Reincarnation (was: God Bless America)
Dear Jan,
are you seriously suggesting that these musicians were in samadhi, and that
coming out of this experience was inducing them to take drugs?
Jan, I am just a little devotee, but having felt even a tiny amount of the
love of God in meditation I can tell you truthfully that coming out of that
state one doesn't feel the least bit frustrated. Rather, the heart sings
with joy as one goes about ones daily duties.
How much more would this be true for those who have reached even the lower
states of samadhi, where heart and breath stop completely and the yogi is
locked in the blissful union with the Divine.
It is true that sometimes people go after fake joys like drugs and wine out
of frustration with this dreary earthly existence, and we can sympathize
with them, and should try to help them as best we can. But their state is as
different from samadhi as night and day.
Warmly,
Michael

Patanjali describes all possible samadhis and many of them are "waking"
types:
they happen while absorbed in 'work'. This can be extremely blissful so when
coming out of it, that feels terrible, and without proper knowledge, that
could
lead to the use of drugs, eating disorders, booze, just to fill the void....
Not a surprise at all - what is sad is that the mechanism
isn't recognized, even by those, supposedly 'realized' yogis.
Peace,
Jan

There are many types of savikalpa samadhi and any artist
has to be familiar with at least a few of them
The want to continue the experience without "the effort"
is what leads to seeking substitutes - not necessarily drugs.

Some musicians are playing in a kind of trance state - one of the many types
of savikalpa samadhi. God has nothing to do with that - those states of mind
were known before the term "samadhi" was coined for them.

For a musician, breathing and heart will continue to function.
Every samadhi has a beginning hence an end so not something
to be looked for. Not without reason, the Buddha warned against
it and he must have been aware of the fact that walking samadhis
are much more intense then the "world-excluded" types as also
the side-effects can be rather spectacular. Something i know too.

Savikalpa samadhis are not at all an exclusivity of yoga but, au contraire,
rather ordinary experiences of onepointedness, concentration, simultaneously
forgetting "i and you", the world, everything to the exclusion of "the act of
performing". And Purohit Swami, in his comments on the Patanjali Sutras (IV),
mentions the use of certain herbal preparations to awaken spiritual powers.
The use of peyote in Mexico, every continent has its recipes. From there to
drugs is a matter of market economy.

Jan
