Global Judaism: An intensive weekend with Rabbi Michael Lerner (not only for Jews)
October 4, 2004
Greetings!
Global Judaism------
A weekend intensive course with Rabbi Michael
Lerner. We can OFFER IT IN YOUR COMMUNITY or you can
come to take it in California. SF: Oct. 15-17. LA: Nov. 12-14
Global Judaism is the next stage in the evolution of
Jewish consciousness as it connects with the
universal development of consciousness necessary to
sustain hum life in the face of global ecological
and social justice crises of the 21st century.
Increasingly aware of the unity of all being and our
mutual interdependency with every other person on
the planet and with the earth itself, Judaism must
evolve in the 21st century in ways that make it
sustainable and a voice for global sanity. That
evolution will require a willingness to leave behind
or transcend chauvinist, ultra-nationalist, and
tribalist elements of our past, but to be authentic
it must incorporate much of what has been
spiritually vibrant and powerful. This course
presents the Global Judaism that is emerging, and
can function as an introduction to Judaism for those
who have no previous background or knowledge of the
Jewish people, its history, thought and traditions,
but also as an exciting stimulus for new creativity
among those well-rooted in the tradition.
Rabbi Lerner was a student of Abraham Joshua
Heschel at the Jewish Theological Seminary, has 2
ph.d.s (one in philosophy and a second in clinical
psychology) and is the author of nine books
including Jewish Renewal, Spirit Matters: Global
Healing and the Wisdom of the Soul, and Healing
Israel/Palestine.
****************************************
Weekend Intensive with Rabbi Michael Lerner
Topics:
*Cruelty is Not Destiny: The Origins of Jewish
Visions of Transcendence
*The Evolution of the Concept of God Throughout
Jewish History
*Understanding Jewish History as a Prelude to a
Universal Consciousness and Spiritual Awareness
*Kabbalah and Jewish Mysticism
*Jesus: a Jewish perspective
*How can a rational, intellectually sophisticated
person believe in any conception of God or Spirit?
*How can anyone continue to believe in God after the
Holocaust?
*Transcending Chauvinism and Nationalism: What
elements of traditional Judaism can be preserved in
a Global Judaism and how can Global Judaism be
authentic and not a "new age" fanciful construction?
*Why should Judaism persist? Wouldn't it make more
sense to simply create a universal culture and
spirituality for the increasingly globalized world?
What role is there for non-Jews in a Global Judaism?
Should Jews seek to convert people to Global
Judaism? Does one have to be born Jewish to be
part--is it still fundamentally an ethnic reality?
ALL THAT--in one intensive weekend, interweaved with
Shabbat prayers, singing, meditation and meeting
some wonderful people. No previous familiarity with
Judaism or Hebrew presupposed. Non-Jews, orthodox
atheists, and Jews who are very very skeptical are
all invited (but also invited to put their
skepticism on hold and allow themselves to
experience and learn a new way of thinking about
Judaism--to make the weekend work).

Whatever your spiritual or religious background or
proclivities, the experience of this course will
have a profound impact on how you think about your
world.
If you've ever wondered what it might be like to
have a combination of progressive politics and yet a
serious commitment to a spiritual tradition, you'll
love this weekend intensive.
And because the course will be small, it's a good
way to create a more personal connection with Rabbi
Michael Lerner.
Thanks for all that you are doing to build a saner and more loving world!
