Books I purchased today from Sagar Publications

Dear All, Today I went to Sagar Publications, Delhi to buy some astrology books. The books that I had planned to buy was Hora Makaranda of Gunakara and Jaimini Sutramritam of Iranganti Rangacharya. I was lucky to get a copy of both these books from Sagar Publications, New Delhi. Let me tell you something about these these books and some other books I bought today. 1) Hora Makarand (Gunakara alias Gunadhya) Gunadhya is a 10th century scholar who is also the author of the text Brihat Katha. It is based on the text Brihat Katha that later the very famous text Katha Sarit Sagara (Ocean of stories) was written. Gunadhyas text Hora Makarand is one of the earliest source text available in Sanskrit in complete form till today (apart from earlier texts such as Spujidhwaja Hora, Meenaraja hora, Brihat Jataka etc). Gunadhya was a Jain. One of the specialty and importance of Hora Makarand is that it is a work based on the texts of ancient sages such as Badarayana, Vasishta, Parasara etc. He quotes the slokas of these ancient sages on many instances. Hora Makarand is penned by Gunadhya in an effort to systematize and the views of various ancient writers and to present the essence of his understanding to the benefit of the learners. Gunadya lived during the reign of kuntala satakarni and was his minister. But it is said that after losing an argument, Gunadhya stopped using Sanskrit, quit his job and went to forest for Tapasya. This text Hora Makaranda must had been written before this event during his ministerial days itself. It was later that he wrote Brihat Katha. It is said that the text Brihat Katha was originally written in Paisachi Prakrit. He wrote seven lakh stories in his own blood in colloquial paisachi prakrit. The king is a lover of classical Sanskrit refused dedication. Gunadhya was desperated. He kindled fire and offered stories to the fire God. He, his disciples and all life animate and inanimate shed tears. By the time the King came to know this, six lakh stories were consumed by fire. The King ran up and saved one lakh stories. That is the story Brihatkatha left to us.<===

 

 

Thus for us this ancient 10th century text is a very valuable resource - an excellent text that provides us with better understanding about Ancient Indian Astrology as practiced by the sages and a text prepared by a well known authentic unique scholar. 2) J aimini Sutramritam (Iranganti Rangacharya) As many of you may know Iranganti Rangacharya is considered as one of the living legends of Jaimini Astrology. He is the guru of many scholars known to us such as Shanmukha ji and Shyam Sundardas ji. The best commentaries currently available on Jaimini system in English are Jaimini Sutramritam by Irangati Rangacharya and Jaimini Upadesa Sutras by Sanjay Rath. The well-informed students radiate and propagate the light shown to them by their gurus and the knowledgeable Sishyas itself becomes an evidence to measure how good their guru is. When we see that for scholar members of this group such as Shanmukha ji and Shyam Sundar Das ji the scholar Mahamahopadhyaya Iranganti Rangacharya is a well reputed guru; then there is nothing for us to doubt as well - but only to drink from that rare stream of pure knowledge. So I thought I will buy another books written by Rangacharya ji as well. I could get two more books by him - One, A Manual of Jaimini Astrology and 2nd, Bhuvana Deepika (commentry by Iranganti Rangacharya) I trust that my understanding about Jaimini sutras will be enriched these texts.Love and regards,Sreenadh
