He who has understood Brahman
Jaya Guru Datta,
Here is today's saying:
“In the past lessons we sought the answer for the question 'Who am I?'. We
avoided the usage of technical words and pharses but still got satisfactory
answers by using simple logic. We also realised as to how important those
answers are for a seeker.
In fact, this is the essence of all Vedantic scriptures. In spite of the
simplicity of the concept and its easy understandability, it does not become
established in the mind unless one contemplates about it for a long time and
makes sincere effort. Also, the seeker should have purity of intellect which
can be had by the grace of the Sadguru.
To aid assimilation of this essence, one should go through various scriptures
written to explain the same truth from different points of view. In doing so,
it can be ensured that no confusion or paradox creeps in from any corner. To be
able to understand those great scriptures of Vedanta, one should be acquainted
with Vedantic terminology. Starting from this lesson, we shall try to
understand the Vedantic concepts by understanding the meanings of such technical
terms.
What we eventually understood as 'I' in the past lessons is called by different
terms in Vedanta, such as 'Atma', 'Paramatma', and 'Brahma', 'Parabrahma', etc.
By understanding what is 'I' and rejecting the Anatma (non-I), one can escape
from the grip of bondage caused by Anatma Padarthaas (the non-I entities). This
itself is Moksha. Thus, it is needless to say that achieving Moksha depends on
the knowledge of 'I'. Therefore the scriptures have declared that Moksha is
possible only if one acquires 'Brahma Jnana'. We come across such quotations in
the Vedas too. 'Brahma vidaapnoti param' - is a famous hymn from the
Taittireeya Upanishad. It means - he who has understood Brahman will achieve
Moksha."
