John,
I don't know about how mysticism and connects to enlightenment but I
know that it's always been a big interest for me, as is the subject of
energy manipulation. Coincidentally, I went and met with the Director
of the Taoist Institute of Los Angeles yesterday because I wanted to buy
a copy of his dissertation because it's on the same thing that I'm doing
my thesis on...this blew me away how in luck I was in...he just happened
to have *just* finished his dissertation in Dec. 1998--for his clinical
psychology program too, and I flipped through it and he includes a lot
about Kundalini yoga and chi gong--which is what I wanted to do!

Anyway, how this relates to your topic of mysticism is that he also
teaches Professional Remote Viewing--the ability to "see" information at
a distance...you know, like psychics. This guy is legit, Professor Carl
Totton has been studying Chinese martial arts for over 35 years, is a
grandmaster in kungfu, and is a licensed psychologist. He's
well-respected in the community. I'm excited to know him because
psychology is my field too. I think that people who want to practice
chi gong who are on the true path are mystics and healers. What do you
really want to do with all that stored up energy...become healthy
yourself, spiritually, physically, mentally, yes...but I think
eventually you will naturally come to want to help others.

I like that...it validates my reasons for wanting to learn this.

Carl Totton is also a Taoist Monk (Abbot, actually) -- he married my husband
and I. He is definitely "for real". Best of luck with you endeavors. You
have found a great teacher.
