All glories to Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Who has appeared as the son of Mother Sachi in the holy land of Navadvipa dhama! All glories to Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu Who is mad in ecstatic love of Krishna! All glories to Sri Advaita Prabhu, and all glories to Gadadhara Prabhu and Srivas Pandit! All glories to Navadvipa dhama, the cream of all the holy dhamas! All glories to the sacred residents of Navadvipa who are all eternal associates of Lord Sri Chaitanya!
Taking shelter at the lotus feet of the pure devotees of the Lord with respectful obeisances, I now will begin the brief explanation of Navadvipa dhama and its glories. The sacred land of Navadvipa Mandala possesses unlimited transcendental glories which even great demigods like Lord Brahma, Shiva and others cannot fully comprehend. Therefore, who is capable of describing them? The divine Ananta Sesa incarnation of the Lord with thousands of heads singing simultaneously the glories of Navadvipa Dhama is not capable of describing all of its glories. Then how can I, an insignificant living entity, possibly be capable of doing so? Without a doubt, the glories of Navadvipa are unlimited, as even holy saints, great demigods, and even Lord Siva do not find any limit to its glories. However, the personal desire of the Supreme Lord Sri Chaitanya is more powerful than anything.
It is under the control of that personal desire of the Lord that His pure devotees give their transcendental commands. Thus, since it is the personal desire of Lord Sri Chaitanya that the glories of Navadvipa should be described, the devotees have ordered me to do so accordingly, and thus being empowered by their order, I am able to relate the glories of Navadvipa Dham by their mercy.
In this regard there is one other subject matter which is extremely confidential. Although I have no personal desire to discuss this topic, on the other hand it cannot remain untold. Lord Sri Chaitanya ordered His pure devotees that after His departure from this material world, the transcendental glories of the holy dhama (the transcendental place of His pastimes and appearance) and lila (transcendental pastimes) of the Lord should be broadcast. Of all the incarnations of the Supreme Lord, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's incarnation is the most confidential and mysterious, yet nonetheless, as He is the Lord of my life, I know His glories.
The confidential pastimes of the Supreme Lord are described in the revealed scriptures in a confidential form that is understandable by His pure devotees alone, while the nondevotee scholars are unable to comprehend the real significance of those descriptions. Although the information regarding the transcendental pastimes and appearance of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was ever existent within the revealed Vedic scriptures, Mayadevi, the illusory potency of the Lord, has kept these confidential scriptural references covered from the understanding of the nondevotees of the Lord. In various places, there are many authorized scriptures still undiscovered which contain many transcendental evidences about the birth and appearance of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His holy dhama, Navadvipa. In the already known revealed Vedic scriptures, there are many references to the pastimes of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the glories of Navadvipa dhama. The evidences of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Navadvipa dhama which are to be found in the above mentioned known Vedic scriptures as well as the authorized Vedic scriptures yet to be discovered, have been kept hidden for the time being from the perception of the nondevotee scholars by Mayadevi, the illusory potency of the Supreme Lord.
When Lord Gauranga had completed His confidential pastimes in this world and returned back to the spiritual sky, Mayadevi, His obedient maidservant, knowing the inner purpose and desire of the Lord, ended her deceitful activities and lifted the illusory covering from the eyes of the conditioned souls, broadcasting the hidden truths of Lord Chaitanya in this material world. Suddenly the authorized Vedic scriptures that had remained hidden for so long, as well as the evidences in the known revealed Vedic scriptures regarding Lord Chaitanya, became manifest before everyone's vision, thus removing all the obstacles for understanding the mysteries in relation to Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
All glories to the all-merciful Lord Nityananda Prabhu, Who has revealed the transcendental truths of Lord Gauranga in the hearts of the conditioned souls of this material world. Actually when Mayadevi, the illusory potency of the Lord, received the order from Lord Nityananda to lift the illusory covering sealing the truths about Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, then the sincere devotee scholars received the priceless treasures in the form of scriptural evidences regarding the mysteries of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Appearance. After understanding all of the evidences revealed by the mercy of Lord Nityananda from the authorized Vedic scriptures regarding the truth of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Navadvipa dhama, if someone still remains in doubt, then truly he is a most unfortunate soul. Why should such an unfortunate soul maintain his useless life?!
At the time when the Supreme Lord distributes His transcendental mercy, the highly fortunate souls are very happy to receive it and derive transcendental pleasure from it.
On the other hand, my dear readers, you all will be able to recognize when a person is highly unfortunate by the following symptoms: it is he who tries to understand everything by his own limited reasoning power, accepting his material intelligence to be supreme. Thus he refuses to accept the understanding of the revealed scriptures given by the Lord's mercy, and by wasting his time in useless arguments due to a poor fund of knowledge, he falls into the pitfalls of maya again and again.
"Come! Come, you Kali-yuga fallen souls! Give up your duplicity and false pride! But without delay take this priceless gift of pure ecstatic love for Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu!" Loudly call out Lord Nityananda Prabhu again and again! Still, in spite of such heart-rending calls, those falsely puffed-up and unfortunate persons do not accept. Why would anyone not affectionately and immediately embrace the opportunity to accept that priceless gift of pure and ecstatic love for God? Consider what I am about to say and you will immediately understand:
In this material world the fallen souls are busy creating their various theories, presenting their arguments and performing different processes of yoga, all in pursuit of happiness. They renounce this material world and flee away into the forest for penances and austerities, simply in pursuit of happiness. Rulers of one country wage war against the rulers of other countries in pursuit of happiness. People are running madly after beautiful women and wealth in pursuit of happiness. Artisans produce their products, and scientists make their discoveries all in pursuit of happiness. In pursuit of happiness, people give up happiness and learn to tolerate all kinds of misery. Jumping in the middle of the ocean, people drown and die, all in pursuit of happiness.
Lord Nityananda Prabhu calls out, raising His two lotus hands:
"Come, fallen souls! Giving up your attachment for your miserable fruitive work and mental speculation, come now! Since you are trying to get happiness, that is just what I will give you! And in exchange for that happiness, I won't take anything! For this there is no difficulty; it won't cost anything; and you don't have to suffer any pain. Without any care, simply sing out the holy names of Gauranga and dance in ecstasy! Thus I will give you a happiness for which you will never find an equal-- uninterrupted, pure transcendental ecstasy, which never fails to fully satisfy!"
In this way Lord Nityananda Prabhu is freely distributing prema, the pure liberated realization of ecstatic love for Godhead, to everyone. Those who, suffering under the effects of their previous sinful activities, do not want this inconceivable mercy, are simply unfortunate and nothing more. For those who chant the holy names of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu even one time, the unlimited results of all the sinful activities of their previous births are immediately washed away.
Now listen, all my readers, there is another confidential topic I will disclose. In this present Age of Kali, the treasure house of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's pastimes is the only means by which we can obtain the highest perfection of life. It is Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, known as Gaurahari, or the Golden Avatara, Who is in the sacred dhama of Vrindavana as Their Lordships Sri- Sri-Radha-Krishna, infinitely enjoying transcendental pastimes in association. From the revealed scriptures, the conditioned souls have learned the truths of the pastimes of Vrndavana. The glory of Vraja, or Vrndavana, is the eternal pastimes of Their Lordships Sri-Sri-Radha-Krishna.
The whole world knows from the evidence of Vedic scriptures that the transcendental glories of Lord Krishna's holy name are unlimited. However, in spite of these revelations, the people in general do not achieve the priceless jewel of pure love for Krishna, krsna-prema. Kindly consider what is the cause for this. For this paradox there is important spiritual truth, Conditioned fallen souls being overwhelmed by the material illusion are not able to comprehend. Worshipping Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, continuously for many, many births, a devotee sometimes may fail to achieve pure love for Krishna. This is most certainly because that devotee has accumulated piles of offenses in his devotional service. Being freed from all offenses, constantly chanting the holy name of Krishna. then one achieves continuous krsna-prema, or pure love for Krishna.
The symptoms of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabu's incarnation into this material world are unique and different, because by the mercy of Lord Chaitanya the fallen souls are able to achieve pure love for Krishna in spite of so many offenses. Offenses cannot obstruct one who loudly chants the holy names of "Nitai! Chaitanya!" Rather, pure krsna-prema is searching for such devotees whose eyes are always filled with tears of pure love for Krishna.
Chanting the holy names of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His eternal associates, one's offenses are quickly mitigated, and one's heart becomes completely purified. Since the fallen souls of this Age of Kali are under the burden of unlimited offenses against the Supreme Lord, there is no hope for their deliverance except chanting glories of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Therefore, the emphatic proclamation of the Vedic literatures is that in this Kali-yuga there is no other alternative than to take shelter at the lotus feet of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu has risen like the rising moon in the sacred land of Navadvipa. Navadvipa Dhama is the topmost of all pilgrimage places, being the most merciful of all. In other places of pilgrimage, an offender is severely punished, but in Navadvipa offenses are always being forgiven. For example, consider the two brothers, Jagai and Madhai. Although they committed grievous offenses, ultimately they received the shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Chaitanya and Nityananda Prabhu. Yet, when even in Vraja dhama, the sacred place of Krishna's pastimes, the offending demons are destroyed, there is no utility in discussing lesser places of pilgrimage. How will it be possible to be forgiven from offenses there? But in Navadvipa dhama, even if one commits hundreds and hundreds of offenses, by the mercy of Lord Nityananda Prabhu one easily obtains deliverance, achieving the supreme destination. For that reason, the great sages sing again and again the glories of Navadvipa dhama situated in the ancient provinces of Gaudamondal (Northern India, or Bengal).
Similarly, my dear brothers, one who is a resident of Navadvipa dhama is the most fortunate of all because he gains ecstatic loving devotion for Krishna simply by residing there. What to speak about residing in Navadvipa, even if someone simply visits Navadvipa for some time, that person becomes freed from all offenses. "The sum total of all the pious results that one gets by making a pilgrimage to all of the holy places is achieved simply by remembering sacred Navadvipa dhama," sing the Vedic hymns. If one is able to even see Navadvipa dhama, then that fortunate soul receives the priceless gift of pure love for Krishna birth after birth. Devotees who visit Navadvipa dhama without pure devotion, but rather desire various material fruits in reward for their pilgrimage to Navadvipa dhama are also blessed, for they shall never be forced to take birth as a human being again.
The glories of Navadvipa dhama are revealed in the Vedic literatures. If one is so fortunate to wander about the sacred lands of Navadvipa dhama, he achieves the pious results of millions of Asvamedha sacrifices at his every step. By sitting in silent meditation on the mantra given by the spiritual master in Navadvipa dhama, one is delivered without delay because Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu personally takes the form of the meditator's mantra and delivers him. Therefore, in any other holy place what a yogi can achieve by performing various penances and austerities for a period of ten years can be achieved in Navadvipa by remaining for three nights. The liberation of brahma-jnana, or realization of the impersonal aspect of the Absolute Truth, that is achieved by residing in one of the various holy places of India, is achieved simply by taking one's bath one time in the sacred Bhagirathi Ganges river in Navadvipa dhama. In Navadvipa dhama one may easily get any of the five types of liberation, namely salokya (living on the same planet as the Lord), sarupya (having a transcendental form sililar to the Lord's), sarsti (having opulence almost equal with the Lord's), samipya (living in direct transcendental association with the Lord), or nirvana (merging into the existence of the Lord), even without being very knowledgeable about the transcendental science. It is in Navadvipa dhama that by simply falling down at the lotus feet of a pure devotee of Krishna, one is elevated to such an exalted position that personified material benediction and liberation stand like maidservants at the door ready to render services. The pure devotees, however, are not interested in these two attendants, and instead they kick them to drive them away, but even then these maidservants cannot give up the transcendental association of the lotus feet of the pure devotees, and they remain there without fleeing. What is the use of visiting the seven holy tirthas, my dear brothers, when what one can achieve in a hundred years in those holy places can be achieved simply by spending one night in Navadvipa dhama?!
Considering above reasons, Navadvipa dhama is the topmost amongst all the sacred places of the Lord's pastimes, and by taking shelter there in this Kali-yuga, age of Quarrel, the fallen souls in this universe get deliverance from the material bondage and go back to Godhead in pure Krishna consciousness. Thus Navadvipa dhama is perfectly rendering the greatest service to the residents of the dhama by bestowing upon them twin enlightenments: first, the cessation of all material miseries, and second, pure Krishna consciousness carrying one out of the material world back to the eternal abode of the Lord.
Praying to remain always in the cooling shade of the lotus feet of Their Lordships Sri-Sri-Nitai-Jahnava, always desiring Their mercy, that Bhaktivinode sings the glories of Navadvipa dhama, tasting nectar at every step.
Thus ends the first chapter of The Glories of Sri Navadvipa Dhama.
All glories to Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Who has appeared!
All glories to Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the eternal Lord of the sacred abode of Sri Navadvipa dhama, Who has appeared as the son of Mother Saci!
All glories to Lord Nityananda Avadhuta!
All glories to Sri Navadvipa Dham, the topmost of all transcendental abodes, where Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has descended into the material world!
The fruit that one achieves by living for one's whole life in all of the other holy abodes and places of pilgrimage can be achieved, my brother, in one day in the transcendental abode of Sri Navadvipa dhama.
May all you devotees of the Lord listen to the description of the circumambulation of Sri Navadvipa dhama.... and discussed in the Vedic literatures. The written words of the Vedic literatures (shastras), the spoken words of the pure devotees of the Lord (Vaishnavas), and the orders of the Lord--these three things are the most cherished treasures in my life. Taking shelter of these three authorities in transcendental knowledge, I am now going to explain the rules and regulations for visiting the abode of Sri Navadvipa dhama and the other holy places contained therein. Kindly listen, everyone, to these important discussions.
When Sri Jiva Goswami, the youngest of the six Goswamis and the nephew of Sri Rupa and Sanatana Goswamis, left his home for practicing Krishna consciousness, he cried out, "Nadiya! Nadiya!"--"Oh, Navadvipa dhama, oh, abode of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu!" being anxious due to feeling separation from the transcendental abode of the Lord. Since the moment he left Chandradvipa, his two lotus eyes were flowing with the water of tears of love continuously as he was walking along the roads to Sri Navadvipa dhama. In this transcendental mood, Sri Jiva Goswami repeatedly said, "Ha Gauranga - Nityananda! Oh, my Lords Sri Chaitanya and Nityananda Prabhus, You are the very life of Jiva Goswami! Oh, when will that day be mind, my Lords, when out of Your causeless mercy You will reveal Your transcendental forms to me! Oh! Oh, Sri Navadvipa Dham, topmost of all transcendental abodes of the Lord! When will I be able to see you!"
Sri Jiva Goswami was a handsome young man possessing all beautiful and auspicious bodily features, and to see him situated in the highest level of complete renunciation was the most wonderful sight! In this way, for some days the young Sri Jiva Goswami traveled until finally he reached the abode of Sri Navadvipa dhama, always permeated with the quality of pure love for Krishna. When he could see Sri Navadvipa dhama from a distance, he fell down like a stick in prostrated obeisances to the holy abode of the Lord, and being overwhelmed with transcendental ecstasies almost became unconscious. After a little he controlled his mind and proceeded. As he entered into Sri Navadvipa dhama, he was filled with transcendental ecstasy and the hairs all over his body were standing on end!
When he reached the Barakona bathing ghat, he began asking everyone, "Where is Lord Nityananda? Where may I see Him?!" Seeing Sri Jiva's transcendental mood, some great devotee immediately took him to where Lord Nityananda Prabhu was residing. In the meantime, Lord Nityananda Prabhu was laughing very loudly, and because Sri Jiva was going to come, He was feeling very happy inside. Then He gave the order to His servitors to bring Sri Jiva to Him. Immediately many Vaisnavas went to call Sri Jiva to come to the Lord. They could recognize Sri Jiva immediately when they saw his body being transformed by ecstatic symptoms of pure devotional service, and they called out to him, "Jiva! Jiva!" Everyone made him come. Someone stepped forward and, filled with great love, announced Lord Nityananda Prabhu's order to Jiva Goswami. No sooner did Jiva Goswami hear the transcendental name of Lord Nityananda Prabhu than he became overwhelmed with transcendental ecstasy and fell unconscious to the ground. However, he soon became conscious and got up saying, "I am most fortunate! Although I am the most insignificant and fallen soul, I have received the mercy of Lord Nityananda Prabhu!" Then Jiva Goswami offered respectfully his prostrated obeisances to all of the Vaishnava devotees present, and as he was offering them obeisances, Sri Jiva's heart became overwhelmed with happiness.
Sri Jiva Goswami said, "Out of your causeless mercy, you have been most kind to me! All the Vedic literatures reveal that to achieve the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda Prabhu is the greatest good fortune!" Sri Jiva Goswami, being overwhelmed with his good fortune, celebrated by taking the dust of the lotus feet of some of the Vaisnavas present. Then everyone together took Sri Jiva Goswami where Lord Nityananda was. Surrounded on all sides by pure devotees, Lord Nityananda Prabhu was discussing the topics of Krishna (krsna-katha). When he saw the transcendental form of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, Sri Jiva Goswami's own body became exceedingly beautiful, being overwhelmed with transcendental ecstaties in love of Godhead. Sri Jiva Goswami said, "What a beautiful form I have seen today!" Being overwhelmed, Sri Jiva Goswami fell unconscious on the ground.
Absorbed in a mood of great mercy, Sri Nityananda Raya raised Jiva Goswami from the ground and gave him the shelter of His own lotus feet. Sri Jiva Goswami quickly stood up, and with folded hands he offered the following prayers unto Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, "You are the same divine universal form! You are the shelter of all the universes! You are Lord Sri Balarama, the original expansion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I am an insignificant jiva (soul). How can I understand you, my Lord, Who possesses unlimited transcendental qualities? You are my eternal master, and I am Your eternal servant! My only desire is to always reside in the shelter of the shade of Your lotus feet! Whoever You give Your causeless mercy to easily achieves the shelter of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and thus is swept away in the flood waters of pure love for Godhead, but without Your mercy no one can achieve the lotus feet of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu even if they worship His lotus feet for a hundred births! Even if Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu intends to punish someone, and if You protect that person, then he is saved! On the other hand, those offenders whom You punish are also punished by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Therefore, my Lord, I have accepted the shelter of Your lotus feet in complete surrender on the strength of my accumulated devotional assets. Kindly have Your mercy upon me! Give me Your blessing that I may see with pure spiritual vision Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and that I may have spontaneous ecstatic loving devotion for that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu known as the Golden Avatar, Lord Gauranga!"
When Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited the village of Ramakeli, my two maternal uncles (Sri Rupa Goswami and Sri Sanatana Goswami) accepted the shelter of the Lord's lotus feet. At that time I was merely a small child, but I forgot myself when I saw the beautiful golden form of Lord Chaitanya, and my eyes filled with tears of love. Even now that transcendental sight always awakens in my mind! Then I fell grabbing on the lotus feet of Lord Sri Gauranga and offered prayers. Touching the completely spiritual body of the Lord gave me immense spiritual bliss. At that time Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said unto me, 'Oh, Jiva! You should study all of the Vedic literatures, and after completing all of your studies, you should go to My abode, Sri Navadvipa dhama, where you will achieve the abode of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, and by His transcendental mercy you will achieve everything.'
"I accepted that order of the Lord on my head, and although I am insignificant and possess nothing, I gained an education to the best of my ability. At the place known as Candradvipa, I studied Sanskrit literature and all related studies, but I couldn't find a professor of Vedanta to my liking. However, the Lord has given me the order to study Vedanta and to broadcast the glories of pure devotional service to Krishna which is authorized according to Vedanta philosophy. Thus I have now come to this abode of Sri Navadvipa dhama at the shelter of Your lotus feet. I shall act exactly according to Your instructions. If Your order is that I go to Sri Kshetra, Jagannatha Puri, under the shelter of the Lord's lotus feet, then I can study Vedanta at the house of Sri Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya."
Hearing the sweet words of Sri Jiva Goswami, Lord Nityananda Prabhu embraced him and sat him on His lap, and no longer being able to contain Himself cried in ecstatic love! Lord Nityananda Prabhu said, "Listen to what I am about to tell you, oh, Jiva Goswami, for this is the most confidential information. Sri Rupa Goswami and Sri Sanatana Goswami have realized all of the transcendental truths of the Absolute Truth. Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu gave Me this instruction to tell you: 'Don't go to Jagannatha Puri (Sri Kshetra), and don't remain here.' You and the two brothers, Sri Rupa Goswami and Sri Sanatana Goswami, are all single-pointed pure devotees of the Lord, and this is known by all. The Lord's order to you is that you should go to Varanasi and study Vedanta from the great pandit, Vachaspati. After completing your studies, you should at once go from there to Vrindavana dham, the eternal abode of Lord Sri Krishna's pastimes (in north India), and there Sri Rupa and Sanatana Goswamis will have their transcendental mercy upon you.
"As the followers of Sri Rupa Goswmi establish the worship of Sri-Sri-Radha-Krishna in conjugal love as the end of spiritual knowledge through the presentations of Vedanta and other revealed scriptures and Vedic literatures, the Srimad Bhagavatam is the topmost of all Vedic literatures. Establish through your preaching that it is the ripened commentary of the Vedanta-sutra (of Lord Vyasadeva, the literary incarnation of Godhead who wrote all of the Vedic literatures). Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had given His causeless mercy to Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya by explaining the Brahma-sutra (Vedanta-sutra) following directly the natural commentary of the Srimad Bhagavatam (as written by Vyasadeva, the himself the author of the Vedanta-sutra). That transcendental knowledge was taught by Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya to Sri Madhusudana (...) at Jagannatha Puri (Sri Ksetra dhama) with great care and attention. Sri Madhusudana, who is also known as Madhuvacaspati, or Vacaspati for short, was ordered by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to go to Varanasi, the famous holy place, and since then he is residing there. Go there and you will surely find him.
"Externally Madhusudana Vachaspati appears to be in the disciplic succession of the followers of the Vedanta, and he teaches the sannyasis initiated in the Sankaracharya sampradaya or disciplic succession in the knowledge of Vedanta-sutra. Gradually he shows these impersonalist sannyasis compassion and teaches them the explanation of Vedanta-sutra as propounded by Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu during His classes on the Vedanta-sutra.
"Now a separate commentary on the Vedanta-sutra is not required. Simply explain how the Srimad Bhagavatam, the great Purana, is to be accepted as the natural commentary on the Vedanta-sutra. When, in due course of time, need of a direct commentary on the Vedanta-sutra will be necessary, at that tiome the commentary known as the "Sri Govinda Bhasya" commentary will appear. Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya's relative, Sri Gopinath Acharya, will also hear Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's explanation and commentaries on the Vedanta-sutra along with Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya. In due course of time, according to the wish of the Lord, Gopinath Acharya will again take birth in the world as Baladeva Vidyabhusana, and at that time he will go to Jaipur and there reveal the commentary on the Vedanta-sutra known as the commentary spoken by Sri Govinda, the Supreme Personality of Godhead (Krishna). In this way he will do a great service to Lord Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu by delivering the fallen souls from the darkness of material ignorance. All of these confidential subject matters shall be further explained to you by both Sri Rupa Goswami and Sri Sanatana Goswami in Vrindavana dhama."
Hearing the transcendental words of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, Sri Jiva Goswami became overwhelmed with transcendental ecstasy. Loudly crying, he fell on the ground and, losing all external consciouness, was rolling back and forth while he was weeping. ¨Lord Nityananda Prabhu, feeling great compassion, in mercy to Sri Jiva Goswami placed His two lotus feet on the head of Sri Jiva, thus giving him the blessing of great transcendental strength. "All glories to Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, known as Lord Sri Gauranga, the Golden Avatar! All glories to Lord Nityananda Raya!" Sri Jiva Goswami shouted loudly and began to dance in ecstasy there amongst the assembled devotees of the Lord. At that time Srivas Thakur (of the Panca-tattva) and many other personal associates of the Lord were present. All of these powerful devotees of the Lord were fortunate to see the wonderful pastime of Lord Nityananda Prabhu bestowing His causeless mercy upon Sri Jiva Goswami. Seeing the unlimited mercy of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, they also became overwhelmed in ecstasy, and everyone began to dance and sing out loudly the Holy Names of Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Lord Nityananda Prabhu: "Sri Gauranga! Nityananda!" Thus a tumultuous sound arose from the place which was resounding with transcendental vibration, filled with the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord.
After some time, the ecstatic chanting and dancing ended, and then Lord Nityananda Prabhu took Jiva Goswami and sat down together with him. Jiva Goswami was given residential quarters at the house and garden of Srivas Pandit. At sunset Jiva Goswami again went to take audience and transcendental association of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, whom he found sitting privately expounding the glories of Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's transcendental pastimes, qualities, etc. Sri Jiva Goswami immediately came forward and fell down, paying his obeisances at the feet of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. Showing compassion on him, Nityananda Prabhu gave him a seat close to Himself. Jiva Goswami, with folded hands, began to pray in great humility, "Oh, Lord Nityananda Prabhu, please have Your mercy upon me and explain to me the transcendental truths of this sacred abode of Sri Navadvipa Dham, explaining them in detail."
Lord Nityananda Prabhu said, "Oh, my dear Jiva Goswami, I will explain the glories of Sri Navadvipa dhama and related subjects to you, but the most confidential subject matters you must keep to yourself and not tell others. These subject matters are not to be broadcast to the people in general during the period when the pastimes of the Lord are being performed in this world. After the Lord's pastimes in this world are no longer visible to the people in general, then all of the secrets about the Lord, His pastimes, and His sacred abodes may be revealed.
Of all of the sacred abodes of the Lord, this abode of Sri Navadvipa dhama is situated on the topmost level of spiritual existence. Its existence lies far beyond the Viraja River separating the material worlds from the spiritual sky, and also far beyond the impersonal Brahman effulgence which is emanating from the spiritual planets known as Vaikunthalokas. After crossing beyond the self-effulgent Vaikuntha planets of the spiritual sky, one comes to the highest region of the spiritual sky to the spiritual planet called Krishnaloka. Within Krishnaloka the highest of all places is known as Sri Gokula and is also called Svetadvip, Sri Goloka, and Vrndavana. In this topmost spiritual planet, there are two distinct mellows of loving reciprocation between Krishna and His devotees, namely madhurya- bhava, or loving exchanges in the mood of conjugal loving affairs. and audarya-bhava, the loving ecstasy manifested by Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with His associates. The transcendental mellow of audarya exists fully within the transcendental mellow of madhurya or conjugal loving affairs, and the mellow of madhurya loving exchanges is contained fully within audarya, the mellow of unlimited transcendental mercy and compassion (exhibited in Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's freely distributing the priceless gem of pure love of Krishna to the fallen conditioned souls). Nevertheless, that part of Krishnaloka, the supreme planet in the spiritual sky, where madhurya conjugal loving affairs are most prominent is known as Vrindavana by the fully realized and highly fortunate devotees of Lord Sri Krishna. On the other hand, that eternal abode where the Lord of unlimited mercy and compassion, in distributing pure love for Godhead, is most prominent is glorified by all the Vedic literatures as Navadvipa dhama, which is also ever-existing in the Krishnaloka spiritual abode. The spiritual abodes of Sri Vrindavana dhama and Sri Navadvipa dhama are non-different, being on the same absolute platform. Only when considering the flavors of relishing different transcendental mellows, amorous pastimes, and magnanimous pastimes, are the characteristics of these two supreme abodes seen differently. Otherwise they are one.
"The transcendental abodes of Lord Sri Krishna, Sri Vrindavana dhama and Sri Navadvipa dhama, are eternally liberated, situated in transcendence without any material tinge, being made of the fully conscious cit-sakti energy of the Lord; and are unlimited, being all-pervasive in nature. These eternal abodes of the Lord can never be approached by the materialistic mentality of non- devotees. Neither can they understand their real nature, as these spiritual truths are only revealed to the devotees of the Lord. By the opulence and influence of Lord Krishna's transcendental pleasure potency known as the hladini potency, the living entities fallen to this material world give up this materialistic way of life and become situated in pure devotional service to the Lord. This is possible because they are simultaneously experiencing the transcendental pleasure potency of the Lord and achieving perfect knowledge, thus achieving their original constitutional position as eternal servitors of the Lord.
The whole abode of Sri Navadvipa dhama is manifested directed from the spiritual yogamaya potency of the Lord. There Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya descends into this material world as the Golden Avatar, Lord Sri Gauranga, and enjoys pastimes with His eternal associates. By ordinary material eyesight, the people in general see the holy abode and pastimes of the Lord as materialistic affairs of this temporary world because mahamaya or the illusory potency of the Lord conceals the real spiritual characteristic of this eternal abode of the Lord. the spiritual abode of Sri Navadvipa dhama is always beyond the influence of this mayamaya potency of the Lord and is also beyond the materialistic considerations of time and place. In other words, the abode of the Lord is transcendental to all the complications of this materialistic world and its conditioned souls. Yet on account of the karmic fruitive reactions produced by the living entity's materialistic activities, the living entity is controlled by the illusory energy and thus becomes bound up in this material world, and is therefore not able to see the real spiritual form of Sri Navadvipa dhama but instead sees the superficial material covering, thus mistaking it for an ordinary material place. It is when one is fortunate enough to get the association of pure devotees of the Lord that one's original spiritual love, prema, for Lord Krishna is awakened. Whenever this occurs, then a spiritually awakened person can see the real abode of Sri Navadvipa dhama, fully spiritual, alive, non-different from the Vaikuntha planets of the spiritual world. Thus with pure spiritual vision, the liberated soul situated in pure love of Godhead sees Navadvipa dhama as a transcendental land situated in eternal time, as an eternal abode of the Lord in which all of the objects are eternally liberated and made of spiritual energy. These things are easily seen when one achieves pure Krishna consciousness.
"Now, my dear Jiva Goswami, I have explained to you the eternal truths about the transcendental abode of the Lord ¨(manifesting in both the spiritual and material worlds), and specifically about Sri Navadvipa dhama. Now you may consider all that I have explained to you and try to understand these eternal truths with your consciousness in pure goodness (free from the material influence of goodness, passion and ignorance, i.e., transcendentally situated above the three modes of material nature)."
Thus this Bhaktivinoda, who is ever-aspiring for the eternal shelter of the lotus feet of Their Lordships Sri-Sri-Jahnava- Nitai, propagates these most confidential truths of Sri Navadvipa dhama.
Thus ends the translation by the humble servant of His Divine Grace Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada to Srila Bhaktivinode Thakura's compilation of the Fourth Chapter of the Navadvipa Mahatmya, entitled "Sri Jiva Goswami Hears Confidential Subject Matters About the Spiritual Abode."
All glories to Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Who has appeared as the son of Mother Saci! All glories to Lord Nityananda Prabhu, Who is the very life and soul of Sri Jahnava Devi! All glories to the topmost of all spiritual abodes, Sri Navadvipaa dhama, where the Golden Avatar, Sri Krishna Chaitanya, appears in this Kali-yuga, the iron age of irreligion.
Kindly listen. Lord Nityananda Prabhu is speaking: "The abode Sri Navadvipaa dhama is the same size as its counterpart, Vrindavana dhama, the sacred abode of Lord Krishna's childhood pastimes, namely 16 krosa (32 miles) in circumference. Within the 16 krosa (32 mile) perimeter of Sri Navadvipa dhama, a total of nine transcendental islands are situated, just as an eight- petalled lotus floats in the water. The eight petals of the lotus flower are eight of the transcendental islands, and the center is the island known as Antardvipa. The exact middle point of this center island of Antardvipa is known as Sri Mayapur. Sri Mayapur is also known as the Lord's Yogapith, or the place where the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, descending from the spiritual world, first contacts or appears in this material world. This abode, Sri Mayapur dhama, is ever-existing as the replica of Goloka in the spiritual world, as here the multitude of Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's eternal pastimes are being performed in various moods of devotional service. The circumference of Sri Mayapur dhama is proven to be 3,000 dhanus (3.5 miles oblique) and 1,000 dhanus in diameter, according to the revealed scriptures.
"The Pancatattva, or the five personal manifestations of the Absolute Truth, namely Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Lord Nityananda Prabhu, Lord Sri Advaita, Sri Gadadhara Prabhu, and Sri Srivas Pandit, are seated in the middle of the Yogapith, appearance place of the Lord. Compared to other places, the exact location and glories of the appearance place of Lord Sri Chaitanya shall quickly become hidden according to the transcendental desire of the Lord, and thus the people in general will no longer know this location. This shall happen when the rising flood waters of the Ganges River, known as the Bhagirathi, shall flood and cause everything to become almost completely covered. However, again according to the powerful desire of the Supreme Lord, the flood waters of the Ganges shall recede, and the spiritual abode shall again appear along with its islands. The eternal abode of the Lord sometimes disappears but never is permanently lost. Rather, it appears again in due course of time.
The Spiritual Abode of Sri Mayapur
"The spiritual abode of Sri Mayapur is situated on the eastern bank of the sacred Ganges River, known as the Bhagirathi in the Vedic literatures. There in Sri Mayapur lives my eternal master and worshipable Lord, Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. According to worldly vision, Lord Sri Chaitanya, who is known as Visvambhara, apparently accepted the renounced order of sannyasa and left His abode in Sri Navadvipa dhama to travel throughout different lands. But in reality my golden Lord Sri Chaitanya never leaves the perimeter of Sri Navadvipa dhama nor the village of Sri Mayapur (just as Lord Sri Krishna never leaves the abode of Sri Vrindavana dhama). In fact, the dear devotees of the Lord see the transcendental pastimes of the Lord in Sri Navadvipa dhama being performed just as continuously. Oh, Jiva Goswami, now you too also look! See Sri Chaitanya in His form as Lord Gauranga dancing!"
"In the spiritual abode known as Sri Mayapur, the central island (of Sri Navadvipa dhama), known as Antardvipa, is beautifully situated. It is in this spiritual island of Antardvipa that Lord Brahma (the creator and first living entity in the universe) was able to see the transcendental form of Lord Sri Gauranga. Oh, listen, my dear Jiva Goswami, if you want to see all of the transcendental places of the Lord's eternal pastimes, then you should definitely perform the circumambulation (parikrama) of the holy abode, and by this means you shall become successful."
When Jiva Goswami heard the divine instructions of Lord Nityananda, his eyes were filled with tears of love. He fell on the ground like a stick, paying his obeisances unto the lotus feet of the Lord. Then he prayed, "Oh, my Lord, if You have Your causeless mercy upon this poor and insignificant soul, then I beg You to kindly take me along with You, personally taking me on the circumambulation of Sri Navadvipa dhama!"
Hearing the prayer of Jiva Goswami, Lord Nityananda Prabhu agreed by saying, "Tathastu" ("So be it"). Then Lord Nityananda Prabhu said, "Oh, Jiva Goswami, first let us see Sri Mayapur, as tomorrow we shall tour many places." Saying this, Lord Nityananda Prabhu arose and started to walk away. Then Jiva Goswami, overjoyed, jumped up and followed closely behind Lord Nityananda Prabhu.
Lord Nityananda Prabhu was moving very slowly and gracefully, and due to His being filled with pure love for Lord Sri Chaitanya, His transcendental body became overwhelmed with ecstatic symptoms. The all-enchanting form of Lord Nityananda Prabhu was swept with waves of transcendental ecstasy, and this caused the ornaments of gold and jewels covering His body to sparkle and glitter beautifully as they moved. The lotus feet of Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu (Who is non-different from Lord Baladeva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead) are the objects of intense meditation by Lord Brahma and Lord Siva, who in spite of their intense meditation are not able to directly see these lotus feet. Now those lotus feet are giving their transcendental mercy to Sri Jiva Goswami by walking before him. Sri Jiva Goswami, remaining behind, reaches down and takes the sacred dust from the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda Prabhu and then anoints his entire body with this lotus foot dust, proceeding forward in a great festive mood.
The House of Jagannath Misra
Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu entered the house of Sri Jagannatha Misra, the father of Lord Sri Chaitanya, followed by Sri Jiva Goswami. Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu introduced Sri Jiva Goswami to the lotus feet of Sri Sachi Devi, the mother of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and said the following affectionate words, "My dear mother, now see here, this is the exalted Sri Jiva Goswami. He is the highly fortunate confidential servitor of your son, Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu!"
As Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu was speaking, Sri Jiva Goswami became overwhelmed with transcendental emotion. Being stunned in ecstasy, he suddenly fainted and crashed to the ground like a tree uprooted in a big windstorm. Sri Jiva Goswami offered his prostrated obeisances at the lotus feet of Mother Saci, and being filled with ecstasy, he began to roll back and forth on the ground. His body became transformed by the eight symptoms of ecstatic love for Godhead (crying, quivering in the body, hair standing on end, laughing, etc.) very intensely and loudly. The divine mother, Sri Saci Devi, showed her causeless mercy upon the young Sri Jiva Goswami and blessed him.
That day Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu and Sri Jiva Goswami received their mid-day meal of pure Krishna prasadam (sanctified foodstuff ofered to Lord Krishna) there in the house of Mother Saci. Mother Vishnupriya Devi, the consort of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, began to cook various kinds of vegetables, chutneys, etc., and rice under the instruction of Mother Sachi Devi. After the cooking was completed, a great devotee by the name of Sri Vamsivadana Prabhu took the preparations on the offering plate and offered everything to the Deity of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with great devotion. Another devotee, Isan Thakura, prepared the sitting place for Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu, Who quickly sat down and ate the prasadam in great transcendental pleasure. Mother Saci, being filled with maternal affection, said to Lord Nityananda Prabhu, "Eat, my child Nityananda, here at the home of Your mother. Here I have been secretly feeding Gauracandra, and if You also accept prasad here, I will be very happy!"
Honoring the words of Mother Saci, Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu ate the prasadam with great pleasure, and after he was finished, Sri Jiva Goswami ate the remnants of His mahaprasad. Sri Jiva Goswami said, "Now I am most fortunate! Here in the house of Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, in the sacred abode of Sri Mayapur dhama, I have taken the mahaprasad rice prepared by Mother Saci."
After the mahaprasad dinner was complete, Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu offered His respects to the lotus feet of Mother Sachi Devi and, taking leave, departed. Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu took Sri Vamsivadana Prabhu (the personal attendant at Mother Saci's house) along with them. Sri Jiva Goswami offered his respectful obeisances at the lotus feet of Sri Vamsivadana Prabhu. Lord Nityananda Prabhu said to Sri Jiva Goswami, "This Sri Vamsivadana Prabhu is known by all of the devotees as the dearmost flute of Lord Sri Krishna. It is the mercy of Lord Krishna's flute which creates intense attraction for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, in the heart of the individual souls, and everyone becomes thirsty for tasting the great mellow of transcendental ecstasy in devotional service. My dear Jiva Goswami, in this house our Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took Me and all of the associates and performed uncountable transcendental pastimes. See here the temple of Sri Jagannatha Misra where He used to perform His daily worship of the Vishnu Deity with great reverence and devotion. Here in this house He would serve (atithi), giving them all hospitality. Here behold the Pralisi shrine (pralisi-mandap) where Pralisi is worshipped. Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the maintainer of His devotees, observed all of the duties that were performed by His father as long as He remained in his household. Now, since Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has left, all the household affairs are under the responsibility of Sri Vamsivadana Thakura, who is assisted by Isan Prabhu in all the daily duties. And here at this place stood the great neem tree under which Lord Chaitanya was born. After the disappearance of the Lord, the tree also disappeared."
As Lord Nityananda Prabhu was describing the places of Lord Chaitanya's transcendental pastimes, He cried profusely in transcendental ecstasy, and as much as He was crying, Sri Jiva Goswami and Sri Vamsivadana Thakura also cried in love. As they were seeing all the transcendental places, Sri Srivas Prabhu also joined them, and then the four of them left the house of Sri Jagannatha Misra, the paternal home of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and proceeded to the north.
Sri Srivas-Angan
One hundred dhanus (one dhanu equals approximately six feet) to the north is the house and garden of Sri Srivas Thakura, known as Srivas-Angan. Lord Sri Nityananda Prabhu's attitude became very joyful as He showed Sri Jiva Goswami Srivas-Angan. Sri Jiva Goswami remembered the transcendental pastimes of the Lord (it is here that He danced every night will all of His devotees, congregationally chanting the holy names of Lord Krishna), and Jiva Goswami began rolling back and forth on the ground of Srivas- Angan where the Lord Himself had danced. When Sri Jiva Goswami rose, he was able to see an astonishing sight there before Him: Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with all of His intimate associates ¨was dancing in harinama sankirtan. The son of Sri Ballabh, Sri Jiva Goswami, saw the great sankirtan where, amidst all of the devotees, Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was performing the most beautiful dancing. There were Sri Advaita Prabhu, Sri Nityananda Prabhu, Gadadhara Prabhu, and Sri Haridas Thakura, all there dancing by his side. All the other devotees were singing loudly the holy names of the Lord. Suklambar Brahmacari was dancing along with hundreds and hundreds of devotees.
Seeing this transcendental vision, Sri Jiva Goswami became filled with ecstatic love for Godhead (Krishna prema), and being overwhelmed, he fell unconscious. When his consciousness returned, the vision of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His associates was no longer visible. Sri Jiva Goswami began to cry in separation of the Lord and His associates. As tears were pouring from his eyes, he called out, "Alas! Alas! Why was I not born even a little earlier?! It was not my good fortune to experience that transcendental ecstasy of chanting with Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu! By the causeless mercy of Prabhu Nityananda, which is boundless and unlimited, I was able to have this great fortune even for a moment. My desire is to remain here in Sri Mayapur dhama forever and in this way all of my material contaminations and attachments will become completely eradicated. Yet the desire of the servant is subordinate to the order of the master, and for this reason my heart is beating wildly with even the thought of leaving Sri Mayapur dhama!"
Lord Gouranga, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, after hearing the prayer of Lord Brahma, said the word "tathastu," thereby granting Lord Brahma the fulfillment of his wish. Lord Gouranga said, "During the time when I shall manifest my eternal pastimes here in this universe, you shall take birth in a family of meat eaters or "yavanas." Due to your fallen birth, you shall always consider yourself very insignificant, and you shall be free of all false ego and false pride. You shall be known as Haridas, or the servant of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the uplifter of His devotees. The Holy Name of Krishna shall dance on the tip of your tongue 300,000 times every day. At the end of your life, I shall be present with you, and as you leave your body you shall, in full concentration, have your vision fixed upon Me. Thus on the strength of these practices of devotional service, at the end of the second half of your life, you shall achieve the sacred abode of Sri Navadvipa Dham to relish eternally the nectar of devotional service.
"My dear Brahma, listen as the topics I am about to explain to you are very confidential. And I shall not reveal these anywhere and everywhere within the revealed scriptures. I shall appear in this world in the mood of a devotee, and I shall taste the nectar of devotion to Myself, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I shall propagate the rare transcendental process of sankirtan, the congregational chanting of the Holy Names. All of the various devotees who have assisted Me during My previous incarnations shall appear in this world to assist Me in My transcendental pastimes. I shall engage them in drinking the nectar of My Krishna pastimes of Braja Dham. Srimati Radharani's pure love shall be fixed within My heart. I shall make My appearance by having her ecstasy of devotional service and her bodily color. Whatever transcendental happiness Radharani experiences by engaging in my loving devotional service, that same transcendental ecstasy of devotional service shall be tasted by me, and when I adopt Radha's loving mood, from today you have become My disciple. In the form of Haridas, you shall serve Me constantly in devotional service."
After saying all this, Mahaprabhu disappeared from sight. Suddenly Lord Brahma fell upon the earth unconscious. Again awakening, Lord Brahma cried, "O my dear Gouranga, o friend of the fallen! O compassionate one to Your devotees! When shall I again achieve Your Lotus Feet?!" In this way, for many days Lord Brahma remained crying in separation of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Thereafter Lord Brahma, regaining control of his faculties, returned to his own planet, Brahmaloka, to organize his responsibilities as the Brahma, or creator, of this universe, to prepare for his appearance with Lord Chaitanya. The glories of Nadiya are being sung by this most unfortunate, insignificant fallen soul whose only desire in life is to achieve the eternal shelter at the lotus feet of Sri-Sri-Jahnava-Nityananda.
Thus ends the Fifth Chapter of The Glories of Sri Navadvipa Dham.
All glories to Lord Chaitanya, the son of Mother Saci. All glories to Lord Nityananda Prabhu, the life of Jahnava Devi! All glories to Lord Advaita, the husband of Mother Sita! All glories to Gadadhara Pandit, all glories to Srivas Pandit and all of Lord Chaitanya's eternal associates!
The following day at sunrise Lord Nityananda Prabhu left the house, taking Srivas Pandit and Sri Jiva with Him. They were accompanied by Ramdas and many other devotees who were performing sankirtan chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord as they were proceeding through Navadvip Dham.
Sri Ganganagar
When Lord Nityananda Prabhu reached the boundary of the island of Antardvip, then Lord Nityananda showed Sri Jiva the pastime place known as Sri Ganganagar. Lord Nityananda said, "My dear Jiva, listen. This is Ganganagar. It was established by the great King Bhagiratha who came in the Raghu Dynasty from Lord Sri Rama. When King Bhagiratha Maharaja was first bringing the Mother Ganges onto this planet and was forming the river course, driving in advance of the Ganges on his chariot, blowing his conch shell, the Ganges River was flowing fiercely behind him. When they reached the sacred abode of Navadvip Dham, suddenly the Ganges became stationary and did not move. When King Bhagiratha saw that the Ganges was not moving, he became overwhelmed with fear, and he came back to where the Ganges was stopped. Here at Ganganagar King Bhagiratha sat in meditation and performed austerities. When the Ganges became satisfied by his penances, she appeared directly before him. King Bhagiratha prayed, "My dear Mother Ganges, if you do not continue going to the sea where my ancestors' ashes are situated, my ancestors will never be delivered from their hellish situation." Mother Ganges replied, "My dear son, Bhagiratha, you are a brave warrior. Listen carefully to me. Remain here for a few days patiently. I have come to the sacred abode of Navadvip Dham during the month of Magh. At the end of the month of Phalgun, I shall go to the place of your ancestors. King Bhagiratha, I am the water which has washed the Lotus Feet of Lord Vishnu. Now I am in His own sacred abode, and this fully satisfies all my desires. The Lord appeared here on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun. On that day, my period of penance for the satisfaction of the Lord shall be complete. After completing this penance, I shall certainly accompany you. Of this you should not have any fear."
Here at Ganganagar the Lord of the Raghu Dynasty resided during the full moon day in the month of Phalgun. Whosoever takes bath in the sacred Ganges at Ganganagar on the full moon day during the month of Phalgun, worshipping Lord Sri Gouranga and observing fast, is delivered from this material world of birth and death, along with 1,000 generations of his previous ancestors. He attains the eternal abode of Sri Goloka Vrndaban in the spiritual world when he dies, irregardless of from what place he passes away in this world. This place has become unlimitedly more glorious also because Lord Sri Chaitanya has danced here in transcendental ecstasy many times. Also here are situated the houses of Gangadas and Sanjay das. Simply by seeing them, one always feels transcendental happiness.
Lake of Lord Prithu
Thereafter Lord Nityananda took Jiva Gosvami and His devotees to the east. There He showed a long pond and said, "See here to the east this long beautiful pond. Now I shall tell you the glories, o great scholar, of this sacred place. This is known as Ballal Diggi Ka, but in the Satya Yuga there are many descriptions of this lake made. The great king Prithu Maharaja was leveling the high and low places of the earth. His assistants tried to level this sacred place and a great effulgence started to emanate in all directions. Those who had been working immediately informed their king of this wonderful occurrence. The king came, and he was also able to see effulgence emanating from this place. Being the empowered incarnation of Godhead, or saktyavesh avatar, Prithu Maharaja engaged in meditation and was able to realize that this place was Navadvip Dham, the sacred abode of the Lord. With the intention of keeping the transcendental glories of this place secret at that time, Maharaja Prithu gave the order to dig a long, beautiful pond for enhancing the natural beauty of the place. This kunda, or man-made lake, became famous throughout the entire Navadvip Dham as Prithukunda. The water was sweet and pure, and all of the residents of the area would drink the water and they received so much transcendental happiness, how can I express that adequately in words.
"Much later, in this Kali Yuga, the great king Sri Lakshman Sena, found this pond in need of repair, and he redug the pond, making it larger and deeper. ( )hope for delivering his father, Ballala Sena, he named the pond after his father, calling it Ballala Diggi Ka, and thus it became known by that name."
Lord Nityananda took Jiva a little further and said, "Here, see this beautiful hill where are the ruins of the palace of the king Lakshman Sena, which is now broken due to the passing of time. In this way these great places of pilgrimage have been decorated and embellished by great kings throughout time who were inspired by the desire to achieve pious results for their actions. Later this place was desecrated by the yavana kings, by the king of the meat eaters. Therefore the devotees don't come here any more to perform their worship of the Lord. The earth is still most pure and sacred at this place, but due to the fear of contamination from the desecration of the yavana hordes, no one lives at this place. At this place the sacred Deity of the Lord or Sri Murti was desecrated and offended. Therefore, the devotees have given up this place as undesirable.
Visiting Simuliya Village
After saying all this, Lord Nityananda started to loudly roar, chanting the Holy Names of the Lord, and taking His party He came close to the village of Simuliya. Upon seeing Simuliya, the Lord told Jiva, "There, see, that is the island of Simantadvipa without a doubt. Simantadvipa is one of the nine islands of Navadvip, situated on the southern bank of the Ganges River on the far side of the abode of Navadvip Dham. This is accepted by all spiritual authorities. With the passing of time, the Ganges River will consume all of the land on this sacred island, and only a small area shall remain. This area shall be exceedingly beautiful. There in this place known as Simuliya, the materialistic person shall worship the demigoddess Parvati. Listen and I shall tell you the history behind this place.
"One time in the Satya Yuga, Lord Shiva was chanting the Holy Name of Sri Gauranga and dancing ecstatically. Seeing this, Parvati asked her husband, Lord Shiva, 'Kindly tell me, who is this Lord Gauranga whose name you are chanting? I have witnessed your astonishing dancing, and by hearing your chanting of the name Gauranga, my heart is melting in spiritual bliss.' All that I have heard in the way of mantra and tantra till now only leads to more entanglement for the living entities. Dear husband, please tell me something of this Gauranga. By worshipping Him I will receive actual life."
Shiva, hearing Parvati's words, and with Gauranga on his mind, answered: "Unto you, who are the primordial energy, one portion of Sri Radha, I will tell the crest jewel of all truths. Taking on the spiritual emotions of Sri Radha, Krishna will descend in this Kali-yuga at Mayapur as the son of Sachi. The Lord, the golden jewel, intoxicated with pastimes of kirtan, will distribute the jewel of prema. Just remembering that promise of the Lord that He will come, I pass my life drowning in love of God. Not being able to control myself, I have given up my own city of Kashi. Within Mayapur, on the bank of the Ganga, I will live in a hut and worship Gauranga."
Hearing Shiva's words, beautiful Parvati hastily went to Simantadvipa. Constantly meditating on the form of Gauranga, uttering the name of Gaura, she became immersed in prema. Gauranga, out to distribute His mercy, appeared with His associates. He was molten gold in complexion with long arms, wavy hair, and beautiful limbs. He was wearing a long dhoti folded thrice, and from his neck swung a garland of flowers, very attractive to behold.
Choked with prema, Gaura Raya said, "Oh Parvati, why have you come here?"
Parvati fell at the lotus feet of the master of the universe, and with an agitated mind explained her sorrow.
"Oh, Prabhu Jagannatha, life of the universe, though You are merciful to all, You are the cause of my distress. Oh, deliverer of the fallen, You have given to me all the living entities who turn from Krishna, and I must bind them up in the material world.
I have come into the material world to do this work, and have thus been cheated of your unlimited prema. People say that wherever Krishna is there is no maya. I am therefore forced to remain always outside your spiritual realm, in the material world. So how will I ever see Your pastimes? If You do not offer a way, I am without hope."
Saying this, Parvati put Gauranga's foot dust on her simanta (place of the hair part) in great distress. From that, the name of Simantadvipa came. Ignorant people call the place Simuliya.
Gauranga, pleased, said to Parvati, "Listen carefully to My words. Supreme Goddess, you are My energy, but you are not separate or different from Me. My one associated energy has two forms. Within the spiritual kingdom, the original energy has one form as Sri Radha, but for carrying out activities in the material world, she has expanded herself as yourself. Without you, My lila could not be accomplished, for in the form of yogamaya you are necessary in My pastimes. In Vraja, you are eternally present as Paurnamasi, and in Navadvipa you are present as Praudhamaya along with Shiva Ksetrapala, guardian of the Dhama."
With that, Gauranga became invisible. Parvati was overcome with love. Filled with that great prema, Parvati stays in one form as the mistress of Simantadvipa, and in another form as Praudhamaya in Mayapur.
After saying this, Nityananda Prabhu took Jiva Gosvami and quickly entered Kazi Nagar.
"Oh, Jiva, hear my words. Kazi Nagar is none other than Mathura. After doing kirtana, Gauranga here gave love of Godhead to the Kazi and liberated him. Kamsa of Krishna lila became the Chand Kazi in Gaura lila. In the same way that Kamsa was related to Krishna, Gauranga therefore addressed the Kazi as His maternal uncle.
"During a kirtana performance, the Kazi, under orders from Hussain Shah, the king of the Bangal empire and Jarasandha in Krishna lila, caused disturbance by breaking the mrdanga. The Lord, appearing in the form of Nrsimha, put fear in the Kazi's heart. Like Kamsa, the Kazi crouched down with fear. However, Sri Chaitanya gave him prema as his liberation and made the Kazi a great devotee. The very fortunate hear this story of the Kazi's liberation.
"Just see the difference between Vraja tattva and Navadvipa tattva. The offenders of Krishna get the liberation of merging into the Lord's effulgence, whereas in Navadvipa, the offenders receive the treasure of love of Godhead. Therefore, Gaura lila may be considered the highest of all. The Gaura Dhama, the Gaura Nama, His form and qualities, do not consider offense, for these offenses are easily overcome. If the devotee has some offense in his heart, the Krishna Nama and Krishna Dhama will have effect only after a long time. However, with Gaura Nama and Gaura Dhama, one quickly gets prema. Offenses are no obstacle because here the devotee can conquer over them easily. Jiva Goswami, if one sees the samadhi of the Kazi, old age and disease are ended."
Nityananda then moved on quickly to Sankhavanik Nagar and there spoke to Jiva.
"Sara Danga is a wonderful sight. Even the name is extremely pretty. Here Jagannatha resides with the Sabaras. When the Lord killed the demon Bahurakta, out of His mercy the Lord came here. Here Jagannatha is eternally situated. Know that for certain."
Going past Tanturaya Gram, they saw the cottage of Kolaveca Sridhara.
"Here Gaura Hari did kirtana and took rest, giving mercy to the devotees. For that reason it is called Visrama Sthana (place of resting). Let us take rest at Sridhara's house."
When Sridhara heard the Lord coming, he came out and paid full obeisances, and then offered puja.
"Oh, Lord, You are very merciful to this servant. I beg you to take rest here."
Nityananda said, "You are very fortunate, for the Lord showed His mercy on you. Today we shall take rest here."
Hearing this, Sridhara's desire was fulfilled. With great attention, he brought together the ingredients and had some devotee brahmanas cook. When Nityananda and Srivas had finished taking meals, Jiva Goswami took the remnants with great bliss. Sridhara then made Nityananda Prabhu lie down on a bed and with Vamsivadana he raised up the Lord's lotus feet.
In the afternoon, Sridhara took Jiva to see Sasthi Tirtha. Srivas said, "Listen, Jiva. Previously when the devas heard that Mahaprabhu would take his descent at Navadvipa, Visvakarma came to Nadiya town. He saw that it would be hard to get water on the roads where the Lord would do kirtana in the future. In one night he dug out six (sasthi) wide ponds, the last at Kazi Gram. Near to Sridhara's beautiful banana patch see one such pond. There Mahaprabhu would sometimes play in the water and take Sridhara's bananas. Even now Sridhara takes his banana flowers and banana stem vegetables to Sachi with great happiness.
"Beside this place is Mayamari. Listen to the story from the Puranas. When Baladeva went on a pilgrimage, He came to Navadvipa to take rest. The brahmanas there told him about the Maya demon. Hearing about the disturbance that the demon was causing, Baladeva very quickly came running to meet the demon in the field. A great battle ensued between Balarama and the demon, and at last the demon was killed. Since then the place has been called Mayamari (killing of the Maya demon). This is a very old story I am telling you. In Vrindavana this tirtha is called Talavana, and it is visible to those who are fortunate."
That night, they all stayed there, and the next day, with cries of "Hari! Hari!" continued their pilgrimage.
The servant, whose only desire is to attain the shade of the lotus feet of Jahnava and Nityananda, reveals this glorification of Nadiya.
Note: Continuation of translation of Sri Navadvip Mahatmya, the Glories of Navadvip Dham, Sixth Chapter (Starting page 50 in the Bengali book).
Thereafter they passed the Tamtvbaya Village, and there they saw the cottage of Kolavecha Sridhar, and Nityananda said, "This sacred place is where Lord Gauranga, after having performed kirtan, took rest along with all of His associates and gave the devotees His causeless mercy. Therefore, this place is known as Sri Bisramastama because here the Lord took rest at the house of Sridhar. Some of us also took rest here. As soon as Kolavecha heard that Lord Nityananda had come to his home, he offered his prostrate obeisances to the lotus feet of the Lord and worshipped Him suitably.
Kolavecha Sridhar said, "My Lord, this is a great mercy upon this humble servant that You have blessed my home by coming. Please take rest here. This is my humble appeal."
Lord Nityananda said, "You are most fortunate because the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Gauranga, has given His causeless mercy unto you! Today we will take rest here at this place."
When Kolavecha Sridhar heard the words of Lord Nityananda, his desires were fulfilled. With great devotion and care, Kolavecha Sridhar arranged all the ingredients for preparing prasadam for Lord Nityananda. He had a pure Vaisnava brahmana perform the cooking. Then he offered the prasadam to Sri Nityananda Prabhu, Who accepted the prasadam along with Srivas Thakur. After they finished taking prasadam, their remnants were accepted by Sri Jiva in great ecstasy. Kolavecha Sridhar had Lord Nityananda Prabhu take rest on a cot and then Sridhar, along with his family members, massaged the lotus feet of the Lord with great devotion.
In the afternoon, Srivas Thakur took Sri Jiva to see Shashtitirtha. They became filled with transcendental bliss to see this holy place. Srivas Thakur said, "My dear Jiva, previously in the (Vedas) (note it for certain) that here in Navadvip Dham, Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya will descend from the spiritual world. At that time, Visvakarma, the architect of the demigods, came here to this ancient town of Nadiya. Visvakarma respected all the paths where the Lord would be performing His sankirtan congregational chanting, and he saw that those paths along which the Lord (would dance) were very dry and it would be hard to provide water for them. Therefore, in one night he excavated six large ponds. In the left pond as ... at Kzigram, the village where the Chand Kazi resided.
Then he showed the expansive and beautiful banana orchards of Kolavecha Sridhar and said, "Close to this, see there is one large lake. In this lake, one time Lord Sri Chaitanya performed water sports and took some of Sridhar's bananas. Even to this day, Kolavecha Sridhar, with great devotion and transcendental happiness, brings banana bunches and banana cores as an offering to Mother Saci.
Then nearby another sacred pilgrimage place was shown to Sri Jiva. "Here, Sri Jiva, see the Myamari.... Even to this day this place is renowned. According to the histories in the Puranas, listen to the glories of this holy place. When Lord Baladeva, the Personality of Godhead, was visiting all of the places of pilgrimge throughout India, at that time He also visited Navadvip Dham and took rest here in the sacred abode. At that time all of the brahmanas came and worshipped Lord baladeva and they informed Him that there was a demon by the name of Mayasur. This Mayasur demon was torturing and disturbing the lives of the brahminical community. When Lord Haladhar heard of the disturbances that this demon was creating, He chased the demon with tremendous force and captured him in the middle of this field. There a great battle ensued between the demon and Lord Balarama. Finally Lord Balarama killed the demon. Thus dying at the hand of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he achieved salvation. That is how this place has become renowned as Myamari, or the place where the Maya demon was killed. This story which I have just revealed to you is very old. Now the confidential significance of this sacred place of pilgrimage is that it is non-different from the Talavan Forest (one of the 12 forests in Braja Dham, the abode of Lord Krishna) of the Brajamandala, the sacred abode of Braja. This is visible to the eyes of those pure devotees who are highly fortunate.
At that ... evening at that place, all of the devotees remained and took rest. The next day they continued their journey by chanting loudly the Holy Names of the Lord, "Hari! Hari!"
Thus this Bhaktivinoda, who is always aspiring for the eternal shelter under the cooling shade of the lotus feet of Their Lordships Sri-Sri-Jahnava-Nitai, broadcasts these transcendental truths about the eternal abode, Sri Navadvip Dham.
Thus ends the translation by the humble servant of His Divine Grace Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada to Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur's compilation of the Sixth Chapter of The Transcendental Glories of the Spiritual Abode, Sri Navadvip Dham, entitled "Circumambulating Srimantadvip."
All glories to Sri Chaitanya Candra! All glories to Nityananda!
All glories to Advaita and Gadadhara!
All glories to Srivas and the devotees, devoted to Gauranga's feet!
All glories to the Dhama!
Leaving Visrama Sthana, the party proceeded to Suvarna Bihar. There Nityananda spoke.
"Oh, Jiva, this is a wonderful place. Like the rest of Navadvipa, it is transcendental to the material plane of existence. During Satya-yuga, there lived a well-known king at this place. His name was Sri Suvarna Sen. He was very involved in ruling the kingdom for a long time. Even though he grew old, he could take no rest from working. With a heart covered by material hankering, the king would always be thinking how to increase his wealth. By some quirk of good fortune, Narada happened to come there. The king did extensive puja to him, and Narada bestowed mercy on him in the form of personal instructions on the highest spiritual truths. Narada spoke as follows.
"'Oh, king, your days are going by uselessly, just with thinking about material wealth and gain. Know that this acquisition is of no value. The supreme wealth is spiritual knowledge. Just once consider that in your heart. Wife, sons, friends, none of them are yours. At death no one has anything. When you die, your body under the water, everything in what was your house will be gone. If no one has possession of anything, then why do you hold onto this false hope and aspiration, this thirst for materialism--a water which has no capacity to quench the thirst? If you can claim that one can get happiness in life without receiving any pain, then I also will pursue the material path.
"'Oh, king, this is all false. Life is impermanent, not beyond a hundred years. Therefore, know the truth. Youmust get beyond this world of illusion, to the place where there is happiness without pain. By what process, then, can one attain that result, where there is no fear, pain or grief? If one only renounces, or if one takes to the path of jnana, one cannot get this result. By vairagya and jnana, one can get freedom from material bondage and merge into the brahman. But in this oneness, there is no bliss. Rather, I say, it is complete annihilation, and extremely offensive. By this process, the material world ceases, but nothing good is gained. Just consider that aspect of kaivalya realization.
"'The really wise man does not go for material enjoyment or simply ceasing that material activity (bhukti or mukti) but instead practices bhakti unto Sri Krishna. This is performed without any attraction for material fulfillment, but on the other hand, complete attraction to serving the lotus feet of Krishna.
"'This process of bhakti may be divided into three parts: sambandha, abhidheya, and prayojana. The living entity is the servant of Krishna; bhakti is the only path to success; the tree of bhakti bears fruit in the form of love of God, prema. That fruit is the necessity, the only goal, the eternal treasure of all living entities. Bhukti and mukti are insignificant.
"'Krishna is the sun, full of knowledge and bliss. Maya is His image in shadow form. The livingt entity is the infinitesimal particle of Krishna's effulgence. Being invested with a borderline character (tatastha), if the jiva contacts maya, that maya takes him and binds him up. When one goes away from Krishna, he can only go towards maya. Then, by that contact, the living entity takes on reactions for all his activities (karma). In the trap of maya, wandering, living, dying, ignorant of the bondage that his activities continually create, finally one is led to deliberate on how to extinguish this great trouble.
"'Sometimes one takes to regulative activities of the Vedas for material gain, sometimes one takes to the eight-fold path of yoga, and sometimes one takes to discussion on knowledge of brahman, and sometimes one takes to logic and argument. But never is there success, for never does one consider the treasure held within his own soul, the actual nature of his soul.
"'While proceeding from body to body, if he happens to meet with a pure devotee he will receive pure sraddha, pure faith. By association with the devotees, he will eventually take to worship of Krishna, and then give up all the material hankerings in his heart (anarthas). Then he will attain a level of firmness. This will turn to attraction, if he continues his worship. That attraction for Krishna will then become attachment. This turns to bhava, and bhava becomes prema. This is the progression of pure bhakti.
"'Hearing, chanting, remembering, serving, worshipping, bowing down, servitude, friendship and self-surrender--these are the nine-fold processes. One who performs these in association with devotees attains Krishna prema.
"'You are a very fortunate king, for you are situated in Navadvipa, and your position as a resident of the Dhama is the beginning of your good fortune. Receiving faith by the association of the devotees, singing the name of Krishna, one literally makes the sun of prema rise up. Oh, fortunate will be the coming of Kali-yuga, for then Krishna along with His associates will appear to perform Gaura lila! He who takes Gaura's name will then get the mercy of Krishna, and finally he will get to live in Vrndavana. He who goes on worshipping Krishna without taking the name of Gaura will get Krishna only after a very long time. But he who takes Gaura's name quickly gets Krishna, for in Gaura's name the offenses do not persist.'
"While saying this, Narada lost control of himself, and shouting the name of Gaura, he began to dance. 'Gaura Hari Bol!' the vina joined in. 'Oh, Gaura Hari! When will blessed Kali- yuga come?'
"Saying this, Narada went off, while prema appeared in the king. Crying the name of Gauranga, dancing, and begging love of God from the devotees, he became free from material hankerings. Later, while sleeping, the king saw Gauranga and Gadadhara with their associates dancing in the courtyard. Surrounding the golden (suvarna) form of Gaura, the multitudes were shouting 'Hare Krishna!' while dancing and embracing one another.
"Awaking, the king was in anguish, and out of desire for Gauranga, he began weeping.
"Then a voice spoke, 'Oh, king, when I appear, you will be among My associates. Your name will be Buddhimanta Khan. You will receive the transcendental Dhama and serve the lotus feet of Gauranga.'
"Hearing this, the king became composed and began to worship Gauranga."
When Nityananda had finished His story, Srivas, who is empowered directly by Narada, fell unconscious, and overcome by great ecstasy, drunken with the nectar of Gaura's name, Sri Jiva also fell flat on the earth.
"Oh, Gauranga, golden figurine, golden jewel, will I ever be able to see You here?"
At that moment, the complete Gauranga kirtana became visible to his eyes. Not only did he attain that nectar, but the form of Gauranga then began to dance, while Nityananda--along with Advaita and the crowd--started to sing the glories of the Lord. Mrdanga and kartal sounded; sweetly the song grew, as the previous lila was recreated. Two praharas it lasted. Its bliss is impossible to describe.
Then, singing loudly the glories to Gauranga, the party of pilgrims went on to the outskirts of Devapalli. In that village they took rest as the guests of the presiding deity, Nrsimha, and then took midday meals. At the last moments of daylight, while strolling in the village, Nityananda spoke.
"This is Devapalli, the temple of Nrsimhadeva, well known in Satya-yuga. Being merciful to Prahlada, killing Hiranyakasipu, the Lord came to this place to rest. Brahma and the other demigods made their houses here and formed a town. On the bank of the Mandakini River, on the top of a hillock, this village called Sri Nrisimha Ksetra, within Navadvipa, was established. All were absorbed in the worship of Nrsimhadeva.
"See there the residence of Surya, of Brahma, and--to the east--of Nrsimha. The place was transformed. See there Ganesa's palace, and over there Indra's. Though Visvakarma built hundreds of jewel houses here, in time all were destroyed, the Mandakini dried up, and now only the mounds mark the places. Witness these countless broken stones, the remnants of the temples. Again, in the future, one devotee king will receive a drop of mercy from Nrisimha and will make a large temple, install Nrisimha and take up service to Nrisimha again."
This is on the boundary of the Navadvipa parikrama, but stil lies within the sixteen krosas.
The beggar Bhaktivinode Thakur, whose wealth is the lotus feet of Nitai and Jahnava, giving up the net of maya, sings the glories of Navadvipa, which have no limit.
All glories to the son of Sachi!
All glories to the Avadhuta!
Glories to Sita Pati, king of the devotees!
Glories to Gadadhara and the association of devotees!
Glories to beautiful Navadvipa Dhama!
Glories to the name of Gaura!
Nityananda Prabhu, along with the devotees, shouting "Hari! Hari!" moved forward on waves of love. Smothered by prema, He spoke indistinctly. Tears were streaming down His face, and in agitation He cried out, "Gaura! Gaura!" All his ornaments glittered, and His divine form illuminated the ten directions. Srivasa danced with Jiva, sometimes weeping, sometimes dancing, and all the other devotees moved forward, dancing in time.
As they approached Alakananda, Nityananda Prabhu, immersed in bliss, spoke as follows: "Starting to west of Vilva Paksha (Bela Pukuriya) village, the Mandakini River comes and surrounds Nadiya. At Suvarna Bihar, the Alakananda River leaves the Mandakini. On the eastern bank of the Alakananda River, at Hari Hara Kshetra, a beautiful murti will be discovered in the future amidst a lovely forest.
"To the west of the Alakananda River see Kashi, the abode of Shiva, where followers worship Shiva and his consort. This Navadvipa is superior to the other Kashi because here Shiva is always dancing and uttering the name of Gaura, begging his followers to accept Gaura bhakti. That liberation which the sannyasis who live for a thousand years in Kashi obtain by the process of jnana is obtained in Navadvipa by the devotees who simply say the name of Gauranga, lift their feet and dance. At the time of leaving the body, these living entities are delivered by Shiva, who shouts the name of Gauranga in their ears. This Dhama is thus called Mahavaranasi, for here there is no fear of death."
At that moment Nityananda Prabhu began dancing and asked Jiva to accept Gaura prema. Invisible to everyone, Shiva came forward and bowed at Nityananda's lotus feet. By this, Shiva and his consort achieved all their desires and went off singing repeatedly the name of Gauranga.
Nityananda walked with the devotees to Gadigacha village. When he arrived there, he spoke with a smile.
"This is called Godrumadvipa. Here Surabhi stays eternally. When Indra, being too proud, overcome by maya, flooded Gokula with rain, the Lord lifted Govardhana mountain and carefully protected Gokula. His pride crushed, Indra recognized the real identity of Krishna, and to clear himself of his offense, fell down at Krishna's lotus feet. The son of Nanda, an ocean of mercy, forgave Indra and pacified him.
"However, Indra continued to be fearful. Approaching Surabhi, he said, 'I cannot understand Krishna's lila, and for that reason I committed a great offense. Now I have heard that in Kali-yuga Vrajendra Suta will perform wonderful Nadiya lila. But for fear that then again I will fall into illusion and commit offense, I hesitate. As you are Surabhi, a desire cow, you know everything. Kindly give some elucidation of this matter for me.'
"Surabhi answered, 'Let us go to Navadvipa Dhama and worship Nimai!'
"They came to Navadvipa and performed worship of Gauranga. Since Gauranga bhajan is very easy and its results are easily attained, by repeating Gauranga's name and weeping, quickly they attained the visitation of Gauranga.
"How extraordinary was the charming form! The figure of Gauranga was laughing and bubbling with love in the well of nectar. The Lord said, 'I know your wish. Very soon I will appear in Nadiya town. At that time you will serve Me and the net of maya will no longer catch you.'
"The Lord vanished, but Surabhi remained here beside a banyan tree, constantly serving the lotus feet of Gauranga. Therefore, the place is called Go (cow) druma (tree) dvipa. At this place the devotees' desires are fulfilled. Building a cottage and worshipping here, one will very easily become absorbed in Sri Chaitanya's lotus feet.
"At this island, the son of Mrkunda (Markandeya) lived during the flood of devastation. The muni was destined to live for seven kalpas. Seeing the great danger during the devastation, when all became inundated, he began looking for a place to stay. Tossed in the water, he went here and there.
"'Oh, why did I get such a benediction?' he lamented.
"The Dhama of Navadvipa remained, however, giving shelter to the devotees. Submerged in a wave, the muni became unconscious and sank, but merciful Surabhi happened to see him and lifted him out carefully. Coming to consciousness, the son of Mrkunda saw the island of Godruma, an astounding place extending for a billion krosas. Brilliant streams and rivers were everywhere, trees and vines shone, and birds sang the glories of Gauranga.
"'Look at the banyan tree extending for a yojana. See the Surabhi there!'
"The muni went to Surabhi and said, 'Oh, goddess, please save my life! Pardon me, but give me some milk!'
"Surabhi was merciful and fed the muni her milk. After becoming strong, the muni said to the cow, 'Oh, goddess, my mother, by your energy you pervade the universe. Unknowingly I got the boon to live for seven kalpas without dying. At the time of devastation I suffered greatly. All I do is constantly undergo miseries. There is no happiness at all. What am I to do, mother? Please tell me how I can get out of this grief.'
"Surabhi gave instruction: 'Worship the two lotus feet of Gauranga. This Navadvipa is non-material, beyond all destruction. By the naked eye it is sixteen krosas, but it is the supreme Vaikuntha, without fault or illusion. Here is spiritual place and time. No one here is affected by material illusion. Spreading out all laround is the pure Viraja River. A billion krosas each part, and in the center is Mayapur, a vast city. The eight islands are the eight petals, and the central area of pollen is Antardvipa. All the tirthas, all the devas and rsis, come and live here, worshipping Gauranga. For your own good, dear Markandeya, take shelter of Gauranga's feet. Take shelter of the non-duplicitous dharma, rejecting outright desire for bhukti and mukti.
"'By taking shelter of Gauranga worship, you will get sweet love of God as the result. When that prema sits in your heart, it will drown you in the nectar of the artful lpastimes of the Lord. You will get the shelter of Radha's lotus feet in Vraja, and your mind will be fixed on serving the divine pair. The happiness of this service is unmatched, please understand, while in the noncharacterized nothingness, there is useless knowledge.'
"The muni, hearing the words of Surabhi, folded his hands and said, 'If I take to worshipping Gauranga, what will be my destiny?'
"Surabhi answered with the essence of conclusions.
"'In Gaura bhajana there is no consideration, no deliberation. When you call out the name of Gaura, allkarmas are destroyed. There shall be no more distress, and all your material samsara will go. Not only karma but the fruits of all mental speculation, which are only trouble, will all be cut out at the root. Therefore, in this island you should submerge yourself in Gauranga rasa and worship the Lord.'
"Markandeya, hearing this, filled with bliss, shouted the name of Gaura, laughing and crying at once.
"Look at this remarkable place, where Markandeya received his life."
Jiva Goswami, hearing the glories of Gauranga from the mouth of Nityananda, felt supreme happiness. Spending the day at this place, they then went to Madhyadvipa.
Knowing that the lotus feet of Nitai and Jahnava are the essence of life, the worthless Bhaktivinoda, holding the order of Nityananda on his head, describes the glories of Nadiya.
Glory to Gauracandra and Nityananda!
Glory to Gadadhara!
Glory to Srivasadi!
Glory to the abode of devotees, Sri Navadvipa, king of the abodes!
When night had ended, Sri Nityananda, drunken with songs of Gaura, went off with the devotees. They were absorbed in love of God, distributing the supreme bliss along the way. Coming to Madhyadvipa, laughing and laughing, Nityananda spoke.
"This is Majidagram. Here the seven rishis, engaged in worshipping Gauranga, stayed a long time. In Satya-yuga, the rishis, in their father"s abode, began singing the glories to Gaura. Completely absorbed in that, they begged for the eternal treasure of Gaura prema. Very pleased by this, Brahma told his seven sons, "Go to Navadvipa, sing the glories of Gaura, and easily you shall receive prema. Whoever gets the mercy of the Dhama gets association of devotees. Then, worshipping in the association of devotees, you will sink in the ocean of prema. That is the supreme activity. Whoever gets attraction for Navadvipa, he will receive the benediction of living in Vraja. To live in the spiritual dhama and recite the name of Gaura is the only aspiration of the devotees."
"Taking to heart the instructions of their father, the seven rishis came here, shouting the name of Hari, dancing, begging for Gaura prema and singing the Lord"s glories in a loud voice.
"Oh, Gaura Hari, be merciful, just once. Being offenders, we have followed many paths, but now we are taking to the path of devotional service."
"Firmly situated in bhakti and worshipping Gauranga, the rishis underwent austerities. Not eating, not sleeping, they simply recited the name of Gaura.
"Around noontime (madhya ahna), Gauranga showed Himself to the rishis. He shone like the noonday sun, attracting the minds of the yogis. He appeared in panca tattva form. How extraordinary was that form, golden in complexion, with a garland of flowers around His neck, His glittering ornaments illuminating all directions. Beautiful was His glance, long flowed the curls of His hair. On His forehead was sandalwood pulp. He wore three folded cloths and a shining thread. Enchanted, the rishis offered worship.
"We surrender to Your feet. Please give us devotion."
"Gaura Hari said, "Listen, rishis. Give up all desires, the chains of jnana and karma, and just discuss Krishna. Within a short time, I shall unfold My lila in Navadvipa. Then you will see My pastimes of nama sankirtana. But now keep this subject a secret. Worship Krishna at Kumara Hatta at the ghat made by you."
"When Sri Chaitanya disappeared, the seven rishis went to Kumara Hatta. At that place now you see seven hillocks or tilas. These seven hills are arranged in the same pattern as the seven rishis in the sky (constellation).
"Living here, one will receive Gaura Hari without having to undergo a strict process of regulations and rules.
"To the south of this, see one stream, the Gomati River, very pure. Beside it is the Naimisa forest. At tthe beginning of Kali-yuga, the rishis headed by Saunaka held a sacrifice. From the mouth of Suka they heard about Gauranga. Whoever reads the Puranas in Karttika month here becomes free from all distress, becomes absorbed in the pastimes of Gauranga, and attains Vrindavana easily. Siva, giving up his vehicle of the bull, mounted Brahma's swan and came here to hear the recitation of the Puranas. Together with his followers, he sang the glories of Gaura. Singing and dancing, the followers surrounded Shiva and-- shouting the name of Gaura Hari--threw heaps of flowers all around."
On hearing the words of Nityananda, Jiva became spiritually excited, lost control of his mind, and began muttering incoherently, tasting the influence of the Dhama.
The devotees spent the day there in the association of Nityananda, and the next day they went to Puskara.
Srila Bhaktivinoda, within whom the ever-worshipable Jahnava and Nitai have appeared, sings the glories of Nadiya and the sweetness of the devotees, while tasting the transcendental flavors.
Glories to Gaura and Nityananda and Advaita!
Glories to Gadadhara and Srivas Pandit!
Glories to Navadvip, the Dhama of pure bhakti!
Glories to the Name of Gaura and Nityananda!
Oh, souls of Kali-yuga, please listen. Giving up karma and jnana, giving up all dharmas and adharmas, just worship Nitai and Chaitanya, for They are the ocean of mercy, and without trouble They give out the bliss of Vraja Dhama.
When the darkness had lifted, Nityananda Raya took Jiva Goswami and continued on the pilgrimage. He explained as follows.
"See this village. Everyone now calls this place Brahmana Pur, but in the scriptures it is called Brahmana Pushkara. In Satya-yuga a brahmana named Diva Das gave up family life and went on pilgrimage. Pushkara tirtha was very dear to him, but in the course of his wandering he came to Navadvipa. There he had a dream which instructed him to stay there, for he would receive a great treasure. The brahmana built his cottage and lived there until he became old. Though his desire was to see Pushkara, he found it impossible to move about. In this situation, he began to weep.
"'Now I will never see Pushkara!'
"The personality of Pushkara, being merciful, came before the brahmana in the shape of a vipra and said, 'Do not cry. Before you is a splendid pond. Take bath there once, and you will see Pushkara before your eyes.'
"The brahmana took his bath in the pond. By that he received transcendental eyes to see Pushkara before him. Crying, the brahmana said, 'I have been a great nuisance to you.'
"Pushkara replied, 'Listen, fortunate brahmana. I am not coming from far off but am present here, for in Navadvipa all the tirthas reside. By serving in Navadvipa, you serve them all. I have one form in the West, but I reside here permanently. The results attained by bathing one hundred times there are actually dispensed from here. Therefore, whoever gives up Navadvipa with the desire to go to other holy places is a fool and rascal. One may attain results from travelling to all the tirthas, but all these tirthas reside in Navadvipa. See the raised area. That is Kuruksetra Brahmavarta. Sarasvati and Drsadvati are on its two sides. It is splendid and gives much punya.
"'I am speaking a very secret thing to you, oh brahmana. Very shortly, there will be great bliss here. At Mayapur in ¨Saci's house, Gauranga will be born and distribute prema. In all these places the Lord with His devotees will dance madly in the nectar of sankirtana. The whole universe will drown in the flood of prema. Except for the stubborn atheists, all will receive prema. Whoever stays at the Dhama and fixes himself there will attain the feet of Gaura. The evil-minded may worship Krishna for hundreds of thousands of years but will not get attraction to the Holy Name. But if one worships Gauranga, all one's wicked sentiments will be uprooted, and very soon one will attain Radha- Krishna in Vrindaban. Taking shelter of the sakhis, one will receive one's spiritual body and serve the divine couple in one secluded grove. Oh brahmana, stay here and worship, for you will see Gauranga and His associates.'
"Saying this, Pushkara Raja departed. A voice from the sky said, 'Kali-yuga is coming. At that time you will again take birth and swim in the ocean of Gaura kirtana.'
"The brahmana made up his mind to stay at the pond to worship the Lord."
While Jiva was listening to this story, they entered Uccahatta, Kuruksetra. Sri Nityananda spoke again.
"Here all the devas came, along with the tirtha of Kuruksetra. Whatever tirthas were in the region of Brahmavarta between the Sarasvati and Drsadvati Rivers (Kuruksetra) are present here. Prthudak and others reside here and do service to Navadvipa. The fruit attained by living in Kuruksetra for a hundred years is obtained by residing in Navadvipa for one night. Here the devas came and set up a busy village for discussing the lila of Gauranga. Therefore it is called Hatta (market) Danga. By seeing this, one will receive the ocean of prema.
"This is one boundary of Navadvipa. Now let us cross the Ganga."
They crossed at noontime. Nityananda Prabhu, like the sun, rose on the horizon of Koladvipa. While on the way to Kuliyapahara Pur, Nityananda Prabhu spoke.
"The order in which we have proceeded til now is the authorized order of parikrama with the best effect. When Sri Chaitanya with His own men came to purify the Kaji in the evening with his kirtan contingent of fourteen mrdangas, His starting point was Mayapur. Through the period of one night, which became one night of Brahma due to the sweet kirtan, Gauranga wandered through His land. After that, every ekadasi tithi my Lord went out on sankirtan, wandering over the sacred islands.
Sometimes He wandered over the five krosas of Antardvipa, and sometimes He wandered eight krosas, according to His liking.
"From His house He went first to Barakona Ghat, then around Ballal Dirghika and Sridhara's house. From there He would go to the edge of Antardvipa and thus easily complete a five-krosa ¨tour. From Simuliya He would go to the house of the Kaji. After talking to Sridhara He would go to Adigacha (Godruma), then Majida (Madhyadvipa). Crossing the Ganga at that point, on the other bank He would go up to Para Danga and China Danga, and then crossing the Ganga again, He would return home, completing eight krosas.
"Now the complete tour is sixteen krosas, and if that is done, the Lord is pleased. This is the tour I am taking you on. There is no equal to this. Within this tour you will see all the twelve forests of Vrndaban which extend over sixteen krosas. This tour ends after nine nights and thus is called Navaratra parikrama in scripture. One does the five-krosa tour in one day and completes the eight-krosa tour after three nights, spending the first night in Mayapur, the second night in Godruma, and the third night on the opposite shore line of the Ganga."
Hearing this instruction on the method of parikrama, Jiva Goswami could not contain his love.
The worthless one, whose hope is to attain the lotus feet of Nitai and Jahnava, describes the glories to Nadiya.
All glories to Sri Chaitanya, glory to Sri Nityananda!
Glory to Advaita and Srivas and all the devotees of Gaura!
Glory to Gaura Bhumi, topmost of all, where Lord Chaitanya descended with the Holy Name!
Nityananda spoke.
"Listen, eveyone! The five streams of the Ganga join at this place. The Ganga mixes with the Mandakini and Alakananda, and Sarasvati appears hidden. From the west, along with Yamuna comes the Bhogavati. There also the Manasa Ganga flows quickly. Since this is a Maha Prayag, the rishis with Brahma undertook hundreds of thousands of such sacrifices here. The glory of the place is incomparable. If one lives here, one will not take another birth. How to describe the glories? All other tirthas become like dried-up rivers in comparison. From here the living entities give up earth, air and water and attain to Goloka Vrindaban. This place, known as Kuliapahara, is situated on the bank of the Ganga and raised up like a mountain. In the scriptures this is called Koladvipa. Hear now one story from Satya-yuga.
"A young brahmana named Vasudeva was busily engaged in worship of the Varaha incarnation. He did worship to Varaha murti and offered prayers.
"'Please give me mercy and show Yourself. Let my eyes and life be successful!' He choked upcrying. 'If my Lord does not show Himself, my life is worthless.'
"Shortly thereafter, the merciful Lord showed Himself to Vasudeva in the form of a boar. His body was decorated with ornaments, and His feet, neck, nostrils, face, and eyes were all attractive. He was towering high as a mountain. Seeing Him, the brahmana thought himself very fortunate. He fell on the earth and paid his respects. Crying and confused, he could not utter words. Seeing the devotion of the youth, Varaha spoke gently to him.
"'Oh, Vasudeva, as you are My devotee, I am satisfied by your worship. When Kali-yuga comes, I will display My pastimes here. Hear My words. In the three worlds there is no comparison to Navadvipa. It is My very dear Dhama, though hidden now. Also the tirtha places like Brahmavarta reside here. That is the verdict of scripture. When Brahma performed a sacrifice, I appeared and killed Hiranyaksa with My tusks. The powerful effect of the place in which I appeared is present right here. By serving Navadvipa, all tirthas are served. By living in Navadvipa, all effects of living elsewhere are attained. You were fortunate to serve Me in Navadvipa, for when Gauranga comes, you will be born here again. You will see the mahasankirtan and the astounding form of Gauranga.'
"Varaha disappeared. The vipra searched out to understand the meaning of that message. As he was a great pandit, he came to a definite understanding by scrutinizing all scriptural evidence.
"During the reign of the Vaivasvata Manu, at the beginning of Kali-yuga, Gaura lila would occur at Nadiya. The sages held all this secret. It is told by hint alone, but the wise men understand the meaning. When the lila appears on earth, the sastric evidences will also become clear. Thus the brahmana received the hint about the secret truths of Gaura. In great bliss the brahmana did sankirtan. Always he sang the name of Gaura. Having once seen the mountainous form of Varaha, Vasudeva --carefully considering--called this place Kola (boar) Parvata (mountain), but it is now known as Parvata. The devotees know that this is Giri Govardhana of Vrndavana.
"See, to the north is Bahulavana, whose wonderful radiance spreads out in all directions. In Vrindavana there are twelve forests one after another in sequence, but that does not occur here. By the Lord's desire there is no such order. Only the Lord knows why. The uncommon form of the forest increases the prema all the more.
Going a little further, Nityananda again spoke.
"See here Samudragari. This is directly Dvaraka Puri and Ganga Sagar. Both of these are present here. For Samudra Sen, a king and great devotee, Krishna was all in all. When Bhima came here with his soldiers to conquer all opponents, he surrounded Samudragiri. The king knew that Krishna was the only resort of the Pandavas and that when they were in danger, He would come to their rescue. He thought that if he could get Bhima to show some fear and scream out, then Krishna would appear, being merciful to His devotees.
"'He will come to my country, and I will see with my own eyes the black figure of Krishna.' Thinking like this, he gathered together his soldiers, elephants, horses and foot soldiers and went to battle. All the time remembering Krishna, he began firing his arrows. Bhima, seeing the shower of arrows, in great danger called to Krishna. 'Oh, Lord, protect Your Bhima, since You are merciful. I cannot fightwith Samudra Sen. If I were to defeat him, he would be humiliated. It is very shameful, but I must now be defeated.'
"Hearing the plaintive call of Bhima, Krishna appeared on the battlefield. No one could see that form except the king. He was of youthful form with complexion the color of a new cloud. Around His neck hung a garland and on His head a crown sparkled. On all His limbs were ornaments, and yellow garments clothed His wonderful figure. Seeing that form, the king fainted in ecstasy. Controlling himself, he revealed his request to the Lord.
"'Krishna, You are the master of the universe, the deliverer of the fallen. Seeing me so fallen, You have come. Everyone is singing about Your pastimes. Hearing that, I had the desire to see Your lila. My vow was that You should appear in Navadvipa. Now I see Your enchanting form here. Never will I leave Navadvipa. You have upheld My vow and have made Your appearance in the form of Krishna in Navadvipa. But my desire goes even further. Please become Gauranga before my very eyes!'
"As he looked on, the king beheld the sweet lila of Radha and Krishna. In the forest of Kumuda, Krishna and His friends performed their afternoon activities of going to herd the cows. Then in an instant this lila disappeared and he saw the form of Gauranga in a huge kirtana, with the devotees. Gauranga was dancing and singing. Brilliant gold was His complexion, all attractive His eyes drunken, body quivering. The desire of the king's eyes was fulfilled. When he saw this, the king considered his great fortune and offered prayers at the Lord's lotus feet. In a few moments, however, this all vanished. Deprived, the king began to weep.
"Bhima had not been able to see this incident and thought that the king had become suddenly afraid. He was surprised when the king gave up fighting and simply begged to pay a tax to Bhima. Bhima took the levy and went off to other places. The whole world sings the praises of Bhima, conqueror of all directions.
"That incident took place at Samudragari, on the edge of Navadvipa. Even Brahma cannot know the glory of this place. The ocean, one time taking shelter of the Ganga, came up this far and in devotion served the Lord's feet. Ganga devi said, 'Oh ocean, very soon my Lord will stay in a forest on your shore.'
"The ocean answered, 'Listen, goddess! The son of Sachi will never leave Navadvipa, though unseen to the common eye. The eternal Dhama of the Lord is this Navadvipa. All the Vedas sing of His visible and invisible pastimes here. In your shelter I will stay here, Ganga, and serve Gauranga of Navadvipa.'
"Thus the milky ocean stayed at Navadvipa, contemplating always the eternal lila of Gauranga."
The party took rest at Vaninatha's house and in the afternoon toured Champa Hatta. Nityananda Prabhu explained to Sri Jiva: "Listen, son of Vallabha. At this place there was a Champaka forest once. It was a portion of Khadira Forest of Vrndaban. Sakhi Champalata takes Champa flowers, strings garlands and offers them to Radha and Krishna as her eternal pastimes. When Kali-yuga grew in influence, capitalists moved in and took the flowers very eagerly. They set up market and sold them to the villagers and townfolk. Therefore this place is called Champa Hatta, more commonly known as Champahati.
"When Laksmana Sen was the king of Nadiya, Jayadeva was one of his subjects in Navadvipa. He built a hut on Ballal Dirgika's bank and lived with his wife Padma in peace. There he wrote the Dasa Avatara poem, which came into the king's hand. The king read the poem with great relish and inquired who had written it. Govardhana Acharya answered that Jayadeva had written it. The king asked where he lived and the acharya told him. Secretly the king made a search and in the night came to Jayadeva's house. Dressed as a Vaisnava, the king entered the cottage, paid respects to the poet and seated himself. But Jayadeva knew that he was the king dressed as a penniless Vaisnava. The king then introduced himself and begged the poet to come to his palace. Jayadeva, being very detached from materialism, could not agree to go to the house of a materialist.
"He answered the king: 'I will give up your kingdom and go elsewhere. Association with materialists is not auspicious. I will cross the Ganga and head for Puri.'
"The king said, 'Do not give up Navadvipa ever. Listen to my words. Your vow should remain true, but my wish also should be fulfilled. Do your activity but be merciful to me. Across the Ganga is the enchanting Champa Hatta. Stay there for a few years. I will not go there as I please, but will see you only on your wish.'
"Hearing the king's words, the poet agreed and replied quickly, 'Though you are endowed with so much wealth and such a kingdom, you are a devotee of Krishna and are not bound to the material world. To test you, I called you a materialist, but you have tolerated it. Thus I know that you are a devotee of Krishna. Though taking material things, you remain unattached. I will remain some time in Champa Hatta and you can come secretly, giving up your opulent position.'
"The king very happily had his ministers build Jayadeva a cottage in Champa Hatta. There Jayadeva stayed for some time, engaged in worshipping Krishna according to the process of raga marga. Padmavati would bring heaps of Champaka flowers which Jayadeva would offer to Krishna. In great love the poet offered, and Krishna, seeing that, accepted the Champaka.
"Krishna then appeared, golden in hue, the color of the Champa flower, all attractive, shining like a hundred thousand moons, with a beautiful face. He had curled hair and a garland of flowers around His neck. His arms were long. His effulgence lit the room. Seeing that form of Gauranga, Jayadeva fainted and tears streamed from his eyes. Padmavati fell to the earth unconscious.
"The Lord with His two lotus hands lifted the couple up and spoke nectarean words: 'Very soon I will take birth in Nadiya in the womb of Saci. With all lthe devotees of all the avataras, I will distribute the gift of prema and Krishna sankirtan. After twenty-four years I will take sannyas and live in Puri. There in the association of the devotees, overcome by prema, I will taste the poems of your Gita Govinda continuously, for it is very dear to me. You will return to this Navadvipa Dhama after death. This I say for certain. Therefore, both of you go to Puri now, worship Jagannatha and attain love of God.'
"Gauranga disappeared. The two fainted, overcome by separation, and began to weep profusely. While weeping, they made a request.
"'What a form we have seen! How can we live in your absence? Why did you order us to leave Nadiya? We must have committed some offense here. We are becoming disturbed just to think that we must leave Nadiya, the spiritual kingdom. It would have been better to be a bird or beast in Navadvipa, for then we could stay a long time, always meditating on the Dhama. We can give up living, but we cannot give up Navadvipa, for the attachment is too deep. Oh Lord, give us Your lotus feet, and let us stay here.'
"As they were crying, they heard a voice: 'Do not be sorrowful, but go to Puri. There are two things to keep your heart undisturbed. Some time before, you two were thinking of going to Puri for a visit. The Lord had to fulfill that wish. Jagannatha is eager for your darshan. By plesing him, on leaving your body, you will again come to Navadvipa and remain here eternally.'
"Hearing that, the two immediately left. Turning back, they glanced once more at Navadvipa, and with tears flowing and heart throbbing, they spoke in sorrow to the residents.
"'Please give your mercy to us, who have offended. Please purify us!'
"While looking back, they proceeded further and further away. Navadvipa out of sight, they crossed out of Gaura Bhumi, weeping as they went. Arriving at Nilacala some days later, they pleased Lord Jagannatha.
"Jiva Goswami, this is the place of Jayadeva. Only a raised portion of earth remains. This is the story the old people tell."
Seeing the place, Jiva became speechless and began weeping.
"Fortunate Jayadeva, fortunate Padmavati, Gita Govinda and Krishna Rati! Be merciful to me and give me one drop of the ocean of prema that Jayadeva enjoyed!"
Saying this, Jiva fell to the earth at the feet of Nityananda. They spent the night at Vaninatha's house, where Vaninatha and Vamsivadana attended on Nityananda Prabhu.
This vile, worthless one, whose aspiration is the shade of the lotus feet of Nitai and Jahnava, sings this glorification of Nadiya.
All glories to Chaitanya Candra and Prabhu Nityananda!
Glory to Advaita and Gadadhara!
All glories to Srivaas and the devotees, to the house of Jagannath Misra!
All glories to the king of Dhamas, Navadvipa.
When night lifted, the devotees stirred, and lifting their limbs, they called for Nityananda and Gaura. Then, keeping Champa Hatta behind them, they went on in bliss.
From this point, Vaninatha accompanied Nityananda, saying, "When will it happen that I shall go on parikrama with Nityananda and come to Gauranga's house in Mayapur?"
They came to Ratupur and saw the beauty of that town. When they came to Ritu (spring) dvipa, Sri Nityananda said, "This place is extremely attractive. The trees are bending down their heads in respect, the breeze is blowing gently, and the flowers are blooming on the walls. The humming of the bees and the fragrance of the flowers intoxicate the minds of the traveller here."
As He was saying this, Nityananda became like a madman.
"Quick, bring my horn. My friends have gone far off and Krishna is fast asleep and won't come. He is acting like a baby. Where are Subala and Dama? All alone I cannot go and herd the cows!"
Shouting for Krishna, Nityananda jumped a few yards. Seeing His state, the devotees immediately supplicated at Nityananda's feet.
"Oh, Prabhu Nityananda, Your brother, Gauracandra, is no longer here. He has taken sannyasa and gone to Nilacala, leaving us poor beggars."
Upon hearing these words, Nityananda became dejected. Crying, He fell to the ground.
"You have left us in such sorrow, Kani, My brother, for You have taken sannyasa and given up all of us. I cannot continue My life. I will jump in the Yamuna River!"
Sri Nityananda lost consciousness. Sensing the elevated spiritual emotional state of Nityananda Prabhu, they began to chant the Holy Name, but four dandas passed and Nityananda still did not rise. Finally, when the devotees began chanting the glories of Gauranga, Nitai awoke.
"This is the place of Radha Kunda!" he exclaimed.
"Here in the afternoon, Gauranga would do kirtan with His associates. Look at the brilliance of Shyama Kunda, attracting all the minds of the people of the universe, and look at the groves of the sakhis here and there. Here in the afternoon, Gauranga--immersed in singing Krishna's glories--would satisfy all by giving prema. Know that such a place as this, where the devotees worship the Lord, can be found nowhere in the universe. Whoever lives here will get love of God. This will soothe the burning fire of material life."
In this place the devotees stayed, calling the name of Gauranga, drowned in love of God. There in Ritudvipa they spent the night. The next day, Nityananda Prabhu--dancing all the while--came to Vidya Nagar, a splendid place attractive to munis. This gladdened the devotees.
Bhaktivinoda, worthless and unqualified, whose only wealth is the lotus feet of Nitai and Jahnava, sings the glories of Nadiya. He holds the devotees' feet and begs from them the treasure of Krishna bhakti.
Glory to Gaura, Nitai, Advaita and Gadadhara.
Glory to Srivasa, to Navadvipa, an ocean of kirtana.
Coming to Vidya Nagar, Sri Nityananda Raya explained to Jiva Goswami its significance.
At the time of the pralaya, Navadvipa, the eternal Dhama, remains situated in the pure form of an eight-petalled lotus. All the avataras and all the fortunate living entities stay somewhere in that lotus at that time. Matsya Avatara carried the Vedas to Vidya Nagar of Ritudvipa. Since all knowledge is contained in the Vedas which came to this place, it is called Vidya Nagar.
Then, when Brahma--with the intention of starting creation again--glanced fearfully upon the devastated earth, the Lord showed mercy to him here. Brahma began praising the Lord. When Brahma opened his mouth, Sarasvati was born from his tongue. With her assistance, Brahma happily praised the Lord. At the time of the creation, Maya crosses over the Viraja and spreads out her three gunas everywhere. The great rishis with great effort revealed knowledge within this universe. Taking shelter of this abode of Sarasvati, the rishis conquered over ignorance. After having received lessons on the sixty-four branches of knowledge, the rishis set themselves up at various places throughout the world. But all the respective branches of knowledge of the respective rishis are situated eternally at this holy spot.
Valmike came here and by the mercy of Narada received the Ramayana, Dhanvantari received the Ayurveda here, and Visvamitra and others received the teachings of the Dhanurveda. Here Saunaka and the rishis read the mantras of the Vedas and Shiva discussed tantra. At the request of the rishis, Brahma here produced the four Vedas. Living here, Kapila created sankhya philosophy and Gautama brought forth logic and the process of argument. Kanubhuk produced the vaisesika philosophy here and Patanjali the Yoga Sutra. Jaimini wrote the Mimamsa Sastra here and Vedavyasa wrote the Puranas. The five rishis headed by Narada wrote the Pancharatra here to teach the people about practical devotional service.
In this forest the Upanishads have all been worshipping Gauranga for a long time. Invisible to their eyes, Gauranga said, "Your philosophy of no form (nirakara) has spoiled you all. In the form of sruti you do not recognize Me, but when I shall appear in the form of My devotee on earth, you will see My lila with your own eyes. At that time you will sing loudly at the top of your voice My glories, the glories of God with qualities and form."
The shrutis became dumbfounded on hearing this. Secretly they stayed here waiting for the time. Blessed is this Kali-yuga, the topmost of yugas, for at this time appeared the Gauranga avatara!
Hearing that Gauranga would perform His educational pastimes here, Brhaspati came in the form of Vasudeva Sarvabhauma and took great care to please the Lord. Knowing that the Lord would perform pastimes of education in Navadvipa, he became indifferent to the abode of Indra. With his associates he rejected that place and happily took birth on earth.
At Vidya Nagar Sarvabhauma made his school and taught knowledge. But thinking that he would drown Gauranga in all his dry knowledge and thereby cheat him, he performed one lila. Before Gauranga was born, Sarvabhauma left Nadiya, leaving his students behind. He thought, "If I am the servant of Gauranga, He will certainly be merciful to me and come to me." Thus Sarvabhauma went to Puri and became powerful in knowledge of Mayavadi philosophy. In the disguise of a logician, the Lord fooled everyone. He would come to Vidya Nagar as a young student and defeat all the pupils of Sarvabhauma, who, defeated, would flee. Whoever hears the educational pastimes of the Lord in Vidya Nagar will become freed from ignorance.
Jiva Goswami, filled with bliss at that place, became choked up with prema. Then he asked Nityananda Prabhu, "Please cut down this one doubt. If sankhya and logic are inauspicious, why do they have a place in the eternal Dhama?"
Nityananda embraced Jiva and said affectionately, "There is nothing inauspicious in the Lord's Dhama. Logic and analysis are not independent or powerful here. They simply depend on bhakti. They are the servants of bhakti. However, by fault or bad activities, the wicked men turn everything backwards and upside down. Bhakti, devotion, is the Goddess here, and all others are servants. They only serve to reveal bhakti. The residence of nine-fold bhakti is in Navadvipa. Here karma and jnana serve bhakti. Materialists take scripture and twist it with their evil minds, but the pure devotees take this same scripture and find its teachings of Krishna bhakti.
"Praudha Maya is the servant of Gauranga and the presiding Deity here. She stays here through all yugas and serves Gauranga. She blinds that person who by his sinful activities has come to envy Vaisnavas and gives him all types of sorrow and sufferings by taking on the form of Mahamaya. But here, in the form of actual truth, Praudha Maya dissolves all sin and karma. Even if there is some offense in a Vaisnava, she removes that and releases him from all the troubles of karma. On the other hand, those who envy the Vaisnavas, the evil men, may study to gain knowledge at Nadiya but never do they receive the treasure of prema at Krishna's feet. They just receive ignorance, lack of knowledge, the shadow of real knowledge. Never do they see the opulences of Nadiya and Gauranga.
"So real knowledge is not inauspicious, but its shadow, ignorance, is. Jiva Goswami, by the mercy of Gauranga, you will reveal all this. By the desire of the Lord, you will write scriptures. By scripture you will be revealed. Now let us go to Jahnu's residence."
Having come to the hermitage of Jahnu Muni, Nityananda Prabhu explained, "This is called Jahnudvipa. This enchanting place is also called Bhadravana. At this place Jahnu Muni underwent penance and received the visit of Gauranga. Here Jahnu Muni was sitting saying his gayatri, when along came the Ganga gushind down in torrents, flooding everywhere. He opened his mouth and drank up all the water in one gulp. King Bhagiratha thouht, 'Where has the Ganga gone?' He concluded that Jahnu Muni had drunk the Ganga. In great anxiety the king worshipped the muni for several days. The muni then spread his legs and the Ganga came forth. Because of this incident the Ganga is called Jahnavi, daughter of Jahnu Muni, by the common people.
"Some time later, the son of the Ganga, Bhisma, came here to see Jahnu. Jahnu was very pleased with Bhisma and kept him here many days. At this place Bhisma learned the highest knowledge, which he in turn taught to Yudhisthira at Kuruksetra. By living in Navadvip, Bhisma attained devotional service and is therefore considered among the great Vaisnavas. Therefore this dvipa is the greatest deliverer. Whoever lives here is very fortunate."
That day Nityananda stayed at a devotee's house with His associates, and early the next morning, taking the devotees, he went to Modadrumadvipa.
Bhaktivinoda Thakur, whose only pride is the lotus feet of Jahnava and Nitai, sings the glories of Navadvipa.
All glories to the soul of the Panca Tattva, Gauranga!
All glories to Navadvipa Dhama, topmost abode!
Arriving at Mam Gachi village, Nityananda explained to Jiva Goswami: "Here in Modadrumadvipa is Ayodhya. In a previous kalpa, when Rama was banished to the forest, with Lakshmana and Sita He came to this place. He built a hut under a huge banyan tree and for some time lived here happily. Seeing the effulgence of Navadvipa, the son of Raghu began laughing to Himself.
"How attractive was that form, green as new grass, lotus- eyed, with graceful bow in hand! Wearing the dress of a brahmacari, on His head piled matted locks, He attracted all living entities. Seeing the laughing of Rama, the daughter of Janaka, Sita, asked Him the reason.
"'Listen, Sita, here is one very secret story. When Kali-yuga comes to Nadiya, I will be seen in yellow complexion.' Upon saying that, He immediately wanted to take birth in the womb of Sachi in Jagannatha Misra's house.
"'I will give to alll those fortunate souls who see My childhood pastimes the supreme gift of prema. For My dear devotees I will perform educational pastimes and then reveal the glories of the Holy Name. Taking sannyasa, I will then go to Puri, and My own mother will weep, with My wife in her arms.'
"Hearing this, Sita asked, 'Oh lotus-eyed one, why will You make Your mother cry? Why will you give up Your wife and take sannyasa? What happiness is there in giving sorrow to Your wife?'
"Sri Rama said, 'Oh dear one, you know everything. But you have become ignorant just to teach the living entities. Prema bhakti in relation to Me that the devotees relish comes in two ways. Just listen. In union with Me they enjoy what is called sambhoga, and in separation from Me they experience the happiness of vipralambha. My eternal associates desire sambhoga, but in mercy I give them vipralambha. The sorrow in vipralambha that centers around Me is actually the topmost bliss. This is how the devotees understand this. After separation, when union occurs, so much greater than before, a hundred thousand times multiplied, is the bliss they feel. That is the explanation of how there can be happiness in separation. You should accept it, for this is the word of the four Vedas.
"'Who is now Mother Kausalya will become Sachi in Gauranga lila, and you, Sita, will serve Me as Vishnupriya. In separation you will worship My murti and spread My glory. Separated from you, I will worship a golden Sita murti in Ayodhya village. But this topic is very confidential, Sita. Do not reveal this to the people now.
"'This Navadvipa is My dear place, and even Ayodhya is not equal to it. When Kali-yuga comes, this huge banyan tree will disappear from vision but will stay in unmanifested form.'
"Thus did Rama pass His time here with Lakshmana and Sita. Later He went to Danda Karanya to complete His activities. Observe here the place where His hut stood. Rama's friend, Guhaka, at the desire of the Lord, took birth here in a brahmana's family. His name was Sadananda Vipra Bhattacharya. He knew nothing in the three worlds except Rama. He was present in Jagannatha Misra's house when Gauranga was born. At that time all the devas came to see the child. By this Sadananda knew that his Lord had taken birth. In great delight he went to His house. In meditation on Rama, he saw Gaurasundara.
"Gauranga was seated on a throne, surrounded by devas waving camaras. Then he saw Ramachandra, green as grass, and beside Him Lakshmana, the abode of Ananta. On the left was Sita, and facing Him was Hanuman. Seeing this, the vipra made his way to Mayapur, and unseen by anyone, feasted his eyes on the form of Gauranga.
"'Blessed am I, blessed indeed! Ramachandra is present before me as Gaurachandra!'
"Later, when the sankirtan movement started, Sadananda took part. Oh, Jiva, here the devotees see the Bhandire forest."
Hearing the topics and seeing the places in the eternal Dhama, the devotees surrounded Nityananda and danced. Jiva's body took on the symptoms of ecstasy, while he shouted the name of Gauranga.
That day Nityananda stayed in the house of Narayani. Narayani, who was the mother of Vrindavana Das Thakur (Vedavyas), pure and chaste, did service to the Vaisnavas. The next day, early in the morning, after walking some distance, they entered Vaikuntha Pura.
To carry out the order of Jahnava and Nitai, the worthless wretch sings the glories of Nadiya.
Glory to Gauranga and the Panca Tattva!
Glory to Navadvipa, the abode of Sri Chaitanya!
Coming to Vaikuntha Pur, Nityananda Prabhu spoke to Jiva while laughing softly.
"At one side of the eight-petalled Navadvipa is this Vaikuntha Pur. Listen now. This Vaikuntha Pur, situated in the spiritual sky, is the abode of Narayana. It is found to exist beyond the river called Viraja, beyond the influence of maya. Sri, Bhu and Lila energies serve the Lord here. The effulgence radiating from this place, a land of pure consciousness, is called the brahman. However, with material eyes, the common people see only the material world. Narada saw this spiritual abode with his own eyes. He saw Narayan become Gaurasundara.
"There is one more confidential story. A great acharya came to Puri and pleased the Lord with his verses. Jagannatha appeared before him and said, 'Go and see Navadvipa Dhama, for soon I shall appear there in the house of Jagannatha Misra. Navadvipa is My very dear Dhama, situated in one place in the spiritual sky. As My eternal servant and a leading devotee, you should see Navadvipa. Let your students, who are absorbed in dasya rasa, stay here, and You go alone. Any living being who does not see Navadvipa has been born uselessly. Just one portion of Navadvipa contains Ranga, Venkata and Yadava Acala. Therefore go to Navadvip and see the form of Gauranga. You have come to the earth to preach bhakti, so let that birth be successful with the mercy of Gaura. From Navadvipa, go to Kurma Sthana, and there join again with your disciples.'
"Joining his hands, Ramanuja made a request to Jagannatha.
"'You have mercifully mentioned Gauranga, but exactly Who He is I do not know.'
"The Lord answered, 'Everyone knows the master of Goloka, Krishna. That Sri Krishna, Whose vilasa murti is Narayana, is the supreme truth, residing in Vrndavana. That Krishna is fully manifested in the form of Gauranga, and Navadvipa Dham is the same as Vrndavana. This Navadvip is the topmost abode, situated beyond the material universe, and in that place Gauranga stays eternally. By My mercy that Dhama has come to exist within Bhu Mandala, yet remaining unaffected by maya. This is the verdict of scripture. And if you think that Navadvipa is only a material location, then your devotion will perish. By My will, My inconceivable energy preserves this full transcendental Dhama within the material world. Simply by reading scriptures, one will not get the highest truth, for the highest truth surpasses all reasoning power. Only the devotees, by My mercy, can understand.'
"Hearing this, Ramanuja was moved with prema.
"'Lord, Your lila is truly astounding. The scriptures cannot know Your opulences. Why is not Gauranga lila described clearly in the scriptures? When I closely examine the shruti and puranas, I find some hint of the Gauranga Tattva only. Now, however, I am ready to serve Your order, for all doubts are gone. If it is Your desire, I will go to Navadvipa and preach Gaura lila throughout the three worlds, giving evidence from the hidden scriptures to all the people, converting all to devotional service to Gauranga. Please instruct me.'
"Jagannatha said, 'Ramanuja, do not broadcast like this. Keep the esoteric Gaura lila secret. Only after He has finished His lila will the general public receive it. Preach for Me on the level of dasya rasa, while in your heart worship Gauranga constantly.'
"Taking the advice of the Lord, Ramanuja secretly cultured his attraction for Navadvipa. Narayana, being merciful, led Ramanuja to Vaikuntha Pur, and there showed him His transcendental form served by Sri, Bhu, and Lila. Ramanuja thought himself fortunate to obtain this darsana, but instantly the figure changed to that of Gaura Sundara, the son of Jagannatha Misra. Ramanuja swooned at the brilliance of the form. Gauranga put His lotus feet on His head. Ramanuja, divinely inspired, recited prayers of praise.
"'I must see Gaura's actual lila on earth. I can never leave Navadvip!'
"Gauranga said, 'Your wish will be fulfilled, son of Kesava. When the Nadiya lila will be revealed in the future, you will take birth here again.'
"Gauranga disappeared. Ramanuja, contented, resumed his journey. After some days he arrived at Kurma Sthana and with his disciples saw the place. During his life he preached dasya rasa throughout the south of India, while internally he was absorbed in Gaura lila. By Gauranga's mercy, he was later born in Navadvipa as the devotee Ananta."
The party came to Vallabh Acharya's house and saw the radiance of Lakshmi Gaurange deities there.
"See the house of Ananta, where many Narayana bhaktas gathered. It is well known that the kings of that time established Narayana worship here."
Then the devotees saw Nihareyasa forest in great bliss. This lies on the bank of the Viraja River. While reciting many stories, they arrived at Mahat Pur. Nityananda explained:
"Here there is a nice forest called Kamyavana, as in Vraja. Look upon it with devotion. There used to be five banyan trees here in ancient times, but these have now disappeared. The place is now called Mata Pur, but according to scripture the name is Mahat Pur. When the five Pandavas and Draupadi during exile came incognito to Bengal, Yudhisthira had a dream at Ekacakra. The glories of Navadvip were revealed to him and he became anxious to see the place. Happily they all came here. Seeing the splendor of Nadiya, they praised the great fortune of the residents. Living here for some time, they killed many demons. See, there is Yudhisthira Tila (hillock), and there is Draupadi's kunda. Aware of the glory of the place, Yudhisthira stayed for some time. One day he had a dream of Gauranga, Who shone radiant in all directions and Whose form was extraordinary. Smiling, Gauranga spoke, 'See My rare form. At your house I am Krishna, the son of Nanda, and I always stay with you as a friend. This Navadvipa will be revealed in Kali-yuga, driving out all darkness. As you have all been My servants for a long time, when My lila takes place, you willl again take birth. On the bank of the Sindhu in Orissa, I will stay with you. Please go now to Orissa, purify the place and eliminate the suffering of the living entities.'
"Yudhisthira explained this dream to his brothers. After deliberation, they all went off to Orissa. It was painful to leave Navadvipa, but the order of the Lord had to be obeyed.
"Here also Madhva and his disciples stayed for some time. Gaurasundara appeared to him in a dream.
"'Everyone knows that you are My eternal servant. Appearing in Navadvipa, I will accept your sampradaya. Go everywhere and carefully uproot all the false scriptures of the Mayavadis and reveal the glories of worshipping the murti of the Lord. I will broadcast your pure teachings later on.'
"Gauranga disappeared. Madhva, awaking, was dumbfounded. 'Will I ever see that beautiful golden form again?' he cried.
"In reply there came a voice from the sky. 'Worship Me secretly, and you will come to Me.'
"With this instruction, Madhva went on with great resolution to defeat all the Mayavadi philosophers."
While relating these stories, the party arrived at Rudradvipa and looked around. "Rudradvipa has been cut in two pieces by the Ganga. See how this western island has now moved to the east bank. No one lives on this side now. From here see Sankarapur. Even from a distance, how it beautifies the bank of the Ganga. When Sankara Acharya went out to defeat all opponents, on his way to Navadvipa, he first arrived here. At heart, he was a Vaisnava, but exteriorly he played the role of a Mayavadi, a servant of maya. Actually he was an empowered portion of Shiva and was expert at preaching a covered form of Buddhism. This was by the Lord's desire. When he came here, Gaurasundara showed to Sankara Acharya His divine form and then spoke:
"'You are My servant. Following My orders, you are preaching effectively the Mayavadi doctrine. But as this Navadvipa Dhama is very dear to Me, the Mayavadi philosophy has no place here. On My behalf, Vriddha Shiva and Praudha Maya spread the imaginary impersonal interpretations of scriptures, but only to those people who envy the devotees of the Lord. In this way I cheat them. Since this Navadvipa Dhama is generally a place for My devotees, not for the envious, such doctrines should not be preached here. Therefore you should go elsewhere to perform your particular service. Do not contaminate the inhabitants of Navadvipa.'
"Relishing the truth about Navadvipa, and with devotion instilled in his heart, he went elsewhere.
"In this Rudradvipa live the eleven Rudras, who chant Gauranga's glories. Here Shiva and his followers constantly dance in bliss. Seeing this, the devas shower flowers from the sky. At one time Vishnuswami came here during the course of his tour to defeat opposing philosophies. With his followers he stayed the night in Rudradvipa. The disciples began dancing and singing. Vishnu Swami recited verses from sruti and smrti. Pleased by the discussion of bhakti, Shiva showed himself. Upon his arrival in the assembly, Vishnu Swami became startled. He folded his hands in prayer and recited appropriate praises. Shiva spoke to him.
"'All of you Vaisnavas are dear to me. Your discussion of devotion has pleased me. Ask a boon, and I shall grant it. There is nothing I will not give to the Vaisnavas.'
"Paying his dandavats, Vishnusawmi, filled with spiritual love, said, 'Give to us this one gift: that henceforth we shall perfect a sampradaya teaching devotional service.'
"In great bliss, Rudra consented and named the sampradaya after himself. Thus Vishnuswami's sampradaya is called the Rudra Sampradaya. With the mercy of Rudra, Vishnu Swami stayed here, and desiring love of God, took to the worship of Gauracandra.
"Gauranga appeared in a dream. 'By Rudra's mercy you have become My bhakta. Being very fortunate, you came to Navadvipa and attained the treasure of bhakti. Now go out and preach the philosophy of suddha advaita. The time of My appearance on earth will come soon. At that time you will appear in the form of Sri Vallabha Bhatta. You will meet Me in Puri, and then going to Vrndavana, you will perfect your sampradaya.'"
Nityananda Prabhu continued, "Jiva Goswami! Sri Vallabha is now in Gokula. If you go there, you will be able to see him."
Saying this, Nityananda headed south and came to Para Danga on the bank of the Ganga. Here He showed the place where the Rasa Mandal and Dhira Samira of Vraja were located.
"Oh Jiva, this is Vrndavana. One can see the Vrindavana pastimes here."
Upon hearing the word "Vrindavana," Jiva began trembling and tears flowed from his eyes.
"Gauranga and His devotees performed kirtan describing the Rasa Lila at this place. The place of the Rasa Lila in Vrindavana is situated here in Navadvipa. On the bank of the Ganga, the fortunate man can see that our Lord resides here eternally with the gopis. West of here, see Sri Dhira Samira. In Vrndavana, it lies on the bank of the Yamuna, but here it lies on the bank of the Ganga. Actually what you see is not the bank of the Ganga but that of the Yamuna, since in the western part of the Ganga flows the Yamuna. All the lila places of Vrindavana are situated within this place. Make no distinction between Vrindavana and Navadvipa, nor between Gauranga and Krishna."
In this way, Nityananda Raya went around, showing Vrndavana to Jiva Goswami. Then heading some distance to the north, they spent the night in Rudradvipa.
Bhaktivinoda, whose wealth is the lotus feet of Nitai and Jahnava, sings this glorification of Nadiya.
All glories to the wanderer of Nadiya's groves, Sri Gaurachandra!
All glories to the master of Ekachakra, Sri Nityananda!
All glories to the master of Santipur, Advaita Isvara!
All glories to Gadadhara of Ramacanda Pur!
All glories to Gaura Bhumi, the essence of chintamani, where Krishna wandered in Kali-yuga!
The son of Padma, Sri Nityananda, crossing the Ganga, then going some distance, called out to the devotees:
"See the attractive place called Bilvapaksha, commonly called Belapukhariya. In scripture, what is called Bilvavana is situated here in Navadvipa. At one time some brahmanas, devotees of Shiva, worshipped him by offering the leaves of his favorite tree, the vilva of bela tree, for a fortnight's duration. Shiva was pleased with the brahmanas and gave them Krishna bhakti. Among those worshippers was Nimbaditya, who had been very attentive in the worship. Shiva spoke to him:
"'At the edge of this village is a sacred vilva forest. There the four Kumaras are in meditation. By their mercy you will receive transcendental knowledge. They are your gurus. Doing service to them, you will receive all that is of value.'
"Shiva disappeared. Nimbaditya, after searching, found the place. On an attractive platform in the forest he sighted the four brothers, Sanaka, Sananda, Sanatana and Sanat Kumar, sitting there in Shiva's abode, unseen to all others. They were young, naked, and noble in character. Nimbarka cried out in excitement, 'Hare Krishna!'
"At that sound, the Kumaras' meditation broke, they opened their eyes and saw before them the figure of an ideal Vaisnava. Satisfied by this sight, one after another they embraced the brahmana.
"'Who are you? Why have you come here? We will certainly fulfill all your prayers.'
"Nimbarka paid his dandavats and introduced himself with humility. Sanat Kumar spoke with a smile:
"'The Supreme Lord, all-merciful, knowing that Kali-yuga will be very troublesome, made the decision to preach bhakti. Empowering four men with devotion, He has sent them into the world to preach. Ramanuja, Madhva, and Vishnu Swami are three of these men. You are the fourth of these great devotees. Sri Lakshmi accepted Ramanuja, Brahma accepted Madhva, Rudra accepted Vishnu Swami, and we, meeting you today, have the good fortune to teach you. This is our intention. Previously we were engaged in meditating on the brahman effulgence, but by mercy that sinful act has gone away. Knowing that it is most essential to present pure bhakti, I have written one samhita, called the Sanat Kumar Samhita. You should receive initiation and follow its teachings."
Seeing there the mercy of guru, the wise Nimbarka quickly took his bath in the Ganga and returned. Paying dandavats, he said humbly, 'Oh deliverer of the fallen, please deliver this low rascal.'
"The four brothers gave him the Radha Krishna mantra and instructed him how to worship Radha and Krishna filled with sentiments of great love, called Bhava marga. At that place, with the mantra, he performed worship according to that samhita. Radha and Krishna showed Themselves to him. Lighting up all directions, They spoke gently:
"'You are very fortunate. You have done sadhana in Navadvipa, which is dear to us. Here We take on one form, as the son of Sachi.'
"At that moment the two became the one form of Gauranga. Nimbarka was trembling.
"'Never have I seen or heard of such a remarkable form anywhere!'
"Mahaprabhu said, 'Please keep this form secret now. Just preach Krishna bhakti and the pastimes of Radha and Krishna, for I am very happy in these pastimes. When the form of Gauranga will appear, He will enjoy His educational pastimes. Just at that time you will take birth in Kashmir, and as a pandit out to defeat all opponents, you will tour India. You will be celebrated everywhere for your great learning and will be called Kesava Kashmiri. While wandering in Navadvipa, you will come to Mayapur. The great learned men of Navadvipa, when they hear your name will flee. Intoxicated with scholastic studies, I will then take pleasure in defeating you. However, by the mercy of Sarasvati, you will realize My identity, give up your own pride, and take shelter of Me. At that time I will give you the gift of bhakti and will send you out to preach devotional service again. Thus you can satisfy Me by preaching the philosophy of Dvaita Advaita, keeping My identity secret.
"'Later, when I begin the sankirtan movement, I Myself will preach, using the essence of the philosophies of the four of you. From Madhva I will receive two items: his complete defeat of the Mayavadi philosophy and his service to the murti of Krishna, accepting it as an eternal spiritual being. From Ramanuja I will accept two teachings: the concept of bhakti unpolluted by karma and jnana, and service to the devotees. From Vishnu Swami's teachings I will accept two elements: the sentiment of exclusive dependence on Krishna and the path of raga bhakti. And from you I will receive two great principles: the necessity of taking shelter of Radha and the high esteem for the gopis' love of Krishna.'
"When Gauracandra disappeared, Nimbarka wept out of love. After worshipping the feet of his gurus, he departed elsewhere and started preaching Krishna bhakti."
Nityananda Prabhu showed Jiva Goswami Rama Tirtha from far off, where Balarama killed Kolasura and then, with the Yadus, took bath in the Ganga. It is now known as Bukmapur. This point is one edge of the parikrama route, which is particularly glorious in Kartika month.
Nityananda Prabhu and the devotees left Bilvapaksha and made their way to Bharadvaj Tila village. Nityananda explained, 'At this place the muni Bharadvaja came to see the Ganga Sagara. Here he worshipped Gauracandra, Who then appeared to him.
"'Your desire will be fulfilled. When I make My appearance, you will see Me.'
"The Lord disappeared and the muni fainted. After staying here some days, the muni departed to see other tirthas. The common people call this place Bharai Danga. The scriptures consider this a major tirtha."
While speaking thus, they returned to Mayapur. Isan Thakur welcomed them back. Nityananda Prabhu, in unprecedented prema, danced and sang among the devotees. That day, in the house of Jagannatha Misra, which is the best of all holy places, where Gauranga and the Holy Name appeared, the Lord's own mother fed the Vaisnavas. How to describe the bliss at that place!? The sound of the kirtan resounded loudly.
Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur, whose hope is the shade of the feet of Nitai and Jahnava, sings these pastimes of Navadvipa.
Glory to Gauranga and Nityananda!
Glory to Advaita and Gadadhara, incarnate bliss who is relishing prema!
Glory to Srivas and the devotees, to Navadvip Dham!
Glory to nama kirtana, the residence of prema!
Nityananda Prabhu was sitting in the yard of Srivas, with tears streaming from His eyes from love of Gauranga. From all directions the saintly Vaisnavas came, overcome by that inundation of love. Jiva Goswami became mad as he began experiencing the love of Radha and Krishna. Paying dandavats to Nityananda's lotus feet at that place, his throat was choked up in ecstasy.
Very carefully, Nityananda Prabhu posed this question to him: "After a few days you will go to Vrindavana?"
Jiva answered, "The order of the Lord is supreme. Accepting that order, I cannot but go to Vrindavana. But I have a few things to ask. For the benefit of Your servant, please answer, oh Lord. You say that Navadvip and Vrindavana are non-different. If that is so, why should one make the effort to go to Vrindavana at all?"
Nityananda Prabhu answered, "This is a deep topic, so hear carefully. But as long as the Lord's visible pastimes are present on earth, see that the materialists do not know of this. Navadvipa and Vrindavana are one principle, neither one less or greater than the other. Vrindavana is the receptacle of rasa, the goal of the living entities, but one who is not qualified cannot receive that nectar. Therefore, by mercy, that same Dhama has become Navadvipa, where the living entities can attain qualification for that nectar. In other words, Radha and Krishna pastimes are the highest of all pleasure for the living entities, but immediately one has no right to it. Only after many lives of austerity does one reach the stage of knowledge. When knowledge matures, one inquires after this rasa. But as there are many obstacles at all times, to obtain the great treasure of this nectar is very rare indeed. Therefore, anyone and everyone who goes to Vrindavana does not get that rasa. Rather, because of offenses, that sweet nectar turns sour.
"Furthermore, because during terrible Kali-yuga offenses are continuous, because the body is short-lived, and because the troubles are many, even if one wants the Vrindavana rasa, it is not attainable. Therefore, the only method of getting that rasa is to get the mercy of Krishna. Radha and Krishna have given that mercy by appearing along with Vrindavana in the single form of Gaura Hari in Navadvipa. In that form He has given the process for qualifying for that rasa. Even the initial presence of many offenses does not bar one from quickly attaining the goal of prema by taking to the worship of Gauranga.
"Therefore, if one takes residence in Navadvipa and takes shelter of the name, the offenses will cease and the qualification for the rasa will come. Quickly love of Krishna will shine, and topics of Radha and Krishna will prevail. In this way the living entity, by earning the mercy of Gauranga, obtains entrance into the holy land of Vrindavana, land of the nectarean pastimes of Radha and Krishna.
"As this is a confidential topic, do not discuss it openly. Actually there is absolutely no difference between Navadvipa and Vrindavana. As you have the qualification to take shelter of the place where the Radha-Krishna rasa is fully manifested, you should now take shelter of Vrindavana. In the strict sense, there is no need to go to Vraja Dhama, for upon qualification that Vraja Dhama appears right here in Navadvipa Dhama. Only for other purposes should you now go to Vraja. It is always necessary for the living entities to take shelter of Navadvipa in order to obtain qualification for the rasa of Vraja. Only when one attains that appreciation of the Vraja rasa should one go and live in Vrindavana, where one develops his full happiness of the rasas. When you get the mercy of Navadvipa, easily you attain Vrindavana."
Hearing the conclusions of the Lord, Jiva Goswami, in ecstatic bliss, caught the lotus feet of Sri Nityananda.
"I have one more question, so please listen. Many people live in Navadvipa, but why do they still not get Krishna bhakti? If they are staying in this Dhama, place of purification, how is it that offenses remain in them? This has been disturbing me. How will you resolve this doubt, my Lord, Who are the abode of the universe, the eternal Supreme Personality of Godhead?"
Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur, whose hope is the shade of the lotus feet of Nitai and Jahnava, speakes thus, low and worthless though he be.
All glories to Sri Gauranga, son of Saci!
All glories to the son of Padmavati, life of Jahnava!
All glories to the husband of Sita, and to Gadadhara!
All glories to Srivas and all the devotees.
In answer to Sri Jiva's question, Nityananda Prabhu spoke profundly to the assembled devotees, "Listen, oh Jiva. Both Vrindavana and Navadvipa are the shelter of countless blissful devotees. Purified living entities, having crossed over material nature, live there as associates of Krishna. That Dhama is eternal, non-material, and fully conscious, completely opposite to the material world. You should know that the houses, doors, the rivers and streams, the forests and courtyards, are all completely spiritual and intensely attractive. That is a blissful place, transcendental to material nature, resting on Krishna's inconceivable and supremely magnanimous sandhini energy.
"By that energy, that Dhama has descended here in Nadiya, for the greatest desire of Krishna is the deliverance of the living entities. Since no material thing or person is ever situated in the Dhama, a film of dull matter has been spread over this Dhama to keep it covered from the materialist. The people who have no relationship with Krishna Chaitanya simply live on top of that covering, blind to the real truth. Though one is thinking, 'I am in Navadvip,' Praudha Maya happily keeps the Dhama far away from that person. But if by some great fortune one receives association of a devotee, that relationship (sambandha) with Sri Chaitanya will come to him.
"This topic of relationship is a deep thing, oh son of Vallabha, a treasure that the bound living entity cannot understand easily. Even if one calls out the name of Chaitanya with seeming affection, if that relationship is not there, one simply remains in the material realm. Such a person resides on top of that illusory covering of the Dhama and never attains pure bhakti. This person is the pretender, the deceitful, who has no humility and is full of pride, who thinks himself fully qualified. But by the great mercy of the devotees, even such a person can give up his pride and perform devotional activities. One should think himself lower than a blade of grass, be more tolerant than a tree, not ask for respect for himself, and considerately respect all others. When one is endowed with these four qualities and sings the glories of the Lord, Sri Chaitanya comes into that person's heart and establishes the relationship.
"Now, with Krishna there are five relationships: santa, dasya, sakhya, vatsalya and madhurya. By first doing service in santa and dasya attitudes to Gauranga, the devotee attains worship of Krishna in the other rasas. That perfected position attained through one's particular relationship with the Lord becomes the predominating mood in his worship.
"Whoever makes a distinction between Gauranga and Krishna is worthless and vile, and he will never attain a relationship with Krishna. But, on the other hand, whoever possesses the qualities beginning with humility and takes the association of devotees, will first worship Gauranga in dasya or servitude relationship. This dasya worship of Gauranga gradually becomes perfected. It is in that mood that the devotees call Sri Chaitanya 'Mahaprabhu.' After this, if one develops to the standard of love of God in the Vrindavana mood, the form of Gaura in one's worship becomes that of Radha and Krishna. Radha and Krishna, becoming one, have descended in the form of Gauranga Raya, and therefore the full pastimes of the divine couple are present in that form. Thus, after the dasya relation reaches maturity in the heart of the living entity and the Vrindavana rasa naturally develops in his heart, the form of Gaura Hari of Navadvipa becomes Radha and Krishna in Vrndavana, and the nectar of Their eternal lila inundates the devotee. This is how the devotee reaches Radha and Krishna in Vrndavana.
"The materialist, blind to spiritual life, cannot see the deep relation between Navadvipa and Vraja, which are one and the same but are simultaneously distinct entities. This very relationship has its roots in the deep relationship of Gaura and Krishna, Who are also one and simultaneously distinct. When one acquires a taste for that madhurya rasa, then the form of Gaura Hari becomes that of Radha and Krishna. Very soon Rupa and Sanatana will teach you all these truths, of son of Vallabha. Now the Lord Himself has given to you the right to enter into Vrndavana. Jiva Goswami, do not delay any longer in going there."
Saying this, the all-merciful Nityananda Prabhu put His feet upon Jiva's head and instigated within him spiritual power. At that instant Jiva Goswami swooned, experiencing great ecstatic love of God, and remained unconscious for some time at Nityananda Prabhu's feet. There in Srivasa's yard the ecstatic symptoms of love manifested themselves on his body. Crying, he spoke: "How unfortunate I am that I did not see with my own eyes the Lord's pastimes in Navadvipa. Gaura Hari performed His pastimes to free the souls bound in the material world, but as I did not see those activities, my days simply pass uselessly."
Hearing that Sri Jiva would be going to Vrndavana, many devotees came to Srivasa's yard. The elders among them gave their blessings, and the younger begged his mercy. Folding his hands, Sri Jiva then spoke, "Please excuse all of my offenses. You are all the servants of Sri Chaitanya and the gurus of the world. Oh desire trees, give mercy to this insignificant living entity. Let the attraction of my mind reside in Lord Chaitanya, let Nityananda Prabhu be my goal birth after birth! Ignorant, a mere child, I have given up my home, but you are my friends, taking care of my life. Without the mercy of Vaisnavas, one
cannot attain Krishna. Therefore, brothers, give me the dust from your feet."
Having said this, praising and bowing down to all, with the consent of Nityananda Prabhu he went to the house of Jagannatha Misra. At the feet of Saci, his mind agitated by spiritual emotions, he received the order to go to Vrndavana. Giving to him the dust from her lotusfeet and all blessings, she bid him well on his journey.
Weeping and weeping, Jiva crossed the Ganga. Crying the name of Gauranga, he went out, knowing the order was supreme. Then, reaching the edge of Navadvipa, he crossed the boundary. Leaving the Dhama, he paid his dandavats and headed for Vrndavana. At that moment Vraja Dhama, the Yamuna, and his brothers, Rupa and Sanatana, awoke in his heart.
One night along the way he had a dream. Gauranga said, "Go to Mathura. You and your brothers, Rupa and Santana, who are all very dear to me, together manifest the scriptures of devotional service. Dedicate your life to my service, and see at all times my pastimes of Vraja."
Awaking from his dream, Jiva was in great bliss and rushed quickly to Vrndavana. The activity that Jiva Goswami accomplished there is impossible to describe. Later one fortunate man will describe all this, and the devotees hearing it will be in great bliss. The worthless, unfit Bhaktivinoda has made this description of travelling in the Dhama.
I make one request at the feet of the Vaisnavas. Let my relationship with Gaura be sealed. Along with that relationship, let me reside in Navadvip for a long time. That is my wish. I am a worm in the hole of materialism, extremely evil in conduct, devoid of devotion, filled with lust, and insane with anger. How else can such an evil person as I, the servant of maya, attain the relationship with Gauranga?
Oh Navadvipa Dhama, give me mercy and appear in my heart. Then I can escape. Oh Praudha Maya, protecting goddess, you are genuine mercy, you are the only hope to cross over the troubles arising from ignorance. Vrddha Siva, protector of the Dhama, be merciful, let the transcendental Dhama be revealed to my eyes. Oh inhabitants of the Dhama, all the devotees of Gauranga, put your feet upon my head, rascal that I am. Everyone, hear this prayer of mine, so that I will quickly attain the feet of Sri Chaitanya.
Though I am very low, taking the order of Sri Nityananda and Jahnava I have here described Navadvipa Dhama. It is a fact that this book is filled with the names of Gauranga, Nityananda and Navadvipa dham. On that basis, this work is a supreme deliverer, and I cannot be held guilty, though there by many faults in the writing. Devotees! In reading this work, take out the valuable fruit that will enhance your parikrama. If one reads such a work while doing parikrama, the fruits increase a hundred fold. That is the verdict of scripture.
Thus has Bhaktivinoda Thakur, vile, low and worthless, whose aspiration is the shade of the lotus feet of Sri Nitai and Jahnava, sung this glorification of Nadiya.
