Dreaming of Amma

Last night I had the most intense dreams of Amma. In fact, they were so real
that I had to collect myself for a moment after waking up. In one dream, I
was in a large darshan hall and for some reason I was taking polaroid photos
of Mother hugging everyone. When each photo came out developed, she was
looking directly at the camera, although while taking them she was not. I
thought it was strange and when I went up for darshan, my darshan lasted for
what seemed like a half hour. I am immediately woke up from this dream and
fell back asleep, where I continued to have another dream.

In the second dream, I was asking Mother all sorts of questions like why has
such and such happened to me? What is my purpose in life? etc. etc. She told
me that I had massive amounts of karma, but that she would help me with it.
Just then, she put her mouth to mine as if she were going to kiss me and
just held her mouth open inhaling for what must have been 10 minutes. Never
exhaling until she moved away. I woke up with a jolt from this dream and sat
straight up in bed. I was stunned, because the dream seemed so real. I fell
back asleep and had yet another dream...

I was back in the darshan hall and my mother called me on my cellphone (in
real life, my mother passed away over a year ago). I told her to please
drive down to such and such a place to recieve Mother's darshan. She had no
idea who Mother was, but came anyway because I convinced her. I stood behind
my mother in the darshan line wondering if Amma would know that the next
person she would hug was my mother. "There is no way she will know" I
thought. When my mother reached Amma's arms, she turned into a little girl
of maybe seven years old. Amma handed her a paintbrush and some ink and told
her she could write on her sari. There was my mother, as a little girl and
Amma was playing and laughing and being silly with her. As I watched this, I
wondered still if Amma knew that the little girl was my mother. Amma then
pointed at me, laughing and said "Your daughter" "Your daughter." to my
mother. I again woke up immediately....so immediately that I heard Amma's
voice in my bedroom saying "Your daughter." when I woke up.

What could be the significance of this. Are such lucid, realistic dreams of
Amma so common? It has never happened to me before.I read somewhere once
that one cannot dream of Mother without her willing it. Has she ever
addressed this specifically?

Hi Michelle, Wow ! Having three dreams of Amma in a single night is something. I
do get dreams of Amma but once in a while the latest one being where Amma
instructed me to chant 108 names and "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times(BTW I don't
chant any mantras). But I believe that dreams are manifestations of your
repressed desires - so you can analyze your dreams using this basic principle.
However I don't personally place too much emphasis on them even if they are
Amma's dreams. But I know some people that do and call them visions.

Wow, what wonderful dreams! It is also my understanding that you cannot dream
of
Amma without her willing it. I would suggest that you write them down and
cherish them. The best dreams of all are Amma dreams!

I think you've received a very precious gift from
Amma. What beautiful dreams...pretty amazing.

I've been told that it is impossible for us to will or
imagine a dream of a spiritual master on our
own...that when we have such dreams, they are
visitations. This resonates as true for me...my own
occasional dreams of Amma have always felt that way.

Here are Amma's words...from the new book "Messages
from Amma in the Language of the Heart" (edited by
Janine Canan). This passage is found on page 18.

Children,
Mother is always with you.
Whenever you think of Her,
She sees your faces.
At night She visits her children
all over the world.
Her children are her swans;
She watches and gathers the strays.
You are all baby birds
tucked under Mother's wing.

Don't you love that? I did...and I had to smile when I
read that fourth line.

It's probably best that this child can't just dream of
Amma at will. If I could, I'm sure I'd take way too
many naps!

Dear Michelle,

Somewhere I read an answer Amma gave regarding dreams about Her. If I find it,
I'll pass it onto you. Amma basically said there could be different reasons for
dreaming about Her, and one was that She could be thinking about a devotee.
Since you were awakened by these dreams that seemed so real, plus you had three
in a row, this ignorant little child would venture to speculate they are
significant and divinely inspired.

Namah Shivaya, Sweta,
A few nights ago, I had an Amma dream. You were in it, too!!! Amma was in
a large room of people. Suddenly, it was the end of the program. All the
people in the front 3/4 of the room left the room. The space in front of
Amma was absolutely clear and free. You and I were standing outside the
exit door peering in at Amma. We looked at each other and wondered if it
would be okay to go up to Amma even though a lot of people had left. You
asked Amma if it was okay if we could go up to her. You motioned to me that
Amma had said it was okay to come forward. We were at Amma's feet, you to
the left of me. I was kneeling but looked up at Amma with my head in a
horizontal position, kind of feeling intoxicated by Amma. You were asking
Amma one question after another. Amma was responding to each question in
perfect English. It felt so good, I have forgotten what questions you
asked. I delighted that Amma had answered to you in English.

Dreams like that are not so common, yet many of us
have probably had similar experiences now and again.
They are a real blessing. I'm sure if you asked Amma
about them she would tell you that she had visited
you. I think you can feel confident that Amma did
appear to you.

Hi Michelle,

These dreams do sound like visions to me.

To my mind, dreams are of two types (my categorization, not
necessarily a standard textbook definition of dreams)
1. Hazy
2. Lucid

The hazy dreams come from our subconscious. We may not even remember
them when we wake up. These are the nonsense thoughts that get
purged out of us because we were not efficient (read 'AWARE') enough
to dispose of them in the waking time. Some Amma dreams may come in
this category (the possibility can't be ruled out). You may ask "Why
would anyone have a dream in which he would want to 'dispose off
Amma'?". My answer would be "I don't know" or "just for the fun of
it".


The lucid dreams are of a different category. The visualization is
intense, and there is tremendous attention to detail. We usually
remember such dreams at waking (sometimes we may not), but what is
remarkable about these dreams is that THEY STIR OUR CONSCIOUSNESS
VISIBLY AND CHANGE US IRREVOCABLY, even if the change is to a minor
extent only. Most Amma dreams, in my experience, come in this
category.


I tend to think that there is a third category of dreams, which lies
between the hazy and the lucid in strength. The nature of the dreams
is hazy, but in strength, it is more lucid. I would attribute this
to be the manifestation of some STRONGLY REPRESSED THOUGHTS in our
consciousness (like the sex urge which is fairly universal example
of REPRESSED THOUGHT that people can relate to, or some particular
trauma in the past which is an example of a more personal REPRESSED
THOUGHT). Such dreams can be lucid in intensity too, so please don't
mistake these to be visions.

In your case, I get the feeling it was lucid.

Thank you all for your replies regarding my experience the other night and
for sharing your own. What is even stranger about that day, is that I felt
so close to Amma all day. In fact, I had driven halfway to work and drove
all the way back home just to get the CD of Amma singing because I just "had
to" hear her voice. These lucid dreams happened once before...and now I
realize that each day following the dream I felt so close to her and so
emotionally filled with love at the thought of her....more than usual. Also,
there was this persistent sense of longing to go back to the dream....to
have that feeling again because it was so real. It was truly a beautiful
day!!

Dearest Michelle,

I have tried to do the best I could with your dream interpretation. You are the
best one to interpret your dreams. I have tried interpreting other dreams on the
group but in case you haven't read some of this information I will reiterate
here. Some dream symbols are universal dream symbols, which means it pretty much
means the same for everyone, such as driving, means physical life, water
emotions, etc. Other dream symbols are more personal and YOU have to see what
they symbolize to YOU. Write down all the parts of your dream, then what is the
first thing that you think of when thinking of this or that object, person,
place, etc. I have put a list together so that if the dream interpretation
doesn't click you can read over the "definitions" and see if any of it clicks
for you. Or make up your own. Also Colors, feelings, etc are VERY important to
dreaming. Do you remember what your mother painted on Amma's sari? How were you
feeling in the first, second, third dream? Go with your
feelings.




Church (Darshan Hall) - Need attunement within your inner temple. A need to
awaken awareness in acknowledgment of higher power.


Photo - How you are seeing things at this time; a picture to awaken a past
memory because the lesson you are going through now is one you did not learn in
the past.

Hug - Comfort, Loving and nurturing oneself. Healing

Camara - Perception of experiences; record of life to draw upon for learning.

First Dream

You walk in to the darshan hall, a time for attunement and awareness of your
higher self or a higher power, my guess here is that in your lucid dreaming, it
is saying PAY ATTENTION a spiritual lesson is coming up, your "tuning in to your
higher self". You are then taking photos of Mother hugging everyone. Are you
going through a lesson you have went through before but did not learn the first
time? Perhaps in another life even. Or are you stuck on this lesson. (A moment
frozen in time?) so to speak. Mother is hugging everyone, comforting and healing
them. When your photo developed, or your "lesson" developed, Amma looks directly
at your camera, your record of life to draw upon for learning, (draw upon our
Amma to learn this lesson) Learn to see the positive lesson for growth in every
live picture or experience, and your "photo album"(lesson or experience in life)
will be filled with the essence of joy and love. Although she was not looking at
your "lesson" in the past (or perhaps
you were not looking to her), she is looking at it with you now to let you know
she is with you. You then proceed to get your darshan, your healing and comfort.

Second Dream

Mouth - Verbalization, communication; express yourself. Source for nurturing and
sustenance.

In this dream you were asking Amma questions of importance to you. She is
telling you that you have lots of karma to work through but that she is going to
help you through them. She is communication with you, giving you a shot of
energy, quick pick me up, or healing. This dream seems pretty self explanatory
and defiantly more personal to you.

Third Dream

Cellphone - Communication, If you are calling someone you are asking for help.
If someone is calling you it usually represents your guidance trying to get your
attention with an important message. Look at any telephone dreams closely.

Drive - To drive and be in the driver's seat is to be in control of your life.
Note how you are driving, and your position in the vehicle. If you are not in
the driver's seat, ask who or what is running your life.

Girl - Female child part of self; usually the younger the child the more
sensitive. May mean to relax and play more, get in touch with your child.
Girlish attitudes. Creative, Intuitive, Receptive, Emotional, nurturing side of
self. Feelings. The unconscious. That which is open, can be penetrated or
entered.


7 - Mystical number marking beginnings and endings, cyclic periods for growth
and development: 7 Chakras, 7 Days to create the world, 7 Heavens, Every 7 years
is death and rebirth cycle.

Paint brush - Tool for creative self- expression

Ink - Creative expression; Recording or documenting something

Daughter - Feminine child part within self. Also qualities you project on your
own daughter; nature of relationship with daughter or person in that role.

Laughter - Healing, uplifting energy. Do not take yourself seriously; relax and
enjoy self and others.

Mother - Usually represents older, wiser more experienced part of female self.
Feelings you project on mother figure. If you have negative feelings, often
reflects hatred or resentment of own motherly self which gives away power to
others lack self love, takes care of others needs and neglects own.

You are in the darshan hall, again I think your higher-self is "waking you up"
and making you "aware" of another spiritual dream coming on. Your Mother calls
you, (your mother passed away a year ago) perhaps she is trying to communicate
with you and help you along in life. She is your guidance (your wiser self), and
she has an important message for you. You told HER to drive, are you in control
of your physical life here? If not who or what is? Are you feeling out of
control? In what way? Your wiser self reaches mothers arms and turns into a
little girl of seven (your younger sensitive self), open up and enter into the
lesson, relax, get in touch with your child (Amma is always saying this to all
of us) Perhaps this could be the beginning to an end of a hard lesson in life, a
death and rebirth. Amma hands the little girl a paint brush and some ink so that
you can creatively express yourself , you have unconscious potential and
abilities in life, use them. Amma is playing and laughing
with the little girl, relax in to life, don't be so serious. She is then
calling out "your daughter, your daughter". Do you have a daughter in waking
life? Perhaps the lessons that you are to learn are with her? Or some of YOUR
daughterly qualities need to be looked at?

This last dream was a little more difficult because I do not know you or
anything about you. But Amma calling out "your daughter, your daughter" this
seems like the key to me here. If you can figure out that, then you can figure
out the significance of the dream.

I also believe that your sequence of dreams is no coincidence, put together the
first one tells me that you have a lesson that you are stuck on that needs to be
learn, the second tells me that it may have earned you a lot of karma, but Amma
is there to bring you through it, and is doing some kind of "healing", the final
dream is the key I think, it holds the lesson that you are suppose to learn,
that you seem to be stuck on. It is up to you to figure that out.

I hope this helps in any way possible, I realize that some or all of it might be
incorrect, you need to go on your instincts and feelings and you really need to
find out this lesson so you can move on, and hopefully accumulate less karma.

you get ready for bed, have a pen and paper there with you, write down your
question, what ever that might be, "Amma what is this lesson I need to learn",
repeat this over again and again. Then go to sleep thinking about the question.
When you wake up write any dreams down, EVERY DETAIL. Do this every night until
your answer becomes clearer.

Since I have the same problem with you, knowing what to do with our
teenagers if we want to go to the retreat, maybe we can do some
brainstorming. Since I'll be doing some seva with teenagers during the
retreat, maybe you could ask your son what kind of activities he would like
to do if he were to come on the retreat. Maybe there are a bunch of us who
have children who aren't as interested in Amma as we are. Do you know of
any other people who might be liking to do this kind of seva, or know people
that might have some ideas on what kind of activities teenagers like to do?

Namah Shivaya,

I'll ask my son about what he would want to do at the retreat. He loves to
roller skate (there is a highly rated rink in San Ramon), play X-Box games &
Runescape (on-line roll playing game.) Maybe if we found others with
uninterested young teens, we parents could help eachother out with supervision
off-site during the retreat & take them to a movie, or something? I can quickly
think of at least one devotee who has a 13-year-old son who isn't interested in
Amma. The biggest difficulty would be getting my son to leave home in the first
place.
