    Chanting Defeats Death

By the grace of the Lord, if a devotee, at the time of death, can simply chant His holy names -- Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare -- simply by chanting this maha-mantra, he immediately surpasses the great ocean of the material sky and enters the spiritual sky. He never has to come back for repetition of birth and death. Simply by chanting the holy name of the Lord, one can surpass the ocean of death.

Father Hari and Mother Hara Revelation

This chanting is exactly like the genuine cry of a child for its mother. Mother Hara helps the devotee achieve the grace of the supreme father, Hari, or Krsna, and the Lord reveals Himself to the devotee who chants this mantra sincerely. No other means of spiritual realization, therefore, is as effective in this age as chanting the maha-mantra: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

“Sri Caitanya, who is Krishna Himself,

    the son of Nanda,

has saved the world by freely distributing

    His own holy name.

Go also and receive your deliverance.”

    O Lord, hearing those words,

    Bhaktivinoda has come weeping

to the soles of Your lotus feet

and tells the story of his life.

  4. Can 'Hare Krishna' chant cure depression?

KOLKATA: The global Hare Krishna sect has floated a new wing to counsel students who are depressed, demoralised and even addicted to drugs.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) sect, headquartered in West Bengal's Mayapur town, says distressed students are getting back their zest for life by chanting "Hare Krishna" and listening to regular religious discourses.

The sect's counseling centre, called the Youth Forum, is run at its premises in the city. "We started the forum a couple of months ago and the response has been tremendous," said ISKCON official Ananga Mohan Das.

The forum is now visited by about 176 students "and the number is growing by the day".

At these sessions, held every Sunday, students listen to discourses by ISKCON monks, chant hymns, meditate and discuss their problems with the monks.

"The students come from the best of colleges and universities and also from very reputed families," Das said.

Besides its endeavour with students, ISKCON is planning programmes for reformation in the state's jails.

The sect wants to conduct regular religious sessions in jails in the hope that it would awaken spirituality in convicts and make them better human beings.

The proposal, already submitted to the state government, is that ISKCON volunteers would introduce convicts to meditation and religious discourses.

ISKCON monks want to distribute Hindu religious texts such as the Bhagwad Gita and hold its readings regularly. They also want convicts to chant "Hare Krishna".

ISKCON philosophy says a convict is not to be blamed for his crime, but it is society that is responsible because it could not impart the right lessons to the sinner.

Siddha Bakula is the bhajan-kutir of Haridasa Thakura, where he chanted 300,000 names of God daily. In order to provide shade for Thakura Haridasa, Sri Chaitanya planted a toothpick used by Lord Jagannatha. All of a sudden it grew up and appeared as a great shade tree.

The devotees returned to Haridas Thakur saying, that Lord Chaitanya wanted to meet him. He replied, "If I could just get a solitary place near the temple, I could stay there and pass my time. I do not wish the servants of Lord Jagannatha to touch me. I would remain there in the garden alone. That is my desire..."

...Happy to hear this, Sri Chaitanya came personally to meet Haridas after His devotees departed for sea bathing and their residential accommodations. Sri Chaitanya took Haridas within the flower garden and there, in a very secluded place, He showed him his residence. Sri Chaitanya requested him, "Remain here and chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. I shall personally come here to meet you daily. Remain here peacefully, and look at the cakra on top of Lord Jagannatha's temple and offer obeisances. As far as your prasadam, I shall arrange to have that sent here."

Rupa Goswami recited Lalita Madhava and Vidagdha Madhava before Sri Chaitanya and His followers under the tree here. During his stay in Puri, Sanatana Goswami lived here with Haridasa Thakura. This is considered a very holy spot for the Gaudiya Vaisnavas, as this is where Haridasa Thakura left his body and where, after his departure, Sri Chaitanya carried his body while dancing in ecstasy.

Shivatsa Goswami's appreciation of Srila Prabhupada's achievement

    ---------------------

Shivatsa Goswami added to these qualities those of boldness and courage in his appreciation of Prabhupada's mission. As a Gaudiya Vaishnava himself, he admitted that,

"When I reflect on Srila Prabhupada's achievement, I become a sort of Hindu chauvinist. I am not ashamed of it. The process initiated, rather imperfectly, by Ramakrishna, Vivekananda and others was brought to its logical and ultimate end by spreading and making 'Rama' and 'Krishna' household words throughout the world. That is the greatest achievement . . . What the Muslims could do only by the tremendous sword, and the Christians could do only with great financial resources and state power, has been done by one solitary man, without any ill effects." (241-2)

What was most striking, according to Shrivatsa Goswami, was the way in which this had been achieved in a materialistic, thus hostile culture.

You have to give up your designation. “I am Hindu,” “I am Muslim,” “I am Christian,” “I am African,” “I am Indian,” “I am European,” “I am woman,” “I am man,” That requires practice. And that practice means simply by chanting, you’ll be purified. Go on chanting Hare Krsna.

You have to simply think, “I am the eternal servant of Krsna.” When you think like that then all these dirty things will automatically vanish.

(Class by Srila Prabhupada , 10/26/1975)

  9. Found this nice article by Sri Mahaksa Prabhu at Comfy.

He makes many pertinent points about the Founder-Acarya Srila Prabhupada:

    ----------------------

    guru-tattwa

    Haribol, folks.

the divine grace of Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Prabhupada is doing everything on behalf of Srila

Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur. He is never independant of his Guru

Maharaja's desire. We may say, "I am a servant of Sri Krsna", but is

this our line, is this our parampara? It may well be adhira, if not

pretense. Parampara is dasa dasa anudasa, service to the parampara

itself, there is no independance. Mistaken ideas in this regard

causes one who fails to understand "on behalf of", prone to think

that he is direct link to the Supreme Lord for everyone, thus such

capricious and arbitrary action occurs, such as the sad chain of

events we see in our history, especially mine. Abuse of authority

comes when one falsely claims to be guru without ever being disciple.

A true disciple NEVER is independant from Gurudeva, no matter how

advanced he may be. To directly witness Srila Prabhupada's attitude

in this regard, I recommend that all try to hear his classes

delivered in 1969 and 1973 on the occasion of the departure of his

    guru-maharaja.

I have always approached "Sri Rasa-Lila" chapter of the Krsna Book

with caution. I never thought I was qualified to hear, lest I

misunderstand. So I fall on my face with tears in my eyes that I am

included in this pastime by appreciation of talks between Sri

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Srila Ramananda Raya. I am overwhelmed by

the description of the relationship between Sri Madhavendra Puri and

Sri Isvara Puri. I am never left out in the cold. I approach Gauranga-

lila through the mercy of the Six Goswamis, who can be seen through

the poetry of Krsnadasa and Srila Narottamadasa Thakur, whose

sentiments are sung without omission by Srila Bhaktivinode. Srila

Prabhupada gives us the whole plate of never-ending Prasadam, the

best halavah and sweet rice, the subjhi cooked to perfection by the

most qualified brahmana. Parampara is intact due to each Sriman

    Gurudeva giving more and more.

I have read some who say Srila Prabhupada is saktivesa avatar. I say

absolutely, but if someone says he is visnu-tattwa, I take offense.

The reason being is that he always wants, as does Lord Jesus Christ

always want, us to become like them. If Lord Jesus or Srila

Prabhupada are Visnu-tattwa, such instruction becomes meaningless and

smacks of mayavada philosophy. All rasa is destroyed by such

artificial deification, for if the Son and the Father are the same,

there is no relationship, there is neither son nor father. Without

acintya-bheda-bheda-tattwa, there can be no discussion of visnu-

tattwa nor can guru-tattwa be well understood. Only adhira is evident.

Understand what is meant by diksa, a personal COMMITMENT to disciple,

know how deep his LOVE for us is. The quest for initiation, while not

disrespected by this writer, must not get in the way of what is meant

by real initiation. Initiation is not membership, it is promise to

reciprocate commitment. All I did was cause disturbance, because

those who expected me to be preceptor soon understood that I was

unwilling to COMMIT myself to them despite their lack of progress.

This is the difference between a bonafide spiritual master,

mahabhagavata, uttama-adhikari, and one who wants to be, yet falls

short. We should all be aspiring to be just like Srila Prabhupada,

and success will be when we can even forego our own spiritual life,

such as He did by leaving Vrndavandhama to come to us, and COMMIT, in

service to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga, to the suffering masses, to

engage them in this wonderful Samkirtana, to become a selfless diksa

guru and take RESPONSIBILITY for their Krsna Consciousness. In short,

we must COMMIT ourselves, in the service to Srila Prabhupada, to the

poor souls in every town and village, to give them Harinama.

The fact of the matter is this. Every one of Srila Prabhupada's

disciples, no matter what condition of life they were in, are in, or

will be in, have the eternal opportunity to follow in the footsteps

of Srila Prabhupada at any time. This does not mean imitate, but can

mean they may accept disciples and act as diksa in their own right.

At any time, we may freely choose to FOLLOW, and at that time may be

immediately cleansed of all their unwanted burdens of impious

mistakes. We MUST understand the potency of the HOLY NAMES of the

    Supreme Lord.

To accept the devotional service to act as diksa is not an ego trip,

nor is it a cool thing to do. It is actually the most difficult

service one may perform, and is done in extreme humility, and ALL who

accept this service in such a state of mind deserve all respect from

the assembled devotees. Such a person promises Sri Krsna to forego

his rewards for his Krsna Consciousness until all his disciples

become pure Vaisnavas, thus the warning against accepting disciples

is contained in Shastra. Srila Prabhupada is very clear in this

matter, he is very clear expressing his desire to reclaim his fallen

disciples, he is very clear in fulfilling his promise to appear to us

eternally in his instructions, coming to us often in dreams even

while we are acting so demoniac. I myself am living proof of this

potency of my Guru Maharaja, because I always drift away, but he

    never lets me go.

His disciples, who, on the strength of the teachings of Sri Chaitanya

Mahaprabhu contained in His Sri Siksastakam, decide to take on

this "HEAVY" bhakti yoga practice of becoming Diksa and continuing

the pure line of Parampara, deserve nothing but my heartfelt

obiesancies. I will not accept this service at this time, I have too

many flaws, and even though approached, I must defer. I can and do

accept the position of siksa because that is MY PROMISE to my Diksa,

as well as an act of respect to all my siksas.

There is nothing we have done to warrant our acceptance by Sri

Gurudeva, thus the words "causeless mercy" are used to describe

initial linkage. We walk on the streets of Armageddion and we see one

who may be a friend. He exhibits symptoms of Vaisnava, and we are

attracted. He gives, on behalf of his Gurudeva, raja-vidya. We take a

little, our taste increases, GRADUAL PROCESS, (How many times does

this phrase appear in Srila Prabhupada's books?), Who is this person?

He loves Sri Krsna. He gives Sri Krsna. He is Sri Gurudeva. Siksa.

His teachings ultimately lead us to the feet of his Gurudeva, who

leads us to the feet of his Gurudeva, and so on. In the event that

Siksaguru's Gurudeva is still serving on this plane, Siksa will

arrange for one to accept initiation from His Gurudeva. If siksa guru

is in separation from his diksaguru due to maha-samadhi, in service

to Parampara, will become Diksa himself, or may not choose to

formalize relationship via initiation. This is service, perfromed

without false prestiege or desire for adulation. To accept the order

to be Guru means to give the order, and one should not think that

Diksa and Siksa are different, in purpose. Both are directly engaged

by Sesa Balarama, Sri Chaitagurudeva. Never has a bonafide guru

existed without direct empowerment by this process. As he tastes, he

    distributes.

"You are the seasoning of the world, the residents can only benefit

from your presense. If you lose your flavor, you are rejected, thrown

away and trampled underfoot, and considered worthless." Lord Jesus

Christ is here describing the qualities of one who has accepted the

order. Those who cannot forget Gurudeva, even though they have often

tried, are the world's seasoning, and have every ability to expand

this great movement that can save the poor sleepers. What more

guruship could any of us desire.

  10. Woman gives herself a Caesarean

A woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy after performing a Caesarean on herself with a kitchen knife.

It is thought to be the first known case of a self-inflicted Caesarean in which both the mother and baby survived.

The unidentified 40-year-old, lived in a rural area of Mexico without electricity or running water, and eight hours from the nearest hospital.

The International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics reported the case.

The woman performed the operation when she could not deliver the baby naturally, having lost a previous baby due to labour complications.

    Hard liquor

Dr R Valle, of the Dr Manuel Velasco Suarez Hospital in San Pablo, Mexico, said: "She took three small glasses of hard liquor and, using a kitchen knife, sliced her abdomen in three attempts and delivered a male infant that breathed immediately and cried."

This case represents an unusual and extraordinary decision by a woman in labour

    Dr R Valle

Before losing consciousness, the woman told one of her children to call a local nurse for help.

After the nurse stitched the wound with a sewing needle and cotton thread, the mother and baby were transferred and treated by Dr Valle and his colleagues at the nearest hospital.

"This case represents an unusual and extraordinary decision by a woman in labour who, unable to deliver herself spontaneously, and with no medical help or resources, decided to perform a caesarean section upon herself," he said.

He added that a mother's instinct to save her child can move a woman to perform extraordinary acts but said it would not have been necessary if adequate medical care had been available.

    by Raghunath Das Goswami

    (1)

Radha’s body is the embodiment of true love conceived in the most resplendent cintamani gem, anointed with the sweet-smelling love of her girlfriends, and shining with an inconceivable lustrous splendor.

    (2)

She bathes in waves of the nectar of compassion, a shower of the nectar of youthfulness, and a flood of the nectar of charming loveliness, so that the Goddess of Fortune languorous in lassitude at her side.

    (3)

Her graceful form is hidden by the silken garment of shyness, decorated with the kunkuma of graceful beauty, and dappled with the black musk of erotic sentiments for Shyamasundar.

    (4)

She puts on her natural ornaments, fashioned from the best nine jewels: shivering, tears in the eyes, horripilation, becoming stunned, perspiration, faltering of the voice, blushing, madness and inertness.

    (5)

She is garlanded with the flowers of wonderful virtues, such as her sweet-tongued speech. She is adorned with perfumed powders smelling of her sometimes sober and sometimes restless moods.

    (6)

Her imperceptible amour-propre is concealed within the coils of her hair. Her forehead is brightened with the tilak of her immense good fortune.

    (7)

Hearing Krishna's name and qualities are the ornaments

swinging in splendor and jubilation from her ears.

The reddish color of her lips is produced from the betel nut of her obsession for Krishna.

    (8)

The black collyrium on her eyes is the crookedness of her loving affairs. Her body is perfumed by the camphor of her sweet smile, the joking words spilling from her.

    (9)

Within the inner apartments of her bodily fragrance is a bed of pride upon which she sits, bemused, while wearing the restless necklace of prema-vaicittya, the love-in-separation felt even in union.

    (10)

Her breasts are concealed, bound with a bodice of wounded vanity. The sounds of her lute, her fame and beauty, dry up the faces and hearts of her competitors in love.

    (11)

She leans with her lotus hands on the shoulder of her friend, adolescent youth personified, just before beginning to distribute the mead of intoxicating love for Krishna,

herself the personification of the erotic sentiment.

    (12)

Please bring back to life this very somber nobody, who is bowing down before you with straw between his teeth,

by sprinkling him with the nectar of your servitorship.

    (13)

Oh Gandharvika! A truly compassionate person will not reject even a rascal if he is surrendered to him. Therefore please, never abandon this person who is similarly surrendered to you.

    (14)

Whoever recites this hymn entitled "the nectar of the lotus of love," produced of her mercy, will surely attain service at her lotus feet.

    . Sri Gita Jayanti

(Appearance and Worship of the Bhagavad Gita)

    Sri Gita-Mahatmya

    (verses 1 - 7)

    1) gita sastram idam punyam, yah pathet prayatah puman

visnoh padam avapnoti, bhaya sokadi varjitah

One who, with a regulated mind, recites with devotion this Bhagavad-gita scripture which is the bestower of all virtue, will attain to a holy abode such as Vaikuntha, the residence of Lord Visnu, which is always free from the mundane qualities based on fear and lamentation.

    2) gitadhyayana-silasya, pranayama parasya ca

naiva santi hi papani, purva janma krtani ca

For a self-controlled person who seriously studies this Bhagavad-gita scripture, not a trace of sin remains - either from the previous or present life - since all his sins are burnt to ashes.

    3) malanir mocanam pumsam, jala-snanam dine dine

    sakrd-gitambhasi snanam, samsara-mala-nasanam

As a person bathes every day with water to cleanse his body, similarly, by bathing only once in the waters of the Bhagavad-gita, all the dirt of painful material existence is dissolved. That is, by devotedly reading the Gita only once, all material contamination is vanquished.

    4) gita sugita kartavya, kim anyaih sastra vistaraih

    ya svayam padmanabhasya, mukha-padmad vinihsrta

One should always very nicely sing with devotion this Gita, the divine song which has emanated from the holy lotus mouth of the Supreme Lord Himself, Lord Sri Krsna. What then is the benefit of studying many other scriptures?

    5) bharatamrta sarvasvam, visnor vaktrad-vinihsrtam

gita-gangodakam pitva, punar janma na vidyate

By dringing the Ganges waters of the Gita, the divine quintessence of the Mahabharata emanating from the lotus mouth of Lord Visnu, one will never take rebirth in the material world again. In other words, by devotionally reciting the Gita, the cycle of birth and death is terminated.

    6) sarvopanisado gavo, dogdha gopala-nandanah

partho vatsah sudhir bhokta, dugdham gitamrtam mahat

All the Upanisads are like a cow, and the milker of the cow is Sri Krsna, the son of Nanda. Arjuna is the calf, the beautiful nectar of the Gita is the milk, and the fortunate devotees of fine theistic intellect are the drinkers and enjoyers of that milk.

    7) ekam sastram devaki-putra-gitam, eko devo devaki-putra eva

eko mantras tasya namani yani, karmapy ekam tasya devasya seva

There need only be one holy scripture - the divine Gita sung by Lord Sri Krsna; only one worshipable Lord - Lord Sri Krsna; only one mantra - His holy names; and only one duty -devotional service unto that supreme worshipable Lord, Sri Krsna.
