When Circle of Love Inside, the program that writes suporting
letters of spiritual friendship to people in prison, first started,
Dixie was one of its first volunteers. She offered to write to the
first person in prison to whom I ever wrote, a woman on Death Row in
Pennsylvania. You all know what a wonderful writer Dixie was. She
and the women in prison in Pennsylvania shared a love of animals and
in the beginning of her correspondence with this prisoner, Dixie's
dog gave her litter of puppies. The puppy report was an important
item in their letters. Dixie emailed me one time that the full
impact of what imprisonment meant really hit her when she realized
that the woman to whom she was writing would never feel the breath
of a new puppy on her face. The final loss of this simple joy for
someone on Death Row brought Dixie to tears.

As Dixie became sicker, the woman in prison, who is a devout
Catholic, prayed for her every day. As Dixie became less able to
write, the woman in prison would ask me in her letters for news
about Dixie's health, always hoping for good news.

Over the months, it also happened that the Pennsylvania court
decided that this woman, on Death Row for nearly ten years, had not
had a fair trial, that there had been so many errors made in her
original trial that she should have a new hearing. Her attorney said
that most likely she would be released from prison after the
hearing. In what might have been Dixie's last message on the Yahoo
Group she asked if that woman had had her hearing. Yesterday I
wrote the sad news about Dixie's passing to this woman who still
awaits her day in court.

I didn't realize that Dixie was an English teacher. I was often
impressed by her ability to describe the ineffable, to put into
words the beyond-words experience of a hug from Amma. Her skill with
words made her messages, like the one about the puppy breath,
unforgettable.

For a long time Dixie was a letter recipient in the Circle of Love
Letters program, the community program that send letters of love and
support to people who are sick, grieving or isolated. She originally
signed up because, as she reported, there were only two Amma
devotees in the State of West Virginia and she didn't know the other
one. At one point, Circle of Love Letters became emails since
dealing with snial mail was increasingly difficult for her. Email
was much easier.

What a gift to have shared Dixie's last year with her!

Aikya

Namah Shivaya.
Thank you Aikya.
I feel like I am participating in a virtual memorial service,
by Ammašs grace.
