The Effects of the Trigunas
Jaya Guru Datta,
Here is today's saying:
“It was shown in the previous lesson that ignorance is the root cause for
Adhyaaropa (superimpositioin). We also came to know the different synonyms of
ignorance. One of them is 'Moola Prakriti'. Let us examine this term.
There are three Gunas that are the basis for creation. They are Satva, Rajas,
and Tamas. Satva is pure and clear like a crystal Happiness, peace and
knowledge are its qualities. Rajas has the tendency to tinge. Because of this,
it causes longing for fruits of action and thus encourages a person to indulge
in actions. Tamas veils the mind. It makes the person indiscriminate by
eclipsing the faculty of discrimination and thus causes inaction. This is
called Pramaada. It causes lethargy and disinterestedness (not conscious
detachment!) and thereby makes the person to postpone even the normal duties.
This is called Aalasya. It also causes forgetfulness. This is called Nidra.
The person who has predominance of Satva will remain happy even when there are
reasons for him to grieve. A person with excess of Rajas will be restless and
will remain hyperactive even when he has the opportunity to remain calm. A
Tamasic person forgets his normal duties and remains inert, having lost his
capacity to discriminate."
