Default New to Ashtanga - Could use some advice

Hello Everyone!

I have been practicing various forms of yoga off and on for about six years.
Over the last year I have hardly practiced at all and have grown quite weak and
stiff. I've developed a very strong interest in Ashtanga yoga and would like to
return to my yoga practice by beginning an Ashtanga class.

Right now I am unemployed and cannot afford a class, though. I would like to
begin a home practice to regain some strength and flexability so that when I am
employed and can afford it I will be more prepared for the demands of a class.
Recently, someone posted to this list (my apologies, I don't remember who it
was) saying if he had it to do over again, he would focus on sun salutation in
the beginning to develop core strength and balance instead of trying to move
forward quickly into more advanced postures. This got me thinking that perhaps I
would benefit from a daily (with one day for rest) practice of purely sun
salutation until I am financially able to join a class. I've learned sun
salutation from previous yoga classes, so I would not be "learning it from a
book" but practicing something relatively familiar.

I practiced today for 30 minutes and found that I am even weaker than I thought!
But it felt great to practice again and I'm feeling excited about renewing my
practice.

Is there anything that any of you would suggest besides doing sun salutation?
Any other postures that would be beneficial and safe for someone that has not
practiced Ashtanga before?

Also, I have an old wrist injury that makes it painful to bend the wrist at the
angle required while in push-up position. I've been modifying it by making a
fist, sort of like "knuckle push-ups" because this allows me to keep my wrist
straight. I'm wondering if this is an acceptable modificaton or if there is a
better way to do it.

Thank you!

Asha

Sun Saluations are a great start. I would do those 6 days. Perhaps
start with 5 of A and 5 of B. Work up to 10 of each. Try to avoid
modifying too much. Do this for a while and that should help your
strength a lot. I would not recommend a modified Primary Series. Wait
until you can get to a teacher to avoid developing bad habits.
