One should also take a good look at E F Schumacher's book Small is Beautiful subtitled Economics as if People Mattered.

The link didn't come through and needs some tweeking.

No one should think that because Schumacher was a Buddhist that his thoughts are relevant for Buddhists only it is just that his view was formed by Buddhism. The approach he offers is relevant and fits well with any philosophy that recognoizes the destructive effect of unbridled greed and a subsequent economic system that is hell bent on reducing humans to the level of mere machinary.
