gave us the opportunity to experience Radha's love for Krsna, unnatojjvala rasa sva bhakti sriyam. He gave us the golden opportunity to experience that which He Himself could not taste without the blessing of Sri Radha. In other words, in the course of pursuing that experience He showed the world how to taste it, how to become a dearmost devotee of Krsna by serving the handmaids of Sri Radhika. Thus He not only tasted but taught as well. Careful study of his pastimes and precepts reveal that the sadhana that Gaurahari taught the world culminates in the highest love.

    Srila Sanatana Goswami writes:

"Realizing that the ecstasy of His beloved devotees is even sweeter than His own, out of greed the Lord descended to this world in the form of His own devotee. Dressed as a renunciant, golden in effulgence, He bears the name Sri Krsna Caitanya. All glories to that Lord Hari, who has appeared as the son of mother Saci!"

Commenting on this verse of Brhad-Bhagavatamrta, Sri Sanatana writes that it is only by the mercy of Sri Caitanya that one can experience gopi-bhava like that of Radha's dearmost handmaidens. There is no other way. This is the gift of Gaura to the world!

    Srila Rupa Goswami writes:

"His name is Sri Krsna Caitanya; His quality is that He is most magnanimous; His lila is giving Krsna-prema; His form is effulgent like molten gold. Praise unto Him, Sri Krsna, again and again!"

Srila Prabodhananda Saraswati shares this secret with us:

"If you are truly pious, then to the extent that you develop devotion to Gauranga's lotus feet, the moon rays of Radharani's lotus feet will well up suddenly in your heart."

You ask what all of this means to us today. It means that we should try our utmost to take advantage of the golden opportunity Gaura has given by learning the secrets of scripture from a realized soul, and under His or Her guidance we should serve Sri Krsna Caitanya with all our hearts in the kirtana of harinama. We should know our goal, the sadhya, for this will help to inform our sadhana. As our hearts become cleansed

through guru-guided sadhana, gradually all of these things will be realized within. This is what chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra is all about. It is about attaining the service of Radha-Krsna in Vrndavana.

Sounds like someone is jealous of people living in Florida or California....

If these are not great then what about the cravings for heavenly abode?

Indraloka is fantasy and USA is reality...enjoy this if you got this and dont be jealous if you dont have it,work for it and you might get it,not sitting on your butt and chanting mantra, nothing happens that way...

Dear guest thanks for surfing through here, your question is perfectly answered by NAVA JAUVANA PRABHU who writes:

    Garlands of Reality

    BY: NAVA JAUVANA DASA

    Jun 5, INDIA (SUN) —

    <center>
    "hara boliya, galaya parili

    shamana kinkara sapa....'
    </center>
'Death is like a snake, it can come at anytime. But thinking it to be a flower garland, you wear it around your neck.'

These are the biting words of Locan Das Thakur, the great 16th century vaisnava poet, from his song: Avatara Sara. The Thakur cries out to us: 'why are you so attracted to the garlands of karma and jnana that you're wearing? They are actually snakes around your neck, not garlands, and they can kill you at any moment! But you proudly wear them. Brothers, why can't you give up this illusion and just worship the essence of all avatars, Sri Gauranga?'

Money, friends, social prestige, approval, control over others, fame. We're busy in this world desiring these garlands, acquiring them at any cost, and then proudly wearing them! But these garlands are only external decorations for the soul. None of them give us real beauty, real charm, real life. They actually bring us closer to death. Short of prema bhakti, all the opulence we acquire here, gross and subtle, are simply garlands of repeated birth and death.

In our early days in Krishna consciousness we used to demonize the 'karmis' for their materialistic careers, bank balances and family ties. That was immature on our part. But now we see that some of the sannyasis and gurus who used to criticize the karmis for their attachments, now own $100,000 cars, live in large villas, trade stocks, go to universities to get PhDs, or write novels about sex life, while continuing to accept the worship of their disciples and to remain silent about the mistakes they made as leaders of Iskcon, which caused so much suffering to so many devotees. Are these the activities of liberated souls, or are these men living in illusion, wearing some of maya's most subtle, dangerous garlands? It is not our business to judge others, lest we be judged. But neither should we be blind or mix too closely with those who compromise.

The path of spiritual life is not a wide highway of mixed interests and selfish intentions. The path to freedom starts as a narrow lane of inner focus. If we want reality, we need to turn off the public freeway of popular votes and acceptance. We must not follow the common flow of social life, but take the side road of sacrifice and truth telling. The previous acaryas give us the wisdom, mercy and courage to follow them on this road that leads to freedom. We have only ourselves to blame if we get misled.

Pure devotees who worship the Lord wholeheartedly, without interruption or material ambition, know the road to freedom. They are truly liberated and spontaneous because they know, without any doubt, that it is Braj Kishore who wears the vaijayanti garland of five colors. They know that the source of beauty and energy and life is not their egos, but Krishna. 'Vasudevah sarvam iti: one who realizes that everything is dependent on me, Vasudeva, surrenders to me. Such a great soul is extremely rare.' (Bhagavad-gita 7.19)

A great soul is very rare. We cannot imitate his activities by some show. We came to this material world because we wanted to imitate God. To get out of this world we need to follow a rare devotee, not imitate one. It's a practice and it's not easy. It requires all the humility and perseverance of a baby learning to walk. We have fallen countless times and will continue to fall for sure. Our friends or family members will fall or fail us. Some of our closest friends may appear to leave the scene completely. Others may disappoint us by putting on false garlands and abusing us or making a show of the practice. But we should not become discouraged. We should never stop picking ourselves up, despite our own obvious weaknesses. Never giving up, and never giving in to the temptation to imitate.

Then, one day, by the mercy of a pure devotee, either in this life or in another, we will actually start walking. We'll be naked of illusion and free from the garlands of death hanging around our necks. Our attachment to this false world will be gone and we'll cry and dance in ecstasy, worshipping the essence of all avatars, Sri Gaurasundar, to our heart's content.

Maybe so, but then again trying to take Gaudiya Vaishnavism global to all the mleccha and yavana people of the world was also no small effort beyond the 500 years of Gaudiya Vaishnavism being a small sect in India.

    "major change"

Sure, maybe there needs to be a "major change" when you take the Gaudiya mission out of India to the far away lands of western cultures?

I think the idea that the Gaudiya mission has to remain untouched and unchanged even when taken global is a pipe-dream for fools.

"I think"...This is rather the business of fools to value the spreading of the Holy Names with their material minds - the Sankirtan movement spreads unchecked of any material consideration and reaches the hearts of conditioned souls without your tricks. Someone has to adjust the transcendental sound of Hare Krishna so that people minds can accept? This is pretty much the consideration of a material brain and not a Vaishnava who's speaking.:deal:

When the five members of the Panca-tattva saw the entire world drowned in love of Godhead and the seed of material enjoyment in the living entities completely destroyed, they all became exceedingly happy.

    PURPORT

In this connection, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura writes in his Anubhasya that since the living entities all belong to the marginal potency of the Lord, each and every living entity has a natural tendency to become Krsna conscious, although at the same time the seed of material enjoyment is undoubtedly within him. The seed of material enjoyment, watered by the course of material nature, fructifies to become a tree of material entanglement that endows the living entity with all kinds of material enjoyment. To enjoy such material facilities is to be afflicted with the three material miseries. However, when by nature’s law there is a flood, the seeds within the earth become inactive. Similarly, as the inundation of love of Godhead spreads all over the world, the seeds of material enjoyment become impotent. Thus the more the Krsna consciousness movement spreads, the more the desire for material enjoyment decreases. The seed of material enjoyment automatically becomes impotent with the increase of the Krsna consciousness movement.

Instead of being envious that Krsna consciousness is spreading all over the world by the grace of Lord Caitanya, those who are jealous should be happy, as indicated here by the words parama ullasa. But because they are kanistha-adhikaris or prakrta-bhaktas (materialistic devotees who are not advanced in spiritual knowledge), they are envious instead of happy, and they try to find faults in the Krsna consciousness movement. Yet Srimat Prabodhananda Sarasvati writes in his Caitanya-candramrta that when influenced by Lord Caitanya’s Krsna consciousness movement, materialists become averse to talking about their wives and children, supposedly learned scholars give up their tedious studies of Vedic literature, yogis give up their impractical practices of mystic yoga, ascetics give up their austere activities of penance and austerity, and sannyasis give up their study of Sankhya philosophy. Thus they are all attracted by the bhakti-yoga practices of Lord Caitanya and cannot relish a mellow taste superior to that of Krsna consciousness.

Our pujari department in Mayapur seems to be fully competent for this task.

Well Payonidhi prabhu, the pujari department at Krishna Balaram Mandir is run by the Gaudiya-matha, in Mayapur similiar trend is to be found. As Srila Prabhupada says, in SB, human society is getting closer, welcome in the New World Order:

We must know the present need of human society. And what is that need? Human society is no longer bounded by geographical limits to particular countries or communities. Human society is broader than in the Middle Ages, and the world tendency is toward one state or one human society.
  17. Priyanka Chopra: Second most successful Miss India – Miss World in Bollywood

Her paycheck has climbed from Rs 75 Lakhs to Rs 1.5 crores in just one year. She has recently signed a three-film contract worth Rs.4 to 5 crores, with UTV. Is Priyanka set to dislodge Aishwarya Rai as the most successful Miss India – Miss World.

    By Vimla Patil

5 June 2007 (Sawf News) - Priyanka Chopra is the second most successful Miss India-Miss World in Bollywood

Just as the news comes that Priyanka Chopra has signed a three-film contract worth Rs.4 to 5 crores, with UTV, it seems a good opportunity to look back with pride at all the Miss India, Miss World, Miss Universe and Miss Asia title winners and their careers in Bollywood.

The earliest beauty queen to make a superb mark in Bollywood was Zeenat Aman who won the title of Miss Asia in 1971.

Zeenat, fresh as a dewdrop, came back with the crown to India and was immediately snapped up by the debonair Dev Anand for his epoch making film Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

With the success of the film, Zeenat went from one high to the next till she retired after marriage to Mazhar Khan and motherhood.

The next to make a huge mark in Bollywood was Tina Munim, winner of the Teen Princess title. She too was made a star by Dev Anand, who introduced her in his film Des Pardes. Tina went on to make several successful films before marrying industrialist Anil Ambani.

Next was Juhi Chawla, Miss India 1984, who started her career with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak with Aamir Khan and achieved a hit with the very first film. She too became a top star of the big screen over the years doing commercial and art house films and winning kudos for both.

An extremely talented singer and respected star, she took a sabbatical when she married millionaire Jai Mehta and had two children. She takes assignments now and then and continues to win praise for her acting prowess. She will soon be seen in Swami, a simple story directed by choreographer Ganesh Acharya.

In 1994, Aishwarya Rai won the Miss World title while her colleague Sushmita Sen won the Miss Universe title.

Ash began her journey to stardom soon and so did Sush. But over the years, Sush was left behind, doing some films and endorsements, while Ash marched on to get international recognition as 'the most beautiful woman in the world' and made scores of films with the leading production houses of Bollywood.

And then came Priyanka Chopra, yet another Miss World, who built a fabulous film career within five years of her arrival in Bollywood.

Priyanka has been the heroine of several hit movies including the recent Krrish with Hrithik Roshan. Her co-stars have included Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and perhaps all the top heroes of Bollywood.

With her bagging a three-movie contract with UTV, she has become the second most successful beauty queen in Bollywood after Aishwarya Rai. She has more recently signed one more movie Love Story 2050 which is the launch vehicle for her reported boyfriend Harman Baweja, after Kareena Kapoor opted out of the movie.

Lara Dutta (Miss Universe 2000), who features in the forthcoming movie Jhoom Barabar Jhoom from Yashraj Films, is yet another moderately successful beauty queen. Then of course, there is the sexy Bipasha Basu (Ford Supermodel of the World 1996), celebrated beauty queen who has made her mark in many movies and is surely among the top five female stars of Bollywood currently.

Other beauty queens who tried their luck in Bollywood were Sangeeta Bijlani (Miss India 1980), Swaroop Sampat (Miss India 1979), Naveeda Mehdi (Miss India World 1990), Dolly Minhas(Miss India Universe 1988) and others. Younger beauty queens who continue to work in films are Celina Jaitley (Miss India Universe 2001), Dia Mirza (Miss India Asia Pacific 2000), Tanushree Dutta (Miss India Universe 2004) and Yukta Mookhey (Miss India World 1999)

  18. As kali-yuga proceeds we find more and more materialistic stumbling blocks on our spiritual path and as Prabhupada points out (at that time like Arjuna playing the role of a conditioned soul before his spiritual master), he presented to his spiritual master Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaja the tragedy that India is under foreign rule, subjugated, mortified and people are badly suffering due to this and the very first thing would be to overcome this deadly stranglehold caused by the British East India Company ("Road to a complete monopoly") whose goal was like a merciless vampire to exploit India's economy like some malicious parasite.

And only then when this is accomplished, Prabhupada argued, to start global preaching in full swing.

    Appearance Day, Lecture

by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda

    Atlanta, March 2, 1975

"I was taken to Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Thākura by one of my friends. I did not want to go there, but he forcibly took me there. Yes. And he ordered me that “You preach the cult of Caitanya Mahāprabhu in English language. This is very much essential.” So on the first meeting he told me like that. That was my first meeting with him. So at that time I was in favor of Gandhi’s movement. So I said that “We are not independent—subjugated. Who will hear about our message?” So Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Thākura refuted my argument. I was very much pleased. I had so many talks.

But I was very much pleased to be defeated, that “This so-called nationalism or any ism, they are all temporary. Real need is the self-realization.”

  19. Since it became a widespread fashion for so many western Vaishnavas to consider it as advancement of spiritual live to have your own house in sunny Florida/California/Hawaii, etc. - the example of Srila Bilvamangala Thakura as narrated by Srila Prabhupada to Allen Ginsberg illustrates how slightest material attachment of a devotee easily leads to further complicated chain reaction of material entanglement.

Although in previous live already elevated to the stage of bhava, "but someway or other couldnt finish", Srila Bilvamangala Thakura (14th century A.D.) was born again in a nice and rich brahmana family.

    67y8tpe.jpg

Prabhupāda: Bilvamangala Thākura, in his previous life, he elevated himself to the loving stage of Krsna. Not exactly, just previous, bhāva. It is called bhāva, ecstasy. But some way or other, he could not finish, so according to the instruction of Bhagavad-gītā, he was given birth to a nice brāhmana family. So very rich. Śucīnām śrīmatām gehe, in that way. Rich family, at the same time, brāhmana family. But richness, generally, sometimes glide down to wine, women, and intoxication. So by bad company he became woman-hunter, prostitute-hunter. So he was too much addicted to one woman, Cintāmani. So his father died, and he was… He did not marry. In your country it is called girlfriend, and in our country it is called prostitute. So he was that about that prostitute, Cintāmani. So he was performing the rituals, but he was thinking of his girlfriend, that Cintāmani, “When I shall go there?” Bilvamangala Thākura? Yes. So he asked his servants, “Give me some food. I shall go to Cintāmai.”

So anyway, he performed… Did not perform. His mind was there. He took some nice foodstuff, and when he went, there was a big river, and it was raining heavily, and the river was flooded. So he thought,“How shall I go the other side?” So one dead body was floating. So he thought, “It is a log,” and he took the help of the log and went the other side. And it was heavy raining. And then, when he reached that Cintāmani’s home, he saw the door is locked already. Blocked. So he jumped over the wall, taking the tail of a serpent, and when he reached inside, he knocked the door, and Cintāmani was astonished.

“How did you come? So heavy rain. You had to cross the river.” He said everything, that “Oh, I cannot stay without you.” So she was much inquisitive: “How did you come? How did you jump over this wall?” And so he showed everything, that there was a big snake, and so he thought it as rope and jumped it. And then, when he went to the riverside, he saw that was a dead body. So at that time Cintāmaṇi thought, “Oh, this man is so much addicted to me.” So she told, “Oh, this much attraction if you would have with Krsna, oh, how nice your life would have been.” So immediately he came to his senses because he was lifted to that position in his previous life. So immediately he left and was going alone to Vrndāvana. And on the way he saw another beautiful woman. So his business was to be attracted by woman. So he again became attracted. So he was following. So this woman, after entering, she told her husband, “Just see, this man is following from a distant place.” So he asked him, “Oh, come on.” He saw he is nice gentleman. He was a rich man, brāhmana. “What is this?” He said plainly, “Oh, I have been attracted by your wife, by the beauty of your wife.” “All right, come on. What is that?” You enjoy my wife. You are brāhmana. You are…” So he was received well. And at night, when he was given place, then he asked that woman, “Mother, will you give me your hair pin?” He took the hair pin and pushed in the eyes: “Oh, these eyes are my enemy.”

Since then he became blind. And in that blindness he was worshiping Krsna, and Krsna was coming to him. And he would not touch. He’ll sing, dance, and He’ll supply milk and go away. So this Bilvamangala Thākura wrote one book, Krsna-karnāmrta. It is very valuable book. That is very highly estimated by Lord Caitanya.

  20.

It's not my job, but it's my hobby.

I don't get paid to do it.

    I do it for fun.:P

So, Mr.Guruvani, you're after fun and hobby, what about the fun and hobby to teach others to chant Hare Krishna, or to find out frustrated people in Florida who want to change their farm into a Krishna centered household? Oh, this is not so much fun, they're all demons? Using the world-wide internet to push Krishna aside from His serving the devotees by keeping His own personal parampara system genuine, clean and free from cheaters is more fun? Let's see if Krishna considers this as so funny or not. At least I couldnt yet find any sloka in BG where Krishna tells His devotees, "My dear devotees, whenever there are rascal leaders in your temple, please fight against them forever because I'm too afraid, helpless and foolish to accomplish this too difficult task."

Instead when reading about Prahlad Maharaja's terrible situation, Krishna perfectly solved the problem very quickly with lasting effect.

But may be according Guruvani prabhu this happened in another time where Krishna was much more inclined towards His devotees and now this is all over and Krishna does nothing anymore to help His devotees because it is kali-yuga and we have to do it all ourselves, teaching the world that there're false gurus and fighting 24h daily against people who were never appointed by Prabhupada.

At least Prabhupada didnt consider it as funny to endlessly expose the non-preaching GM leaders sitting in their temples and honouring prasadam while Prabhupada preached in NY, but instead had fun and opened one temple after the other because he allowed Krishna to help him.....And because Krishna was fully involved it had many side effects too: the GM also started to preach globally. Why not try this kind of fun/hobby?
