    Hello Sandhuji,

I am a capricorn born ascendant, jupiter and saturn are in my 9th house.

my date of birth 24/11/1980 10:11 am, bangalore

I have lot of health issues.

Could you please throw light on this issue.

    Thanks a lot

  2. Dear,

ASpect of jupiter is mostly benific, it aspects 5th ,7th and 9th houses.while aspect of saturn is mostly malefic it aspects 3,7th and 10 th houses from its position, saturn lending an aspect to its own house ,well a lot depends on placement of saturn and some other factors pretaining to the chart of individual , you just cant make a generalised statement about it as lot of permutations and combinations are involved.

    Regards

Your posts on Evils at birth and antidotes are very great.I wish with your blessings & god's grace I should acquire the ability to store all the information in my tiny brain for applications.

What I meant by Curses and remedies is that Shabham(Curse)inherited from ancesstors and the way the planets show in a natal chart,if present.

If I am not wrong,is the 5L is concerned with such a thing. Please correct me.

    1. Those are the evils (due to a native). I now narrate the antidotes for such evils as well, which will be helpful to assess the extent of inauspiciousness.

    2. Should one among Mercury, Jupiter and Venus be in an angle from Lagna, all evils are destroyed, as Sun eliminates darkness.

    3. Just as a single reverential obeisance before Lord Shiva, the Trident holder frees one from all sins, a single, but strong Jupiter in Lagna will ward off all the evils.

    4. Lagna Lord is singly capable of counteracting all evils, if he is strongly placed in an angle, just as Lord Shiva, the holder of the Bow destroyed the three cities, built of gold, silver and iron for the demons by Maya.

    5. All evils are destroyed, if a benefic aspects Lagna of one born during the night in the bright half. Similarly a malefics Aspect on Lagna of one born during day time in the dark half.

    6. Sun in 12th will confer a hundred-year life span on one born in Libra Lagna.

    7. It will prove auspicious for the mother as well as the native, if Mars joins, or is aspected by Jupiter.

    8. If malefics are surrounded by benefics, while angles, or trines are themselves benefic-occupied, evils disappear soon. Not only this, evils will not follow from the Houses concerned.

  5.

    23. The life span of the child will be either 2 months, or 6 months only, if all Planets devoid of strength are relegated to Apoklima Houses.

    24. Evils to Mother (up to Sloka 33). The mother of the native will incur evils (will die soon), if Moon at birth receives a Aspect from three malefics. Benefics, giving a Aspect to Moon, will bring good to the mother.

    25. Should 2nd House be occupied by Rahu, Mercury, Venus, Sun and Saturn, the child's birth has been after its fathers death, while even the mother will face early death.

    26. If Moon is in the 7th, or the 8th from a malefic, be herself with a malefic and receives a Aspect from a strong malefic, predict mothers end to be early.

    27. The child will not live on mothers milk, but on that of she-goat, if Sun is exalted, or debilitated in 7th House.

    28. Should a malefic be in the 4th, identical with an inimical Rāśi, counted from Moon, while there is no benefic in a Kendra, the child will lose its mother in a premature manner. 29. Malefics in 6th and 12th House will bring evils to mother. The child's father will receive similar effects, if 4th and 10th House are captured by malefics.

    30. Mercury in 2nd House, while malefics occupy 1st and 12th House: this Yoga will destroy the entire family.

    31. Jupiter, Saturn and Rahu, respectively, posited in 1st, 2nd and 3rd House will cause mothers death early.

    32. Doubtlessly the mother will give up the child, if it has malefics in Konas, counted from the decreasing Moon. No benefic shall be conjunct with the said malefics.

    33. If Mars and Saturn are together in a Kendra with reference to Moon and occupy one and the same Navāmśa, the child will have two mothers. Yet it will be short-lived.

    34. Evil to Father (up to Sloka 42). Ones father will incur early death, if Saturn, Mars and Moon in their orders are in 1st, 7th and 6th House.

    35. The native will at the time of his marriage lose his father, if Jupiter is in 1st House, while Saturn, Sun, Mars and Mercury are together in 2nd House.

    36. Early loss of father will take place, if Sun is with a malefic, or is hemmed between malefics, as there is another malefic in the 7th from Sun.

    37. Remote will be the possibility of ones father sustaining, if Sun is in 7th, while Mars is in 10th and Rahu is in 12th House.

    38. Early and troubled will be ones fathers death, if Mars is in 10th House identical with his enemy Rāśi.

    39. Moon in 6th House, Saturn in 1st House and Mars in 7th House: this array of heavenly bodies at birth will not ensure a long span of life for the father.

    40. If Sun receives a Aspect from Saturn and be in Aries, or in Scorpio Navāmśa, the father would have given up the family before birth of the child, or would have passed away.

    41. If 4th, 10th and 12th House are all occupied by malefics, both the parents will leave the child to its own fate and wander from place to place.

    42. The father will not see the native till his (the natives) 23rd year, if Rahu and Jupiter are together in an inimical Rāśi identical with 1st, or 4th House.

43-45. Parents. Sun is the indicator of father for all beings, while the mother is indicated by Moon. Should Sun receive a Aspect from one, or more malefics, or be hemmed between them, this will cause evils to father. Similarly Moon be considered in respect of mother. Malefics in the 6th, the 8th, or the 4th from Sun will bring inauspicious results about the father. Malefics in such places from Moon will be adverse for the mother. The strength, or otherwise of the occupants concerned be suitably estimated

  6. Dear anusha ji,

If you are talking about Evils at birth and antidotes hereis the post. But if you are talking about general remedies to ward of the malefic effects of planets, iwill start a new thread very soon on nine planets and the remedies.

    ><st1:country-region w:st=<st1:place w:st="on">Ch.</st1:place></st1:country-region> 9. Evils at Birth

    1. O Brahmin, first of all estimate the evils and checking factors thereof through Lagna and then declare the effects of the 12 Houses.

    2. Evils, causing premature end, exist up to the 24th year of ones age. As such, no definite calculation of life span should be made till such year of age.

3-6. Short-life Combinations (up to Sloka 23). Should Moon be in 6th, 8th, or 12th House and receives a Aspect from a malefic, the child will die soon. If in the process there be a Aspect from a benefic, it may live up to 8. If a benefic is retrograde in 6th, 8th, or 12th House, receiving a Aspect from a malefic, death will occur within a month of birth. This is true, only when Lagna is not occupied by a benefic. Should 5th House be occupied by Saturn, Mars and Sun jointly, (early) death of mother and brother will come to pass. Mars, placed in 1st, or in 8th House and be conjunct with Saturn, or Sun, or receiving a Aspect from a malefic, being bereft of a Aspect from a benefic, will prove a source of (immediate) death.

7-11. If Saturn and Mars give a Aspect to Lagna, as the lumin6thes are conjunct with Rahu (elsewhere), the child will live a fortnight. Immediate death of the child along with its mother will occur, if Saturn is in 10th House, Moon in 6th House and Mars in 7th House. One will immediately go to the abode of Yama, if Saturn is in 1st House, while Moon and Jupiter are in their order in 8th and 3rd House. Only a month will be the span of ones life, who had Sun in 9th House, Mars in 7th House and Jupiter and Venus in 11th House. All Planets (any Planet) in 12th House will be the source of a short life, specifically the lumin6thes, Venus and Rahu. But the Aspect of these four Planets (on 12th House) will counteract such evils.

    12. Moon is capable of causing early end, if she is with a malefic in 7th, 8th, or 1st House and unrelated to a benefic.

    13. Early death will come to pass, if there be a birth in the morning, or evening junctions, or in a Hora, ruled by Moon, or in Gandanta, while Moon and malefics occupy Kendras from Lagna.

    14. Definition of Sandhya. 3 Ghatis before the sight of the semi disc (half) of the rising Sun and a similar duration, following Sun’s set, are called, as morning twilight and evening twilight, respectively.

    15. Early Death. Should all the malefics be in the oriental half, while benefics are in the occidental half, early death of one born in Scorpio will follow. In this case there is no need of any rethinking.

    16. Malefic in 12th and 6th House, or in 8th and 2nd House, while Lagna is hemmed between other malefics, will bring early death.

    17. Malefics, occupying 1st and 7th House, while Moon is conjunct with a malefic with no relief from a benefic, will also cause premature death.

    18. Early death will be inflicted on the native, if decreasing Moon is in 1st House, while malefics capture 8th House and a Kendra. There is no doubt about that.

    19. Moon in 1st, 8th, 12th, or 7th House and hemmed between malefics will confer premature death.

    20. Should Moon be in 1st House, hemmed between malefics, while 7th, or 8th House has a malefic in it, he will face immediate death along with his mother.

    21. Should Saturn, Sun and Mars be in 12th, 9th and 8th House without Aspect from a benefic, the child will face instant death.

    22. With a malefic in 7th House, or in the rising Dreshkana, while decreasing Moon is in 1st House, death be experienced early.

7. Chart 13 is of an engineer. He is good looking, possesses movable

and immovable property, has three children, 2 sons and a daughter. The

financial position is also sound. Jupiter falls in the 4th house in

Pisces and Saturn is in the 10th house in opposition to Jupiter. The

native's Jupiter is stronger, so Jupiter's results will be more

    prominent. The native is a very good-natured, well-behaved, kind-hearted

and God-fearing person. Jupiter in the 4th house has bestowed on him

much landed property. Saturn in Virgo in the 10th has made the native an

    engineer.

If we compare this and previous cases, we find that Jupiter is

there in Pisces and Saturn in Virgo in both the cases. In the previous

case Jupiter occupied the 10th house so the native is a teacher while in

the present one Saturn is in the 10th so the native is an engineer.

Jupiter is stronger as he is in own sign, therefore, Jupiter's result is

    prominent in both the cases.

The native of Chart 14 born in Virgo with Saturn in Lagna has

Jupiter in the 7th house. The wife of the native has a sickly

constitution. She is an air hostess. She suffers from windy diseases,

pains in the body, stomach troubles. So far as the native's physique and

personality are concerned, they fit with Jupiter in the Lagna. He is

very tall, extremely handsome and smart, very generous and kind-hearted

etc. So here again we find that Jupiter aned Saturn have exchanged their

properties when placed opposite each other.

The native has changed many vocations including films but he is

till unsuccessful. He has a daughter.

Here, I would like to repeat again that Jupiter is in own sign

Pisces. So Jupiter's results will also be experienced for the 7th house,

so the wife is quite good-looking, noble and earning. Jupiter has

absorbed Saturn's nature also which has caused secret, chronic diseases

which are difficult to diagnose. Saturn's influence over Jupiter delayed

the marriage which took place in the 30th year.

Natives where Saturn and Jupiter are in opposition are not very

successful persons. They are not usually rich and are not properly

    settled in profession.

The native of Chart 15 is an engineer in PWD and is a frustrated

man. He has faced lots of troubles in life. There has mostly been a

downward trend. He has two daughters and three sons. Even after

completing 32 and 30 years of age, the daughters could not get married.

The sons are a great cause of humiliation, disturbance and tension at

home. Financially the native's position is below par and he is dependent

on his sons. Jupiter is posited in Gemini in Lagna while Saturn is in

the 7th. The wife's nature and appearance are of Jupiter and the

native's personality is that of Saturn. Jupiter and Saturn's opposition

in respect to Lagna should not be regarded as good. I have found that

such a native is not a happy person so far as his professional

settlement is concerned. There are many downs in life and such natives

remain unsettled for a very long time. His earnings are not smooth,

children are not placed in high walks of life and they are often a cause

of worry. As far as physical characteristics are concerned, Saturn and

    Jupiter exchange their properties.

The native of Chart 16 was born in Gemini Ascendant with Jupiter

in 11th and Saturn in 5th in his sign of exaltation. The native is a

clerk in the bank and is truth-loving. Saturn in the 5th would have made

him a liar, cunning, very clever etc., as Saturn owns 8th house but it

is just the reverse in this case. The native has daughters only. Usually

Jupiter-Saturn opposition gives daughters if the Lagna is not a watery

    sign.

Chart 17 is the horoscope of an ENT surgeon, who is very handsome

and smart. He has an extremely beautiful wife and two daughters. Now

look at Saturn's position in the 2nd house in Leo. That should not have

given him such a magnetic face, magnetic speech and captivating eyes

which he has been blessed with. Jupiter's position in the 8th in

opposition to Saturn should also be judged. Jupiter in the 8th house and

Saturn in the 2nd have exchanged their results. Jupiter gives the

effects of the 2nd house in Leo. Saturn in the 2nd house has resulted in

a serious accident to his car with a truck during Saturn's sub-period in

Jupiter when Mars was transiting Leo. The accident took place on 12th

August 1989. The native was hospitalized for multiple fractures.

I have illustrated here several cases to prove the combined effect

of Jupiter-Saturn' s conjunction as well opposition. I have found that

Jupiter and Saturn exchange their properties when they are placed

opposite each other except when the 4th house or where Jupiter is

    stronger. Particularly when Jupiter occupies his own sign;

Jupiter-Saturn conjoin in the 2nd house, it is auspicious for learning,

family, etc. But the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn cannot be

regarded as very auspicious in all cases. In the Lagna, I have found

this most damaging for career. Either both are conjoined or placed

    opposite each other.

If the Yoga falls in the Lagna it is bad for settlement and happiness of

Life. It is bad for happiness from children. If Ascendant is a watery

sign, there will be many issues. In the 2nd house the good results will

be experienced. There will be money, property, education and children.

Accumulation of wealth begins from the age of 48. Before this, savings

will be less. In the 3rd house the childhood is troublesome. Here it is

good for children and brothers for Cancer Ascendant. If this combination

falls in a fiery sign, there will be problems at child-birth. Number of

coborns is less. In the 4th house it gives very auspicious results. If

their conjunction takes place in the 4th in Aries, Leo, Sagittarius,

Virgo or Capricorn, the results will be very encouraging. The children

    will prosper.

There will be all kinds of luxuries, wealth, prosperity and happiness.

In the 5th house, there are obstructions in completing education, they

are inclined towards law studies. They are prone to liver troubles and

diseases of the digestive system; it is not good for male children. In

the 6th house, they suffer from chronic diseases, mostly they are in

service with a hand to mouth existence. In the 7th house, it is bad for

marital happiness. There is a possibility of infidelity. In case of two

marriages, the native gets a lot of wealth. In the 8th, it is bad

combination, may cause trouble in digestive system, the native serves

others. In the 9th house this gives good results only for Aries and

    Cancer Ascendants.

It is not good for either of the parents. In the 10th this brings one

into the profession of law or the native serves others. Usually the

native does not get success in business. In the 11th house it is bad for

business. One faces many failures and can hardly make ends meet. There

are mental setbacks. Mostly it is bad for children. The 12th house is

the place where Jupiter and Saturn show very auspicious results. One

gets lot of power and fame. There is only one wife who dominates the

native. This combination elevates the native's position. The wife of the

native may be deceitful and unfaithful and may beget an illegitimate

issue. But the 5th house and lord thereof must also be viewed carefully.

There is much scope for further research in this combination. The

combination of Jupiter and Saturn is a very important combination which

should never be ignored. Otherwise, it will not be possible to judge a

    horoscope correctly.

Saturn; Libra: Rahu; Scorpio: Mars; Capricorn: the Sun; Aries: Jupiter

    and Ketu; and Taurus: Mercury.

In Chart 8, Jupiter and Saturn are placed in the 11th house in

Sagittarius. Jupiter is occupying 11th house as 2nd lord in association

with the Lagna lord Saturn. The lord of the 10th Mars is also involved

in mutual aspect with Jupiter and Saturn; so the native must have been a

rich person as per the rules of Astrology. But in fact, he has suffered

losses in business. He is doing nothing now. The native's education has

also been indifferent and quite unhappy.

This native expired on 15-101982 at 22 years due to serious liver

trouble (cirrhosis). Jupiter and Saturn's conjunction in the 5th house

in Sagittarius may be noted which is responsible for the death of the

native. The aspect of the Sun over Saturn has added fuel to fire.

The combination of Jupiter and Saturn occurs in the 5th house in

Sagittarius in the same position as in Chart 9. Mars occupies the 11th

house and has an aspect over Jupiter and Saturn, which is most dangerous

for the liver. The native also suffered from jaundice, liver abscess and

    other allied troubles.

The purpose of both of these illustrations is only to show that

the Jupiter-Saturn combination in the 5th house causes liver troubles in

    the digestive system.

I shall now deal with cases where Jupiter and Saturn are in

    opposite houses.

In chart 11 Mars and Jupiter occupy Gemini Lagna while Saturn

joins the 7th house in Sagittarius.

Saravali (Ch.30, sloka 50) says Jupiter in Lagna gives an

attractive appearance to the native. The naïve lives long and

possesses energy. He will act only after carefully assessing the

consequences, will be learned, courageous and great.

Bhrigu Sutras mention (Ch.5 sloka 1 to 6) that Jupiter in Lagna in

own sign makes one a good speaker, well versed in sastras, he will have

full knowledge of the Vedas, a number of children, will be happy,

long-lived and learned. If Jupiter in Lagna is placed in an inimical

sign or in debilitation, the native will indulge in sinful deeds, he

will have an unstable mind and medium span of life. He will be

childless, full of false vanity, will forsake near relatives and

well-wishers, likes traveling, will be inimical towards others and

    miserable.

Phaladeepika says that Jupiter in Lagna will give a handsome

appearance. He will perform religious acts, will live long, be fearless

    and will have children.

Now, let us see the results of Saturn in the 7th house. Saravali

(Ch. 30 sloka 80) says that the native will possess a weak body, lose

his wife, be bereft of wealth, will make himself ugly and do mean acts.

Bhrigu Sutram (Ch.7 sloka 31): The native will have a lean bodied

wife, will be afflicted in body, will indulge in prostitution. He will

    also be very sorrowful.

To prove the above findings, the results as described for Saturn

in Lagna and Jupiter in the 7th house should also be understood.

Saturn in Ascendant makes one dirty, poor, ugly in appearance,

miserable, many diseases, sinful, etc., but in exaltation or own sign

will make the native equal to a king.

Jupiter in the 7th makes the native acquire a beautiful wife,

charming, enjoy abundant sexual pleasure and be happy. Jupiter in Cancer

may result in loss of wife.

Now let us see the position of Jupiter and Saturn in the above

chart. Saturn occupies the 7th and Jupiter is posited in the ascendant

with Mars. The native is a private medical practitioner. He is

short-statured, dark complexioned, of elderly appearance and other

qualities of Saturn in the Ascendant are present in him, whereas his

wife is extremely fair in complexion, very charming in appearance and

behaviour and comes from a royal family. She is a famous TV actress.

Married life is just tolerable but inclined towards unhappiness.

Here Saturn is giving results as if placed in Lagna whereas

Jupiter's influence is of the 7th house instead of the Ascendant. Thus

Jupiter and Saturn have exchanged their results here. Let us see another

chart for the confirmation of these findings. In Chart 1 Saturn occupies

Lagna and Jupiter is in the 7th. The results are just opposite. Jupiter

has given the results of Lagna while Saturn has bestowed the effects of

7th house. Here it again shows the exchange of properties between

    Jupiter and Saturn.

The native of Chart 11 has a son and a daughter. The daughter is

not married and is a cause of great worry whereas the son is also very

dissatisfied with his job since many years. The native's practice is

    also below par.

The naïve of Chart 12 is a professor in an engineering college.

He possesses a house of his own and lands along with various movable

properties. He has two beautiful sons and enjoys a very high reputation

in society and among relatives. Jupiter and Saturn's opposition can be

noted in the 10th and 4th houses. Here Jupiter and Saturn do not appear

to exchange their results as Jupiter in Pisces has made the native a

teacher. Saturn in the 4th house in Virgo has cause long trouble in his

boyhood. Saturn in Virgo with the 5th lord Venus gives an inclination

for engineering. Saturn is the lord of 8th house and its placement in

the 4th house will cause chest trouble, illness to mother, gains through

legacy and a complicated mind. Such a native hardly reveals his thoughts

to any one. The native possesses these qualities. The mother of the

native died of cancer in 1989.

  9. Chart 2 is that of a lady who was a very good dancer and had

defeated Gopi Krishna in her college days. She got married to a doctor

    and has two daughters.

The combination of Jupiter and Saturn may be noted in the 5th

house in Aries. Here Jupiter owns the Lagna and the 4th house and the

position of Jupiter in the 5th must be encouraged due to relationship

between angles and trines. But Saturn's conjunction with Jupier has

damaged the combination to a great extent.

The following are the results of the combination: There have been

only female children. The lady and her husband are both very fair and

good-looking but the case is just the reverse with her daughters. A

daughter became pregnant before marriage and this led to much

    humiliation for the family.

Jupiter-Saturn conjunction is responsible or such children. This

is not a good combination or wealth, if it has anything to do with the

concerned houses. Here Saturn owns the 2nd and aspects the 11th house.

Her husband had very good private medical practice before marriage but

the income gradually went down afterwards. She also suffered heavy

losses. She suffered from liver troubles more than once and even now,

    has a sluggish liver.

The native is the son of a highly reputed and rich person. All the

family members are highly placed except him. Saturn's conjunction with

Jupiter in the 2nd house can be noted. Here Saturn owns the 3rd and 4th

houses while Jupiter owns the 2nd and 5th houses. The native has no

money. He has to depend on others even for a few rupees. He is just

roaming about in search of a job.

He has damaged the reputation his father to some extent. He could

not get higher education. The combination of Jupiter and Saturn should

be held responsible for it. However, the adverse results do not show up

if Saturn is in own or exaltation sign.

    Chart 4: Born on 30-8-1961 at 9.45 a.m. at 80°E55', 26°N25'

The horoscope pertains to a native who has established many

factories by his own efforts and is an `A' class businessman.

The combination of Jupiter and Saturn may be noted in the 4th

house. Both are retrograde in Capricorn and hence behave like exalted

planets. The native is a graduate only and possesses a new car, big

house and all other modern comforts of life. He has a daughter and owns

many factories manufacturing various articles. So here we find that the

combination of Jupiter and Saturn gave very good results in Capricorn

and in the 4th house. Jupiter and Saturn's conjunction or opposition

(4th house) will promote each other and should be regarded auspicious

    for lands, houses and properties.

The native of Chart 5 is highly educated and intelligent. The

combination of Jupiter and Saturn can be noted in the 2nd house. Jupiter

in retrogression gives the results of exaltation, the native has a good

    financial position.

    Navamsa: Aquarius: Ascendant; Gemini: Rahu, Mercury and Mars;

    Virgo: Saturn and Jupiter; Libra: the Moon; Scorpio: the Sun and Venus;

    and Sagittarius: Ketu.

The native is an Executive Engineer in PWD and has two daughters

and a Son. The children are very smart, beautiful and intelligent. The

native also possesses various moveable and immoveable properties.

The conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn falls in the 2nd house. Both

these planets are retrograde in Aries. Retrograde planets in

debilitation act as exalted planets. So Saturn and Jupiter are quite

favourable here for wealth, profession, education and children.

Thus in the cases cited above, we have seen if Saturn and Jupiter

are retrograde and conjoin, there will not be any inauspicious result.

Jupiter and Saturn combination causes all kinds of happiness and

    prosperity, if both are retrograde.

In the case of Virgo native (Chart 7), Jupiter and Saturn are

conjoined in the 4th house. The Sun and Venus occupy the 10th house. The

native is an IAS officer and is quite a happy person from all angles.

For what combinations have made him an IAS, my article "Planets and

Administrative Career" (A.M., January 1989) may be referred to.

  10. Jupiter-Saturn Nexus: an Exposition

    by Mrs Mridula Trivedi

The correct judgement of the horoscope needs a deep understanding of

planetary relationships. I believe that the application of the

fundamental rules of Astrology must be based on practical observation.

Whatever has been said by our sages in the classics appears to be

correct for different positions of planets for different Lagnas. Some

astrologers have said that Jupiter in the 5th gives mostly daughters

while others have said this position gives more sons and some say that

there will be no son at all. This is correct if properly applied and

tested, e.g., Jupiter in watery signs gives mostly daughters, in fiery

signs, male births and very bad results for Capricorn Ascendant.

The Moon and Mars are supposed to be friends but Mars is debilitated

in the Moon's sign Cancer while the Moon is debilitated in Mars' sign

Scorpio. Jupiter and Mars are very good friends but Jupiter is

debilitated in Capricorn where Mars is exalted. Mars is debilitated in

Cancer where Jupiter is exalted. Mars and Saturn are inimical but Mars

is exalted in Saturn sign Capricorn whereas Saturn gets debilitated in

Mars' sign Aries. Suppose the Moon is exalted in the 7th house, what

results should be expected? The Moon is inimical to Venus – will it

give inimical results in Taurus due to ownership of Venus or will it

give the results of exaltation as Moon is exalted there? We find that

mostly the Moon in Taurus in the 7th house, though the 9th lord

    (bhagyadhipati) , gives inimical results.

In the 4th house the exalted Moon shows tensions with mother. Jupiter is

inimical to Venus but Venus is exalted in the sign of Jupiter, Pisces.

Such planetary relationships and behaviour are beyond my comprehension.

I can only say that both are quite different aspects and should not be

    mixed up.

In my opinion it is always safer not to consider the exaltation or

    debilitation of planets at all.

Here, we are only concerned with the relationship between Jupiter and

Saturn. Jupiter is debilitated in Saturn's sign Capricorn and does not

give auspicious results here. On the other hand Jupiter's placement in

Aquarius, the other sign of Saturn, is very baneful while it has been

described as very good in Saravali.

In early 1987, a person dealing drugs came to me. He was born in

Libra Ascendant (Chart 1) with Saturn in Lagna and Jupiter and Saturn in

opposition to each other. I had found that whenever Jupiter and Saturn

are opposite each other, they exchange their characteristics. On the

basis of this experience I told the native that his wife should have

very ordinary complexion and she must have some kind of pain in the

body, like rheumatic pain or arthritis. I also told the native,

Jupiter's placement had given him a handsome physique, delightful

manners, kindheartedness, sincerity, influential behaviour, generosity

etc. Thus Jupiter's influence as described for his position in Lagna

could be noticed in the native.

    Chart 1: Born on 30-11-1952 at 5.00 hrs. at 29°N42', 71°E03'

with a balance of 1 year, 5 months and 16 days of Venus Dasa.

    Rasi: Libra: Ascendant and Saturn; Scorpio: Sun and Mercury;

Sagittarius: Venus; Capricorn: Rahu and Mars; Aries: Jupiter and the

    Moon; and, Cancer: Ketu.

Navamsa: Pisces: Ascendant; Aries: Mars; Cancer: Rahu; Virgo:

    Jupiter; Libra Saturn; Scorpio: the Sun, Mercury, the Moon and Venus;

    Aquarius: Ketu.

This incident reinforced my earlier conviction that Jupiter and

Saturn if placed opposite each other exchange their characteristics.

I have found in my experience the following about the relationship

    between Jupiter and Saturn:

    1. Whenever Jupiter and Saturn are placed together Saturn will

soak the results of Jupiter and Jupiter will soak the results of Saturn

i.e. Saturn will improve while Jupiter gets spoiled.

    2. If Jupiter and Saturn are conjoined with regard to the 5th

    house,

there will either be no male child or male children will not survive.

    3. This is not a good combination for high education. One having

this combination may not study well if favourable combinations are not

    also present.

    4. One of the children will bring a bad name to the family. One

does not derive the desired happiness from children. Mostly they will

not be placed very high in life.

    5. They do not have much wealth as the karaka of money gets

spoiled owing to conjunction with Saturn. This yoga may be said to give

a hand-to-mouth existence as far as money is concerned. The concerned

houses for wealth and their lords must also be taken into account.

    6. The conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in the 10th house makes

one a lawyer, advocate, magistrate or judge. It will be particularly so

if these planets own the 6th house.

    7. Jupiter and Saturn's influence on the 5th house may give

jaundice, cirrhosis or a sluggish liver. It may also cause gall-bladder

stones. This is very strongly indicated when Mars also influences this

    combination.

    8. If Jupiter and Saturn are retrograde, the results will not be

adverse. It will promote Jupiter's influence.

    9. If this combination takes place in any of the saturnine signs

or in the exaltation sign of Saturn, that is, Libra, evils of Saturn

    will automatically be cancelled.

    10. This combination will produce excellent results in the 4th

house. The opposition of Jupiter and Saturn will also be very

favourable, the native will be blessed with good children, moveable and

immoveable property, recognition, good for profession, education etc.

    11. In case of opposition of Jupiter and Saturn, if either of the

planets falls in own sign, the results of the stronger planet will be

experienced and the results of the other will become feeble.

    12. Jupiter and Saturn in Lagna and 7th house exchange their

qualities but if either of these planets occupy own sign, the results of

the other will be absorbed to a great extent. I have found that such

persons are very happy or successful so long as other strong indications

are not present. This is mostly applicable to Jupiter and Saturn's

opposition in respect of Lagna and the 7th house. This gives one wife

    only.

    13. Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in the Lagna is equally bad

for proper settlement in life. This may cause some physical disability

if other factors are also present.

    14. This Yoga should be treated as a Daridra Yoga. But it will be

slightly better if the combination takes place in jupiterean or

    saturnine signs.

    15. The combination of Jupiter and Saaturn is not so bad in fiery

    signs as in earthy signs.

No combination can give the same results in all possible positions or

for all the Ascendants. A combination may be auspicious for one Ascendan

while inauspicious for another. Dr B V Raman has explained in his

various articles how the result of a Yoga should be applied in a

horoscope. Such care must be taken for this Yoga as well. The

application of the finding should not be verbatim. This is very valuable

Yoga for accurate judgement of a horoscope.

One school of thought has described the combination of Jupiter and

Saturn as auspicious for Aries, Leo and Sagittarius Ascendants if these

planets join the Ascendant or the 5th house. For Taurus Ascendant, it is

not bad if it falls in the 8th that is, Sagittarius. For Virgo

Ascendant, it is good if the conjunction occurs in the 4th, 5th, 9th or

12th house. For Capricorn Ascendant, it is good in the 2nd, the 12th and

    9th houses.

For Gemini Ascendant it is good in the 11th and the 3rd houses.

For Aquarius Ascendant, the combination is auspicious in the 2nd, 7th

and 12th houses, while bad for all other houses. For Libra Ascendant,

this combination does not give good results in any of the houses. I do

    not agree with this view.

Jupiter stands for good and open actions while Saturn shows low

and hidden things. Jupiter represents prosperity, wealth and children,

whereas Saturn indicates adversities, poverty, sadness, depression etc.

Mixed results should be expected when both these planets conjoin.

In the first house Jupiter and Saturn make one cruel, indolent and

lazy. Such native does not get much happiness and comforts. Generally

this is not a good combination in Lagna for signs other that Sagittarius

    and Pisces.

If these two plants conjoin in the 4th house, good results are

produced. The native will be wealthy and famous, will have good friends

and relatives. He will have lands and property. Evil results are not

produced if Jupiter and Saturn are placed together in the 4th house or

    opposite each other.

The combination cannot be appreciated in the 7th house. The native

will lose money on account of women. He will be addicted to vices. He

will be avaricious for his father's wealth and will not be good-looking.

In the 10th house, the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn is

favoured. The native will have conveyances and cattle. He achieves a

high position and the rulers favour him.

    In Chapter31, slokas 79, 80, 81 and 82 of Sarvali Kalyanavarma has

described the yoga of Jupiter and Saturn for all positions of kendras.

In Chapter 25, sloka 24, the author of Hora Sara has mentioned

that the combination of Jupiter and Saturn in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and

11th houses is auspicious and in all other houses it is bad. In the 8th

chapter of Jataka Parijata there are almost similar views for this

combination. Garga Rishi has described the combination of Jupiter and

Saturn for all the 12 houses.

A few other works also have described the combination of Jupiter

and Saturn as bad while some others have described it as good. There is

much difference in their views. Let us see the effect of this

    combination on some horoscopes.

  11. Some more information on retrograde planets.

Retrograde of planet is not an actual phenomena. The truth is planets never retrograde; they are always in direct motion. But since the speed of rotation of planets around Sun and their distance from Sun are different, while viewing from earth we at times feel some planets as˜moving backwards or in other words as in retrograde motion, even though in reality it is not so. Anyway, even though ˜retrograde motion of planets is not a scientific reality, their concept is given much importance in astrology.

There is one unique concept related to retrograde that all astrologers should remember " i.e Cheshta Bala. Cheshta Bala (Ability to act)The 5 planets Ma-Me-Ju-Ve- Sa has the special ability to act (to provide a visible benefic or malefic result) while in retrograde.Planets who won the Graha Yuddha (Planetary war) and planets placed along with Moon also have the special ability to provide a visible result. It is due to this very fact that retrograde is considered important in astrology. It is fun to note that, there are diametrically opposite viewpoints regarding the result of retrograde motion. Retrograde planets are strong As per Phaladeepika Vakram gate swacha phalam vidadyal Sapatna neecharksha gato(a)pi khetaH (Phaladeepika) [Even if in enemy sign or in debilitation, if the planet is retrograde, the result equivalent to exaltation should be predicted (since exaltation makes them stronger)] Retrograde planets are weak As per the book Sri Trilokya Prakasa - Vakraga abala vakran margagaH subhada ravi Uttarayanago yuddhe grahanamuttaro bali (Sri Trailokya Prakasa) [Planets in retrograde are weak, and the planets in direct motion (are strong) and gives benefic results. Sun is strong during Uttarayana and weak during Dakshinayana. During planetary war, the planet in northern side wins (and not the one in southern side)] Moderate View Between these extreme views " one presented by Phaladeepika (considering all planets in retrograde as strong and benefic) and the ( other presented by Trilokya Prakasa (considering all planets in retrograde as weak and malefic), most of the popular and well- accepted traditional authentic texts such as Saravali, Dasadhyayi etc seems to take a middle path. As per them, ˜Benefics in retrograde gives beneficial results while malefics in retrograde gives maleficial results as well. 1. Saravali As per Saravali Vakrinastu mahaveerya subha rajyaprada rinam Papa vyasanadaH pumsam kurvanti cha vridhadanam (Saravali) [if benefic planets are in retrograde, they provide all kinds of beneficial results, makes the native a king by providing a kingdom to rule. But malefic planets in retrograde makes him wander a lot with out benefit (but provides the beneficial results at the end)] 2. Dasadhyayi Dasadhyayi supplements this derivation with the following statement Vakram gatasya hi dasabhramayati kulalachakraval purusham Vyasanani riipu virodham kurute papasya na subhasya (Dasadhyayi, Saravli) [Retrograde planets makes the native go in circle and circle (repeating the same task without success again and again) as if fallen into the circular wheel of the pot maker. Sadness, wrath of enemies etc will occur if malefic is in retrograde. (But benefic results will be received at the end). This derivation does not apply to benefics] 3. Jataka Parijata Jataka Parijata provides some clues but does not provide a clear picture. As per Jataka Parijata " 1) Sun and Moon " are never in retrograde (so retrograde results does not apply to them) 2) Mars " gives good results while in retrograde. 3) Mercury " (no comments) 4) Jupiter - (no comments) 5) Venus " gives good results while retrograde 6) Saturn " is strong while in retrograde. (But no comment about whether benefic or malefic) 7) Rahu and Ketu are always in retrograde (so retrograde results does not apply to them) Considering the above 3 views together, we can arrive at the following understanding " 1) Sun, Moon, Rahu, Ketu " Retrograde results does not apply to them 2) Mars " Becomes strong in retrograde. Should provide bad results (at the beginning) as per Saravali and Dasadhyayi; but should provide good results (at the end) as per Jataka Parijata. 3) Mercury - Becomes strong in retrograde. Results depend on whether Mercury is benefic or malefic. Mercury alone with one or more benefic becomes a benefic (due to influence) and Mercury with one or more malefic becomes a malefic (due to influence). Benefic Mercury in retrograde gives good results throughout, but malefic Mercury gives bad results in the beginning and good results at the end. 4) Jupiter - Becomes strong in retrograde. Should give beneficial result as per the guidelines given by Saravali and Dasadhyayi. (Jataka Parijataâ silence on this matter is skeptical) 5) Venus " Becomes strong and gives good results in retrograde. 6) Saturn - Becomes strong and gives good results in retrograde As per Saravali and Dasadhyayi the malefic Saturn should provide malefic results throughout till almost till the end. Near the end it should provide good results. (Jataka Parijata silence on predicting beneficial or maleficial result is skeptical) Secret from the Master: The general statement good-bad or beneficial-maleficial will not help much in practical astrological result derivation. The actual good or bad result that should be predicted as per the above guideline should be taken from - 1) The house-base result ascribed to that planet 2) The sign-base result ascribed to that planet All the pointers regarding retrograde planets available, should be used only as a guideline to USE the actual RESULTS pointed by the above two statements.

  13. Q. You have addressed yourself to the role of retrograde planets in a natal chart. How about their

behaviour when they are retrograde in transit?

    A. The predictive astrology has two major limbs to stand on. One is 'dasha' and the other is the 'transit'. A

retrograde planet in transit may have a different meaning, though there may be some resonance between

the natal retrograde planet and the same planet getting retrograde in transit. For example, a native who has

his 6th lord Saturn ® posited in lagna has repeatedly suffered problems from one or the other employee

whenever Saturn is retrograde in transit. During the retrogression it has given him a lot of mental anxiety.

Once the planet assumes direct motion, the problem evaporates, as if by magic. Please note that Saturn

and 6th house both denote employees. Generally, retrograde planets cause a repeat activity or the decision

is revoked, for the time being. Often the promotions or transfers are stayed for some time. Once the

retrogression is over, the concerned event moves ahead to its logical conclusion.

    Q. What is the role of a retrograde planet in Prashna (Horary) or Varshaphala (Annual Progression)

    Charts?

    A. Both the charts are essentially transit charts. The rules of their analysis resemble the Parashari system in

many ways. But there are significant differences too, i.e., in aspects, yogas and dashas, etc. Both these

charts in this respect are governed by Tajika Shastra. One of the most used yogas in Tajik is the Ithasala

yoga. If this yoga is present between the lagnesha and the karyesha (significator of the event in question), it

is a favourable situation for the event. To appreciate the role of a retrograde planet in these charts, let us

examine the Ithasala yoga. It literally means the yoga of 'intermixing'. The yoga is said to occur when:

    1. The lagnesha and the karyesh aare in mutual aspect. (Tajik aspects are different from Parashari

aspects: the 3, 5, 9, 11 positions from each other are friendly aspects; 1, 4, 7 and 10 positions are

inimical aspects; the remaining 2, 12, 6, 8 positions are neutral to each other and, therefore, do not

    constitute an aspect).

    2. These two planets are within the orb in influence from each other. (The orb is deterined by the

average of deeptamshs of the two planets. The deeptamshas are: Sun 15, Moon 12, Mars 8,

Mercury 7, Jupiter 9, Venus 7 and Saturn 9 degrees).

    3. The faster moving planet is behind the slower moving planet. (Planets in order of decreasing

motions are: Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn). Retrogression has some

bearing on this third and the most important condition of the Ithasala yoga:

    1. retrograde fast moving planet at lesser longitude does not produce Ithasala yoga since its motion is

in the opposite direction to that of the more advanced slow moving planet. They are actually

moving away from each other, therefore, they are not likely to intermix.

    2. The intensity of Ithasala is increased if the slow moving planet is retrograde and has higher

    longitude.

    3. When both the lagnesha and the karyesha (or even one of them) are retrograde, debilitated,

combust or otherwise weak, another yoga takes over this yoga. It literally means 'cancellation' of

the Ithasala yoga. It is an unfavourable yoga and does not allow the event to fructity favourably.

    Q. What are the results of benefic or malefic retrograde planets?

    A. If in a Prashna or Varshaphala chart:

    1. a benefit retrograde planet is a lord of an auspicious house and has a relationships with lagnesha

or karyesha, some repeat action is likely, e.g., an interview or promotion exercise will be repeated

and the result will be favourable.

    2. The result will remain favourable even if the planet involved in a malefic one, but besides the repeat

action there would be obstacles and tensions.

    3. If the benefic retrograde planet is a Trik lord, the favourable result becomes doubtful due to

    problems and obstacles.

    4. If a malefic retrograde planet is a Trik lord, then cancellation of the event takes place due to various

    impediments.

Thus we see that the retrograde condition of the planet, whether in natal chart or transit has specific and

    strong repercussions on predictive astrology.

  14. Q. Can the retrogression be extended to vargas (divisional charts) too?

    A. Most of the rules of analyzing the varga chats are the same as the birth chart, be these aspects, transit or

dasha. Therefore, one would expect no harm done if retrogression is applied on varga charts too. An

additional feature of retrogression that may have some relevance to varga charts is that retrogression is free

from the controversy of ayanamsha. Retrogression and direct motion will take place at the same time

irrespective of the choice of the ayanamsha. It is not the same with vargas. With a different ayanamsha, the

varga position of a planet often changes. This means that predictive work done based on a retrograde planet

stands on surer footing as compared to other parameters.

  15. Q. Does a retrograde planet have any influence on the health issues of the native?

    A. The results of a retrograde planet are definitely felt on the health and generally these results are adverse.

One of Parashar's dicta is that benefics in the kendras promote sound health. But experience suggests that

a retrograde benefic is not capable of doing so. In fact it would certainly cause some health problem

appropriate to its significations during its dasha. Our scrutiny of retrograde planet's influence on the health of

the native clearly confirms that even if a benefic lagna lord is in the lagna and is retrograde, it cannot protect

the native from the disease peculiar to the planet. Malefic retrograde planets are, of course, worse.

Moreover, the retrograde planet passes on its adverse influence to other planets by association or aspect.

The reader is referred to Chapter III of Subtleties of Medical Astrology by Dr. K.S. Charak for a detailed

exposition of this very important issue, with many examples.

  16. Q. Does it matter which sign the planet is retrograde in?

    A. Yes, it ought to. There is a principle that states: a planet that is moving towards its sign of exaltation,

(uchchabhilashi) acquires beneficence and the planet that has crossed its sign of exaltation and is now

moving towards its sign of debilitation (neechabhilashi) sheds some of its power to do good. With this

principle in mind, imagine a Jupiter retrograde in Leo and a Mars retrograde in Leo. As is obvious, though

both the planets are posited in the sign of a friend, but while Jupiter is moving towards its sign of exaltation,

Cancer, Mars is moving towards its sign of debilitation. Another principle that must be borne in mind is that

the retrograde planet is supposed to exert its influence from its preceding house also. Now take another

example, that of Mercury and Venus, both getting retrograde in Virgo. While the exalted Mercury would be

exerting its influence from Leo, a friendly rashi, Venus which was already debilitated, will now be deemed to

be in Leo, its inimical rashi. Therefore, which rashi the planet is retrograde in, is an important consideration.

    Q. What happens if a planet becomes retrograde when it is exalted or debilitated?

    A. There is an opinion held by some astrologers that a retrograde planet, if debilitated, acts like an exalted

planet; and an exalted planet getting retrograde behaves like a debilitated planet. The genesis of this opinion

probably lies in the fact that a retrograde planet does not behave as it is expected to. Therefore, results from

the other extreme are attributed to it. However, this opinion is not universally accepted

  17. Isn't astrology supposed to be dependent on astronomy which is essentially a study of motion of

    planets?

    A. Cognisance of velocity of a planet has been taken only in Shadbala which is the actual strength of a

planet arising out of six difference sources. Out of these six sources, one is termed Cheshtabala. It can

loosely be translated as 'attempt' or 'intent' of a planet due to its motion. A retrograde planet gets full 60

shashtiamshas as its Cheshtabala. All other states of motion get 45 or less. This strength is added to the

strength of a planet derived through a host of other sources. Thus its relative importance is very low in

Shadbala. Nevertheless, Venkatesha in Sarvatha Chintamani gives the results of the dasha of retrograde

planets, as under: The Sun and the Moon are never retrograde.

Mars: During the dasha-antardasha of Mars in retrogression, the native will be full of fear and trouble from

thieves, fire and snakes. He ay fall from the position held and may go to the forest, to live in solitude.

Mercury: In the dasha of retrograde Mercury the native gets good luck, wife, son and wealth. He also gets

to hear the sacred texts from Puranas and engages in acts of charity and bathes in the sea.

Jupiter: The dasha of a retrograde Jupiter bestows on the native much wealth, wife, sons, victory in battles,

friendship with the ruling elite and perfumes. He indulges in luxuries of speech.

Venus: During the dasha of retrograde Venus the native gets much honour from the ruler. He gets vehicles

fitted with excellent music systems, fine clothes and ornaments and ruling powers.

Saturn: Retrograde Saturn in its dashas causes failures in actions, frustrations in undertakings, sorrows and

loss of brothers. These results should not be applied verbatim as they will be modified due to other factors

present in a chart. But one thing is clear from these results that the author of Sarvartha Chintamani has

made a sharp distinction between malefics and benefics, and they remain so even if they are retrograde in

the natal chart. The view given above is that of one author. Another author, equally acclaimed, if not more,

Shri Mantreshwara of Phaladeepika, offers a strikingly different opinion. According to him a retrograde planet

has the status of an exalted planet even if it is posited in an inimical sign - no distinction between malefic

and benefic. This view may have some astronomical justification. The planet that is on the verge of

becoming retrograde is almost stationary; and so is the case when it is about to become direct. To

understand this better, one may imagine a child on a swing. When the swing is at its highest point, it is

momentarily stationary, since it has to change the direction of its motion. Even in-between these extreme

points, the planet is rather slow in motion as compared to its average speed. Thus it is possible for it to send

its radiations more strongly to the earth. This view that a retrograde planet acquires an element of strength

and beneficence is supported by Amsayu method of calculation of longevity. In this method the age

contributed by a retrograde planet is to be trebled. Such additions, or bharanas as they are called, are to be

done only in the case of those planets which are either exalted or retrograde. Howeve, our experience points

out that the result of a retrograde planet are contrary to expectations, they are erratic, inconsistent and

unpredictable. It may be so due to it native velocity. Predictive astrology seemingly assumes direct motion of

planets and the results are based on this tacit assumption. But results become unexpected when this

    assumption is not true.

  18. Dear all ,

All the relavant information you need on retrograde planets.

    Regards

    J.s.sandhu

Q.When is a planet called retrograde?

    A. When a planet appears to be moving in the opposite direction as compared to its normal movement, it is

called a retrograde planet. To understand this better we should look into the movements of planets. In Vedic

Astrology all astronomical observations are done considering the earth to be the reference point. This

system of observation is called 'geocentric'. In any system of measurements, the reference point is

considered stationary, though it may actually be moving. This may be likened to everyone's common

experience while sitting in a moving train. If the train you are sitting in passes by another train which is

moving in the same direction, but slower than your train, this other train seems to be moving backwards

against the backdrop of distant trees. This is so because you consider yourself to be the reference point and

hence stationary. Largely, a similar phenomenon takes place with the planets also, when they appear to be

moving backwards. In our solar system, the planets are orbiting around the Sun with varying speeds. The

earth is also doing likewise. Inner and outer planets: The planets that lie between the Sun and the earth are

called inner or inferior planets. These are Mercury and Venus. They can never go too far away from the Sun.

Mercury can go a maximum of 27 degrees form the Sun and Venus cannot go beyond 47 degrees from the

Sun. These two planets retrograde when they are between the earth and the Sun. The planets whose orbits

lie outside the orbit of the earth are called outer or superior planets. These are Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

The extra-Saturnine planets, i.e., Herschel Neptune, and Pluto are also in this very category. Outer planets

retrograde when the earth is between the Sun and the planet.

    Q. Ignorance about Mangala Dosha causes a lot of anxiety in many home. It is justified?

    A. Ignoring Mangala Dosha is also not right. Matching of horoscopes by a competent astrologer can save

calamitous results in many cases. Mangala Dosha by itself is generally not so serious unless the 7th house,

its lord and karaka have other severe afflictions too. Therefore, the entire horoscope must be scruitinized as

a whole. After all, besides Mars, there are eight other planets in the horoscope which may also have some

bearing (benefic or adverse) on the houses related to marital harmony. An isolated Mangala Dosha should

not cause much concern. One is likely to find as many happy couples with Mangala Dosha as without it, in a

    real world.

    Q. Do all planets become retrograde?

    A. Except for the Sun and the Moon, all planets become retrograde once in a while. Since the Moon is

essentially a satellite of the earth, its apparent and real movements are one and the same. Rahu and Ketu,

which are not physical planets are always in retrograde motion.

    Q. Can one spot a retrograde planet in a horoscope without it being specifically mentioned?

    A. Since Mercury and Venus are always quite close to the Sun (as viewed from the earth) it is difficult to

know from the chart alone when they are retrograde. But the outré planets are definitely retrograde when

they are in the 6th, 7th or 8th house from the Sun. Sometimes they are retrograde even when they are in the

5th or 9th house from the Sun, but not always.

    Q. Does a retrograde planet behave differently in predictive astrology as compared to a direct one?

    A. The classics have vexed eloquent about the position (longitude) of a planet in the zodiac as far as

predictive is concerned. That is the reason we have detailed descriptions of deepest points of exaltation,

debilitation, own rashi placements, and what not. But they are generally silent on the velocity of the planet.

Velocity has two components, one is speed and the other is direction. On speed there is silence again,

except when it becomes atichari; and on direction there is very little to go by. A planet is termed atichari

when it gains unusually fast motion immediately after it becomes direct.

  19. Raja Bhanga Yogas

This is one of the less discussed topics of Vedic astrology. That is because no one wants the Yogas in his horoscope cancelled by an astrologer. However the discussion is a part of Vedic astrology hence it is taken up. Casting horoscopes with Nakshatra Padas and exact degree of planetary placements is known to all. This becomes necessary to weigh and analyzes the raja yogas present in the horoscope. (Yogas for wealth, power and position etc). Planets in quadrants and trines and lords of quadrants combining or aspecting each other confer Raja yogas. Astrologers over look one fact while looking at these raja yoga combinations is that the mere presence of the raja yoga combination is not sufficient to give the materialization of the yogas.

The first factor is exact degree wise relation i.e. the orb of influence of the planets should meet and the second is the planets causing the yogas should not be in inimical signs, inimical bhavas, or combust with sun. If they are in the inimical signs, bhavas, or combust the raja yogas become defunct.

To cite an example say in a horoscope Aries is the ascendant, with moon exalted in Taurus and Jupiter in Scorpio conjunct with sun forming Gaga kesari yoga of name fame etc with moon. This yoga will not materialize as Jupiter is in the 8th house which is an inimical house and is fully combust.

If Ascendant and the Moon are without aspect from any planet the native with raja yogas even if he is a prince will end up as pauper.

A person born in Vyatipata yoga or at the time of Ketu udaya looses all his raja yogas. If the lords of 9th, 10th and 11th are in debility with malefic yoga and malefic aspect the benefits of raja yogas are nullified.

    Raja Bhanga Yogas

When in a horoscope the Moon becomes lonely without any planet on either side and no planet in its quadrant also the result is Kemadruma yoga which gives utter poverty. It cancels all raja yogas. There are several types of kemadruma Yogas.

. No planet in either side of Moon

. No planet in any kendra from a lone Moon

. Lone Moon with only Sun in Kendra from Moon

. Moon wit a malefic in the house of a malefic OR Moon in Malefic Navamsa aspected by the 10th lord when birth occurs in the night. (This will be more severe if 10th lord is also a malefic)

. If the 9th lord is laced in the 12th house and 12th lord in the 2nd house with a malefic in 3rdcauses Raja Yoga Bhanga

. Moon in ascendant or in the 7th not aspected by Jupiter is Raja yoga Bhanga

. Equal number of Malefic posted in ascendant and 7thnot aspected by Jupiter Is also Raja Yoga Bhanga.

Fortunately there are rules for cancellation of Kemadruma yogas:

. Lone moon but in a friendly house, or own house, own Navamsa and aspected by Jupiter.

. Lone Moon but in a kendra from ascendant and aspected by Jupiter.

. Presence of Vasumati yoga i.e. all benefics placed in Oopachayas 3, 6,10, 11 from Lagna or Moon cancels Kema druma and Makes the person extremely Wealthy.

. Lalatika Yoga :- Lone Moon in Cancer and8th from it occupied by Sun,Mars, Venus, Saturn

    OR

Vice versa Sun, Mars, Venus, Saturn in cancer and lone Moon in 8th from them Results in cancellation of Kemadruma and proficiency in fine arts and very rich.

. Jupiter in a kendra from moon cancels Kemadruma yoga.

Even when Kemadruma yoga is present the following factors reduce the intensity of the yoga:

    Moon in 3,6,9,12

    Moon in 1,4, 7, 10

    Moon in Cancer or Taurus

  20. Raj bhangg yoga.

Astrology is a deep and complicated science. There may be good yogas in the

horoscope but because of some negative cancellational factors, these yogas

may not fructify. There are many a complaint that the " Yogas in my horoscope

are not experiential". This is because of some Bhanga ( cancellational factors )

    hidden in the natal chart.

Regal Yogas are called Raja Yogas. They are formed by the conjuction of trinal

and angular lords. There are lakhs of Raja Yogas which are described in astro-

logical texts. Let us analyse the negative factors which can cancel Raja Yogas.

    1) Debilitated Planets

    2) Defeated Planets ( defeated in planetary war )

    3) Planets in inimical houses.

    4) Planets in Bhava Sandhis

    5) Retrograde Planets

    6) Combust Planets

    7) Planets associated with the North Node

    8) Vibala Planets ( planets devoid of strength )

    9) Lords of 6, 8 & 9 houses

    10) Lords of Angular Houses

All these cause Raja Yoga Bhanga.

    1) Debilitated Planets

Planets in their debilitation signs are considered to be weak. However, the scholar

should check for Neechabhanga Yogas, which offset debilitation. For instance,

if the dispositor or the exaltation dispositor is angular, either from the Moon or

the Ascendant, cancellation of Debilitation or Neecha Bhanga occurs. Neecha Bhanga

is considered to be a Raja Yoga. ( Raja Bhaveth Dharmika Chakravarthi ).

    2) Defeated Planets

Planets defeated in the Planetary war. Planetary war occurs when two planets

are in conjunction within one degree. The victor is the planet whose longitude is

less. The defeated one is the planet whose longitude is more.

    3) Planets in Inimical Houses

The planets in inimical houses are considered weak. During the directional influence

of these planets, the native suffers, unless there are cancellational factors like the

    dispositor posited strong.

    4) Planets in Bhava Sandhis or Rasi Sandhis

Planets at the Cusp between 2 houses is considered weak. So also planets at the

    Cusp between two Zodiacal Signs.

    5) Retrograde Planets

If malefics retrograde, they will cause unnecessary wanderings and journeys.

( Papa Vyasanatha Pumsam Kurvanthi Cha Vridhadanam ). Saturn & Mars retrograde cause unnecessary suffering and sorrow.

    6) Combust Planets

Planets when they become proximate to the Sun, become combust. Combust planets

are weak. For example, Mercury within 8 degrees of the Sun is very combust.

    7) Planets associated with the North Node

Planets in conjuction with the North Node, Rahu, is considered weak. Conjuction

means the planet should be within 12 degrees of the other planet.

    8) Vibala Planets ( planets devoid of strength )

In the Sixfold Source of Planetary Strength, if a planet gets Shastiamsas less

than the stipulated minimum, he is Vibala or devoid of strength.

    Minimum points for Planets

    Sun 390

    Moon 360

    Mars 300

    Merc 420

    Jup 390

    Ven 330

    Sat 300

A planet who gets lesser number of Shastiamsas than the stipulated minimum is

considered to be Weak without any cancellation.

    9) Lords of 6, 8 & 12 houses

The lords of 6, 8 & 12 are malefics by ownership. The 6th lord brings diseases

& problems from enemies, the 8th lord brings health hazards and the 12th lord brings uncontrollable expenditure.

    10) Lords of Angular Houses

Natural benefics like Venus and Jupiter, when afflicted by Angular ownership,

    become malefics.

  21. Dear anusha ji,

The said aspect is insignificant . Venus with a natural malefic planet in any house does not Augur well for marital happiness , leave alone the conjuction that is in 12th.

    Dear Sandhu Ji,

Thanks for you view.May I have one doubt cleared with regard to your observation above on Venus(Bhadak) with Saturn (Lord of 6 & 7) in 12th?

Does the special aspect of Jupiter from 11L to 7L (House of Sat) not counter the malefic effect of the cobination to some extent, sir?

How do you view the net effect?

    Regards,

    Anusha

Neech bhang raj yoga is good and cancels the debilation of the planet wheras raj bhang yoga cancels the effects of raj yoga and some other postive yogas.

    Neech bhanga raj yog.

    As defined By

    Dr. BV Raman:

    1) Lord of the sign occupied by a debilitated planet, placed in a Kendra (angle) from the Lagna or the Moon.

    2) The planet which gets exalted in the sign where a planet is debilitated is in a Kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.

    3) The lord of the exaltation sign of the debilitated planet is posited in a Kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.

    4) A neecha planet exalted in the Navamsa.

    II

    5) A debilitated planet being aspected by another debilitated planet.

    6) Lord of the Navamsa occupied by a debilitated planet in a Kendra (angle) or trikona (trine); the ascendant being a movable sign or the lord of the ascendant is in a movable Navamsa.

    7) Lord of the Rasi where a planet is debilitated is in a trine from the Lagna or the Moon.

    8) The planet that gets exalted in the sign where the planet is debilitated, is in a trine to the lord of the exaltation sign of the debilitated planet.

    III

    9) The lords of the debilitation and exaltation signs are in mutual kendras (angles).

    10) A debilitated planet, aspected by the lord of the sign, situated in an auspicious house.

    11) Lord of the Rasi in which a planet is debilitated or the lord of the planet’s exaltation sign, or the planet who gets exalted there is in a trine from the Lagna or the Moon.

Of the three sections given above, the importance of the yogas may be said to decrease in the descending order.

The planet creating the cancellation should not own, be conjunct or aspected by the rulers of, the 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th houses. Furthermore, the rulers of the houses where the Neecha Bhanga is taking place should be well placed and well aspected. If these requirements are not fulfilled then the Raja Yoga may not be complete, despite the fact that they may fulfill the rules stated by Dr.B.V. Raman.

    in bearest minimum short

Raja yoga is only when the debilitated planet occupies a kendra, otherwise it’s debility is merely removed

  23. Dear all ,

"Uccha Bhanga" is an undesirable disposition of planets. It happens

when two exalted planets aspect each other.

There is a saying in Tamil, "Ucchan Ucchanai parthal Jathagan pichhai

eduppan". The rough translation of the same is " when an exalted

planet receives the aspect of another exalted planet the native

    becomes a beggar".

Dr. B.V. Raman describes this disposition, as Uccha Bhanga Yoga and

is bad. He was of the view that the native heads for bankruptcy.

It is not uncommon to see in charts that when Jupiter is exalted in

Cancer and Mars is exalted in Capricorn.

  24. PLANETARY COMBUSTION

    1. If the Sun is a functional benefic planet, is the combust planet always considered weak?Let us first understand the combustion as a concept. Whenever a planet comes very near to the Sun, it is divested of its brightness (luster). The said state is called combustion. While in the state of combustion, the planets lack power to protect and promote the significations/houses ruled by them. If such a planet is weak on other accounts too, the significations ruled by them do not even take birth. The planets are said to be combust when they are within the below mentioned degrees on either side of the Sun.

When both the Sun and the combust planet are functional benefic planets and are closely conjunct, we have to see their two roles distinctively. Firstly, as the lords of the two auspicious houses they rule. The significations of both of these houses will flourish and will be connected to each other except the short run transit malefic influences which will stress the combust planet comparatively more than the Sun. Secondly, the role of a combust planet. The combust planet is considered as a weak planet but in case the Sun and planet(s) involved are functional benefic planets, the weakness of the combust planet(s) is operative only at the time of natal or transit afflictions.

    2. Can we call the combust planet “Weak”?Yes. The weakness due to combustion gives high and low tides in life and need astral strength for the planets to enable them to fight natal and / or transit afflictions.

    3. We understand that when combust, a planet will transfer its significations to the Sun. Right? Does that mean that if, say, the lord of the sixth gets combust, the Sun will take on its qualities of dispute, conflict, and injury, even if their orb of conjunction is more than 6 degrees?

If a functional malefic planet closely influences any other planet or the Sun, a functional malefic planet will certainly color the significations of the planet under its influence, negatively.

    4. Is there ever a time when the transit influence continues for a longer duration?

Generally, the maximum limit of transit influences is around four months when Rahu/Ketu axis is stationary.

    5. As for the Sun, to what extent the influence of the combust planet helps as the combust planet will be weak and not in a position to help the Sun?

When both the Sun and the combust planet are functional benefic planets and are closely conjunct, one should see their role as the lords of the two houses they rule. The significations of both of these houses will flourish and will be connected to each other except the short run transit malefic influences which will stress the combust planet comparatively more than the Sun.

    6. In a situation, where the dispositor of the Sun is combust, the Sun indirectly hurting itself by causing combustion to its own dispositor, would there be more weakness to both dispositor of the Sun and Sun itself, if Sun was a functional malefic planet for the ascendant in question?

    That is right.

    h) IN FRIENDLY SIGNS: When planets occupy the signs of their friendly planets, they are happy and feel free to produce results, if they are otherwise strong. The Sun, the Moon and Mars are friends and Jupiter is their preceptor. Saturn, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu are friends and Venus is their preceptor.I) IN INIMICAL SIGNS: When planets occupy signs of their enemies, they do not find themselves comfortable to produce results expected of them. However, any sign from where a particular planet aspects its own mooltrikona sign is an exception to this rule and a planet in such a state does not find itself restricted to produce results.j) AFFLICTED PLANETS: The afflictions to the planets or houses are caused by the close conjunction or aspect of the functional malefic planets in a nativity. Whenever a planet/house is already weak for any other reason and is under the close influence of any functional malefic, it is treated as an afflicted planet/house. But when the planet/house is not weak for other reasons, it can be considered afflicted either under the exact influence of a functional malefic for normal afflictions or under the orb of influence of two degrees for special/multiple afflictions, becoming a weak planet/house for that reason. So whenever any planet/house is afflicted, it becomes weak not being capable of fully protecting/promoting its general and particular significations. The significations of the houses having mooltrikona sign of an afflicted planet are harmed more when such planets are already weak for other reasons. k) WEAK PLANETS: A weak planet is not capable of fully protecting/promoting its general and particular significations during the course of its sub-periods and the transit malefic influences. Any planet is considered weak if: a) it is combust due to its nearness to the Sun.

    b) it occupies malefic houses from the ascendant, ( Except when in its own mooltrikona sign.)

    c) it occupies its sign of debilitation.(The planets are considered weak for all purposes if they occupy debilitated navamsa and are considered weak for specific purposes if they occupy the corresponding debilitated amsa. For example, if any planet is strong in rasi and navamsa, but debilitated in dasamsa, it makes it weak only for the purposes of the 10th house. But being debilitated in navamsa makes it weak regarding all its general and particular significations.)

    d) it is in the state of infancy or old age.

    e) it occupies debilitated sign in navamsa.

    f) it occupies the mooltrikona sign of a weak planet.

    g) it is the Moon within 72 degrees either side of the Sun.

    h) it is conjunct or aspected by any functional malefic planet within an orb of one degree.

    i) the most effective point of its house of placement is afflicted by a functional malefic planet within an orb of one degree. ( It only applies to nativities where the time of birth is correct.)

    j) the most effective point of its mooltrikona house is afflicted by a functional malefic planet within an orb of one degree. ( In this case, the planet should be considered weak for the purposes of its particular significations only. It only applies also if the time of birth is correct.)

NOTE: in the last three points, when the affliction is special or multiple, i.e. when it comes from:-

    1) a conjunction with/ aspect from the most malefic planet,

    2) an aspect of a functional malefic planet placed in a malefic house,

    3) a conjunction with Rahu or Ketu (Rahu-Ketu axis),

    4) an aspect of a functional malefic planet afflicted by other(s) functional malefic,

    5) more than one functional malefic planet at the same time,

    any otherwise “strong” planet should be considered afflicted (and weak) even when the orb of affliction is of two degrees. l) STRONG PLANETS: A strong planet protects and promotes its general and particular significations. Any planet is considered strong when it is not in the state of weakness. It can increase its strength if:a) its longitude is between 10º to 20º in a particular sign;

    b) it occupies own or good navamsa and other divisions;

    c) it is under the close influence of the strong functional benefic planets;

    d) it occupies its exaltation, mooltrikona or own sign;

    e) it closely influences the most effective point of the house.DISPOSITORAccording with Systems’ Approach, the dispositor is a planet in whose mooltrikona sign another planet is located in the natal chart. Suppose in a natal chart the Sun is placed in the sign Libra ruled by Venus. In this case Venus will be the dispositor of the Sun. No planet which is in a non- mooltrikona sign will have a dispositor i.e. the planet(s) in Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces have no dispositor. If a planet is posited in Aries, its dispositor would be Mars; if a planet is posited in Cancer, its dispositor would be the Moon; if a planet is posited in Leo, its dispositor would be the Sun; if a planet is posited in Virgo, its dispositor would be Mercury; if a planet is posited in Libra, its dispositor would be Venus; if a planet is posited in Sagittarius, its dispositor would be Jupiter; and if a planet is posited in Aquarius, its dispositor would be Saturn.DIVISIONAL CHARTSThe divisional charts (DCs) are the charts which are drawn by division of houses for specialized analysis of a particular signification; for example navamsa for considering general fortune and marriage, etc., and dasamsa for considering professional aspects in a nativity.
