Where the Mind is Without Fear
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;Where knowledge is
free;Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic
walls;Where words come out from the depth of truth;Where tireless striving
stretches its arms towards perfection:Where the clear stream of reason has not
lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;Where the mind is lead
forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action--Into that heaven of
freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
--Rabindranath Tagore, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.
Poems and Songs from Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali "I drive down into the
depth of the ocean""Ever in my life have I sought thee""The time that my
journey takes is long""The song that I came to sing remains unsung""Clouds heap
upon couds""In the deep shadows of the rainy July""On many an idle day have I
grieved over lost time."
A while back, when my mom came back from a visit to Bangladesh, she brought me
back a present from my uncle (my Chhotto Mama), who is a Bangla Professor at
Dhaka University. It was a book called "Selected Songs of Rabindranath Tagore".
It was filled with english translations of songs that I had grown up with. I was
delighted to finally know the meanings of all those songs. For those of you who
don't speak Bengali, or those of you who have never heard the original songs in
Bengali, I must warn you, a lot of the real meaning is lost in translation. As
with all great writers, these songs are best if read in the original language.
The songs are translated by Abu Rushd and published by Rabinda Charcha Kendra
of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Here are a few of my favorites.
"As my own eyes filled with tears...""The Earth of Bengal...""The moon's smile
has forsaken all restraint...""Even now I haven't seen him, only heard his
flute's note.""What is anxiety playmate?""On a rainy day the wind gets wild""My
days got restive of the golden cage""It is your beginning, this is my end-"
Here are 3 songs that I grew up singing. They are songs that probably all
Bengali children sing when they are little. They are about imagination, having
fun, and just being young.
"The rain has stopped and sun-light smiles on the clouds""In the rice-fields can
be seen today a hide and seek game""There is no one to stop me from getting lost
at anywhere at all."
