Jaya Jagannath
Dear Sridhar,
A well thought and comprehensive mail. I appreciate your concern that the
innocent might be mislead. But I wonder, what are your fears!!! Its is
thoroughly understood by most of us that the vedic chants are to be recited the
exact intonations passed down by the maharishis themselves. But tell me, how
many of us do all the Gayatris and other mantras with the correct intonations
and let them alone, how many of us even correctly pronounce each and each
syllable of the mantras. There are many who don't and you would agree with me
on that. But, my Jyotish Guru, Pt. Sanjay Rath says that the prasiddha mantras
have the nature of self-correction. In one of the mails Narasimha has showed,
how his daughter, picked up the correct Brhaspati mantra. I have enough
experiences of the same. We know that, we are born with some limitations and we
cannot master the mantras from the first time of recitation, however with
continuous recitations, we reach near the exact ones. For that matter, we
master everything with persistence and patience as we are not born with it.
You said, that the chanting of the 3rd Anuvaka of the Chamaka prasna is of
little appeal. Probably you have not experienced the same. This is a prescribed
remedy and according to the Vedic Remedies in Astrology by Pt. Sanjaya Rath.
This anuvaka has tremendous potential to cool down the evil effects of the
Sani. To pacify all the ekadas rudras, the 3rd anuvaka can be recited 11 times.
My own younger brother was passing through a very troubled time and he started
chanting this mantra 11 times as suggested and that too without following the
intonations as given in Yajurveda and he is extremely benefitted. I saw there
are many others who got benefitted out of it. This is easier to remember one
anuvaka and chant it 11 times, than remembering all the 11 anuvakas and thus is
a more practical remedy for the people suffering with kantaka Sani or Sade Sati.
Try this and it shall work for you too.
I think I am lucky enough to got in touch with one such person who can teach me
the correct intonation of the vedic mantras. Its difficult, however I myself
try to follow the correct pronunciation and intonation. However, thats not the
only way. Taking the lords name should be a pleasing experience and one need
not be afraid of the rage. We have learnt to love god and not to fear him. More
than that Shiva is our guru, who takes us to the right path, then why shall we
be afraid. Taking his name with full faith shall lead us to the right path.
Then why should we be afraid of.
I would like to know such people, who has made veda as something for bed time
reading. A source of knowledge which is as pure as Vedas can only be
comprehended, when studied seriously and with lots of patience and persistence.
Anyway, I am yet to come accross such people in this list. Citing references
shall be a great help.
You are right, there could be incorrect transliterations in the websites and
books from the sources mentioned by you could be more appropiate. I have one
from the Ramakrsna Mission and it looks pretty good and matches the recited
versions I have by the pandits from Tirupati. So I guess they would be correct.
I guess, yours is a very valid suggestion in this regard. For that matter, the
one given at the puja.net is not a very correct transliteration. You might
refer to sanskrit.gde.to for the most authentic sanskrit texts on the web,
which has many committed contributers and proof-readers.
Thanks a lot for the translaotion on the Rudram. Can you please give me some
link for the translations of the Chamakam?
Before I end, just a minute correction, Shiva Panchakshara is Namah Sivaya or
Namassivaya. What you mentioned as Aum Namah Sivaya is Shiva Shadakshara.
I would like to comment on your horsocope. However, I would like to see your own analysis first.
Best Wishes
Sarajit Poddar

Subject: [vedic-astrology] SADE SATHI & Sri Rudram/Chamakam
Dear Members of the List,
Namasthe. Of late, I see a lot of concerns about Sade Sathi and Chamakam being
prescribed as remedy for it. In principle, I agree with this. After patiently
watching the list for a while, thought of honestly expressing what I feel about
its implications, as no one in the list has cautioned the innocent.
First, chanting Chamakam without chanting Sri Rudram (or Namakam) before that
does not make sense. That too chanting just the third Anuvakam of Chamakam has
very little appeal. Come on, take a look at the meaning of that Anuvakam and
for that matter the entire Chamakam and of course, Sri Rudram.
See for example,
http://www.mypurohith.com/Rituals/Namakam1.asp
and ofcourse, as someone already pointed
http://www.puja.net/Pages/YagyaGroup...ranslation.htm
Chanting Sri Rudram and Chamakam is perhaps the most ancient Vedic way of
praying to Lord Siva. In fact, more than the meanings/interpretations, it is a
MANTRA that must be chanted in the exact same chanda (or metre) as it is being
chanted by sages and even Devas for all these thousands of years. There is
absolutely no room for compromise in this, folks.
I don't mean to offend anyone. But I cannot stand seeing a set of people
discussing in a tone that "Vedas could make a good bed time reading". NO.
Kindly give them the due respect that they deserve, after all.
It is so rare to get this Human birth. Each of us would like to lead a happy
life. But have brought with us some past Karma (good/bad). When the Grand
Master goes to settle the score with at most Dharma, it is very little that we
humans can do going upstream to change. (By the way, imagine what chaos this
world would be, if there is no one to keep the score of past Karma.) Instead of
learning to cope and emerge out with minimum or no injury, please do not play
with fire and get into more problems by kindling the wrath of Rudra (kAlagni).
However,
Vrikshasyamula Sekena Shakhahpusyanti Vaiyatha |
Shive Rudre Japatprete prita Yevasya Devatah ||
(Suta Samhita)
By watering the tree at the base of the trunk all the parts of the tree
including branches, leaves, fruits etc are strengthened. In the same way, by
worshipping Lord Siva alone, all Devas will be pleased and one will get both
the earthly and heavenly benefits including liberation. So, regularly chanting
Sri Rudram and Chamakam (ie., praying to Siva) certainly would help the
individual - whether during Sade Sathe or not.
So, I suggest the following :
Start with reading some books written by great Gurus to help you focus well on
Siva. Luckily a couple of them are available online for free :
1.
http://www.thedivinelifesociety.org/...d/lordsiva.htm
2.
http://www.himalayanacademy.com/books/dws/
Carefully with all devotion, learn the correct pronunciation of each and every
sound in Sri Rudram and Chamakam from a qualified Guru and then regularly chant
them. In this modern age it is quite hard to find a decent person (it is adharma
to change someone to learn Veda, so you need a less greedy person, who can spend
time teaching you) who chants these ancient treasures without any mistakes, let
alone the problem of those who are living in countries outside the holy land of
India. Further, even if you find such a person, he may not be willing to teach
you - for reasons that you are not born in the high caste of brahmin, etc.,
For that matter, I am one such unfortunate. I live in California, USA and the
Priests in this area simply refused to teach me, as I am not a brahmin by
birth. Luckily several years ago, I had bought from Atlanta Hindu Temple a tape
of this Chanting released by Chinmaya Mission. But due to ignorance (this
happens a lot in this info age) I did not hear it. I digged it out, played it
everyday and followed it with books.
Again, there is some complexity of getting hold of a script that is with the
least number of mistakes, typos, etc., if you cannot read Devanagari. One has
to find books published by institutions like Chinmaya Mission, Ramakrishna
Mutt, where they employ selfless Gurus to do the time consuming proof-readings
the transliterations. The reason I am saying this is because, a lot of us have
already ran into several websites that have published these classics in
transliterated form. I don't mean to under mean them, but would like to caution
the average innocent person not to be mislead even a little.
When you learn it yourself, it is almost certain that you will chant imperfectly
in the beginnings. Unfortunately, that is the fact of life : to make a right
judgement one needs experience and you get the valuable experience only by
making several judgements, of course, wrongly. :-)
But the merciful Siva won't punish you for that, if you do it with atmost
devotion, surrender, put all efforts to correct your mistakes, progressively
improve, etc., Ah ! that is the key - at most DEVOTION and SURRENDER.
In fact, Hinduism is a way of life and it is only by practicing devotion one can
progress spiritually. In particular, you will find an ocean of change in you, as
you regularly chant Sri Rudram and Chamakam with at most devotion and surrender.
Wait a minute. Is this transformation is not what the Grand Master, the
Universal Task Master and Teacher, Sri Sanischara Maharaj wants you to under go
? Yes ! You are learning the lessons and undergoing the transformation - but in
a very pleasant, permanent way. You did not take a short cut ! You took a time
tested and well respected path and you deserve the real rewards.
Nevertheless, all these could be too complicated to some people in this fast
world. A simple solution to such people is to chant the holy Siva Panchakshara
- Aum NamahShivaya, which is embedded in the center of Sri Rudram, as manytimes
as you can - but with at most devotion. Or else, choose some other easy sloka or
mantra to please Sanischaran or Sada Siva.
Sarve Janaah Sukhino Bhavanthu
Warm Regards,
Sridar K Pootheri
PS:
My Sade Sathi has started recently ! I am already jobless for the past 21
months. If anyone cares to shed some light, it would be really helpful.
My birth details :
Time: 4:19 pm (rectified by Yogi Karve Guruji); Date Sept 12, 1966; Place: Madras 80E17, 13N04
Yes, I have my Lord of Lagna Saturn in Retro in 11th from AL; so what ?! Not
sure from when my Exalted Jupiter will kick in Hamsa Yoga. My Debelitated Mars
(though neecha is bhanga) should be getting all His attention. Not sure from
the so called Raja Yoga due to this Mars will show its signs.
Venus MahaDasa had been very disappointing, depressing and emotionally costly.
Hoping that my Sun Maha Dasa starting from July 30th changes my life. My 5L in
D10 is Exalted Sun - His Maha dasha should bring some change in job. But when
and of what sort ?!
