Guest guest Report post Posted October 2, 2005 Today, October 2, is Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. What a wonderful being to remember! Here is his favorite hymn, Vaishnov Jan, obtained from the website http://www.mkgandhi.org/index.htm... English Translation from Original Gujarati Lyrics: Who shares another's sorrow, And pride does disdain. Who regards himself as the lowliest of the low, Speaks not a word of evil against any one One who keeps himself steadfast in words, body and mind, Blessed is the mother who gives birth to such a son. Who looks upon everyone as his equal and has renounced lust, And who honours women like he honours his mother Whose tongue knows not the taste of falsehood till his last breath, Nor covets another's worldly goods. He does not desire worldly things, For he treads the path of renunciation Ever on his lips is Rama's holy name, All places of pilgrimage are within him. One who is not greedy and deceitful, And has conquered lust and anger Through such a man Saint Narsaiyon has a godly vision, Generations to come, of such a man, will attain salvation ¸... ´¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸..´ ..´¨¨)) ((¸¸..´ ...´ -:¦:- ..::Brightest Blessings::.. -:¦:- ((¸¸..´.¸...` ..::Bela::.. Guest guest Report post Posted October 2, 2005 Oh, my apologies! When I added the 'dots', it didn't place them in the link in my e-mail. I guess formatting added it in. Thanks for the correction! ¸... ´¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸..´ ..´¨¨)) ((¸¸..´ ...´ -:¦:- ..::Brightest Blessings::.. -:¦:- ((¸¸..´.¸...` ..::Bela::.. - Mike Brooker Ammachi Sunday, October 02, 2005 10:07 AM Re: Mahatma Gandhi > Today, October 2, is Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. > What a wonderful being to remember! Guest guest Report post Posted October 2, 2005 When I knew nothing of Hinduism and was a young camp counselor in New York, Pete Seeger, the folk singer, taught us that bhajan. I loved it then and love it now. I loved it > then and love it now. > > Pahari Maa > I have the Pete Seeger version of "Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram" on tape --- from "The Weavers on Tour" album, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1955. I don't remember ever singing it at camp (the camp songs I do remember are unsuitable for a PG-rated site such as this!) It's such a well-known bhajan, but not on any Amritanjali tape that I know of, though you will find it in Bhajanamritam, v. II, page 210.. Do Indians get a day off work/school tomorrow, since Gandhi's birthday falls on a Sunday this year?
