Default Hindu prayer at Iowa state legislature - 04-02-2006, 05:43 PM

Ragsdale: Historic prayer by Hindu priest touches on
faith's growth in Iowa
SHIRLEY RAGSDALE

March 25, 2006

Although it didn't receive a lot of fanfare, something
historic happened this month at the Capitol. For the
first time, a Hindu priest offered the opening prayer
at the legislative session in the Iowa House and
Senate.

Pandit Krishna Pandey prayed in Sanskrit and English
for brotherhood and peace in the universe.

That Pandey was invited and welcomed is a tribute to
lawmakers' recognition of Iowa's growing religious
diversity.

One of the prayers ("Twameva mata cha pita twameva..")
would be familiar to most people on this list.

Keval

namaste keval,

the governor of new jersey started his term in office early this year
by inviting about twenty clergy to say prayers. the whole thing was
on TV about two hours. while majority of clergy were christian, there
were a hindu swami, a couple of muslims, maybe three jewish, and a
sikh or two.

and recently, hilary said something about a "good samaritan" from the
bible; i don't follow politics and do not read newspapers; but just
happened to hear this.

interesting to notice these positive little things here and there.

amma's blessings,
amarnath
