Residents' associations urged to form family dev and support bureaus

PETALING JAYA Dec 4 - The Women and Family Development Ministry has
urged all residents' associations to form family development and
support bureaus in their respective housing areas in an effort to
inculcate good values in the family institution.

Its Minister, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, said societies and
movements involved in social work had also been asked to form
similar bureaus.

She said such bureaus could assist people facing problems within
their families.

"Such people always need a one-stop centre for them to spill out
whatever problems they have and bureaus such as these could be of
real help," she said.

Shahrizat was speaking to reporters after opening a seminar
entitled "Education on Children and Youth Character Building and
Successful Parenting" here Thursday.

The two-day seminar is organised by the Central Commitee of Sri
Sathya Sai Malaysia and is participated in by 700 people from
Singapore, Brunei, Thailand and Indonesia with speakers from
Australia, Thailand, Britain and South Africa.

Shahrizat said that through such bureaus, residents' associations
could assist neighbours in their areas or anyone with problems by
providing them with a place to share their problems.

This, she said, could also reduce the number of divorces, especially
among young couples.

"It's becoming a trend nowadays for couples to resort to divorce
rather than taking some time to discuss their differences," she
said.

Shahrizat also said that her Ministry was in the process of
producing more experts in the field of crisis management with
emphasis on marital and family problems in order to ensure that the
country's family institution remained strong.
