Default reg durga Saptasati - 04-27-2002, 08:08 AM

Sanjay Ji,

Yes, I am reading it every day already in the prescribed way you have
mentioned. What is the significance of reading in evening? Is is
because one is relatively free in evenings after all days work? or is
there some other reason?

I do not know what is "Ishta Mantra"?I pray LOrd ganesha before
reading it ,thats all!

In fact ,we had been asked to first read it 40 times to understand
uccharan alone before being acepted to the formal class and even
trying to understand meaning......I have not been able to go to
formal classes ,as i had to leave for US in between..so I am
continuing anyways.

Regards,

Arun

Om Gurave Namah

Dear Arun
I guess this ISTA MANTRA should have been the first thing taught out here. I am
requesting Solai & Phyll to ensure that they prepare a small lesson on ista
Devata determination immediately so that you all may know your Ista devata and
start the prayers. this is normally the first thing done after initiation.
Best Regards,
Sanjay Rath

Dear Karu,

Durga Saptashati are 700 verses dedicated to the evolution of the Devi
and is a part of the Markandeya Purana. It is also known as the Devi
Mahatmya and Shri Shri Chandi. It begins with the emergence of the Devi
from Vishnu's body as he lay supine in yoganidra, specially invoked by
Brahma for the destruction of the asuras Madhu and Kaitabha. She
represents the three gunas Satva, Rajas and Tamas in the forms of
Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi and Mahakali. These three root forms
diversifies into many benign and terrible images depending on the nature
and gravity of the evil the devi is warding off. Thus she appears as
Goddess Kalika, Chamunda, Ambika, Shivaduti etc but the main deity here
is Chamunda. She has several battles with the following asuras:
Shumbh-Nishumbha, Dhumralochan, Raktabeej, Chanda-Munda, Mahishasura
among others. The more evil the asura, the more terrible the form of
devi. It contains some of the most beautiful stutis to the devi sung by
the gods, like the aparajita devi stuti. Devi appears here as the Divine
Mother who protects her children from all evil. Therefore the hearing or
reciting of the Chandi is extremely auspicious. The learned in the list
will be able to give you greater details.

Dasjuptaji,

Very much so. It has 700 verses, hence saptashati.
