Default Bhairava - 01-30-2005, 10:40 PM

According to writings from Mata Amritananda-mayi
(a.k.a. Ammachi), initiates of Shri Vidya either
worship Tripurasundari ("Shri Kula") or Kali ("Kali
Kula"). Is this the source of the Samaya/Kaula split
that some of you have been going on about?

Isn't there also a tradition of worshipping Lakshmi as
Queen of the Shri Chakra? Where does that fit in?

Ammachi goes on to explain that Tripurasundari's
consort is Dakshinamurti, Shiva as the bliss-inducing
Silent Guru (who appears to be very traditionally
Vedic). Kali's consort is Bhairava, Shiva as the
frightening mendicant wanderer (very Tantric,
apparently).

How is Bhairava worshipped? Do you Kaula Shri Vidya
initiates worship him? And how do I reconcile a site
I found online which says that Kala Bhairava grants
boons, but also accrues negative karma for his
devotees -- making him sound very similar to the
Western Satan?

With all respect to Ammachi, this is not proper (or maybe it is mere
misunderstanding of what she wrote). Kali-kula is a "separate"
tradition with it's own gurus and shastras. Although, some masters and
some upasakas were and are initiated into both; and some texts are
almost equally authorative for both schools.

Is this the source of the Samaya/Kaula split

No. The matter discussed was regarding to Shri-vidya itself only.

Yes, She is worshipped in Shrichakra. At least in south indian SV
tradition it is so.

However Ananda-bhairava is also associated with Tripurasundari.
In general Kali-kula is indeed somewhat more extreme, at least as it
is viewed by outsiders.

Bhairava is worshipped in all kaula traditions in this or that way, be
it Kali-kula, Tara, Shri-vidya or Kubjika.

And how do I reconcile a site

That is seemingly some kind of "new age" nonsense )...

Never heard that about Bhairava, but if karma acrues then it must be in a
relative form of Shiva. Karma acrues to most action though, especially selfish
action. Nonetheless, as all these forms of Godhead are really glyphs of the
Supreme, nameless reality of the Absolute pure awareness as experienced in
various samadhis, I would take any relative description with a grain.

According to Dr.Robert Svoboda in the "Shani Mahatmya"
(The Greatness of Saturn), Kala Bhairava (The Great
Black Terrifier)is the Deity of the graha or planetary
force of Shani, or Saturn, personified as an elderly,
dark-skinned Shudra oil-presser. Since Saturn is the
planet who regulates one's karmas, this may account
for the idea of a connection between Kala Bhairava and
accruing negative karma. It may be that any
carelessness or error in the worship of Kala Bhairava
"annoys" Saturn and results in negative karmic
reactions, since Saturn rules discipline, and thus
would look upon any lack of it in the worship of Kala
Bhairava as disrespect, and so would take measures to
punish the offenders in his own fashion. This may all
sound rather absurd, but anyone who has had any
experience with the planetary grahas can tell you they
are definitely capable of such things!
