Default difference between sanskrit and sanskrit?!

hi,
I'd like to know if there might be a problem if people from europe who know some sanskrit can be understood in india. I mean, since the pronounciation of the westerners could be more than lacking (due to the fact that teachers focus on the grammer, of course..!), don't you think that although one has quite a good demand of the language indians could not be able to understand him..?

If you talk sanskrit in correct grammar, Hindus will understand you European. But if they talk to you, you shall not make out a word!

Russians who have studied sanskrit seem to have good pronunciation. Americans tend to have heavy american accents.
