I thought I read somewhere in Prabhupadas books that if you are surrounded by psuedodevotees it is best to quietly keep executing devotional service and you can take direct shelter of the acaryas words. My understanding is that Vaisnavas are tolerant as trees. Obviously if you see a real criminal action it is probably best to notify the police and hopefully they can stop it. I often pray for the Kalki-avatar to appear and destroy all the demonic activity on the Earth but I realize that is not going to happen soon.

I like this prayer from Saint Francis of Assisi:

"Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

the courage to change the things I can, and

the wisdom to know the difference."

"Off with your heads, you demons!"

  2. Instructive struggle between the atheist and the theist. This story of Prahlad Maharaj is eternally true. There is always a struggle between the atheist and the theist. If a person becomes God conscious, Krsna conscious, so he will find many enemies because the world is full of demons. What to speak of the devotee of Krsna, even Krsna, when He personally came, He had to kill so many demons.

  3.

I recall reading Prabhupada during his last years once said or wrote "demons have entered the Krishna consciousness movement".

Perhaps he was helpless at that point to do something about it. But since he communicated this discovery, why did this not serve as a wakeup call for others?

    Cheers

I am intolerant, supremacist, a bully and violent.:uzi: I am highly inflammable and can explode if I am not treated preferentially and with respect. :burn: At the same time, I abuse others and violate the rights of people of other faiths. :kick: This makes me a demon.

Now the real miracle would be to turn me into a devotee. The guru can perform such a miracle; I've simply have to give him my heart so that he can change me! :)

  4. non-physical -meta-physical- super-spiritual

there is nothing material about Guru

he is coming in from Krsna's abode

Guru is a transmitter of spiritual sound coming from Krsnaloka

    eternal-immortal- forever - anti-material

Guru is super-imposed on the material realm by Krsna' s own internal potency thus making the conditioned souls aware by His Divine Grace .

the unlimited sphere of KRSNA's internal energy bhakti -devi is revealed by Guru, otherwise the conditioned soul has no access to KRSNA or KRSNA's potency, ie. bhakti.

    Vyasa-Puja Offering to Srila Prabhupada--

Saved by His Sanjivani Merciful Glance

There is a nice similarity here, Srila Prabhupada, with your wonderful pastimes on earth. You also plunged into the poisonous waters of our American lifestyle, both figuratively and literally.

    Dear Srila Prabhupada,

Please accept my obeisances at your lotus feet. All glories to your Divine Grace.

By your mercy, I've been blessed with a fascination for the pastime of Lord Krishna's dancing on the hoods of the Kaliya Serpent. This pastime is a multi-faceted jewel of Sri Krishna's divine eternal lila, and has many spiritual instructions in the narrative, which are explained to us by you, Srila Prabhupada, and the previous acaryas. It appears to us that there are many similarities in your earthy pastimes that we can compare to this Kaliya pastime.

Let us all glorify our Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada with several comparisons to this pastime of Lord Krishna.

As the pastime goes, first the cowherd boys drank the waters of the Yamuna, which were poisonous due to Kaliya's venom, and they fell down, apparently dead. Then Krishna, Who is the life of all that lives, cast His merciful glance upon them, and they stood up and looked at each other in astonishment. They knew that it was Krishna's sanjivani-rasa glance, which had saved them.

    Prabhupada_smile.jpg

Just as Lord Krishna revived the cowherd boys with His glance, so did you deliver your sanjivani-rasa glance to our western world, dear Srila Prabhupada, you also raised us from the dead with your merciful glance. We are like walking zombies, the living dead. We were corpses barely animated by the strings of maya, completely immersed in the network of decadent American culture. We were entrapped in tamasic obsessions of drugs and sex, and enchanted by a hypnotic music, which glorified such activities.

Like the cowherd boys in Krishna's pastime, we also rose up from our deathlike trance and looked at each other in astonishment, knowing that you had revived us from our comatose condition and had raised us up to your blissful transcendental devotional service to Lord Krishna.

    www.prabhupadaconnect.comblissful_smile_2.jpg

After reviving the cowherd boys, Lord Sri Krishna climbed into a big kadamba tree, and tightened his belt, and then jumped into the water with great force. The acaryas compares this to a kingfisher who dives into a river to catch his prey. The force of His plunge was so deep and strong, that it appeared that He penetrated the Patala region of the universe. His forceful plunge pushed the waters of the Yamuna over her banks, creating high waves, which overflooded her banks for one hundred yards, as if something very large had fallen into her water.

There is a nice similarity here, Srila Prabhupada, with your wonderful pastimes on earth. You also plunged into the poisonous waters of our American lifestyle, both figuratively and literally. In a literal sense, you penetrated the vast waters of the Atlantic ocean, aboard the Jaladuta, and entered our Patala-like region of the universe.

You then created huge waves of the transcendental sound of Krishna's holy names, which roared like tidal waves across the planet, overflowing all shores with krsna-prema. You broadcasted the transcendental holy names of Lord Krishna, and caused the holy names to overflow our earthly embankments in the forms of your transcendental books and your nectarean bhajans and kirtans, and your recorded discourses on the science of Krishna consciousness.

By His powerful dive into the Yamuna's waters, Lord Krishna created great waves, and the deadly poison rose up into a mass of foam, which rode the crests of these waves. Lord Krishna then sported in the lake like a lordly elephant, and simply by splashing His hands and arms, and swirling His mighty arms, He produced wonderful musical sounds within the water.

Lord Krishna also swirled His mighty arms, causing the poisonous water to burst into flames. Similarly, you too, Srila Prabhupada, caused a great commotion in this kingdom of maya, conquering all the mundane philosophers and religionists, and at the same time you playfully created wonderful musical sounds with the expertise of your kartala, mrdanga and harmonium playing, and your blissful kirtans, which began in Tompkins Square park in New York city.

Lord Sri Krishna appeared very beautiful and delicate in the waters of the Yamuna. The Kaliya serpent beheld Krishna's unparalleled beauty, yet he was so envious that he bit Sri Krishna on His chest and enveloped Krishna his mighty coils. Then the inhabitants of Vrndavana saw their Lord Krishna trapped in Kaliya's coils, and they experienced great lamentation on the banks of the Yamuna. They fell to the ground just like trees that had been cut at the root. Lord Krishna could have escaped at any time, but He wanted to see the great love of His devotees for Himself.

Similarly, Srila Prabhupada, you also displayed your beautiful transcendental form of Lord Krishna's pure devotee, your form shining with a golden lustrous complexion, which makes us think of the golden form of Lord Caitanya. There were many materialists who are greatly charmed by your transcendental form, and they received great benefit from your darsana. Others were attracted to your form, but they were so envious that they tried to hamper your movement.

You came as an elderly gentleman and had some great difficulties aboard the ship Jaladuta. And later in NY, you had a similar difficulty, and the doctors had said it was a mild heart attack. You said that your devotees had saved you by chanting the Nrsimadeva mantra.

Then you had to go back to India, and Jayananda and all the devotees were in great anxiety. They were crying, thinking you might not return. This was ultimately a great impetuous for the devotees to increase their love for you. It seems that Lord Krishna is always putting devotees into anxiety for the safety of His pure devotee, or for the safety of Lord Caitanya's sankirtan movement.

Dear Srila Prabhupada, when you had a heart attack on the Jaladhuta, we are sure that the demigods and previous acharyas were looking down upon this scene with great anxiety, greatly lamenting that you might be thwarted in your great mission. On the night of the second day, Lord Sri Krishna appeared to you in a dream, in His many forms, such as Lord Varaha and Lord Nrsimha, and Lord Krishna told you not to fear, and said, "Don't worry, I'm rowing your boat." Thus Lord Krishna showed you that He was always protecting His great devotee, because of your exclusive dependence upon His mercy.

Now, in our present situation, we also think of the pastime of Lord Krishna being enwrapped in Kaliya's coils as being similar to your anxiety for your Krishna consciousness movement. Sometimes it seems that your movement is being trapped in the coils of so many tentacles of the material energy, and we are standing on the banks in great lamentation and in acute distress, because we are in fear for your movement. You expressed such concerns when you wrote the following in your Bhaktivedanta Purport for Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.3.23:

"Although Krsna cannot be killed, Vasudeva, as the father of Krsna, was trembling because in affection he thought that Kamsa would immediately come and kill his son. Similarly, although the Krsna consciousness movement and Krsna are not different and no asuras can check it, we are afraid that at any moment the asuras can stop this movement in any part of the world."

So similarly, we are sometimes in fear of the many tentacles of material energy, which seem to envelope your glorious movement, and we fall on the banks of lamentation and anxiety for the safety of your movement. But, just as Lord Balarama knew that Krishna could not die, and so you, too, Srila Prabhupada, you knew that this movement cannot be checked from the outside, and yet you were fearful that the danger may come from within, by your disciples not working in cooperation. That is why you said- "How much you love me will be demonstrated by how you cooperate after I leave."

Then Lord Sri Krishna saw that His devotees were too much in lamentation and so He decided to dance on the heads of the Kaliya serpent. It is seen that Kaliya was the personification of false ego, and Lord Krishna displayed His artistic expertise by dancing on the unsteady moving surfaces of Kaliya's heads, and Krishna shows the world how He pushes down the false ego of all materialists. Ultimately all beings must all bow down their heads to Lord Krishna, especially in Krishna's form of time, as the stubborn egotists must bow down their arrogant heads to the certainty of death. The difference with the devotees bowing down and the non-devotees bowing down is that devotees lovingly bow down to Lord Krishna in devotion and then go back to godhead.

Srila Prabhupada, you showed a similar pastime to the world, when you danced so artistically upon the arrogant heads of so many philosophers and religionists and decadent leaders of different countries. You smashed their egotistical pride, you annihilated their bogus philosophies, and yet you danced so nicely and attractively upon their heads, so that they did not feel devastation and pain. They saw how pathetic their plans were--next to the philosophy of Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam. They were charmed by your irresistible personality, and they came away from your chastisement with fond memories of your association.

We, the followers of your Divine Grace, will sometimes detect the rising of the ugly heads of false ego within your movement, and we too, sometimes try to tap dance on the heads of false ego of other prabhus, only to find that our own false ego is much larger.

We pray to heed your instructions and try to cooperate to push on your movement, and not enlarge our own false ego Kaliya heads, and thus divide your movement.

We pray that we dance on our own head with boots, so as to reduce our false ego into our real spiritual ego, service to you and Lord Sri Krishna.

We pray to practice tolerance and give all respect to other devotees.

Jai Srila Prabhupada, all glories to your Divine Grace!

    Your worthless servant, Vishoka dasa

    Three myths about world hunger

What do you do when someone comes out with a well-intentioned but misguided comment about the starving? You can sit in silence, fuming. Or you can do your best to help them understand the forces that leave people hungry.

    <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=7 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top align=middle width=175>overpop.gif

    overpop2.gif

    </TD><TD>

    Myth one:

    OVERPOPULATION

Actually there is plenty of food in the world. Production of cereals (wheat, rice, millet etc) last year reached 1799.2 million tons, enough to offer everyone in the world well over the recommended minimum of 2.500 calories per adult per day. And that is before you’ve even begun to count the calories in vegetables, nuts, pulses, root crops and grass-fed (as opposed to grain-fed) meat.

    So what’s the problem?

The problem is the distribution of that food, both within countries and between rich and poor worlds. People like us in the developed nations eat much more than we need.

Americans represent only six per cent of the world’s population, yet they consume 35 per cent of the world’s resources - the same as the entire developing world. So is the real world population problem that there are too many Americans?

But Western countries have enough land to support their populations - Third World countries don’t.

Western countries have enough money to support their populations. There’s little relationship between hunger and the availability of land. Holland has 1.117 people per square mile and Bolivia (just 12, yet the Dutch are one of the best-fed people in the world and the Bolivian poor among the world’s most undernourished. We think of India as overpopulated yet it has 568 people per square mile, less than Britain’s 583. And Africa may have the world’s greatest food problem - but it isn’t for the lack of land. At the moment only a quarter of Africa’s potential arable land is being cultivated.

But doesn’t Africa have the world’s fastest population growth?

Yes, and no one is saying they shouldn’t be concerned about that. Contraception should be freely available to everyone who wants it. But people are only likely to use it when their poverty is relieved. When one in four children dies and more hands are needed to help in the fields, children become an economic necessity. The rich world’s population growth slowed when standards of living improved - before the advent of reliable contraception.

    weath2.gif

    </TD><TD>

    Myth two:

    THE WEATHER

The weather does not cause famines - people do. Earthquakes and floods, droughts and cyclones may be ‘natural disasters’ but humans decide who will suffer from them. When the recent cyclone hit Bangladesh, for instance, it was only the poor that died. Only the poor were desperate enough for land to make the dangerous move onto the new islands that appear every year in the Bay of Bengal. Red Cross statistics show that, in high-income countries, the number of people killed per disaster is under ten per cent of that killed in low-income countries.

That’s all very well, but people are dying in Africa now because it hasn’t rained.

No. they’re dying because they’re poor. Farmers starved in US droughts in the 189Os and 1910 but they don’t starve when drought hits now; Saudi Arabia has greened part of its desert to make itself self-sufficient in wheat. So it is clearly money that counts.

The climate in Africa may be changing - we don’t know yet. But what we do know is that more people are dying in droughts than ever before - an average of 23,110 people per year died in droughts in the 1970s. compared with only 1,010 per year in the 1960s.

This is partly explained by the increased frequency of droughts - the number grew from 5.2 droughts per year in the world in the 1 960s to 9.7 per year in the 1 970s. But the reason so many more die in each drought is that people are being pushed into poverty - the weather simply tips them over the brink.

    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>blackblock.gif

    <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=7 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top align=middle width=175>science.gif

    scie2.gif

    </TD><TD>

    Myth Three:

    SCIENCE

We’d all like to think that scientific progress could cure our ills. And solving the world’s food problem might seem easy compared with sending rockets to Venus.

But science’s solution to global hunger – the Green Revolution – has been no solution at all. In fact in some places it has made the gulf between rich and poor wider.

How can that be? The Green Revolution introduced seeds that yielded bigger crops

Yes, but high-yield seeds only work if they’re in laboratory-like conditions. They need artificial fertilizer and an irrigation system that’s beyond the means of a small farmer.

Even so, more food is grown and that must be good for everyone.

Not necessarily. Take two farmers one with barely enough land to eke out a living, while the other is rich in land and capital. Both are persuaded of the value of high-yield seeds. But the first has no money for the fertilizer the new seeds need, and is too poor for the bank to offer a loan. So while the large farmer has a bumper harvest, the small one grows the same of less than usual – and has to sell at a lower price due to the market glut. Eventually the poor farmer will have to sell out to the rich to make ends meet.

A neat story, but you can’t deny that science has turned down India from a basket-case into a country that can feed itself.

It’s true that India, once the symbol of famine, is now a net food exporter. And that must be good – it has been freed from the draining indignity of food aid and imports. But no-one would deny that poor Indians are still hungry. When new agricultural techniques are injected into an unequal society then the gap between rich and poor widens – even is more food is grown.

  7. Srila Prabhupada on National Disasters

'We are always in the ugly reality,' Prabhupada said, '-- twenty-four hours a day. Suppose there is no blackout? Still, if you go in the street, there is no guarantee that you will get home. In this way, you are always in the ugly reality. Why do you say only this blackout? This is just one of the features of this ugly reality. That's all.'

    -----------

"Blackout! Blackout!" cried the reporter and others in the house. War between Pakistan and India had been imminent for weeks, and air raid drills and warnings were now commonplace in Delhi.

"Sir" -- the reporter spoke tensely in the darkened room -- "this is the presence of reality. We are being threatened by this fight with Pakistan. The siren is the ugly reality coming for us."

Reporter: "Yes, but at the moment..."

Prabhupada: "You do not realize that you are in ugly reality twenty-four hours a day? Padam padam yad vipadam. There is danger at every step."

Reporter: "I know, sir, but this is collective, national danger. Have you anything to offer us as a remedy?"

Prabhupada: "Krsna consciousness is our only remedy. Take to this process, and you will be happy."

Reporter: "Sir, I think someone should go to the Yahya Khan [the president of Pakistan]."

Prabhupada: "What benefit will you derive by going to Yahya Khan?"

Reporter: "Someone is out to kill me."

Prabhupada: "But suppose Yahya Khan does not kill you? Will you be safe? Then what is the use to go to Yahya Khan? You will die today or tomorrow. If you want to save yourself, then go to Krsna. That is our proposition. Even if you go to Yahya Khan, and he does not fight, then you mean to say that you will live forever? What is the use of flattering Yahya Khan? Flatter Krsna, so that you may be saved perpetually. Why don't you do that?"

Reporter: "I was only thinking in terms of collective security. I can see your point..."

Prabhupada: "You should know that you are always in danger."

Reporter: "Yes, sir, we agree. The late Einstein said the same thing..."

Prabhupada: "That is our position, and Krsna says, "I will save you.' Therefore, let us go to Krsna. Why go to Yahya Khan?"

Reporter: "Simply because he is disturbing us, that's all."

Prabhupada: "Your mind is always disturbing you all the time, because it is always with you. Your body is always with you. Are you not suffering from bodily pains? Why don't you go to Yahya Khan to cure your pains? You are always in danger. Why don't you realize that?"

  8. We must hear from the mouth of a pure devotee

    SB 4.20.26 PURPORT:

His voice [the pure devotee] is spiritually very powerful because it touches the particles of saffron dust on the lotus feet of the Lord.

The transcendental vibration from the mouth of a pure devotee is so powerful that it can revive the living entity's memory of his eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

In our material existence, under the influence of illusory maya, we have almost forgotten our eternal relationship with the Lord, exactly like a man sleeping very deeply who forgets his duties. In the Vedas it is said that every one of us is sleeping under the influence of maya.

We must get up from this slumber and engage in the right service, for thus we can properly utilize the facility of this human form of life. As expressed in a song by Thakura Bhaktivinoda, Lord Caitanya says, jiva jaga, jiva jaga. The Lord asks every sleeping living entity to get up and engage in devotional service so that his mission in this human form of life may be fulfilled.

This awakening voice comes through the mouth of a pure devotee.

A pure devotee always engages in the service of the Lord, taking shelter of His lotus feet, and therefore he has a direct connection with the saffron mercy-particles that are strewn over the lotus feet of the Lord. Although when a pure devotee speaks the articulation of his voice may resemble the sound of this material sky, the voice is spiritually very powerful because it touches the particles of saffron dust on the lotus feet of the Lord.

As soon as a sleeping living entity hears the powerful voice emanating from the mouth of a pure devotee, he immediately remembers his eternal relationship with the Lord, although up until that moment he had forgotten everything. For a conditioned soul, therefore, it is very important to hear from the mouth of a pure devotee, who is fully surrendered to the lotus feet of the Lord without any material desire, speculative knowledge or contamination of the modes of material nature.

Every one of us is kuyogi because we have engaged in the service of this material world, forgetting our eternal relationship with the Lord as His eternal loving servants. It is our duty to rise from the kuyoga platform to become suyogis, perfect mystics.

The process of hearing from a pure devotee is recommended in all Vedic scriptures, especially by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. One may stay in his position of life -- it does not matter what it is -- but if one hears from the mouth of a pure devotee, he gradually comes to the understanding of his relationship with the Lord and thus engages in His loving service, and his life becomes completely perfect. Therefore, this process of hearing from the mouth of a pure devotee is very important for making progress in the line of spiritual understanding.

  9. <!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: navbar_link -->Is A Physically Present Spiritual Master Required?

Absolutely, without which you actually have no direct accesss to KRSNA, Who is only realized through pure spiritual sound vibration emanating from the pure devotee Guru's lips.

That is a fact: without Guru in a pure spiritual form that you can realize KRSNA , the Supreme Pure Spiritual Person will never manifest in your heart, life and conciousness. The Guru is always fully spiritual; his so-called physical form is in fact non-material.

The spoken words emanating from his lips churned from his pure heart and conciousness as spiritual sound coming from the Lord's own abode descending to this world through your ear and heart and thereby igniting a total conflagration in your budding KRSNA Consciousness.

    Inmate Sues for Prasadam

    •

In response to a law suit citing obstruction of religious practice, the Arizona attorney general has requested the Tucson Iskcon temple and Govinda's Natural Foods Restaurant to provide three meals a day for inmate Jeff Walls, a Hare Krishna devotee in Federal Prison.

    •

Walls told the state that eating the prison food violated his religious practice of only eating sanctified food prepared in a clean, meat free kitchen by a Brahman with spiritual consciousness.

    •

The attorney generals office is negotiating with temple president Sandamini devi to provide those meals.

    •

Since the prison is over an hour away, the prasad meals would be kept frozen and picked up on a bi-weekly basis for distribution.

    •

The state is mandated to provide prisoners with meals according to their religious beliefs such as kosher and halal meals, so why not prasad? This may be the first in a series of sanctified meals demanded by Krishna devotees imprisoned all over the country who are concerned about their upliftment and purification.

    •

Undoubtedly this would be very pleasing to Srila Prabhupada and Krishna.
