I Am a Great Believer in God

My life has been full of ups and downs. Whenever there is a high point like
getting a Khel Ratna, or a low point, like being injured or not being included
in the team, I always feel that there is a Super Power that guides me,
strengthens me and holds me.
Spirituality, for me, is a way of life. The way I think, the way I behave
and the way I feel — all have the reflection of my spiritual self.
I am a great believer in God. I have faith in His power and believe that He
is a great healer. Today, whatever I am, I owe it to Him, for He has shown me
the light and held my hand when my chips were down.

Who would have thought that a poor boy from the bylanes of Khirkee in Pune
would go on to become a national star? When I first picked up a hockey stick,
all I had was enthusiasm and determination. Initially, all I wanted was to play
hockey for the sheer passion of the game but, later on, learning a livelihood
out of it became important too.

Though I have really worked hard to reach where I am, I feel that God has
been kind to me. I carry photos of Tirupati’s Balaji and Sai Baba in my
purse and a Shiva Linga in my bag. I worship them everyday, no matter where I
am. Be it India or abroad, I visit temples, gurudwaras, mosques and churches to
seek His blessings.

Normally, we remember God whenever things are adverse, but for me He is
part of daily life. There have been incidents where things have unexpectedly
turned favourable for me. I felt that God was with me all the way.
