Namah Shivayah,

I just returned from the LA Retreat. Devi Bhava lasted until 11:30 a.m. with
token numbers going up to 6300! How does She do it?

Amma wore a magenta and gold sari. There were many blessings at the end,
including at least two marriages, although there may have been 3 or 4. The
crowd on the stage
precluded seeing clearly.

Here's a personal tidbit. My room just happened to be on the same floor as
Amma's.
I needed to go to my room after DB instead of doing what I usually do, waiting
for Her
to pass by. When I arrived at my floor though, a small group of people with
different
aged children were waiting for Amma, so I waited, too. She arrived ,looking
fresh, and
embraced the family that was waiting. There was a girl I didn't know waiting,
and I
couldn't really tell her ethnicity. Amma immeditately commented on the fact
that the
girl wasn't present when Amma sang "Ishwar Tumhi" in Chinese, and started off
down
the hall towards Her room, with her arm around the girl, singing "Iswar Tumhi"
in
Chinese! That Amma! And I thought She needed those papers with the words
written
on them!

Love,
Jyotsna

Hari Om Om Om

Dear Jyotsna,

thank you very much for sharing this with us. It is a jewel.

Do you have news to share about the question and answer session at
the L.A. retreat?

Also, during the retreats, when are the IAM refresher courses held,
and how much time do they take up ?

Do the refresher course participants miss out on any time spent in
the darshan hall with Amma?

Thank you very much.

In Amma' Love,
Sarama
(the Sara from Iceland who nows signs her posts as Sarama)

OM Namah Shivaya Sarama,
This is Ambujam, I attended the Seattle and San Ramon retreats and did
not take notes during the question and answer sessions but I do
remember one question about some spritual aspirants who smoke pot.
This is by no means verbatum- just the gist of what I recall... I
have heard her answer this question before and she repeated much along
the same lines
Amma said that she will not tell her children not to do it as some
like it too much to quit but plenty of her children do find it easy to
give up the habit. She said she hoped people would look at the
problems in the world and try to help rather than escaping through
drugs. She said that it blocks/damages the nerves in the brain
creating a numbing effect rather than the expansive one it feels to
be, making one think they are having a spiritual experience when
really they are not. She said it was like a dog chewing on a bone so
much that his gums bleed but he thinks he is getting nourishment from
the bone itself. Last time I heard her anwer it , She was likening it
to rowing a boat all night long, only to find with the oncoming light
of day that the boat was still tied to the dock.
Another time, a girl asked a question, Amma, is it possible to conquer
even one vasana in a lifetime. Amma laughed and Swamiji joked with the
girl about how her vasana couldnt possibly be overspending on
luxurious clothes and something else. Amma said she knew that the
other young people this girls age were into partying and instead the
girl had chosen to be here which said alot for her. Then Amma boldly
stated in front of all that She knew the girl was not referring to
this or that but that that she was referring to her sexual vasanas.
Amma said something like even when people are seventy five, they still
have this sexual desire. I cant remember the rest but it seems like
She was encouraging to just accept and know that we are trying our
best to work with/against our human nature in balance.
For me this time, the focus was on the silence beyond the questions,
even though the q+a still makes me feel closer to Mother, Swami gave a
whole speech on how nonsensical all this talk is...ooooooooommmmmmmmm
Anyway, I hope this helps a little.

At Her Feet,
Ambujam

Dearest Sara,

I'll try to answer your questions.

Do you have news to share about the question and answer session at
the L.A. retreat?

I do have some notes from the q&a at the LA retreat, but right
now I seem not to be finding them. I'm getting ready to leave
tomorrow for Texas, including the Texas programs.

One story told at the retreat made a big impression on me.
Once there were two men who wanted to test whose prayers were more powerful.
They went to a desert island and one took one
half of the island and the other took the other half. The man on one side (I'll
call him Man A) prayed for fruit trees to spring forth on his side and lo, fruit
trees bearing fruit appeared. Then Man A prayed for companionship, and soon a
woman who had been shipwrecked came ashore on his part of the island. In the
meantime, Man B's side of the island remained
barren. Finally, Man A prayed to be rescued and taken back
to his home, and soon a ship appreared and stopped to pick up him and his lady
friend. Man A was asked if he didn't want to take Man B off the island with
him. "No," he said, "None of
that guy's prayers were answered. He's worthless." But the
truth of the situation was that Man B all that time had been praying that Man
A's prayers be answered, and was not praying for himself at all. Man A's
prayers were answered because of
the prayers of Man B. Thus, Amma said, we never know why our prayers are
answered. It may well be that it's someone else's
prayers that have made your life better, not your own.

Also, during the retreats, when are the IAM refresher courses held,
and how much time do they take up ?

The one in LA was after the second day a.m. program. It took
about an hour and a half, I think. In LA, the regular IAM
class, which was large, was waiting for us to finish using
the room.

Do the refresher course participants miss out on any time spent in
the darshan hall with Amma?

Not too much. It was after lunch on the 2nd day. I was
having a lot of ambulatory problems, so I went straight
from lunch. I think the program was over about the time
the refresher course started.

In Amma' Love,
Jyotsna
