  7. According to the 2006 Hindu-CNN-IBN State of the Nation Survey, 31% of Indians are vegetarians, while another 9% consumes eggs. Among the various communities, vegetarianism was most common among Jains, Brahmins at 55%, and less frequent among Muslims (3%) and residents of coastal states respectively. Other surveys cited by FAO [2], and USDA [3][4] estimate 20%-42% of the Indian population as being vegetarian. These surveys indicate that even Indians who do eat meat, do so infrequently, with less than 30% consuming it regularly; although the reasons are partially economical.

  13. <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=judulpost>Varakh </TD></TR><TR><TD class=isipost> The silver foil on those yummy sweets is called 'Varakh' in local Indian dialect. It is used as decoration on many Indian sweets, paan and even Chyavanprash. Most vegetarians probably eat varakh without the knowledge of its source. Well, it so turns out that 'Beauty without Cruelty' had published an article regarding preparation of varakh, which caused an outroar. It is known that Indian Airlines stopped serving sweets with varakh on them years ago. So how is it claimed to be made? Intestines of the ox and cattle that are butchered in the slaughter-house are sold (by weight) to people making varakh. The intestines are then cleaned for blood and mucous (although its not clear how clean they are) before they are cut into rectangular pieces of about 9x10 inches. About 60 pieces can be obtained from a single intestine. These are arranged one above the other to form leafs of a book. Strips of metallic silver are kept between them and the whole thing packed in a bag, which is then beaten till it flattens out. The flattened silver foil is extracted and sold to mithai-wallas. Intestines are not used for consumption and thats why they are sold to varakh-manufacturers for a nominal amount. The advantage in using them is that they are elastic so they dont break upon hammering. According to this analysis, a single ox-gut yields about 16000 foils, earning about Rs. 20K, and decorating about 4000 kgs of sweets. According to this article, there was a lawsuit in California regarding presence of silver in cakes. Apparently, Enivronmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ruled that presence of silver even in miniscule amounts is toxic and its bio-accumulative - once enters the human body but stays for life. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did not ban indian sweets with silver foil after the lawsuit althought cakes were banned, but several 'alerts' issued by FDA later on, specifically pointed to few imported silver-foiled Indian sweets as 'not permitted' but not all such sweets. A recent study by ITRC in Lucknow, India confirmed this. But Indian sweet manufacturers and people continue to relish it. Regardless of whether varakh is vegetarian or contains traces of animal blood, the silver in itself is not good for our body. I dont know how true is this process for making varakh. Many websites, especially relating to Jain/Hare-Krishna/Swaminarayan however claim its veracity. I happened to chance upon them when I googled Varakh. A friend of mine kept asking me whats the 'silver thing' on sweets that he was offered by some Indians. I said its nothing, its edible, I have been eating since childhood. Since he persisted in knowing, I googled it for him and since then, my life is a little miserable. Is yours? </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

  17. Legend surrounding the temple originThe traditional story concerning the origins of the temple is that the original image of Jagannath (a deity form of Krishna) was found near a fig tree in the form of an Indranila or the Blue Jewel. It was so dazzling that Dharma wanted to hide it in the earth. King Indradyumna of Malwa wanted to find the image and to do so he performed harsh penances to obtain his goal. Vishnu then instructed him to go to the Puri seashore and find a floating log to make an image from its trunk. The King found the log of wood. Vishnu and Vishwakarma appeared in the form of artistes and prepared images of Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra from the tree.[9].

TRANSLATION The external potency Maya who is of the nature of the shadow of the cit potency, is worshiped by all people as Durga, the creating, preserving and destroying agency of this mundane world. I adore the primeval Lord Govinda in accordance with whose will Durga conducts herself. PURPORT</CENTER> (The aforesaid presiding deity of Devi-dhama is being described.) The world, in which Brahma takes his stand and hymns the Lord of Goloka, is Devi-dhama consisting of the fourteen worlds and Durga is its presiding deity. She is ten-armed, representing the tenfold fruitive activities. She rides on the lion, representing her heroic prowess. She tramples down Mahisasura, representing the subduer of vices. She is the mother of two sons, Karttikeya and Ganesa, representing beauty and success. She is placed between Laksmi and Sarasvati, representing mundane opulence and mundane knowledge. She is armed with the twenty weapons, representing the various pious activities enjoined by the Vedas for suppression of vices. She holds the snake, representing the beauty of destructive time. Such is Durga possessing all these manifold forms. Durga is possessed of durga, which means a prison house. When jivas begotten of the marginal potency (tatastha sakti) forget the service of Krsna they are confined in the mundane prison house, the citadel of Durga. The wheel of karma is the instrument of punishment at this place. The work of purifying these penalized jivas is the duty devolved upon Durga. She is incessantly engaged in discharging the same by the will of Govinda. When, luckily. the forgetfulness of Govinda on the part of imprisoned jivas is remarked by them by coming in contact with self-realized souls and their natural aptitude for the loving service of Krsna is aroused, Durga herself then becomes the agency of their deliverance by the will of Govinda. So it behooves everybody to obtain the guileless grace of Durga, the mistress of this prison house, by propitiating her with the selfless service of Krsna. The boons received from Durga in the shape of wealth, property, recovery from illness, of wife and sons, should be realized as the deluding kindness of Durga. The mundane psychical jubilations of dasa-maha-vidya, the ten goddesses or forms of Durga, are elaborated for the delusion of the fettered souls of this world. Jiva is a spiritual atomic part of Krsna. When he forgets his service of Krsna he is at once deflected by the attracting power of Maya in this world, who throws him into the whirlpool of mundane fruitive activity (karma) by confining him in a gross body constituted by the five material elements, their five attributes and eleven senses, resembling the garb of a prisoner. In this whirlpool jiva has experience of happiness and miseries, heaven and hell. Besides this, there is a subtle body. consisting of the mind, intelligence and ego, inside the gross body. By means of the subtle body. the jiva forsakes one gross body and takes recourse to another. The jiva cannot get rid of the subtle body. full of nescience and evil desires, unless and until he is liberated. On getting rid of the subtle body he bathes in the Viraja and goes up to Hari-dhama. Such are the duties performed by Durga in accordance with the will of Govinda. In the Bhagavata sloka, vilajyamanaya... durdhiyah--the relationship between Durga and the conditioned souls has been described. Durga, worshiped by the people of this mundane world, is the Durga described above. But the spiritual Durga, mentioned in the mantra which is the outer covering of the spiritual realm of the Supreme Lord, is the eternal maidservant of Krsna and is, therefore, the transcendental reality whose shadow, the Durga of this world, functions in this mundane world as her maidservant.

  22. heres a story Parikshit is the son of Abhimanyu and Uttara the daughter of Virata and the only successor to the Pandavas. Ashwatthama, the chiranjeevi, unusual to his brahminical nature, kills all the ten sons of Draupadi, after the Kurukshetra War. Unlike Arjuna, who is always guided by the Askalitha Brahmachari, Lord Krishna, Aswathama, is unable to retrieve the Brahmastra and consequently it enters the womb of Uttara to kill the yet to be born Parikshit. But Parikshit is such a great Baktha of the Lord Almighty and an upholder of Dharma the unstoppable Brahmastra is suppressed by the Lord and instead of killing the infant in the womb, it stuns him. In due course Uttara delivers a still born child and there is consternation and chaos in the Pandava Camp. All the ladies cry and approach Lord Krishna and entreat him to do something to save the last heir to the Pandava Dynasty. All the sages are wondering as to how Lord Krishna is going to revive a still born child. Then, this Nitya Brahmachari proclaims loud and clear: "If there is a Brahmachari amongst all of you who has no carnal desires let him touch the baby and the infant will come alive." All the males including the rishis cannot even imagine that they are worthy of such a self-test and remain aloof and refrain from touching the infant. Ultimately Lord Krishna with a naughty smile playing on his lips says "Since no Nitya Brahmachari has come forward to revive the baby I, who is accused of having 16,000 gopis as my concubines will touch the infant with my hands and try to revive him." So saying he touched the infant and Parikshit comes to life! In spite of the fact that he is accused of having Raas Leela with 16,000 Gopis, he has never lost his Brahmacharya. This story is a proof that he never lost his Purity even for a fraction of a second in HIS life. It is mere futility on the part of ordinary mortals to evaluate the life of a Jivan Mukta by observing only HIS external appearances. In fact it is a great mistake and an irreverent act. - Bagawan Sri Ramana from his Stories from Bagawan. Rajaputhran. Parikshit - A Story from Mahabharatha.
