Default Translation - 03-12-2004, 08:50 AM

Nirvana is a neutral word, so it will be nirvaaNam in Sanskrit.

Vidya (Vidyaa, long a , a feminine word) means knowledge. Veda is the name of the old scriptures. Also Veda has the verbal root "vid" which means to know.
That is vid in the second conjugation. "He knows" is in Sanskrit "vetti". But there is also a vid in the fourth conjugation. In this conjugation vid means "to be, to be present, to exist" He is = vidyate. There is also vid in the sixth conjugation. In this conjugation vid means "to find", he finds = vindati.
So the vedas are "sacchidaananda" (sat-chit-aananda)
All the three words has a corresponding verbal root of vid.
sat = vid 6th conjugation, vidyate. Sat is to be. The supreme thruth, which always existed and will be existing in the future.
chid = consciousness, vid 2nd conjugation, vetti. Consciousness is knowing.
Ananda = happiness, bliss. vid 4th conjugation, vindati. searching and finding happiness.

I will give Nirvana, vidya, veda (singular and plural) in Devanagari scripts along with Roman Transcription.

ಜ್ಞಾನಸ್ಯಾಂತೋ ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ. JnAnasyAnto na vidyate. ज्ञानस्यान्तो न विद्यते ।

Default Ooh hey, I have one - 04-01-2004, 01:07 AM

If you guys do translations for fun, I have one for you, for the same purpose. I want a tattoo of it.

It's Gandhi's most powerful quote, shortened just a bit --

"Be the change you want to see in the world."

I have a picture of it from Gandhi's official E-Archive, because they are selling a t-shirt with the English and Sanskrit on it. But the English obscures the Sanskrit just a bit.

Anyway, if you could give me a translation, I would be eternally grateful and could finally stop obsessing about it.

Here is the translation of Gandhi's quote "Be the change you want to see in the world."
The translation is:-
"yat parivartanam tvam samsare drashtum ichchasi
tat parivartanam bhava"

Note:- The subject in the quote is you. I have assumed it is single "you".

Hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.

Default translatio for 'perseverance' and 'adversity' - 05-15-2008, 02:24 PM

Hi,

I wanted to know how the words 'perseverance' (=persistence in spite of difficulties), and 'adversity' translate into sanskrit.

I'm looking to get a tattoo done of the words, so if you could provide the authentic symbols/script it would be very helpful. Thanks a lot in advance!

ps: sorry for starting a new thread earlier, tried to delete it but don't know how...

I'm not sure if I am in the correct place for this, but I am looking to get my son's name translated into sanskrit. I have my daughters name in Sanskrit already, but have just had a baby boy and would like to get his name too.

His name is Logan. Any help would be very gratefully recieved
