Default Mata Amritanandamayi - 01-16-2002, 03:20 AM

Namaste!

Attached is the newsletter published by the
Amritananda ashram. Mataji is a truly divine
incarnation of the Divine Mother. The author has had
the experience of profusely weeping, with the entire
spine literally on fire during his first encounter
with the Mother. This lasted for about three hours and
it was really embarrassing to be sitting and crying
out of sheer joy for that long. Since then I have
noted that a lot of people do start crying in front of
her. If anyone has a chance to meet her, please do so.
Those who are interested in subscribing to this can
easily do so.
Sadhanas done in her vicinity tend to have more
powerful effects.

Again to all those who have written to me(including
Vijay Bhaskar), I will reply during the weekend owing
to work constraints. So kindly excuse me till then.

Aum namasivaya,
Vijay

Amma's
words
The Conflicts
of Married Life
"It is very rare to find a truly loving relationship. The
love between a married couple is usually only skin deep. If one
of them says 'yes,' the other will make it a point to say 'no.'
This is because there is a serious lack of understanding between
the husband and wife.
In most cases the couple won't even make an attempt to understand
each other. For the development of a true relationship to take place,
a basic understanding of human nature, the nature of men and women,
is essential. A man should know what a woman is really like and
vice versa. But, instead, they dwell in two isolated worlds with
no connections between them. They are like two isolated islands
with no link between them, not even a ferry service.
"Men are mostly intellectual, while women tend to be more
emotional. They dwell in two different centers, along two parallel
lines. No real meeting takes place within them. How, then, can there
be any love between the two?
Their different natures should be understood and accepted, and
each one, both husband and wife, should make a conscious effort
to reach out to the other, to the heart, and then try to work out
their problems with this understanding as their foundation. They
shouldn't try to control each other. They shouldn't say to each
other, 'I say yes, and therefore you should also say yes.' Any such
attitude should be dropped, for it will only lead to anger and even
hatred. The love in such a relationship will be very superficial.
If the gulf between these two centers, the intellect and heart,
can be bridged, the sweet music of love will spring forth from the
depths within them. This unifying factor is spirituality. If you
look at our ancestors, you will see that their marriages were generally
more loving than such relationships are today. There was much more
love and harmony in their lives, because they had a better understanding
of the spiritual principles and their implications in day-to-day
life.
Children, learn to respect each other's feelings. Learn to listen
to each other's problems with love and concern. When you listen
to your partner, he or she should be able to feel that you are genuinely
interested and that you would sincerely like to help. Your partner
should feel your care and concern, your respect and admiration.
An open acceptance of the other is needed, and there should be no
reservations. Still, conflicts are bound to occur; misunderstandings
and disagreements may arise. But later, one should be able to say,
'I'm sorry, please forgive me. I didn't mean it.' Or you could say,
'I love you and I'm deeply concerned about you, don't ever think
otherwise. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said what I said; in my anger
I lost my temper and my power of discrimination.' Such soothing
words will help to heal any hurt feelings; it will also contribute
to a deep feeling of love between you, even after a big quarrel."

Smiling and Satisfied faces

When Amma arrived in Trivandrum for the 2002 Brahmasthanam
programs, devotees flocked to catch a glimpse of Her as She
drove by. She went to the balcony of the Ashram and personally
rolled prasad of vibhutti and candy while brahmacharinis handed
the packets out to devotees rushing forward. She spent at
least ten minutes throwing flower petals from the balcony
to the devotees below. The sight resembled a wave of bliss,
the constant stream of falling petals and devotees shoulder
to shoulder weaving and reaching up to catch even a petal
or two. It was truly an unimaginable sight of profound devotion.

An Ordinary Lunch Stop?
Sometimes travel stops with Mother hold delightful surprises, precious
and unique events-like the time last year when She sang under a
full moon, and then practically danced, arms outstretched, to Her
car. But much of the time these stops are what would pass for ordinary
family outings were it not for the fact that the Mother here is
Extraordinary, and Her children number about two hundred.

"Set a Good Example There"
13 January, 2002. South India Tour - En Route to Madurai
We had stopped for lunch in a grove of coconuts when Amma asked
a young girl to stand and tell a story regarding her education.
The girl was painfully shy and despite Amma's loving coaching,
speaking in public was a challenge. But you could tell that
this was but one of many moments of loving support Amma had
given her.
Amma finished the story the young girl had started. She had
lost her birth mother when she was 13 and remembered well
the pain.
Amma had become the focus of her life, first at the orphanage and
then at the Ashram in Amritapuri as she studied to someday become
a teacher.
You could see Amma's love for this happy, bright-eyed girl. Amma
had given her all the love a mother can give, yet Amma confessed
that she needed more discipline and the girl was going to move to
another ashram closer to the school where she would finish her studies.
Amma said "Our ashram is like a forest."
Mother admonished her to "set a good example there."
The young girl told herself "Oh, I am going be a model student
by getting the highest scholastic award."
As graduation approached the girl prepared her acceptance speech
and was set to accept the prize graciously and proudly. She wanted
it to be perfect so she approached her friends asking for advice
on what to say in her speech. Even though she did not have the grades
to get such a high honor, she believed she'd be chosen because,
she thought, Amma told her so. Her friends were amused and puzzled
because they had never heard of this award she was preparing for.
Amma went on to say that the big day came To the young girl's dismay
the name announced was not hers and she sank back in her seat in
shock. Later with her friends she could only sob uncontrollably.
The girl was truly childlike and believed Amma without reservation.
How could she not? When she lost her birth mother, Amma took her
place. When she had no future, Amma guided her and soon she will
become a teacher.
She had followed her guru's instructions faithfully, but she followed
the wrong instructions. The young girl misunderstood what Mother
meant by "there." Amma had instructed her to be a model
there at the ashram, not there at the school. Mother knew she was
not sharp enough to be a model student, but the Guru's words were
misunderstood. How often do many of us think we are following our
Guru's wishes only to run into a wall? However, this girl, as well
as we, are blessed with having a Guru that is present and is there
for us when we take a step in the wrong direction. Amma also gives
us a gift of her continued presence so that we may retain our childlike
innocence. She is truly there for us.
While Amma's story was humorous, we could see how Mother had given
this girl the greatest gift. The gift of childlike innocence. I
was moved to realize through Mother's story that this girl and many
more like her will some day pass along Mother's gift of innocence
by showing unconditional love. Perhaps we might too.
