2. Retirement in Puri

    by HDG Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur.

"Today we are sitting inside a bhajana-kutir at Sri Purushottam Kshetra. Why are we are living in this faraway place, leaving the great city of Calcutta, which is full of people and learned communities? A long time ago when we published this magazine, sajjana-tosani, I had a desire in my heart. I thought that the more the pure Vaisnava religion is spread through this magazine, the more the people of the world would benefit. We began to work with a free mind. Many educated gosvamis and babajis of Bengal came and pledged to help us. Some learned impersonalists joined us, and being overwhelmed by the beauty of devotional service, they began to help spread pure Vaishnavism.

After hearing nice instructions about Vaishnavism, materialists also became attracted. Professional singers and players floated in the waves of hari-kirtan and considered themselves fully satisfied. Gradually many assemblies for the chanting of the holy names of Hari were established in villages and cities. In this way the glories of pure Vaishnavism filled the hearts of the inhabitants of Bengal and overwhelmed everyone with their beauty and sweetness. On seeing such an unexpected response from the people of Bengal, we began to preach pure Vaishnavism with more and more enthusiasm.

Then by the influence of time a sudden change took place. The Glow-worm like superstitions that were hidden in the scorching heat of the sun of Vaishnavism suddenly took various forms and came from four directions. The demoniac religious principle in the form of Mayavada, which was immersed within the deepwater of forgetfulness for some time, again surfaced in the form of discourses, taking shelter in the boat of smarta teachers. At the same time some Indian and foreign yogis appeared as supporters of the smartas and created a revolution in the world of religion. Moreover some useless people, who were fond of sense gratification, took shelter of unauthorized religious practices and became to create a disturbance in society, identifying themselves as Sahajiyas and Bauls. Displaying the limit of their sinful propensity, a few worm-like people, who began to take pleasure in the stool of fame, began to advertise themselves as "the incarnation of the Lord" in the society of fools. Some people even accepted names befitting a Vaishnava, acted as acaryas and began to spread ideas that were opposed to Vaishnavism as if they were the religious principles of vaisnavas.

After seeing such unimaginable activities our hearts began to shatter. When we tried to search for the cause of such a change we suddenly remember the verse written by Srila Prabhodananda Saraswatipada:

"The age of Kali is formidable and the senses of the human beings are very powerful. Now the path of devotional service is full of many thorns. Where shall I go? What shall I do? I am completely helpless without the mercy of Gaurachandra."

While crying and speaking in this way, I went to the birthplace of the Lord at Sri Mayapura. Still my mind did not become peaceful. Thereafter I left my place in search of the Lord, and after arriving at Puri I began to role on the gold-like sand. At that time the Lord informed me in my heart, "O well wisher of the devotees may you attain peace. The nature that the living entities have developed, according to their respective karma from birth after birth, influences them to engage in fruitive activities. Until desires opposed to devotional service are destroyed in the heart no amount of good instruction can bring any auspiciousness. Such instructions will simply come out of the ear-holes and not enter the heart. No amount of preaching to them or discussing devotional service will produce a good result because of their bad karma. Your discourses and discussions will therefore not yield any result. My order to you is that you live at the place where I kept my dear Haridas and where I chanted the holy names of the Lord. You should constantly sing the glories of the holy names for the benefit of the fallen souls. As a result of the piety that people will achieve by hearing from you, and the faith they will develop, they will attain non-duplicitous faith in devotional service in some future lifetime."

Following these instructions of our beloved Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya, we built our bhajana-kutir in the tract of land surrounded by huge waves." (Sajjana-tosani, The Harmonist 15.1)

    Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.13.10:

    bhavad-vidhA bhAgavatAs

    tIrtha-bhUtAH svayaM vibho

    tIrthI-kurvanti tIrthAni

    svAntaH-sthena gadAbhRtA

bhavat--your good self; vidhAH--like; bhAgavatAH--devotees; tIrtha--the holy places of pilgrimage; bhUtAH--converted into; svayam--personally; vibho--O powerful one; tIrthI-kurvanti--make into a holy place of pilgrimage; tIrthAni--the holy places; sva-antaH-sthena--having been situated in the heart; gadA-bhRtA--the Personality of Godhead.

My Lord, devotees like your good self are verily holy places personified. Because you carry the Personality of Godhead within your heart, you turn all places into places of pilgrimage.

    PURPORT

The Personality of Godhead is omnipresent by His diverse potencies everywhere, just as the power of electricity is distributed everywhere within space. Similarly, the Lord's omnipresence is perceived and manifested by His unalloyed devotees like Vidura, just as electricity is manifested in an electric bulb. A pure devotee like Vidura always feels the presence of the Lord everywhere. He sees everything in the potency of the Lord and the Lord in everything. The holy places all over the earth are meant for purifying the polluted consciousness of the human being by an atmosphere surcharged with the presence of the Lord's unalloyed devotees.

If anyone visits a holy place, he must search out the pure devotees residing in such holy places, take lessons from them, try to apply such instructions in practical life and thus gradually prepare oneself for the ultimate salvation, going back to Godhead. To go to some holy place of pilgrimage does not mean only to take a bath in the Ganges or YamunA or to visit the temples situated in those places.

One should also find representatives of Vidura who have no desire in life save and except to serve the Personality of Godhead. The Personality of Godhead is always with such pure devotees because of their unalloyed service, which is without any tinge of fruitive action or utopian speculation. They are in the actual service of the Lord, specifically by the process of hearing and chanting. The pure devotees hear from the authorities and chant, sing and write of the glories of the Lord.

MahAmuni VyAsadeva heard from NArada, and then he chanted in writing; Sukadeva GosvAmI studied from his father, and he described it to ParIkSit; that is the way of SrImad-BhAgavatam. So by their actions the pure devotees of the Lord can render any place into a place of pilgrimage, and the holy places are worth the name only on their account. Such pure devotees are able to rectify the polluted atmosphere of any place, and what to speak of a holy place rendered unholy by the questionable actions of interested persons who try to adopt a professional life at the cost of the reputation of a holy place.

  5. "You Can See And Talk With God"

    Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.16.3

    Los Angeles, December 31, 1973

    listen

Pradyumna: Translation: "Maharaja Pariksit, after having selected Krpacarya for guidance as his spiritual master, performed three horse sacrifices on the banks of the Ganges. These were executed with sufficient rewards for the attendants. And at these sacrifices, even the common man could see demigods."

Prabhupada: Now, people say that "Why we do not see the demigods?" So the answer should be, "Where is your sacrifice, horse sacrifice?" The demigods, they are not so cheap. Just like the king or the president. Does he come anywhere, who is a cheap common man? No. Where the kings or the demigods or a great sage like Narada Muni will come, that place also must be worth coming there.

So there were interplanetary system. Just like Arjuna went to the heavenly planet, similarly, in such sacrifices, if it was arranged by great kings like Maharaja Pariksit and others, Maharaja Yudhisthira, then the demigods, invited, they would come. Not only they would come, but all common men could see. Therefore it is said here, yatraksi-gocarah, deva yatraksi-gocarah. We are much proud of seeing everything, but we should wait for being qualified to see. Not that whimsically I want to see, "O God, please come before me. I want to see." God... God is there just suitable for your seeing power. God is very kind. Here He is present in the temple. And you go on seeing. Then you will realize that He is God.

So God or demigod, everyone can be aksi-gocarah, within the purview of your vision, provided you are qualified. This is the process. These rascals say, "Can you show me God?" But what power you have got to see? First of all gain that qualification. Then you will see. God is everywhere. Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayan... Even He is within the atom. Therefore one who is not competent to see God, he is advised to see God in different way in the Bhagavad-gita. Just like Krsna says, raso 'ham apsu kaunteya prabhasmi sasi-suryayoh: "My dear Kaunteya, Arjuna, I am the taste of the water." So you try to see God there in the taste of water. At the present moment, we have got many senses. You want to see God with the eyes. So begin with your tongue. This is also another sense. Just like if there is nice foodstuff, if I say, "Let me see how it is,Let me see" means... You are already seeing. What do you want? "No, I want to touch in the tongue." That is "Let me see." Not by the eyes. If there is good sweetmeat, halava, then "Let me see" means "Let me taste." So first of all taste God. It is within your reach of the sensual perception, but try to practice. Then sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva sphuraty adah. Then you will realize. God will reveal to..., Himself. When you become submitted, devoted to God, by tasting the prasadam, you will see God personally. He will talk with you. That is possible.

So at the present moment, we want to see God, but we do not acknowledge that we are not qualified. How we can see? If I cannot see even an ordinary president... By my whims I want to see the president or the such and such big officer. You cannot see unless you are qualified. So how you can see God? That is not possible. You have to qualify yourself. Then you will see God. Aksi-gocarah. Aksi-gocarah means, just we are seeing -- you are seeing me, I am seeing you -- similarly, you will see the demigods or God, provided you are qualified.

So Maharaja Pariksit was so exalted king that by his invitation, the demigods would come and public could see. That was possible. That is stated here. He was so, I mean to say, exalted king, he could invite. And the kings also were invited. Just like Maharaja Yudhisthira went. That was interplanetary exchange. That is now not... You cannot go by the sputniks to the heavenly planet. The moon planet is also one of the heavenly planet. Or the other planets. They are all heavenly planets. Urdhvam. Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah. When you are competent, fit, for going there, then you can go there. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Yanti deva-vrata devan pitrn yanti pitr-vratah, bhutejya yanti.. [bg. 9.25]. You can go, but you must be qualified, pitr-vratah, deva-vratah. Similarly, you can go to Krsna also if you are krsna-vratah. Mad-yajino 'pi yanti mam. What to speak of going to other planets, if one is qualified, if one is pure devotee, Krsna says, "He also comes to Me." So this exchange of going and coming is not difficult, provided a person is qualified. Not a cat and dog can go. That is not possible.

So another important point is... Ajaharasva-medhams trin, three times. The asvamedha-yajna is so expensive that the king of heaven, Indra, he executed the asvamedha-yajna seven times. So Maharaja Prthu was also going to complete seven times. So there was some, I mean to say, competition. The Indra would not allow him to complete seven times. Otherwise he would become equal with him. So amongst the kings, not only in this planet, but in other planets also, the asvamedha-yajna was performed by very, very powerful rich kings, not ordinary kings. It is very expensive job. Because it is stated, bhuri-daksinan, and vast amount of money required for distribution in charity. Then you can perform asvamedha-yajna. Similarly, there is gomedha-yajna. Asvamedha-yajna was to send the horse with flag, that "Such and such king is the emperor of the whole world." So if some king in some state, he does not agree that "He is emperor," he will capture the horse, "I don't agree, I don't accept." Then there will be fight, "You have to accept." In this way there will be sacrifice.

So Maharaja Pariksit was the emperor of the whole world, whole this planet. So he performed three times. Now, that means three times he challenged, "If there is any dispute, any objection of my becoming emperor?" This is asvamedha-yajna. "If you have got any objection, then I will make you obliged to accept me. Otherwise, if you accept, that's all right. You remain in your state. Give me tax." This is the... So this is very expensive job. Formerly one king performed this asvamedha-yajna, and bhuri-daksinan. He gave in daksina... Daksina means in charity. Just like you give daksina to your spiritual master for initiation, similarly, here also, it is said, saradvatam gurum krtva. Everything must be executed under the guidance of a guru, not whimsically, "Oh, I have got my own idea, I have got my own God. I can do whatever I like." This is simply waste of time. Yah sastra-vidhim utsrjya vartate kama-karatah. In the Bhagavad-gita it is said that "Anyone who does not follow the instruction of the sastra, how things should be done," sastra-vidhim utsrjya vartate kama-karatah, "does things whimsically," na sukham savapnoti, "he will never get happiness." Yah sastra-vidhim utsrjya vartate kama-karatah, na sukham sa...

So everything should be done according to sastra. And the sastra should be guided by acarya, guru. Acarya means one who knows what is there in the sastra. He practices in his life and teaches the disciple. He is called acarya. Acarya is not a whimsical thing. He must know. Therefore Pariksit Maharaja appointed acarya, saradvatam. He is the brother of Dronacarya. Dronacarya was also acarya, but he was military acarya. And here he was acarya for Vedic rituals, acarya. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum eva [MU 1.2.12]. Gurum krtva. In order to do things very rightly, you must appoint... Just like if you are going to the court to file some suit, do it very nicely. You have to appoint a very good lawyer. Similarly, these Vedic principles, the Vedic rituals, they should be performed under the direction of acarya, guru, not whimsically. So therefore this kind of sacrifices are forbidden in this age, in this age.

That was discussed between Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Chand Kazi, the Muhammadan magistrate of Nadia. He, Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, challenged the Kazi, Muhammadan, that "What is your religion, that you eat your father and mother?" This was the challenge by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. What is that, father, mother? Now, mother, your cow is your mother. You drink milk of cow. And the bull is your father. Because without bull, without the cow and bull being united, there is no milk. So how is that you are eating your father and mother? It is a great challenge. Actually those who are meat-eater, beef-eater, they are killing their father and mother and become implicated in sinful life. Therefore we say no meat-eating. No meat-eating. If you become implicated in sinful life, how you can be happy? There must be nature's punishment. Just like if you infect some disease, nature must punish you. You must suffer from the disease. You cannot get out. It is not possible. Karanam guna-sango 'sya. Why there are so many varieties of life? Why not one class of men, all President Nixon? (laughter) Why not? Why there is bum in the Bowery Street? In your country I am saying. Why there are arrangement of first-class, second-class, third-class, fourth-class, fifth-class men? Or animals, or trees? Everything is there. Why?

That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita. Karanam guna-sango 'sya. As you have infected yourself with a particular type of modes of nature, you will get a body. That's all. If you have infected to get the body of a dog, you must be infected. People who are keeping dog, that means he is being infected by the germs of dog. Next life he will become a dog. He is infected. What he will think at the time of death? If he has got a beloved dog, he will think of... Somebody... In your country, they bequeath great, I mean to say, wealth, for the dog. That means at the time of death, at the time of death he is thinking of his beloved dog. So he must be a dog. So all his wealth goes to the dog and he goes to become a dog. This science is unknown to the rascals. Yam yam vapi smaran bhavam tyajaty ante kalevaram [bg. 8.6]. At the time of death, your position of the mind will create the next body. This is the science. So if you create your the position of the mind, Krsna conscious, then you will get a body like Krsna, sac-cid-ananda-vigraha [bs. 5.1]. This is Krsna consciousness movement, that "Why you shall love dog and cats? Love God, Krsna, and you get the next body like Krsna." Sac-cid-ananda-vigraha. Anadir adir govindah sarva-karana-karanam [bs. 5.1]. This is Krsna consciousness movement, how to think of Krsna at the time of death. Then your life is successful.

So that has to be practiced. Sada tad-bhava-bhavitah [bg. 8.6]. If you always chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, that means you remember Krsna always. So there is chance, ninety-nine percent chance, that at the time of your death you will think of Krsna and your life is successful. Very simple method. Make always your mind absorbed in Krsna. Naturally at the time of death you will think of Krsna. Mad-yajino 'pi yanti mam. That is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam iti kaunteya [bg. 4.9]. Such person, Krsna conscious person, who knows Krsna... If you think of Krsna, naturally you know of Krsna. You know of Krsna. Krsna is within your heart. So if you think of Krsna, then gradually you become Krsna-ized. Just like you put the iron rod in the fire. Gradually it becomes fire. Warm, warmer, warmer, then red-hot. When it is red-hot it is fire. Whenever you touch, it will burn immediately. Similarly, if you think of Krsna, the same example... Touching fire. So Krsna will purify you. Srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah [sB 1.2.17]. Just like you are being purified by hearing about Krsna daily. Otherwise why you are coming here? We have no money to bribe you to come here. You are feeling, becoming Krsna-ized; therefore you are coming.

So this is the process, simple process. You simply be engaged in Krsna consciousness. Then you become Krsna-ized, purified. And as soon as you become purified, you understand Krsna. Sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam. "You understand Krsna" means Krsna becomes revealed. Just like something is covered, you try to move the covering. You see the goal. Similarly, by your constant endeavor to become Krsna conscious, Krsna will reveal to you, "Yes. You are so anxious to see Me? Here I am. Here I am. Yes." You will see Krsna. So how this is possible? Premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilokayanti [bs. 5.38]. By thinking of Krsna, naturally you become attached. Just like materialists. They are always thinking of woman and money. So they become attached to woman and money, the materialists. So similarly, if you think of Krsna, you become attached to Krsna. It is not a difficult job.

So the asvamedham gavalambham sannyasam pala-paitrkam [Cc. Adi 17.164]. This was explained by..., why asvamedha-yajna is forbidden in this age. In this age no sacrifice is possible. There is no money. There is no guru. Guru means who can conduct the sacrifices. First of all there is no means. Even one can conduct, there is no means. It requires huge amount of money. Here it is said that bhuri-daksinan. Bhuri means an unlimited amount. Bhuri means very great. So there is no money. Neither there is expert brahmana also who can conduct such sacrifices, because they must chant the Vedic mantra so perfectly that even a horse or a cow is put into the fire, he will come out with a new life. That is the test. This Chand Kazi, Muslim magistrate, he also challenged Caitanya Mahaprabhu. When Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "What is your this religion? You are eating your father and mother?" Directly. Not that He was talking with a magistrate, He should be a little respectful. No. In spiritual matter, everything spoken frankly, no compromise. Just like we say, "You are not a Krsna conscious person. Then you are a rascal. That's all." You may be the president. That doesn't matter. But because you are not Krsna conscious, you are rascal. There is no compromise, "Oh, here is a big man. How he is speaking." We see everywhere. So many scientists come. I say, "You are rascal. You are demon." (laughter) I say it. And they tolerate. I prove that he is a rascal. I prove that he is a rascal, he is a demon. Then he tolerates, "Yes." We have got sufficient strength to prove, any materialistic man, to prove that he is a rascal. That is possible. Vidhi-mahendradis ca kitayate: "If one is practically a devotee of Lord, he doesn't care even personalities like Vidhi." Vidhi means Lord Brahma. Vidhi-mahendradis ca kitayate. Kitayate means such great personalities are taken by perfect devotee as ordinary insect. As ordinary insect has no value, similarly, anyone, however great he may be in this material world, if he is not God conscious, he is no better than the insect. Because it has no value. Because he does not know that he is going to become a dog next life. He loved a dog very much, and he bequeathed his all property to the dog, but he is going to become himself a dog. Therefore he's a rascal. What is his intelligence? He got some money. There are many instances in (your) country. They bequeath the whole wealth to the dog. Is it not?

    Devotees: Yes.

Prabhupada: So how much rascal he is, that? And if you go that "Give us some money for advancing Krsna consciousness,No, no, we are not interested in religion. I am interested in dog." So how much rascal he is, that. Just imagine.

So everyone is a rascal. Everyone is rascal. How we so boldly say that everyone is? Because Krsna says. We are Krsna-ite. We have to follow. Just like a small child follows the talkings of his father and mother, so similarly, we learn from Krsna. Krsna says,

    na mam duskrtino mudhah

    prapadyante naradhamah

    mayayapahrta-jnana

    asuram bhavam asritah

    [bg. 7.15]

Krsna says. So we have learned from Krsna. So we test. What is the test? Na mam prapadyante. He does not surrender to Krsna. So such person, what he is? Now, duskrtina, sinful. Meritorious sinful, that when merit is applied for sinful activities, you can do it very nicely than the ordinary man. A scientist discovers some method of stealing, how to break the treasury of the bank. So that does not mean... Because he is doing scientifically, stealing, that does not mean he is not a thief. He is a thief. How you can say, "Oh, he has done it very scientifically"? (laughing) The law will say, "You are rascal. You are thief. You must be punished." So these so-called educated scientists, philosophers, what they are doing? They are simply doing mischief. Therefore they are duskrtina. Duskrtina. Mudha. Mudha means rascal. Ass. Because nobody knows what is the aim of life. They're exactly like the ass. He does not know what is his interest. Unnecessarily he is carrying three tons of cloth of the washerman. Therefore he is called ass. His gain is a little morsel of grass. He can get grass anywhere. Still, he is thinking, "I am obliged to this washerman. Because he is supplying me grass, therefore I must have three tons of cloth on my back." This is ass. This is ass. He has no interest. Not a single cloth belongs to him, and he is carrying, oh, three tons of cloth. Therefore the ass. Ass means one who does not do know his interest, and he works unnecessarily and wastes his time.

So everyone in this material world, he does not know what is the aim of life. Unnecessarily he is making plan, this plan, that plan, this plan, that plan. And all plan is being frustrated by the laws of nature. Daivi hy esa gunamayi mama maya duratyaya [bg. 7.14]. Every plan will fail. And those who are plan-making persons, they are all rascals. They do not know that what kind of plan should be made. The plan should be made that everyone should be God conscious. Then every plan will be successful. Otherwise all, everything will fail.

So these sacrifices are forbidden in this age, Kali-yuga, because there is no expert brahmana who can conduct the sacrifices, neither people have got any means. Now, so far bhuri-daksinan, so there was one king. He performed this sacrifice, and by the grace of Lord Siva, he got the information of a golden mountain. So golden mountain, he collected enough gold from that mountain, and in the sacrifice he made everything made of gold, everything. So he distributed utensils. That is the system, that to the brahmana who attends the sacrifice, they are given money, utensils, cloth, bedding. Because brahmanas, they do not care for material possessions. They are simply engaged in Brahman consciousness, God consciousness. Therefore it is the duty of the ksatriyas and the vaisyas to give them in charity so many things, so that they may not feel any want of material necessities. They do not beg. So this king, he arranged for distributing to the brahmanas so many golden utensils that when they were given to the brahmana, each and every brahmana, some of them thought, "What is the use of such load?" This is brahmana. So after coming out from the sacrificial arena, they threw away. "Throw! Who will carry such a load?" Just see. This is brahmana. A big load of gold they neglected. They threw it away. "I don't want it. This king has given. All right, take. But I will throw away." (laughing) This is brahmana, yes. He doesn't care for all these things. Brahmana's another par..., is yajana yajana dana pratigraha. He accept charity, huge quantity, and next moment he spends or throw it away. That's all. Again poor man. That is brahmana. Again collect money. Spend it for Krsna consciousness. That is brahmana. That is brahmana. So bhuri-daksinan. Those... In very long, long years ago this was done.

So when Maharaja Yudhisthira was in need of money for performing this asvamedha sacrifice, so he asked his brothers, assistants, "Now we have spent all our money in this Battle of Kuruksetra. You know the expenditure of battle. So I require money. So where is the money?" So when Krsna saw that Arjuna and Maharaja Yudhisthira is is very much perplexed to secure money, so he asked his friend Arjuna, "You can go there, near Himalaya. There is huge stock of gold utensils, and formerly they threw it away. You can go and collect. Bring it." So immediately he went, and he collected all the thrown utensils of gold, and enough money was collected. Therefore Arjuna's another name is Dhananjaya. Dhananjaya means "who has conquered, securing wealth." Dhana means wealth. Dhananjaya.

So this is sacrifice. This is sacrifice. But it is not possible. Asvamedham gavalambham [Cc. Adi 17.164]. This is forbidden. Here, at the present moment, the yajna is sankirtana. Yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi su-medhasah. Here at the present moment this yajna is recommended. This is recommended in the sastra, not manufactured.

    krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam

    sangopangastra-parsadam

    yajnaih sankirtana-prayair

    yajanti hi su-medhasah

    [sB 11.5.32]

This is the process of yajna in this age. What is that? Now, krsna-varnam tvisa akrsnam. The God's incarnation, that is incarnation, not a manufactured incarnation. There must be reference to the sastra. So what is the incarnation? Pracchanna-avatara. In this Kali-yuga the incarnation is Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. It is stated in the sastra, krsna-varnam, krsna

varnayati: "He is simply chanting ‘Krsna,' although He is Krsna Himself." Krsnam-varnam tvisakrsnam. Therefore He has hidden Himself. His bodily color is more Krsna, but golden. That is also stated. Krsna has got four colors. Suklo raktas tatha pita idanim krsnatam gatah. When Gargamuni made the horoscope of Krsna, that "This child has three other colors, suklo raktas tatha pitah. He had His color. Red color and white color and now..., and yellow color. Now He has assumed black color." Suklo raktas tatha pita idanim krsnatam gatah. So therefore His name was Krsna. So Krsna has another color. Pita. Pita-varna-gaurah. That is Lord Caitanya. Therefore tvisa akrsna: "Bodily complexion, not krsna." Such Krsna, chanting Krsna... Krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam [sB 11.5.32]. Followed by many devotees, Caitanya Mahaprabhu. At least followed by Nityananda Prabhu, Advaita Prabhu, Gadadhara Prabhu, like that. So this is the description of the incarnation of God in Kali-yuga. Pracchanna-avatara. There is another avatara, Kalki.

So krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam. To such God the method is to sacrifice. The sacrificing method is yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi su-medhasah. Su-medhasah. Medha means brain substance. Those who have got good brain substance, such persons worship this Lord by the yajnaih sankirtanaih. So that we are doing here. Here is krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam [sB 11.5.32], Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu. Therefore our first obeisance is to Him, then Krsna. This is the process of Krsna consciousness.

    Thank you very much. (end)

I do not know how much nectar the two syllables 'Krish-na' have produced. When the holy name of Krishna is chanted, it appears to dance within the mouth. We then desire many, many mouths. When that name enters the holes of the ears, we desire many millions of ears. And when the holy name dances in the courtyard of the heart, it conquers the activities of the mind, and therefore all the senses become inert.

  7. Ultimate Success !

What is light for one is darkness for another.

Srimati Kuntidevi is successful because she is thoroughly defeated.

When one is winning, it is impossible to even think of surrender, so if surrender to higher truth is desired (ie Krsna consciousness), one must accept thorough defeat in all attempts in winning anything at all.

Srimati Kunthi is the embodiment of surrender, and her success is that she is defeated thoroughly.

The Teachings of Queen Kunti is the best book in describing the process of surrender, defeat, and ultimate success in what has any value at all.

Lessons for Life from the Bhagavad gita given in Mumbai ISKCON - A Talk by Giriraj Swami

Janardana dasa: You must be tired, Maharaja.

Giriraj Swami: Well, that reminds me of a story. In the history of the struggle for the Juhu land, some of Prabhupada’s leading disciples in charge at the time cancelled the purchase agreement with Mr. Nair. And when Srila Prabhupada heard, he said, ‘Then everything is finished.’ But some time thereafter, when Prabhupada was in Hyderabad, Mr. Nair agreed to come and meet him. Mr. Nair suspected that Prabhupada would use some mystic power to persuade him to do something against his will, so he brought a sadhu with him to counteract Prabhupada’s power. They were all sitting in Prabhupada’s room, engaged in light conversation, and at one stage the sadhu said to Prabhupada, ‘Swamiji, you look tired. You should take rest. We may talk later.’ Prabhupada replied, ‘Yes, I am very tired.’ So everyone left the room. But Prabhupada knew that the man was tired and that therefore he had asked the question. [laughter] A few minutes later Prabhupada called for Tamal Krishna Goswami. ‘When someone asks if you are tired,’ Prabhupada said, ‘it means he is tired.’ Then Prabhupada told Tamal Krishna Goswami, ‘Go and bring Nair. Let the sadhu sleep, and bring Nair.’ [laughter] So he brought Mr. Nair, and Prabhupada used his mystic powers [laughter], and Mr. Nair signed the new agreement. And here we are.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Gita Jayanti ki jaya! Hare Krsna.

  9. Consider the traumatic life of Queen Kunti:

As a young girl she was given away by her parents.

She gave birth to a male child before she was married.

Then, to avert social scorn she placed her baby in a basket, and sent it down a river.

Years later, her husband Pandu was cursed, so she couldn’t have children with him, but due to a mystical boon she gave birth to three more sons from three different males, only to learn her husband became lusty over her co-wife and died!

Subsequently, her eldest son reappeared and became bitter enemies with his unknown brothers, thus siding with the evil King Duryodana who tormented her family for years.

The king engaged in hundreds of political intrigues against them, attempted to poison her son Bhima, set fire to their residential quarters, and finally exiled her family from the kingdom for thirteen years after cheating at dice and attempting to disrobe her daughter-in-law in public.

As if that weren’t enough, upon her son’s return from exile they engaged in the bloodiest war during the last 5000 years wherein 640 million people were slaughtered in eighteen days.

After all this, her Lord, Sri Krsna, was preparing to depart and head home for Dwaraka.

He came to her, His aunt, to offer respects before leaving, and this is when Queen Kunti opened her heart and offered her prayers, which were filled with a sea of emotions.

  11. Fall, No-Fall

    BY: BALAVIDYA DASA

Feb 3, USA (SUN) — In our previous posting, we have shown how a quotation from a lecture by Srila Prabhupada has been misinterpreted by the "fall-from-Goloka-thru-envy-vadis" to support their odd misconception. In this short posting, we would like to re-present the same ever-fresh conversation to illustrate the intellectual bankruptcy of the "envy-goloka-fall-vadis".

However, first, we look to point out another misrepresentation by the "envy-vadis": We have posting explanations of the "fall" of the jiva, with all reference to guru, sadhu, sastra; however, the "fall-vadis" have often labeled the explanation as a "no-fall" theory. This is certainly a disingenuous tactic. Right from our first posting, we have given Vedas to explain that the jiva "falls" from devotionally nascent consciousness while within the border between the spiritual and material worlds that is the Casual Ocean after emanation from Maha-Visnu. So why have the "envy-vadis" presented our "fall" explanation as "no-fall"?

Well, we all certainly know that all the acaryas and the Vedas explain the entry of the jiva into the material world as a "fall". Certainly, Srila Prabhupada uses this term. Therefore, we must consider that the reason the "envy-vadis" prefer to stick on this false label is because by applying this term to the ontology we have presented, then this makes it appear that our ontology is different from Srila Prabhupada. Or to put it another way, by saying our version is "no-fall", we are made to appear in opposition to Srila Prabhupada's "fall-theory". Nothing could be further from the Truth.

So at this point, we must point out that our description is certainly a "fall-theory". We might call it "Fall, No Fall". The tatastha-jiva 'falls' from the Casual Ocean but there is 'no-fall' from the Supreme Abode of the Lord. Kindly, note that Krsna describes His Supreme Abode as the "param-dham" in the Gita. Certainly, the Casual Ocean is the abode of the Lord, but the Casual Ocean is not the 'Supreme Abode'. The transcendental planets are the Supreme Abode. We have no doubt that "Fall, no-Fall" is also Srila Prabhupada's theory, and in the previous posting have given all guru, sadhu, and sastra evidence accordingly. However it must be pointed out that we are still waiting on the sastra to support "fall from Goloka" from the "envy-vadis". Yet, there is not one sastric word coming forth on this topic from the "Goloka-envy-vadis".

No sastra will come, as it is certainly not Srila Prabhupada's philosophy:

    Conversation from a lecture, Caitanya-caritamrta Adi 7.108, 2.18.1967:

    • Bhaktijana: When the souls that were never conditioned at all..., do they also have the independence?
Prabhupada: Yes, but they have not misused. They know that "I am meant for Krsna's service," and they are happy in Krsna's service."

Above, Srila Prabhupada explains that no jiva falls from the Supreme Abode, because they are situated "in knowledge" and "happiness".

    • Bhaktijana: Could they ever misuse it?
Prabhupada: Yes, they can misuse it also. That power is there. Yes?

Above, Srila Prabhupada explains that the jiva retains his independence in the Supreme Abode. Note, that Srila Prabhupada does not say that they 'do' misuse their independence, rather "that power is there". It is a possibility.

    • Devotee: Well, I believe you once said that once a conditioned soul becomes perfected and gets out of the material world and he goes to Krsnaloka, there's no possibility of falling back.
Prabhupada: No! There is possibility, but he does not come. Just like after putting your hand in the fire, you never put it again if you are really intelligent. So those who are going back to Godhead, they become intelligent.

Above, Srila Prabhupada brilliantly explains that the jiva has the "possibility" of misusing "that power". However, "but, he does not come". He does not fall to the material world again. The jiva does not "misuse that power". Srila Prabhupada explains this in terms of the jiva attaining the spiritual world at this point, relevant to the particular question.

So, therefore, in the first interchange, Srila Prabhupada explains that the jivas of the spiritual world do not fall, and in the third interchange, the jivas after attaining the Supreme Abode do not fall. Why? Because, they do not "misuse" their "independence" whilst in these positions because they have "knowledge" and are "happy". Thus in a few lines Srila Prabhupada has wonderfully explained so many deep aspects of our philosophy. One of which is undoubtedly that there is "no-fall" from Goloka, even though jiva theoretically retains the power to misuse his independence. Thus, through Krsna-prema one reaches eternal perfection.

    As Srila Prabhupada declared:

    • "The conclusion is that no one falls from the spiritual world, or Vaikuntha planet, for it is the eternal abode." Srila Prabhupada, purport, Srimad-Bhagavatam. 3.16.26.

So, dear readers, don't be in doubt that you will "fall from the Supreme Abode" once you have "attained" that wondrous place of transcendental perfection, where "every step is a dance, every word is a song". You will not fall. No one falls from "Perfection". If they do fall from "Perfection", then what kind of "Perfection" is that? In fact, to "fall" from that state into abject misery in the material world could only mean that it is "Not-Perfection". So that means there is "Not-Perfection" for the jiva, even in the Supreme Abode. Therefore, the Supreme Abode is not a place of the "Highest Perfection" as the Gita declares along with all Vedas. At least from the point of view of the jivas, Goloka is a place of "Not-Perfection". This badly mistaken philosophy.

So now we can understand why this "Goloka-envy-fall-theory" is completely demoniac: It deliberately, paints a picture of "Not-Perfection" for the jiva in Goloka. It paints Goloka as a place of envy and discord. It refutes all Vedas. It suggests that the relationship between the Lord and His devotees is subject to tribulation and subject to sharp, disastrous change. This philosophy, without support from the Vedas, sadhus, and Srila Prabhupada, can only appeal to the ignorant, the spiritually untutored, the unintelligent, and the demoniac. Certainly, even though unlimited zillions and zillions of jivas are in the unlimited universes, there is not one description in the Vedas of one jiva "envy-falling-from-the-Supreme Abode".

However, the Vedas expound in the Brhad-aranyaka Upanisad, 4.3.9:

tasya va etasya purunasya dve eva sthane bhavata

idam ca paraloka-sthanam ca sandhyam trtiyam

svapna-sthanam tasmin sandhye sthane tisthan ete

ubhe sthane pasyati idam ca paraloka-sthanam ca

"The jiva has access to two places, both of which he may seek, this material world and the spiritual realm.
He is situated in svapna-sthanam, the dream-like third state, on the margin of these two worlds [the Casual Ocean]
. From that middle position he is able to see both the material and the spiritual worlds."

"Further, the following statement from the Brhad-aranyaka Upanisad, 4.3.18, describes the nature of the marginal position of the jiva:

tad yaths mahs matsya ubhe kule' nusancarati purvam ca param caivam evsyam purusa etsv ubhav antav anusancarati svapnantam ca buddhantam ca

"The symptoms of the marginal existence are like those of a huge aquatic who is capable of living on both the eastern and western sides of the river at his own will. Similarly, the jiva soul, situated within the waters of the Causal Ocean, which lies between the material and spiritual worlds, is able to reside in both the dream world of matter and the spiritual world of divine wakefulness."

To consider that the Lord's Supreme Abode is a place of "Not-Perfection" is a serious ontological mistake, and can only lead to illogical results under argumentation. It is rather like calculating 2+2=3 at the beginning of a long involved calculation. All along the line, everything will be a mistake. If we consider in our Krsna-consciousness contemplations that the Supreme Abode is a place of "envy" and "falling", then we are badly off the mark. We are certainly not contemplating the Lord's Supreme Abode correctly. So the potency of our meditation upon the Absolute Truth will be very much reduced with unfortunate results. Moreover, if we determinedly propagate this mistake amongst the neophyte aspirants, then we will incur great demerit, or perhaps more. Especially, because this mistake is clearly an offence to the Lord, His devotees, the relationship between them, and the Supreme Conscious Abode of the Lord. Therefore, it is demoniac and should be exposed for the welfare of all.

Our philosophy is summarized as inconceivable oneness and difference. It is fitting then, that when one sums up the Vedic conclusion on this particular topic, we have the summary: "Fall, No-Fall". "Fall from the Casual Ocean", yet "No-Fall from the Supreme Abode".

Yes, that's the Absolute Truth: "One and Different" and "Fall, No-Fall".

We hope this is found helpful,

    Your servant, Balavidya dasa

  12. Krsna told Uddhava:

SB 11.7.5 ( or 1.5 UG) - My dear Uddhava, you should not remain here on the earth once I have abandoned this world. My dear devotee, you are sinless, but in Kali-yuga the people will be addicted to all types of sinful activities; therefore do not stay here.

Yup time to make a quick exit...

  13.

These are excerpts from a lecture in Calcutta.

    “From Bhaktisiddhanta Sarawasi thakura

Wealth of what kind? It is wealth of Krsna-prema, i.e. causeless love for the Absolute Truth-Krsna. And for this, we should pray to Him in the same way as a Vaisnava mahajana prays, in the following lines:

    prema dhana vina vyartha daridra-jivana

dasa kari vetan more deha prema dhana

Life without Love is useless and poor they say,

Appoint me in Thy service, Oh Lord with Love as my pay.

Our prayer should be of the aforesaid nature. We naturally begin to feel dislike for everything but Krsna as soon as we feel necessity for Krsna-prema. In absence of this, other tendencies and considerations take firm hold of our mind, exhorting us to be great workers, forgetful of the main object of the Pancharatra.

    >>> Ref. VedaBase => A Lecture in Calcutta

Now, what course should we adopt, with regard to our propaganda work in England? Mahaprabhu enjoins us to proclaim His Name, throughout the length and breadth of this world-from small hamlets to big cities. Gross, worldly names are being in vogue, everywhere at present; let the Transcendental Name be henceforth proclaimed all over the world.

    >>> Ref. VedaBase => A Lecture in Calcutta

We say therefore, that the line of our propaganda work should be to publish sufficient number of pamphlets even at the cost of possible suspension of building temples. This will show to them the insignificance of discoveries of truths or discussions that have found expression in their philosophies or applied sciences, in contrast to the enormity and magnitude of the subject matter of our discussions.

So far about our propaganda work. Now, as to the manner in which that work is to be carried out. A self-conceited or vain-glorious man can never successfully carry on propaganda work. How will it be possible for him? For, the Absolute Truth never manifests Itself to a vain-glorious man, who looks upon himself as the only preacher of truths. Such a man can do no good to the world.

    >>> Ref. VedaBase => A Lecture in Calcutta

This wicked mind, which is never to be trusted, should be broom-sticked every morning with such warning as, “Be not anxious to find fault with others, or to proclaim thyself as a true, sincere, bonafide bhakta, which certainly thou art not.” In this connection, the advice of a Vaisnava Mahajana is this:

karmi-jnani micha-bhakta, na habe tate anurakta,

    suddha-bhajanete kara mana

vraja-janera yei mata, tanhe habe anugata,

    ei se param tattva dhana

Be not attached to karmis, jnanis and bhaktas false.

But pure, unalloyed bhajan you should always endorse.

Follow principles, which Vraja folk adopt,

These being valued truths to be kept aloft.

The mind is always working erroneously in looking upon this thing or that, either as good or bad.

    >>> Ref. VedaBase => A Lecture in Calcutta

There is an adage to the effect that para-carccakera gati nahi kona kale, “a man who is habituated to criticise others’ conduct will never prosper.” Let others do whatever they like, I have no concern with them. I should rather find fault with my own damned mind, and think like the Vaisnava Mahajana who sings:

amara jivan, sada pape rata, nahi punyera lesa,

    para-sukhe duhkhi, sada mithya-bhasi,

    para-duhkha sukha-kara

    Ever engaged in vicious activity,

And without the slightest trace of virtue in me,

A liar as I am, always sorry at others’ pleasures

And merry at others’ sorrows, troubles and cares.

We should always remember this song and engage our mind ceaselessly in Hari-bhajan. We should not run about attacking others with dissuading policy; such conduct behooves only deceitful persons and not preachers.
