  1. Hare Krishna Can anyone tell me the Ekadasi dates for the UK for January please ? I usually look at a calendar on the Iskcon.org.uk website but this has not been updated yet. Also, can anyone tell me what caranamrita is? My humble obeisances Mark
  2. Hare Krishna Please excuse my ignorance but what are the words of the Gayatri mantra, and their meaning? My regards and obeisances to all devotees Mark
  3. Hare Krishna My humble obeisances to Srila Prabhupda and all the devotees. Thank you for your responses. One thing that bothers me when gardening is that when I dig in the soil I invariably chop worms in half.. there is no intent to harm them on my part, as they are a gardeners best friend, and the living world could not exist without them, but I still feel bad about it.. Does hurting or killing a living creature unintentially as one go's about ones daily business give one bad karma? What should I do ? Keep chanting I guess! Haribol !
  4. Hare Krishna! Many thanks for you responses, my humble obeisances. I have opted for cremation, and asked that my ashes be scattered in the ganges, as I am not much of a devotee and certainly not very pure, as was Srila Prabhupda. Thank you for the help.
  5. Hare Krishna. My humble obeisances to all devotees. I am in the process of making a will, and I would appreciate a little advice. I have been asked to specify my burial wishes ie do I want to be cremated or buried etc, and was wondering what to specify - should I choose cremation ? I was considering specifying a 'green' burial to avoid adding to global warming upon my demise, but from the little I know of vedic culture, it seems cremation is preferred. Also, is there anything else that I need specify ? It obviously matters immensely how one should live ones life, but does it matter what happens to your physical remains once you have died I am rather ignorant of vedic culture but have been trying to make a little progress in devotional service to God, and would like to make a good decision. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Haribol! Mark
  6. Please accept my most humble obeisances. Over the last few weeks, I had the wonderful opportunity to serve the nice devotees at Rupanuga Vedic College by constructing the new website for them. Today, we launched the site and it explains in nice detail the curriculum as well as other information about the Temple. I'd just like to invite you all to the new site to see what kind of devotional community we have here in Kansas City. The URL is: http://www.rvc.edu Thanks and Hare Krsna! Your Servant, Bhakta Mark
  7. It's not what goes into a person's mouth that makes him ritually unclean; rather, what comes out of it makes him unclean. Matthew 15:11
  8. If I'm not mistaken, Rama hunted as well as Arjuna in the Mahabharata. Is this right?
  9. I think it depends on the willingness of the disciple and the qualification of the guru.
  10. I'm having a difficult time remembering exactly how that particular quote was phrased by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Could somebody who remembers this and knows to which quote I'm referring please fill in the blanks? Religion without philosophy is____________ Philosophy without religion is ____________ Thanks you.
  11. Thank you for sharing that with us. I don't know how many times I've heard Srila Prabhupada say, "sit properly" in the japa tape and I never knew who he was referring to. My prayers are with him also but fortunately he was chanting while he passed. Anyone who, at the end of life, quits his body remembering Me, attains immediately to My nature, and there is no doubt of this. Bhagavadgita Chpt 8 txt 5 Sincerely, Mark
  12. Reading through this thread I can see how one who is new to Krsna Consciousness can really be turned off by it all. It seems like so many of you just like to bicker and throw your egos around. It also seems like some of you are so angry. Why have so many people turned the KC movement into something political? So much for transcendental fellowship. I give up.
  13. Hey Joy! It worked this time. I had to do it on a different computer though. For some reason, my desktop computer was only downloading to the 4th verse 2nd chapter. When I got it saved on my hard drive I just dragged it into MS Word and changed the font to Balaram. Thank you so much for all your help. Mark
  14. Hi Joy. Thank you for your help. I tried to download canto 11 but it only went to chapter 2 text 4. I got the same thing when i tried opening it from the webpage. Any suggestions. Mark
  15. Hey Jakki. I'm sure you will get a lot of help on this forum. The WWW has tons of information out there about Hinduism. Let me suggest a couple of sites: http://www.vedanta.org http://www.iskcon.org ISKCON, in my opinion, is kind of shady. They started out with wonderful intentions but after the founder died in the late 70s things got a little crazy. They are still, however, a wonderful resource to use in your spiritual search. The founder, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, translated many ancient religious texts into English and they are all still available through a branch of ISKCON called the BBT (Bhativedanta Book Trust). Just look up "Prabhupada" on Ebay and I'm sure you'll pull some of his books up. One book that is essential is called the Bhagavadgita. Prabhupada translated this one also but there are other translations too. I recommend either his translation or one which I highly enjoyed called "The Bhagavadgita, Song of God" by swami Prabhavananda. There are also websites that have the Bhagavadgita online. Here is the address to one of them: http://www.hare-krishna.org/srila-prabhupada-books.htm So start reading the Bhagavadgita and that will give you a nice introduction to the world of Indian philosophy and religion. Good luck! Sincerely, Mark
  16. Yes, I want to downlaod it. Sorry, I probably didn't make myself clear. I was hoping to download the 11th canto but the website you gave stops at the 10th for some reason. Thank you, however, for that link. Would you happen to know if there is another place to download the 11th canto? Thank you. YS, Mark
  17. Somewhere online there is a database of many of Srila Prabhupada's books. I'm looking for the Srimad Bhagavatam, in particular. Anybody know where I can find it? Thank you. YS, Mark

  19. Hi Ram. I have to say, that's a great analogy. I have, in fact, been thinking about visiting the Rupanuga Vedic College here in Kansas City. It's about thirty miles from where I live. I have apprehensions though about whether or not I'll fit in or be accepted. I should just bite the bullet and drive down there and see for myself. By the way, you mentioned a Govindas Restaurant in your post; do they have one in Kansas City. Thanks. Hare Krsna. Your Servant, Mark
  20. Well put, Theist. I've certainly come across a couple of interpretations of the Gita that were quite a bit different than As It Is. One in particular took the opposite view of Srila Prabhupada and explained it in a very impersonalist way which I thought was contradictory to what Krsna was teaching Arjuna. 21. Theist wrote: "Mixing in other translations will only lead to confusion." Not necessarily. I know this is the major concesus among many of those who read Srila Prabhupada exclusively. But to rely only on one source is a narrow way to approach something new. Better, in my humble opinion, to see what else is out there and decide, after taking in all the sources, on a conclusion. It didn't confuse me at all. Like I said before it helped me to understand better where Srila Prabhupada was coming from, so to speak. For example, I read a condensed version of the Mahabharata and it helped so much when I picked up the first canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam. When I first picked up the Srimad Bhagavatam I had no idea what was going on. The Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 1, is really a continuation of the Mahabharata. At least that what it seemed like to me. But I digress. The point I'm trying to make is that confusion isn't always the result of cross-referencing. Maybe it is sometimes, but not always. Anyway, take care, Theist. I hope I didn't offend you in any way. If so, that certainly was not my intention. Hare Krsna. Your Servant, Mark
  22. Hey Debbie. I can totally understand where you're coming from. When I first got Bhagavadgita As It Is, it was kind of hard to follow because of all the purports. They are such an excellent resource but they also interrupt the flow of the story. I looked around for different editions and translations and found an excellent one that is so easy to read. Once you read that and get the main idea of the gita then you can cross reference it with Prabhupada's. The book I'm referring to is called The Song of God, Bhagavad-Gita translated by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood. It was such a catapult to get me more into reading Srila Prabhupada. I'm sure you can get it at Amazon. There are also many other condensed versions of some of the great Indian classics like Mahabharata, Srimad Bhagavatam and Ramayana to read also. Let me know if you're interested and I'll give you those titles also. I hope this helps. Again, I can't tell you how much the book I mentioned helped me to understand. Take care! Hare Krsna! Mark
  23. Hi Debbie. What books have you been reading? Maybe I can suggest one. Hare Krsna! Mark
  24. Hi Mxyzptlk. Hare Krsna. Looking at the written words is an excellent idea. I'm going to try that. I will also look over the website you suggested sometime later this evening when my son goes to bed. Thanks for your help. Your Servant, Mark
