Dear members,

This is a wonderful Bhairava Stotra composed by Mahamaheshwara Shri Abhinava

Gupata, the great stalwart of Kashmir Shaiva Siddhanta.

who pervades the entire world who is the universal consciousness, without a

second, eternal, who is the ultimate refuge to the helpless, I offer adoration

to Him – Lord Bhairava, from my heart deeply absorbed with concentrated mind.

O Mahesha! With the divine grace of thy kindness this entire universe looks

nothing but thy manifestation ie, Bhairava himself is in the form of this

universe, and without Bhairava this universe has no existence. Thus wherever I

see thee O Bhairava, I see you as my own self and hence this entire universe too

seems to be my ownself.

O lord! This entire universe is thy manifestation and realizing myself as one

with the universal being; how can I be frightened by austere and unbearable

agony or sorrow as a result of frustration from endless actions that bind us to

ceaseless circle of life and death.

O antaka, the lord of Death! Do not cast your ghastly look upon me in wrath

and dreadful posture. Absorbed in dedicated to Lord Shankara and adept in

absorbing meditation to Lord Shankara I am guarded with terrible and

extraordinary energies of Bhairava, the Lord of Creation, Sustenance and

Destruction.

O Lord of the worlds! Salutions to thee. I stand outshining by the rays

emanating from thy universal conscious energy and the darkness of ignorance has

been completely destroyed yielding to light and spiritual consciousness. The

death, the Lord of the Death and the goblins of Karma do not terrify me.

With the dawn of the rays of eternal truth and the universal consciousness, I

having realized the basic fundamentals and reality of the objective world, have

attained salvation, liberation being full with the nectar flowing from the

objects with the complete identification of my soul with the universal

consciousness.

O Shankara, Destroyer of all evils! It is a fact and truth that the universal

miseries are warded off by observing penances as keeping fasts, by giving dana

and taking daily baths. But the meditation upon the devotional scriptures of thy

praise bring about the showers of nectar leading to bliss and eternal joy

O Bhairava! You are matchless, you have the dearest and beautiful look, easily

accessible by devotees, but inaccessible by people devoid of devotion. My

singing in ecstasy.

Dear Sriram,

Somewhere I also read that Sri Adi Shankara met and debated with Abhinava

Gupta, as a result of which Adi Shankara composed Subramanya bhujangam? Is

that right?

Regards,

Raghav

[Abhinavagupta lived some 150 years after Shankara. There is a " story " which

says Navagupta debated with Shankara and lost, and the rest of the story is

anybody's guess...It reminds me of some low budget Telugu movies where the plot

is anybody's guess. :-)) - Satish]

Dear raghav,

The " krama stotra " is supposed to the last composition of

Mahameshwara Acharya Abhinava Gupta. The Acharya Abhinava mentions

the date of composition of the composition of Krama Stotra which is

990 AD. So, it is stated by kashmiri scholars that acharya was born

in between 955 AD – 960 AD. Now, Acharya Sankara took birth some

100-150 years before the birth of Abhinava Gupta. Acharya Sankara

lived for 32 years. So, where is the question of debates and

polemics between Sankara and Abhinava Gupta.

The dhyana sloka of abhinava is just marvelous that describes the

brahmic and ecstatic state of abhinava. Always rolling in spiritual

ecstasy, forehead besmeared with bhasma and his body adorned with

rudraksha. He had long overflowing hair and beard. He looked like

adhora shiva or dakshinamurthy.
