Default Cultural question : the zen monk's staff

In film and literature I have often seen Japanese zen monks being
shown carrying a long metal staff ending in a hoop with two other a
metal rings hanging inside the main hoop.

Does anyone know the symbolism behind the three rings ?

Is this staff still used by modern day Japansese zen Buddhists ?

On beforehand thanks,

Amanda.
