The mother of all Indian languages, Sanskrit seems to be losing its place

in the modern world. But Mambalam Samskrita Vidyalaya, (a FREE sanskrit

institution imparting the knowledge of this classical language to everyone

without having any differences in age, sex, caste etc) is one of the few

institutions keeping the ancient language alive.

 

Mambalam Samskrita Vidyalaya, started in the year 1955, is entering into

its 50th year. This institution was founded by octogenarian

founder-principal, O.R.Rajagopalachariar, who considers Sanskrit as his

breath.

 

Interestingly, many sishyas who studied under him are working as Sanskrit

professors in all leading colleges. There are many sishyas from varied

professions like lawyers, Doctors, engineers, IAS officers..who are still

studying under him.

 

Here this sanskrit school even conducts the VAGVARDHINI SABHA every

Saturday to help students discuss in Sanskrit and share their views.

 

This institution coaches students for the Chittoor Samskrita Basha

pracharini sabha. Totally 6 examinations are there. Exams are conducted on

an half-yearly basis. FYI, Kovida(5th examination) is equivalent to BA

degree and Vidyabhooshana(6th exam) is equivalent to MA degree.

 

At the end of the course, what the students can boast of is the vast

knowledge that they have gained.

 

Now the institution has entered into Golden Jubilee year. They have

planned a year long celebrations and the final celebrations will be held

during January 2005.

 

All the three sons of Rajagopalachariar swami have inherited their

father's love for the language and apparently have a very good flair for

it.

 

At a time, when college and school admissions come for a price, here's a

man who believes in imparting knowledge free.
